My Uncle bought me a GameCube that was bundled with this game. I never forgot the day.
I put the disk into the newly plugged in system and immediately noticed I could instantly play... on the file select screen! It wasn't much, but I had fun screwing around with all the blocks.
I started on File A, and I saw the graphics. They were astounding! I had only played NES and N64 before, and I was attached to those. The first thing you get to notice is Mario's "new outfit". His overalls are lighter, and he wears his shirt rolled up. I ran around looking for something to do, and I came across the little toy thing, and it gave me a newer look.
The storyline is twisted. Mario is framed for covering the city with goop, although it is really a phony Mario. Thus, Mario must clean up, and return the Shine Sprites in order to restore sunlight in Isle Delfino.
For the gameplay. Now, I like to nickname it "Super Mario World 64". Why? Well, we of course have Mario doing some moves from the classic. The spin jump, for instance, does the opposite of it's original. It makes you go HIGHER. Mario is also able to pick things up. Also from SMW is Yoshi. He is used for his juice-squirting abilities and his eating, as in Super Mario World. Instead, Yoshi needs fruit to stay out of his egg form. the "64" is self-explanatory, as the game uses many things from Super Mario 64.
"Once you get all them shine thingys, you're done. Boooorinnggg."
Wrong. You not only have more items to collect, but you are able to explore the free world. Beating the game unlocks a special Shirt that you can wear with your sunglasses, another nice thing. Besides, as in every game, you got speed running to do!
You may remember "L is Real" from Mario 64. This time he is real! No, not for playing. He is in the 5th picture of the end credits. See if you can find him, and keep in mind, he's a jumper! ;)
Overall, it's a 10/10. Incredible graphics, gameplay, replay value, and fun. Lasts a long time!
A Well Made Game On The Edge of Too Easy Or Too Hard

As I said above, this game is well made. The graphics are colorful, bright, and there are many different textures and scenery. Overall, the graphics are no problem to this game.
An actual problem is the gameplay. At first, you should be able to cruise by a lot of levels, as long as you can aim water at sludge. But as you go on secret levels (like obstacle courses) become a bit of a tough spot. You can't use an internet guide to help you because it isn't a matter of where to go it's how are YOU are going to get there. There are other levels that are overally hard or easy too, but it isn't always a problem.
Overall- You'll probably enjoy this game a lot, but you'll proably also slam down the controller in frustration a bit. It has its good times but the bad ones are tedious and you may find yourself abandoing this game so be ready before you decide to buy. Not a waste but it has its bad moments.
Awesome game!!!

I got this game along time ago and amazingly i still play it alot!! Most video games (alot of mario ones) have the same thing... rescuing princess peach and i lose interest in them pretty fast. This one is actually different. Some of the things that you have to do on the game are kind of hard but I like that I have a challenge. This is overall and great game!!!!
A great game!

In my mind, there are two games that contend for the title of worst mario game ever, Super mario bros. 2 and the game I am reviewing.
But since super mario 2 was just a bizarre japanese game with mario characters pasted in, this game could take the no.1 spot easily.
Story:1/10
This could have been so much more. After years of the same mario storyline over and over, it seemed at the beginning of this game that they were going to take a different route. I was wrong. Dress it up any way you like, princess peach STILL gets kidnapped and mario saves her and whups bowser. On the same note, it is time for a new villan as well.
Graphics:5/10
Not a big boost from mario 64 really. Of course, everything is much smoother, and the textures are much better.
Controls:7/10
Mario has the same moves from mario 64, nothing much different.
Everything works well enough.
Difficulty:2/10
Not low for low difficulty, but for high difficulty. I love a difficult game, but this one goes about it all the wrong ways.
A game should not be difficult because of bouts with the immovable camera. Also, the platform stages can give anyone headaches.
This is so similar to mario 64 that I almost have to believe that this was once in development for the nintendo 64, then ported over to the gamecube. Considering this game is so poor in the areas of originality and the lack of any improvment AT ALL in camera angles from mario 64 lead me to think that this might have been an early test sequel to mario 64 on the nintendo 64 but then perhaps scrapped, then ressurected later on the gamecube. I think its very well possible.
Needed for this game: Patience

Note: I haven't really played this game in over a year (I played it for an hour last weekend to see why I had stopped)... This has to be the worst Mario game I have ever played before.
The beginning of the game is fun, a little disrupting with the camera angles, and trying to aim but all in all alright game play.
I got to about 47 sunsprites, and then from there I was stuck. This game definitly needs a lot of patience and the smallest wrong move will send you way back. Not much more to say since I am sure these points have been brought up many times before.
AWESOME!!!! my favorite of ALL my gc games!!

Mario is finally back! It's been a while since Mario has been on a 3D system and now he's on vacation! You have to go to Isle Delfino and clean up the mess you were blamed for with the FLUDD. It's a water shooting backpack. Your enemy is a water version of Mario and the graphics and everything are awesome! Princess Peach has a butler who is Toad. Yoshi comes in different colors and he dies in water!
This looks like the best mario in 11 years!!

WOW!!! Thats the word I keep using when I see this game, Its the First fun looking mario in a long time, and although mario64 was a good game , the story was a tad fizzled and the stages were pretty predictable. The story of this mario is about a new water invention and destroying ink creatures. Mario goes on vacation ,but things go sour when these creatures apear. From the looks of it you dont spend a whole lot of time in the mushroom kingdom. Most of the action takes place on a vacation Island. The graphics are amazing , when mario squirts water on the ink creatures they disolve. Mario himself looks quite excellent , his hat is perfectly round , but his hands look kinda blocky. This game will be the latest system seller for Nintendo. It looks incredible and fun. Buy it and Support the true gaming company Nintendo.
Mario Sunshine: Why is this game engineered so badly?

I have never seen a professionally designed and marketed game that was released with so many graphical errors. The camera has difficulty focusing on Mario and changes vantage points seemingly at random. The 3D renderer has so many clipping errors that I would be embarrased to have coded the program. When the viewpoint is rotated, the user gets to see through walls, then the walls flicker, then the camera moves on its own accord, then Mario is on the wrong side of the wall, and all you can see is a shadow. Sometimes the camera view shrinks to a blue "portal" for no apparent reason and then expands back to normal view.
As if the graphical errors were not bad enough, the game has a really inefficient "save" mechanism. Basically, the user cannot save Mario's position right before a difficult challenge. All saving does is record Mario's inventory. If the user botches a challenge, he/she must retake the entire level. This is componded by the fact that the "boss" and "puzzle" challenges take about 15 minutes to get to.
The game has virtually no artificial intelligence. NPC figures basically don't move. They just stand in place and giggle (which of course, makes for a unrealistic, contrived setting, since in real life, people usually don't stand on corners waving all day!) The coders also took the lazy way out by having NPC characters "mutter" and then have the "spoken" words print on the screen. This is lazy because they should have done real spoken voices and coded those instead of the incoherent mumbling we get from this game.
Finally, Mario doesn't have the ability to walk in a straight line. Pushing the game pad forward results in Mario meandering in a weird "S" pattern. This means that on narrow walkways, the user must "tap" Mario forward in tiny increments instead of having him walk normally.
The musical interludes are too simplistic. There is very little variety in the music.
All in all, this game appears to have been rushed to market. It is a game that rides on the coat tails of better engineered Mario products. This game is a disaster of bad design and bad testing. In my humble opinion, anyone who buys this game is paying top dollar for a "beta" product.
