I've been a fan of Super Smash Bros ever since it came out, and years later I still play it often! Can't wait for Smash Bros Brawl to come out for the Wii! This game is great for both single and multi player, and the amount of items, characters, and stages to unlock keeps the game fun for years on end. Highly recommended!
Just how much time DO you want to waste playing?

I never thought I would like an ordinary "fighting" game. I mean, what's the point? You fight, right?
Wrong.
The unique thing about this game is you can play as so many different characters. So, you need to learn which characters have which strengths and weaknesses. You have to fight them all eventually. There are hidden characters, hidden levels, hidden event matches, and many unique battles and events you need to complete. I'm still working on unloicking the mysterious Celebi. This can be played by one to four players, with different types of melee battles.
What's most fun of all is the discovery of characters that Nintendo has released over the years. There are characters I played when I was in college (back when "Pong" was popular), and some I've never seen before (but have seen since). This was a fine example of marketing by Nintendo, because my son is looking for all the characters in different games now.
Overall, buy this game. If you're a kid, you might be able to get your father to play some of his old favorites. If you're an old man like me, this is a game you cam play with your kids (or, by yourself, if you're so inclined).
Great, but the original was better.

This is a very good video game, but for some reason they jacked up the characters a little, and the hammer is slower, but I gotta say, it had all the characters: Mario, DK, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox, Pikachu, Jigglypuff, C. Falcon, Ness, Luigi, and alot more like Peach, and Bowser. I definitely finds this a great game.
I personally like it...

fun/classic characters, bright colors, great for playing with friends -but not so much fun to play alone... so if your looking for a game you can play in solitude all day this probably isn't the one for you.
Nintendo 64 version was soooooo much better

The Video Game characters from the golden agecome together..... to create one game that is so boring I feel sorry for Link and Mario. However, I smiled a few times at the items you got such as a giant hammer (Donkey Kong, Arcade), a Poison mushroom (Super Mario Chronicles, Only in Japan), and an arrow barrel (Donkey Kong Country, Super Nintendo). The graphics had my mouth watering, but this game has so much to do that you eventually get tired of beating luigi and peach under a time limit, buying trophies out of a GUMBALL MACHINE, and trying do do event mode. Sorry Nintendo but you have been rejected!
Addictive yet very frustrating

If you would like to have your pulse race, this is the game for you. The advanced gameplay of this new Nintendo title can be a turnoff for many gamers. Ridiculous new modes don't deliver, however. The trophy mode is silly. Somehow game designers thought it would be fun to collect meaningless icons throughout the game and have a lottery to get new ones. The new CPU characters do not live up to expectations. While in the old SSB, CPU characters played like actual humans, where now they have disregard for their surroundings and only try to stalk you and slit your throat. I find battles with the computers are the same thing, many times over. There is no variety the the VS. mode unless you have friends over playing too. And with a poor 1 player mode, the only time the game is fun is when you have people over. The new stages are very busy, with obstacles that inhibit gameplay. Although they are interesting at first, they hardly act as a catalyst for more interesting play. The huge new levels force the camera to pan back ridiculously far, making your character a small spec on the screen. However, the graphics and the new music are wonderful, which are the redeeming qualities for this game. But if you want to get frustrated really quickly with unoriginal and methodical gameplay, this is the game for you.
Simply a rehash

If you're looking for the same game that you had on the N64 then you have found it, just with different stages. The gameplay is still as a tired as it was on the N64 and inevitably as boring as well. This game only adds to the growing concern that Nintendo has been and will continue to dull the senses with it's overemphasis on appealing to the younger audience. If you have a short attention span and want little depth to your fighters, then by all means purchase this game. Otherwise, stear clear of this one.
Great Fun for Young and Old!!

Nintendo has done it again... created another awesome fighting game. Many thought that Super Smash Bros. was the bomb, but now with Melee, there's an even wider array of things to do in the game.
CHARACTERS: 10/10
You begin with some of Nintendo's greatest creations: Mario, Bowser, Link, Fox McCloud, Peach and Bowser to name a few. Each one has a variety of awesome moves, especially their four special attacks (e.g.: Mario's fireballs.) Unlike their SSB counterparts, the characters in SSBM are excellently textured and rendered beautifully. The graphics and effects for the attacks are also stunning.
ARENAS: 10/10
You will be in for a suprise if you try any of the stages. Many stages have variety of tricky special elements to make the gameplay tenser. For example, on the Planet Zebes level, a flow of strong acids will pour into the arena and send anyone touching it up in flames. Not only that, the all 3-D arenas are breathtaking, especially if you see the Hyrule Temple course.
ITEMS: 10/10
Some classic items from many people's favorite Nintendo games show up in the courses just waiting to be used. Remember the super mushrooms from the good old days on Super Mario Bros? They're back in this game, same as always. Each item has a special classification such as healing, projectile, throwing item, special item, etc. and most of them should look familiar to Nintendo fans.
SINGLE PLAYER: 10/10
The single player has four special modes: classic, adventure, event and stadium. In classic, you must fight characters up until the last round, with a few mini-games in between rounds. In adventure, you battle your way through mazes and even a Super Mario Bros. like field. In them, you will have to face enemies like Goombas, Koopas, ReDeads, LikeLikes, Octorocks, etc. In event, you can select one of many specially designed challenges and complete an objective. Sometimes, you will be forced to select a particular character. You can unlock secret trophies and characters by completing levels. In stadium, you can try your hand at the "Break the Targets" minigame, the Homerun Contest where you have to hit a sandbag as far as possible and the wireframe enemy battle.
MULTIPLAYER: 10/10
You can fight any arena with any character in free-for-alls or team battles and select if you want timed battles, life battles, coin battles or style battles. You can even select a special mode such as slow-mo or lightning to change the battle even more.
OVERALL: 10/10
