I've had this game since the day it came out. What, about a year now? Anyway, I very much enjoyed playing the single player game through. After I completed it, I set it aside. Coming back to it, it's still the second best game in my collection (Deus Ex is hard to top). If you enjoy FPS games, then you should give this a try. It's a cut above the usual Doom and Quake type shooters, as you are allowed plenty of flexibility as to how your character performs in the game. You are given upgrade points, and can put them towards whatever attributes you want.. which basically means you can play the game in a number of ways. You aren't really given the freedom that a game like Morrowind or Deus Ex gives you, but the game does ask you to think about what you want to do, and it accommodates your decisions better than most games.

However, after coming back a year later, the single player FPS part of the game isn't what keeps me playing it. I'm addicted to the Light Cycle races, now. The light cycles are the most innovative, hyper, and fun thing I've seen in a game in a long time. I'd rather play Light Cycles than buy Half Life 2 at this point.

Overall, this game has a lot to offer you. It isn't the kind of game that you'll stop playing after it's done. With the multiplayer and light cycle modes, you shouldn't be done with this game until the sequel comes around.

Disappointing

The original TRON arcade game from the early 80's is still my favorite arcade game of all time. I played it all the time and, if I ever see it anywhere (which is rarely) I would continue to play it.

So, I was really looking forward to this game.

The good news is the game looks good. The graphics and sound are terrific. The story is reasonably involving. The battle scenes with the discs are fun.

But unfortunately, the game play throws it all off.

Too much time is spent running around, looking through emails, getting passcodes, getting the permissions to open up the box that has the emails and passcodes in it, etc. Mainly just busy work, not really entertaining.

Plus, there is a whole RPG like, leveling up sort of thing, where you have to customize all your abilities that is also just busy work.

The game does have a few glitches as well. I reached a point, midway through the game where I had to find the cheat code to skip a level as there was a glitch that wouldn't allow me to do something in the game play.

And finally, the light cycle races. Again, this looks cool, and is a lot of fun for a time. But some of these races are just too long with no midway save points (they are broken into three races and if you fail on the third, you have to start over from race one. I could never beat that third so had to give up the whole game.)

So, for me, the game didn't live up to expectations. But, for what the game is going for (as I write this I see used copies available for under $5) it is probably worth picking up.

You'd better have the hardware and resources for this one

The game is really a high-powered, resource using, grapical eye-candy "shooter".

It is really LUDICROUS that this game requires a lot of PC Power and resources - at least a P3700mhz, (p4 RECOMMENDED), more than 256 megs of ram (384 & UP is BEST), a good chunk of hard drive space (maybe around 1 gig or TWO), and MOST IMPORTANTLY, A GRAPHICS CARD WITH (T&L-Transform and Lighting - NVIDIA) or CHARISMA ENGINE POWERED card from ATI. If you have a fast enough PC, you're going to have to spend about $50 or more for a graphics card to play this thing, if you don't have the required hardware to do so.

So, it may cost you $60 - $100 and up just to play this game.
Consider upgrading your card not just for this thing, but only if you use your pc for DVD viewing and other graphics-intensive tasks.

Whoah Disney...

This game is, without a doubt, the best game I have ever played on my pc. The graphics are beautiful - they have pushed the technology well. Of course, I just bought a GeForce FX 5600 so that I could play it well.. It would be a shame to waste any of the beauty. I have to say, I have always liked first person shooters, but I have never found one this good. The bosses are hard to beat, but not too hard -- after all, you play a user, and you're just fighting computer programs. It's so far removed from reality that you don't even question it, unlike some games, where it seems so real, so much like it could really happen, and then some crazy looking monster comes out and tries to beat you up, destroying the immersive experience. Here, you do get beaten up a bit, but, at least on easy, it's not annoyingly hard. Anyway, buy this game. You REALLY won't regret it. :)

Nothing else quite compares

This game is about as good as any game I have ever played. First of all, and most importantly, it runs well. I have had no problems running it with the settings set to the max, and I don't have the highest end computer. P4 2.26, radeon 9500 pro. Some newer games have lower system requirements, and don't run nearly as well as this. Graphically, the game is outstanding. They are as good as any game out there. The games creators really designed the maps well, and if it was actually possible to be inside a computer, I have no problem believing that this is what it looks like. The sounds, and music are extremely emmersive. You certainly get the feeling you are there. The story is creative, and well thought out. This game is more then just running around killing bad guys. It draws you in. The only negative thing I can think of, is the ending doesn't reveal everything you want to know, but other then that, if you don't like this game, there is something wrong with you, even if you're not old enough to remember the movie.

What? A GOOD Disney sequel? IMPOSSIBLE!

But here it is. A storyline that is wonderfully immersive in a beautiful setting with equally beautiful music. Impossible? Sheesh, I thought so too! But being an FPS fan, I went ahead and picked it up with my christmas gift certificates on a whim after I couldn't find another game I wanted.

After installing it, I was thrown into a complex story woven between a father and son, an AI written in memory of a lost wife, and conspiracies of world domination.

Jet Bradley, son of Alan Bradly from the original Tron movie, is on the phone with his dad when the connection is suddenly cut after what sounds like a struggle. Jet goes to his office to find out what happened, and asks Ma3a, a friendly (and female) replacement for the MCP, what happened. The panicked program, who discovered a computer virus in her system just before Alan was abducted, sucks Jet into the computer, hoping he can help combat the danger lurking inside. What he finds is a human-turned-computer virus, the first (failed) attempt at a conspiracy to dominate the world through the internet. The people attempting this need Ma3a to stabilize the process that digitizes a human body successfully into a computer.

Together Jet and Ma3a try to find the second version of Tron to stop the conspirators and save the world. Unfortunately, this program contains a bug that is deadly to digitized humans, which they don't know about until it is too late. All hell breaks loose as Jet has to clean up the mess left by the virus, the conspirators, and himself.

The story is seen through the eyes of Jet, but as you go on, you read the story from many points of view by downloading e-mails inside the computers you visit. The effect is like a video game combined with a good book, and it's VERY hard to put down. You are given connections from the past, as well as hints to the future. The plot is seamlessly woven into the first movie, tying up loose ends without being TOO convenient.

My only gripe is that, unfortunately, Tron himself never appears. Ma3a assimilates the source code for the second version. (And gets a dress for her trouble. Somebody tell me what Alan was planning?)

The graphics are no less than gorgeous and play smoothly with all settings turned up on a simple 1 gHz Athlon and a cheap Geforce 4 MX. (Heh. Maybe the reason some have trouble is because of those darn P4s! LOL) But even if your computer is a bit crippled, do not forget to turn on the glow. For it is not Tron without it!

The gameplay allows you to mix and match your user powers on a whim to create different effects. Subroutines add new functions to simple weapons. (And, as said by others, you'll probably end up using the original weapon most of the time, which is unusual for an FPS.)

I saw only one bug the entire first time I played through (A visual one that did not hinder gameplay), and this was without a patch.

Anywho, a very well spent 20 dollars. Yes, the game is hard. Incredibly so at times. But it's not impossible, and is definitely challenging. I almost bit off my lip at times, but boy was it satisfying to beat!

Oh, and did I mention that you get to ride a light cycle? :)

The best deal....

I got this for $2.99. This is by far, the greatest software deal I've ever gotten, short of getting Star Control II as a gift for christmas 10+ years ago. First, I liked the movie Tron, so it didn't take much for me to buy the game. Second, I'm in IT by profession... So fantasizing a PC and its architecture is fun for me personally... (although how they depict and use terminology is maddening, you realize its just for fun) Lastly... I got this thing ROCK CHEAP. (bargain bin at some random store) If you liked the style and gameplay of System Shock 2, you'll like this game, as much of the same look n' feel are the same, indeed some of the sounds and graphics are similiar. The storyline is similiar to the movie, and its fairly well laid out. I like the upgrading and optimization of routines. Overall very fun. And of course... the light cycles.
It will not make the top 10 greatest games of all time, (like I said its a derivative work of System Shock 2), but it is fun.

Off to a good start... then crashes

I picked up this game rather late: I have given up on keeping ahead with computer upgrades, I just want to settle for games that run well on my current hardware. Tron 2.0 does and a few years down the road, it was very cheap to buy.

This game got off to a great start, it was great fun submerging in the world of Tron, a truly different experience from your regular shooter. Unfortunately, when I was finally introduced to the light cycles (only the second level), the game kept crashing hard on my Windows XP system. It took the entire computer with it and did a hard reboot (my system is configured NOT to do that ever). I am running the latest Tron patch, it doesn't seem to make any difference. I tried and tried but after hard reboots 5 times in a row (all in the light cycles practise arena), I was forced to give up and stop playing this game.

A real shame... I would have loved to see what is beyond this level, but I simply can't reach it.

A Dream given form!

As a child I went to see Tron in the summer of 1982. My life was changed forever. Though there were a few arcade games based on the Tron movie and a handfull of home system games there was still a longing for something more. Another adventure, not just a few games set in Tron's world was necessary. The years passed and though I never forgot about Tron, I put any thought of a sequel out of my ming. Disney had moved on to better things I guess. BOY WAS I WRONG! They fooled me into thinking the TRON legacy was over. TRON 2.0 was born and once again we have a fresh electronic world to explore.

Pretty good--if you liked the movie

This is one of those rare games that takes a movie franchise and turns it into a good gaming experience. I saw the original Tron movie back in the 1980s and really liked it. This game captures the spirit and look of the film. However, because it sticks pretty closely to the conventions of the first-person shooter (FTS) genre (i.e., run-and-gun fighting, silly jumping tricks, unending searches for health packs, etc.), the gameplay itself does not distinguish it from the crowd of FPS games out there. Only the movie tie-in makes it worth playing in my opinion. Thus, gamers who never saw (or liked) the movie may not appreciate how faithful this game is to the film, or care.

Gameplay: As stated above, the typical FPS game. Controls (AWSD, mouse, etc.) are fairly standard and easy to learn. Both the discs and light cycles are fun for a while, and the game has a leveling system like in role-playing games that allows your character (Jet) to get better over time. The game includes a bit too many key hunts and jumping mini-games for my taste, but overall delivers a good 20-hours of solid gameplay.

Graphics: The game looks better than the movie, which should be no surprise 20 years after the movie was released. You do get the sense that you are inside of a massive computer that is self-aware and in crisis. The use of lighting and colors is about the most creative you'll see in any game. Character models and animations are pretty good, as are special effects.

Sounds: Appropriate for a game based on a computer theme. Beeps, synthesizers, and so forth. The music is mostly from or inspired by the movie. Voice acting is pretty decent but not very memorable.

Technical issues: The game ran very smoothly for me. I had two crashes to desktop, but no big deal since you can save the game at any point and in multiple slots. The manual is good and the first part of the game is a tutorial.

Replayability/Value: Not much replayability for the single-player mode. There is the campaign and light-cycle "skirmishes," but nothing else. In multiplayer, you can go online and have duels with discs, but I don't know if there is much of an online community for this game nowadays.

Bottom line, if you liked the movie, you'll like this game. You really can't go wrong at the current price ($10). However, if you never saw the movie or didn't like it, this is simply a pretty decent FPS game, nothing more.

Overall rating : 3.75 stars (out of 5)

Pros:
+faithful translation of the movie
+excellent visuals
+light cycles are fun
+good manual

Cons:
-a typical FPS game
-limited replayability for solo gamers
