Great RPG

As one of the only RPGs to grace the Nintendo Gamecube, Tales of Symphonia presents itself as a great RPG.

The combat system is its biggest plus. Battling is addictive and fun, set in realtime yet featuring the series' traditional line-based battling. Despite the battle system set on a 3D course, however, players can only battle on lines drawn between them and the enemies (meaning that the player cannot bypass the enemy if there is only one on screen without having to resort to special techs or jumping, both not always successful). Players can choose from attacking normally, using special techs, jumping, guarding, and using items (when needed). It's a very action-based system (as have all Tales RPGs ever since the debut of Tales of Eternia) with very little room for comfort, so many casual gamers might not want to pick it up if they are not comfortable battling fervently.

While the battle system shines brightly, the storyline and characters are subpar, if not weak. Despite the fact that the storyline does get better at the latter half of the game (and introduces some neat viewpoints from the main antagonist), there is no denying it - the game is full of cliches and stereotypical characters. Both Lloyd and Collete are two characters most hardcore gamers probably have had enough of (the typical dumb swordsman who is stubbornly protagonistic and the typical female protagonist who is 100% dependent on the male lead). There are no surprises for the vast majority of characters (with Kratos, Zelos, Genis, and Raine being the likely exceptions) nor is there a lot of depth when it comes to character development (if there is depth, it is usually cliched). The storyline will turn down most hardcore gamers at the beginning, as the storyline is extremely cliched (so much that I dropped the game for a few weeks until my friends told me to just bear through it). Despite all of this, it is comforting that the storyline progresses into something much better (with the end of the antagonist being arguably the best part).

Music is handled, once again, by Motoi Sakuraba, who has (to the best of my knowledge) worked on every single Tales game prior to this (Tales of Legendia features work from a person who goes by "Go Shiina"). However, I would say that this is certainly not one of his best compositions - the synths are very awkward and some of the songs aren't exactly strong. Aside from that, the music won't detract at all (and in many cases it will aid the game).

Voice acting is where it hurts. Albeit most US voice acting jobs are quite subpar compared to their Japanese counterparts, the voices for some of the characters simply don't fit. Raine, Genis' sister, sounds more like his mother (although she does assume this role, the concept art depicts Raine/Refill as much younger looking). Voices such as Presea's could have been better (the Japanese VA seems much better at presenting Presea as a human with... certain problems rather than a machine of some kind). And for the most part, the game is terribly cliched, often presenting lines that we've simply grown to hate. I always manage to look away and think about something else when the final non-anime cutscene rolls...

However, even with a few blemishes, this game is almost a "must have" RPG. The gameplay is simply amazing (and feels a lot tighter than Tales of Eternia, for example) and just fun.

Those who enjoy Tales of Symphonia may want to consider picking up either the next in line, Tales of Legendia, or try and import over Tales of the Abyss, handled by the same team (that did ToS).

greatest game ever, congrats to namco!!!

This has to be the best game for gamecube.

Pros:
-The story is VERY original
-The battling system is the best I have ever played, you actually move around and really fight, the fighting alone could make a cool game
-You can change which character you want to move around and fight with. Each character has a different battle method
-the music is origanal and good.
-the voice acting is funny and adds a lot.
-Just the overall stuff you do is a 100/100!
Cons
-They sometimes cus. I think it is rather funny and adds to the game, but many will not agree.
-To some people the graphics are sorta weird, I thought that at first then I liked them more than 'real' graphics.
-if you are seeing if this game is appropriate for kids under 13, I would say that if you are ok with kinda bad words, they say none of the really bad stuff Iwould say it is approprate.

Overall, this game is a must buy, 2 disks for 20$!!!(yes it comes with 2 disks that is how long it is.)

Not worth the $$$

Wow, was I disappointed in this game! After reading all the positive reviews I was certain this is what i was looking for. Not in the least. RPG fan since the beginning (Commodore 64 - Ultima Series / Nintendo - Zelda / Baldur's Gate), this did not amount to them in the least. Too much dialog that you can't skip through... I was only into 20 minutes and I knew this was going to be a waste! I gave a few days, and it will never see the power button again. You have to listen to this mindless / pointless dribble as this animated children characters talk about nothing... it goes on and on! Then you have to go follow the quest as 'it' unravels. Sure you can go to different places, but you have to follow the story to a tee. Not for me! This will be enjoyed by today's youth, but as a seasoned rpg who is used to developed / indepth thought processes (Ultima / Myst), this is just too childish. Shame on the reviews to date. I should never have tossed my commodore. Good luck in your choosing!!!

looks AWESOME!!!!!!!!

If you like RPG's then this is your game. This game has great graphics, an immersive storyline, sidequests, mini-games, and a colorful cast of characters in your party ranging from the Chosen One, to Elves to Mercenaries. This game is long. So long they had to put it onto TWO disks. It took me over 40 hours to finish this game.

This was one of my favorit rgs and its the best one for GC. Anyways Dont think this game sucks from wat other people say about it. Anyone who playes this game will love it(unless u dont like rgs). You can also play with your friends on this game 1-4 players. Theres only 1 problem the camera follows the first player. But other then that there nothing bad with the game. You get tons of game time 60-100 hours. Tons of mini quest for u. I never got bored with this game.I beat the game and im already playing it again. So make a good choice and go buy this game. But if your not 2 sure about rent it first. Well i hope this review was helpful for u.

This game is great i love the feature that you can actually control your own attacks unlike other RPGs. This game is great but very hard at some points. The graphics are the best on the GC.The cutscenes are also amazing.

I have read many reviews to the next sequel to the Tales series. And this game sounds like a great one. I personally have not played the game but want to pre order it. From what i've read the story is about a 16-17 year old boy named Lloyd Irving and his friend Colette Brunel the "chosen one" and a half elf named Genis. And the plot is you know the whole save the world thing except what makes this game an exception is that two worlds are intertwined together so that the salvation of one world means the destruction of the other. and the plot unravels from there. The game has a Linear Battle system which makes it a full 3D battle and you are charging the enemies and beating them up and you gain levels and what not. The closest thing to that would be the Final fantasy series. The game also has many familar voices which you will recognize when you hear it. Well this game sounds and looks due to its (cel shaded graphics) like a winner and you as well as I should consider looking into it more...and more...and more...etc. etc.
