I Knew I was going to love it ! ! !

It nice to see that not all games require violence to be a best seller. My computer is a little slower than they would like but it works fine!!! If you loved Myst and are looking for a game like it, look no further.

Don't bother

I've played all the other Myst games and loved them. This game however, gave me nothing but technical headaches. Reading the system requirements gave me heartburn and I have a degree in computer science! The game crashes on my Window XP Professional system, 512MB RAM, 1.6 GB processor *and* a (supposedly) supported NVidia card. The error message it left in the application log was entirely useless, demonstrating just how terrible the programming must be on this thing. Ubisoft's technical support is non-existent.

Disappointing Sequel

I eagerly awaited this fourth installment of the Myst series, after having LOVED the last one (Myst3, Exile). I went so far as to buy a new computer since my old one was too slow, had to get a new video card for it, I even had to upgrade the power supply to make sure the new video card worked! I finally was able to play the latest Myst installment!
Unfortunately, the gameplay was not all it was cracked up to be, and the story was a bit disjointed...with such high system requirements, I expected a LOT more from the game. Each age took FOREVER to load, ruining any sort of seamlessness when linking; there should have been some sort of option to have more of the game on the hard drive. The 3-D, in my opinion, was also a bit of a waste. Some things were unable to be seen unless you were standing juuuuuust right...I felt Myst 3 was better rendered, and the graphics were better...it was a shame to sacrifice that just for the 1st/3rd person 3-D interface...the "no save" option was frustrating when attempting some complicated jumping that could send you plummeting to your death...many of the 'hints' in the game were SO buried they were missed out of boredom of leafing through senseless journals and notes...Hopefully, the newer ages written for on-line play will have improved over the initial game...
On the up-side, some of the puzzles were pretty tricky, making for some good mental aerobics, and some of the backgrounds looked amazing...it was neat being able to be yourself, too...

Overall, I think they should drop the 3-D interface, try to go back to the Myst3 format, forget about the 'live action' aspect 9the Tomb Raider style jumping)...nice try, guys, but it just didn't hit the mark...

Oops Beyond Myst Missed!

What a disappointment, and all because game play is spoiled by a technical detail. The cursor is all but unmanageable, and on my 3 GHz machine with excellent graphics, it is only barely usable in 800 x 600 mode, not at all in higher resolution modes. The lagging, overshooting, cursor makes looking for hot spots in the game quite difficult. I have tried the game out on several machines of varying clock speed, and the problem only gets worse on slower machines. There is no control within the game for mouse sensitivity or polling rate, and apparently the mouse position is polled too infrequently.

All of his/her points are valid. My big gripes and why I'll probably never get any further in this game, are (1) that the "camera" angles are so off--at some points if I play in the 1st person, I can't see what I need to see; if I switch to 3d person, the character becomes too clumsy. (2) Time: I do not have hours and hours all at the same time to just play a game; I work, I have a chores, I have a life. When you have to wait so long and go through so many dance steps just to reload so you can attempt a jump one more time (and fail) over and over again, the game is worthless and becomes un-fun and gets stuck in the attic for when I retire or win the Lottery or something. (3) Saving: I can't continually replay the same sequences that I successfully did before just to get back to where I ran out of time last time around. If a game creator is adamant about controlling when the game will save automatically, then those segments must be reasonably spaced for real people who have to hold down jobs and have school and other life-like things to do.

Unclear specifications

Although it lists
"Video Card: 32 MB NVIDIA GeForce 1, 2, 3, 4, or FX; ATI Radeon 7000-9800 or better"
as the required specifications, The Geforce 2 MX series doesn't seem to be supported (from the constant crashing).

A great adventure in an wonderfully immersive game!

Cyan has done a fantastic job! They've taken all the great aspects of their MYST games and put it in a new 3D universe! The graphics, story, music, and sounds are awesome! Uru is an extremely immersive game; it's a great adventure and has many worlds to explore woven with a complex storyline. The controls can be bit tricky at first, but after exploring a little it's now second nature. The online community and forums are a great resource for hints and stories. Uru is a wonderful place to explore.

I thought this game was awesome. As long as you have the required components, that are right on the Box!, and me personally, i dont care about online uru. The graphics were excellent, the puzzles were challenging, but not impossible, and i thought it was fun.

Having finished, I changed my mind.

I reviewed the game before, maybe even twice, I don't remember, when I was only partway through. Having finished it, I've decided that the plusses far outweight the minuses, and I've rekindled my total Myst obsession. It's really too bad that Live was scrapped by Ubi (*insert lots of nasty comments about UbiSoft*) because Cyan obviously worked very hard. The forthcoming expansion packs should be fantastic, though, and avoid the server lag problems that Live had.

This is the major caveat: THEY MEAN IT with the system specs. If your system does not match or exceed what's on the box, this game will be a waste of your money. Other than that, I found that all of the puzzles were eventually solvable (far easier than Riven, anyway), and that even the hardest jump puzzles were doable after some practice (and I'm really bad at jumping games). I just can't wait to see more. Beautiful.

I was certainly impressed...

Let me preface this by saying I haven't played Myst, and I have only played a little of Riven.
I have found URU to be a great game, the main problem being technical - it takes a big 3D graphics card, and there is an annoying lag between 'scenes' as the software is loaded, or whatever. Also, why are these games not able to be played with a joystick? I must be naive about something here.
Now that the negative is out of the way, the positive is that this a great game with logical puzzles, not impossible, fantastic story, and fantastic areas to explore. There is no boredom in playing, and there are several factors which personalize the game. The graphics and sounds are the best I've ever seen in a PC game. I'm 37, this has been a great game to play in the evenings for relaxation....
