There is a reason why this game is still $40+ dollars, used...

Because of how great it is. I have played every RE game released in North America, and this was next to the best of the series.
I say next to the best due to RE4, which was a phenomenal game, but leaves one asking the question: was it an RE game? Where is the mansion? Where are the zombies? Same with the upcoming RE5, I'm leaning more towards Umbrella Chronicles coming out on the Wii as my next RE purchase.
It is rare to find this game at the game store, when you do it is at least $40. I paid $45 last month when I spotted it on the shelf. That's $45 for a used game, it darn well better be good right? It was... It's still better than most of the mediocre stuff coming out on the XBOX 360 (halo, bioshock).
This series is the reason why Gamecube was so great, every single RE game came out on it, including a couple of early exclusives like RE0 (one of my favorites) and RE4.
If you are debating paying $40+ dollars for this game (as old as it is - and used even) jump off the fence and buy it. If you have a Wii or Cube and love this genre then this is a must have, and possibly a long term collectors item, I mean after all why is it still $40+ dollars and so hard to find, even as good as it is? They must have not made that many?
It's just a port of the old one but still an amazing game.

It may just be a port of the Playstation version, but who gives? It's a must have for RE fans and in my opinion, it is the best of the classic RE games. Corny voice acting and crappy graphics but it's a port from the PS1 so you gotta understand, it's not a remake. This game is decent in every way such as your damage meter, enemy hit points, inventory spaces, to health rejuvination item amounts, ammo, puzzles and boss difficulty and
how frequent enemies appear(on EASY MODE. Don't try playing normal unless you are an expert.). I give the gameplay a 4.6 and the overall a 4.8.

First of all let me say that my introduction into the Resident Evil series was R.E.4 which is considered by many (so far including myself) to be the pinnacle of the series in spite of a few of its quirks. Also playing the Gamecube version of the original Resident Evil afterwards while not overall as good was still a fantastic game as far as giving me a good, girly scream inducing, scare. Sound design, graphics and sometimes unintentionally funny dialogs were what made these games good. Now it is true that starting with the best of the series unfortunately means that I have nowhere to go but down. However I didn't know that R.E.1 and 4 were the best at the time. That being said you can imagine my mix of astonishment and disappointment when I put in R.E.2 expecting an amazing remake like R.E.1 and get a slightly jazzed up PS1 game on the Gamecube. Now one might think that graphics aren't truly essential for a good horror video game experience and to them I'd say your right, to an extent. However the only (very) slightly upgraded graphics of R.E.2 on the Gamecube (arguably having some of the best graphics of the previous gen consoles) is like expecting to get a five star meal at a high class restaurant and receiving a plate of day old hamburger helper. The graphics make the humans and zombies look robotic the scenery look ugly and unfortunately the creepy atmosphere is diminished to the extent of me needing to turn off the lights and have Freddy Kruger standing next to me to feel scared sometimes. The sound design and surprise zombie attacks still are enough to make me jump out of my visually under-stimulated skin every now and then. The voice acting is still as funny as always due to it being so over the top it could jump over Mount Everest while still trying to be serious. As usual the game-play mechanics are slow and clunky and you never have control of the camera which I suppose is meant to aid in the fear that a super zombie could charge you at any time and you're caught unprepared with dwindling health and amo but after a while it is just irritating. You are also limited to the amount of items you can carry like weapons, health items, keys, amo, or even some piece of a puzzle. Right away this is annoying because if you get to a puzzle that requires an item you stored at the last save point then you need to run all the way back, get it and return to solve the puzzle while making the choice between health items and amo. I suppose that these are all elements that are standard for the series but even so they are annoying. The point I'm trying to get to is that this game is average. That being said if your looking for a game to give you a good scare then you could do worse but if a scare is what you really want then ignore R.E.2 and get something like Silent Hill 2. This is an ok game if you're a fan of the series (which I partially am) and if you are then I give a small recommendation. If you're just looking for any game with zombies then you'd get a better experience with Dead Rising, R.E.1 or heck just watch a George Romero film and play with the remote control. Now let it be known that in trying to write a review for a game I look at it not as a fan but as a level-headed person just looking for a game to play depending on interests so here is a preemptive "I don't care" to all the obsessive fan-boys (or fan-girls) and I will not be changing the score. It got an average score and it should be happy with that.

I had this for PS1 back in the day. But my PS1 finally died a year or two ago. I do have a PS2, but my copy of Resident Evil 2 had scratched to the point that the PS2 couldn't read it. But, I just happen to have a Gamecube because of Resident Evil 4, so this is great! I also bought the Resident Evil Nemesis for Gamecube for the same reason. They are both really good, and haven't lost anything in the transfer from PS1 to Gamecube. But I wouldn't recommend Resident Evil 0 or 1 for Gamecube. I didn't like those. Get Resident Evil 1 Director's Cut for Playstation, that one is better.
