Can't tell you if it's cool or not

Recently purchased Exile (Myst III) and Uru here at Amazon, after checking computer requirements. Exile is dull, despite the cheap price, don't bother. Uru, on the other hand, is massive, and although it will load, cannot get it to run on new Dell XP machine. No on-line support from UBI that I can find - their beautiful web site is geared for those who've already gotten 'in' and are ready to move forward to cyberspace. I'm very disappointed but willing to sell to the highest bidder!

that the graphic design and rendering on this is MUCH better than on MYST 3 EXILE-I nearly fell out of my seat laughing at the amatuer designs, and cartoonish look of that world.
To me RIVEN set a standard, and I was hoping that 5 years of computer advancement would have created a state-of-the-art looking game, not a stylized version of LEGEND OF ZELDA.

4-5 Star Prior Review Drops to 2 Stars (and here's why)

This is a revised review based on further game play and testing.

I upgraded my PIII from 550 to 1.4 GHZ CPU ($135), bought a 128MB GE Force FX5200 8X AGP (backward compatible to my 2X AGP slot but still the low-end card ~ $70), a Soundblaster Live Soundcard using analog interface ($30), and 384MB of RAM.

I'm in no hurry to play/finish the game. I can play (maybe) 1-2 hours a week. But with a few days off from work this past week, I've attempted to play it over a period of the last 14 hours or so. I don't buy many other games so I'm planning to savor this one (if it ever stops freezing my PC). The graphics are beautiful and the sound is awesome. I've got the game settings right so the game rarely crashes anymore on the opening desert level.

The real problems, unfortunately, start when I make my first link over to the level with the four linking books and the small building. Unfortunately, this level really locks up my Windows 2000 OS. Even with my PC "upgrade" I still have to "baby" the game and try and free up RAM using my FreeMem Pro application to try and "extend" the amount of time I can play before my PC locks up. The worst crashes lost my game character (twice) and I was forced to start the game from the beginning level (creating a new character and having to run back through every level I had been to). I've been very patient for the past 14 hours of game play but the crashes have finally reached the point of annoyance.

So - why did I give URU 2 stars? The question asks: "How much fun is this game?" The game is tremendous in sound and graphics and normally would get a 5-star rating from me. It is a visual and audio adventure that is amazing and enjoyable. I can't wait to explore more in the months to come. Even the "testing" I had to do to fine-tune the game (have it play at it's best without crashing the machine) was fun for awhile for a computer tech like me. But for that same reason, I had to lower the rating to 2 stars BECAUSE it has these technical issues that interrupt the game play quite regularly (now that I'm past the opening level). I hope UBI Soft releases a game patch soon to free up memory during game play and prevent the PC from locking up (seems to be a recurrent theme even with people who have Pentium 4 machines). The lockups are no fun and the lockups are the primary reason I feel URU deserves only a 2-star rating (until UBI Soft starts addressing and fixing these issues). I will wait to see what UBI Soft does in the future to try and salvage this game before passing final judgment. They've always released the right patches to allow me to play Riven and Exile in the past. I hope they prioritize the fixes needed for URU before they have a revolt in the ranks of Myst players who were hoping to enjoy this sequel but may give up trying because of the frequent system crashes it causes.

Mind-Blowing Natural Extension to the Myst Series

Although this has now been supplanted by Myst Online: Uru Live, this is an excellent experience. The Smithsonian should keep a copy of this in their art collection. Incredibly fun, and a mind-blowing extension to the Myst series. Although the boxed version of this game dates back to 2003, please make sure you have a fairly decent video card in order to fully experience the graphics, and make sure you download the correct drivers for that card (which may be older than the ones you're currently using on your machine).

I'm so glad I use a Macintosh and can wait until all the squabbles are over. (A guest from Lawrence, KS USA - The landscapes...looked like something out of a Dr. Seuss book) If this is true - I can't wait! I love Dr. Seuss 'they' ought to make a Myst game exactly like 'I Had Trouble Getting to Solla Sallew' and aim it at adults like me. I've been waiting all this time, and now my dream may have come true. But I couldn't be so lucky.

THIS IS A FANTASTIC GAME!!!!! YOU WILL LOVE IT IF YOU LOVE FANTASY. IT IS A CHALLENGE, BUT A LITTLE CHALLENGE IS A GOOD THING. IT IS SO COOL THAT YOU CAN MAKE YOUR CHARACTER EITHER MALE OR FEMALE, AND THAT YOU CANE MAKE IT LOOK EXACTLY LIKE YOURSELF!!!!! THE PUZZELS YOU HAVE TO SOLVE ARE REALLY INTRESTING. IT IS MUCH BETTER THAN RIVEN BECAUSE YOU CAN CANGE YOUR VEIW AND YOU CAN SEE YOURSELF. YOU CAN ALSO COSTOMISE YOUR WARDROBE, AND EVEN YOUR SHOES. ME AND MY DAD BOTH LOVE THIS GAME!!!!!!!!

Too much power to tedious (sp?)

To start with, I hope you have some money to make upgrades. I happened to be lucky enough to have built my own gaming PC with 512M of very fast memory, a very fast large hard drive, and an ATI ALL In Wonder card that runs a 52" plasma screen. Something I put together just to play games of these sorts. The game still crashes occationally if I have the graphic turn all the way up.
Speaking of graphics and sound... yah they are very nice. This could be the first game that take FULL advantage of surround sound. Some of the areas are rather boring and I have run into annoyences with the white background and the white cursor getting lost. The menuvering takes quite a bit to get used to and even after playing for hours it's sometimes quite a pain.
The puzzles so far (I'm not finished with the game) are boring. Most of which consist of jumping to this perfect spot or running here and then there with perfect timing not to mention there is no real save position, so if you miss the perfect jump you have to wait for what seems like hours to return to the starting point then link back to where you were which is another eternal wait... (in reality it's less than a minute on my machine, it just seems like forever) of course you do this several times since you'r not sure if you'r doing the right thing or not... unless you want to just play the thing with the cheats sitting right by your side so you don't waist an hour jumping down a hole just to find out you were supposed to jump down that hole but two pixels to the left.
I loved all the other Myst's. This one I will suffer through just to see if it gets better and I will revise a review if it does.... I certainly hope they don't expect ppl to pay for online gaming with these kinds of bothersome puzzles. I guess it's worth the ~$50 if you have a system that can run it.... it'd better not be a standard machine you bought in a store, it'd better be some custom thing you had built.

Greatly Disappointed Myst Series Fan

I've played all the Myst series games and never found any other games I liked as well, so I was eagerly anticipating URU. What a disappointment. As many people have stated, the controls are very difficult--to my mind they interfere with the exploration of the wonderful worlds, which is one of my favorite things about this series. I just don't get the sense of wonder that I got with previous games and sometimes the timed puzzles are such a pain that they really lessen the enjoyment of the game. Unlike the other games, I may not bother to finish this one. The game definitely did not live up to my expectations either in story line or graphics. Another gripe I have is that you probably won't be able to play the on-line portion particularly well unless you have broadband. Well, this game is not good enough to induce me to upgrade to broadband to play the on-line portion. A really mediocre effort from the people who produced the previous three great games.

Nice graphics, average gameplay

I was taken by the scenery and atmosphere that Uru provides, therefore making this game appealing initially. I was then frusterated by the difficult controls which create a difficult gameplay. The puzzles are not too bad, and are quite simliare to the style of the previous games. I was pleased as well as disapointed with this game. I give it 3 stars.
