there is no hype to follow with this game, it is as good as people say it is. my only problem with it is the music, it doesnt "fit" the game... in fact is horrible. the custom soundtrack feature is its saving grace because without it, this game wouldnt be 5 stars in opinion.

Burnout 3 is flat-out fun. If you're looking for flashy, custom cars with crappy crashes, go get NFSU 2. If you're looking for fast paced racing with death-defying crashes, pick this up. Amazing game, online play and fun crashes. What more could you want?
Wow - what a disappointment...

I loved Burnout 2. Loved it. Whenever a few friends would come round for drinks B2 would be slapped in. Sure the racing was nice and opening cars and tracks added to the games' longevity but for the most fun you had to have a 'crash' party. When Burnout 3 was announced I was stoked - new cars, better graphics, extra modes and of course - more crashes!
Unfortunately, this game is ruined for me for two reasons - firstly, during racing Burnout 3 has the single most cheating AI ever. Full stop. You can be *20+ seconds* ahead and crash and be at the back. Now I may not be a Phd here but unless the crash took 20+ seconds to happen there is no physical way they could have caught up. Crashes take a couple of seconds. So how did the AI cars manage to catch up? Simply put, they cheat. The game uses rubber-banding to ensure the cars are only ever a certain distance away. Want to check that - try going slow... meander along at 30 mph and the opponents will too. This took ANY skill away from the racing aspect of the game.
Okay but there's still crash mode right? Well amazingly enough the developers took the pure simplicity of B2's crash mode and turned it into a fiasco. Point one - crashing was all about chance. You chose a vehicle, raced like mad and picked the most opportune time to crash. After that it was in the hands of the panel-beating gods. In B3 however you have 'aftertouch'; you can now control your car's direction to some degree in mid-air. This takes away chance and replaces it with skill and this is a step backward. The final nail in B3 crash modes coffin is the multilpliers. Dotted around the crash levels are little childish bonus icons that give you extras and, as such, render the crash levels to be nothing more than collecting tasks. There's NO point attempting to not go for the 4x multiplier. None. So once you have scored it, you're pretty much done with that crash level. No more choosing the right time to crash or experimenting with various methods. In Burnout 3 crashing is ALL about hitting that 4x. Nothing more. The replay is also awful - it's EXACTLY what you saw during the game - just behind the vehicle. No cameras cuts to enhance the fun.
You also HAVE to play the other modes to unlock crash modes first. Again this is a departure from B2 - WHY?
So that leaves Road Rage Takedown - the only part of B3 that added from B2 but that didn't hold my interest for long.
Graphically it's all candy for the eyes as to be expected, but if you're a massive fan of Burnout 2 then expect some major changes in B3 that, in my opinion, ruin the game.
BUY IT! BUY IT! BUY IT!

I rented this game yesterday, already knowing that I want to get it for Christmas REALLY bad!! But I just couldn't take it. I had to play this game BEFORE Christmas!! So I rented it and now, I can't take my hands off of the controller since it is one of the most addicting games I have ever played! EVER!!! There is just so much to do and unlock, that in one hour, I was only about 5% away from completing the ENTIRE game!!! Seriously, it is that long!!! Everything is outstanding in this game! The gameplay, graphics, sound EVERYTHING!!!! The most impressive thing that I witnessed was not only the crashes, but the sheer sense of speed!!! This game has accomplished something NO other racing title has. (Extreme G and F Zero GX don't count. They are futuristic racers!) I thought nothing could beat NFS Underground, but Burnout 3 did!!! When you are on the highway, going 150 MPH, it feels insanely dangerous!!! Overall, this is a must-have game! Even if you hate racers, there is something for everyone in Burnout 3! EA and Criterion, any ideas on Burnout 4?????
If you haven't gotten it, buy it. Skip the review and buy it

This game was the first game I got with my new Xbox, along with Halo 2. I played Halo, and (sorry, Halo fans skip over this part) I was unimpressed. I popped in Burnout 3 and about died of shock. By the first crash, I knew it - the game is pure GOLD!
Not having owned any other consoles - SNES, PS, etc. - only a computer, maybe I haven't played enough other great racing games to compare this to. However, I have played NFS: High Stakes and the earlier games like it. This game makes those look like pong on wheels. It's so over the top with all the things you'd never want to do in real life - racing top-notch cars at 205 mph down a freeway filled with traffic - and energizes it to thwart even the high speed crashes in movies. It satisfies that little peice of all of us that makes us want to put the pedal to the mat and feel that rush of untamed adrenaline. However, none (or not many) of us really go out and race our cars into oncoming traffic, and this game gives us the next best thing. We can watch the consequences of smashing head-on into a line of cars all while sitting safely in our living rooms.
It's just one of thos great games you can't research up on, you have to just go out and buy it for yourself. This review can't possibly give justice to explaining how cool the crashes are in this game (if you didn't pick up on it, the crashing part is what really makes this game shine). Cars don't just dent and bounce off each other like the bumper-car styles of lesser games. Wheels fly off. Doors fly open and windows shatter. Your car launches like a bullet into the sky, stopping only when gravity or a building gets in the way (whichever comes first). It crumples, it explodes. Heck, in Road Rage mode (where your car maintains the scars of crashing throughout the race) the hood will even loosen enough to where it flies up and (semi-)blinds you. It isn't just a minor inconvenience when you crash in this game. It's an adventure!
All in all, the game is great and is actually a challenge in some parts (I'm still stuck on my latest Grand Prix! I always crash!) There are so many modes of play (Crash, Race, etc.) that are so easy to just jump into and play, that you'll keep coming back for more. It's not an overly-complex game that you have to be in a certain mood to play, but a satisfing way to quench your thirst for speed (and vehicular carnage). So if you haven't, stop reading and go out and BUY IT! Don't settle for the bargain-bin rip off racers. This is a racer's dream come true.
Note to young gamers or concerned parents: Rated Teen for violence. The violence in the game is not running over people or anything, there is no blood or vehicular homicide scenarios (obviously). However, some may view it as violent when the game rewards you for causing as many pile-ups (dollar amounts are everything, people!) as you can. And very mild language (D@*n van!) messages will flash onscreen at times during the race (like when you crash into a van).
Also, rest assured you can turn the idiotic DJ off that some reviews complained of (I have mixed feeling on the feature).
Just some facts for the curious. Now, if you still haven't quit yet, stop all this reading and get it!
Awesome GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can remember playing burnout 2 with a couple of friends and saying "hey, wouldn't it be cool if those logs flew off the truck when it crashed? And it was even faster? Or what if there were explosions!?"...
A couple of years later and logs being turned into barrels, dreams have come true!
Hmmm, where to start? After months and months of downloading and drooling over every pic and preview video of burnout3 I could find, there was a woozy feeling in my stomach when I learned there was no release date for the Gamecube. Lighting candles and meditative prayer didn't work so... I bought an Xbox. Yes that's right, I actually bought the whole console so that I wouldn't be left out of the fun *hangs head in shame*... Yes of course I could play Halo and watch DVD's etc etc blah blah blah. But I bought it so I could play burnout 3 and I haven't looked back since.
First thoughts: It's different, better, but worse at the same time. Like buying a new pair of shoes. The graphics were nice, and the cars were fast, very fast...no, you don't understand, I'm talking warp-speed, time travel type fast. But, after playing burnout 2 for more hours than I've had hot meals I felt disappointed.
Gone were the days of crashing for little or no apparent reason. No longer did you need to hone yours skills to micrometric and nanosecond perfection. You could also throw relationship-ending hours of practice out of the window. The game was too easy! At points where hitting a corner (inside or outside) in burnout 2 would have caused a game-losing crash, burnout 3 seems to say "ahhh that's ok, keep going!" At points I felt myself actually trying to crash just so that I knew it could still be done.
That is, before I played a bit more, and the levels got harder, and the cars even faster, and opponents more sinister. That's when the velvet glove came off and the iron palm wrapped its cold fingers around me - I was hooked!
*sweating late hours into the night...shaking the control pad as if to inflict some pain and trauma back into the game... screaming "WHY!? WHY!?" at the TV maniacally... scaring my lil sister with red, glaring eyes... Shouting curses that would have made the kids in south park blush. I couldn't stop playing. It's awesome, no, what's a better word for awesome? It's that! The speed, the drifting, the never-ending laps, the shunts, bumps and crashes. It's a joy to play for anyone who loves speed and action and mayhem.
But now, for the downside.
Where has the pursuit mode gone? And why can't you mix cars from different classes? Why can't we configure the control pad ourselves? No horn!? Half the fun of Bo2 was driving down the wrong side of the road blasting your horn! Lol. Why no night-time, or wet, or snowy conditions? Why only a choice of 3 colours of a car? (when you do get a choice) Why is that announcer so annoying? (Trust me and turn him off) Why dumb down the skill level? What the [four letter word] happened to the music? Come on now, are you really trying to tell me that everyone who likes this kind of game likes that kind of music? Every thought about maybe some hip-hop, drum & bass, House, soul, garage, dancehall or even bhangra? Oh well, at least you can use your own soundtrack.
Moan over here are some of the improvements over burnout 2;
More racers in a game. Explosions will always make you smile! Signature takedowns. Way more courses. Loads more cars. F1 cars! *evil grin* Better A.I.
And here's what we want from burnout 4:
Yes, you guessed it...It has to be even faster (yes I am mad)
More cars. The ability to do stunts! You know, taking steep corners on 2 wheels, driving under trailers if you've got a low enough car, that sort of thing. Dangerous shortcuts. Car customisation (need for speed style). The ability to create you own track/race/tournament. Most importantly - destructible scenery. Can you imagine it?; Crashing on a barrier, steering your car into a tree/lamppost, said tree breaking at point of impact and falling into the road right on top of an opponent? Mmmm... Or taking out fences, shop fronts, walls etc. I mean how many times have you been bounced about by signs when you should have ripped it to shreds? How about scenery damage that lasts the whole race (yes, ok except trees blocking the entire road) Now there's a game that would be worth stepping over your sick mother for! One last thing - please bring it to Nintendo! *puss in boots eyes*
Overall - is it worth buying? Yes. Is it worth buying an Xbox for? Yes. Why are you still sitting there!?
This is the best video game I've ever played. (xbox)

Burnout 3 takes care of the thing Homer Simpson calims Americans do best: "Dirve without any regard to the rules of the road." This game is full of racing, crashing, destruction... Anything you need to get your fill of car wrecks.
The entire point of this awsome game is "risk=reward." The more dangerous youe driving is, the more boost you get to speed your way to first place. The more races you win, the more events (and cars!) you unlock. The best way to win races: throw your opponets off the race track (aka takedown). But don't expect to win that easily: just because the other racers are computers doesn't mean that they don't want to take you down as well. Avoid the racers (and the traffic) and you'll be winning races really quickly.
But wait, there's more. Yes, I know what you're thinking: "But how is a racing game able to include more than just racing?" Well, EA Games didn't put "Don't fight traffic, destroy it" on the case just because it sounds cool. The other major part of this game is "crash" mode, where you take the ultimate risk. The point of this: cause as much destruction, chaos, and crashes as possible. When you've caused a pre-determined amount of crashes, you press a button to activate the crshbreaker: this is where you blow up your own car to cause even more destruction (I did say ultimate risk!). When the its over, the game totals up how much money in damage you've caused, adds it with bounses you pick up and that's your score.
Burnout 3: Takedown is perfect for kids that have parents that won't let them get Halo 2. Burnout has taken racing games to a whole new level, and it's all I ever play when I'm on my Xbox. Unfortuantatly, I dont have Xbox Live (yet!) but this game is probably really fun to play against other players. One thing that bothers me is that when you take someone down, the camera focuses on the wrecked car flying through the air, making it hard to see where you're going, but the graphics make up for it. One more pro before I stop: The aftertouch, where you can steer your totaled car into other cars (or over the railing, whatever makes you happy). Or if you just like to watch crash scenes, hold down the aftertouch button to watch your smash in slow-mo. Burnout 3 is a great game: I highly recomend it.
VERY Addictive

I like driving games, but this one is better than any I have played. I've introduced about a dozen people to this game and they have all gone out and bought there own copy. This game plays best with a steering wheel, gas and brake pedals.
The driving is great, you get points by crashing your opponents and get "turbo" by doing power slides and driving dangerously (against traffic, getting air, etc.). Then if you are tired of racing you can crash into busy intersections and see how much damage you can do. The game totals up the dollar damage and number of vehicles totaled.
Get the game, the only regret you'll have is how much time you play it.
Wickedly Fast, Incredibly Brutal

Burnout 3 is the best arcade racer I have ever played, and quite possibly, the best 'traditional' racer likewise.
With realistic racing sims flooding the video game market (Gran Turismo, Forza Motorsport) it is nice to see a racing game this simple, and this accessible. This game is about fast cars, and brain-rattling car crashes.
Burnout 3's racing is very straight forward, and rewards you for driving dangerously. Racing towards oncoming traffic, narrowly avoiding traffic (think Crazy Taxi) and drifting around corners gives you boost, which you can use to increase your speed even further (emphasized by a nice blur effect). But driving aggressively and taking out your opponents is also rewarded: knock them into the side of the track or oncoming traffic, take them out, and your boost bar wil increase in size and fill up completely. Crash again, and your boost bar decreases, bringing a nice balance to the gameplay.
The racing is ridiculously fast, and drifting around corners and weaving through traffic is addicting. Better still, it's made more intense by a huge sense of danger... one crash could lose you the race.
The crashes, as in past Burnout games, are out of control. The cartoony graphics don't make them any less horrifying. That's the series' claim to fame, and it shows. Glass shatters, metal crumples, tires fly, cars roll out of control, grinding against pavement, smashing into anything in their path... It's something to see.
Best yet, it isn't just a racer. In World Tour mode, you'll see all kinds of events (many that you can play on their own any time you want.) These run from time trials, to Eliminator races (last car to pass the finish line each lap is eliminated until only one is left), road rage (see how many Takedowns you can achieve against three opponents until either the time runs out or your car is destroyed) to Crash mode.
Crash mode is where the debris really flies. Pick a car and barrel towards a busy intersection (with one hundred to unlock and choose from) and see how much destruction you can cause. Once enough cars block the streets its almost disturbing watching the speeding traffic barrel into the pile-up. Once a certain number of crashes have occurred, use the Crashbreaker, which causes your car to explode, causing more chaos, and allowing you to steer what remains of your car in slow motion towards power ups and money multipliers.
Best of all, this game has a wealth of unlockables. It keeps track of points you earn for driving well in races, monetary damage caused during crashes, takedowns achieved, and rewards you with cars, new courses, etc. for reaching certain goals. This not only gives you great incentive to go back and play some more, it is a satisfying way to work for unlockables.
This game, especially at its new lower price point, is highly recommended.
