bought this game Aug 2006 which is several years after its release and it still can compete with current games. very fun, especially for a star wars fan. not the sharpest graphics and transistions but its excusable. jewel case doesnt come with manual, just 2 discs. lightsaber and force play well done.

Can't say I'm too impressed. The new sabers are a nice addition, all be it available a bit late in the game. The new moves are nothing but eye candy, as is the character creation. The light/dark choice was a complete let down, after playing DF2:JK. The mission tier system, while a good concept is seriously flawed. Some of the force powers from JO multiplayer are a nice addition to SP. The multiplayer side could be good, if not for the community. It's basically dumbed-down JO. I'm not too keen on the force restriction on special moves, ahh no more rage-speed-DFA destroying. Nobody seems to fight, instead everyone stands around & chats, & punish people with their user made mods, should you try. EX; server admin can kill you, put you to 'sleep', & other ridiculous things through 'admin-mods' which are basically server side cheats, for as much as lighting your saber. Not exactly the games fault, but the communities. Just letting those who play games for the MP competitive scene know that they may want to skip this title, as I should have.

Star Wars Jedi Academy is a lot of fun. I found myself unable to turn off my computer until I finished playing it. I completed Jedi Academy in a little over a week, playing about 2 hours per day on the average. I highly recommend this game to anyone who likes Star Wars. There is nothing like wielding a lightsaber and fighting dark jedi. I found that I rarely used the first person mode with a gun/blaster. The lightsaber was too much fun!!

Great for any star wars fan

This is a great follow -up to Jedi Outcast. This is almost the exact same game since it has some of the same weapons, music and characters only this one had much better graphics. Any fan of star wars will probably love this game. You can play this game in either first-person or third-person mode. I always like to play games that are in third-person mode but I still remember first-person mode from dark forces.

Plot: You play a student named Jaden Korr, who comes to the jedi academy to learn to be a jedi. You learn how to use a lightsaber and how to use the force. At first, you go on a few missions, some with Kyle Katarn from Jedi Outcast. But mainly you help Luke, Kyle and other students to try to stop a dark jedi, Tavion, from siphoning force power from many different locations to ressurect Marka Ragnos[a dead sith lord].

Weapons: Here is a list of the weapons: lightsaber, blaster pistol, E-11 blaster rifle, disputer rifle, wookie bowcaster, imperial heavy repeater, magnetic gun, golan arms flachette weapon, stouker concussion rifle, merr-sonn portable missle system and other throwable weapons. These weapons do come in handy but it's best to use a lightsaber. There's not much I can tell you about the weapons except that most of them you have probably seen in Jedi outcast.

I was surprised to see that this game was much easier than the Jedi Outcast but I still think this is a cool game. If you're a star wars fan, buy this game TODAY!

Even better than Jedi Outcast

I was surprised when I found that I liked Jedi Knight II more than the original Dark Forces: Jedi Knight, and Jedi Academy is even better. The ability to customize your character's appearance gives your character a personal touch, and being able to choose which Force powers you want, and ultimately, which side of the Force to follow, is something that was good in the original Jedi Knight but lacking in Jedi Knight II. I also liked the decision to go with several smaller missions as opposed to a few long ones -- this keeps the game fresh, and much less monotonous; if you find yourself on a level you don't like, at least you know it won't last TOO terribly long.

The lightsaber combat is also improved, and feels much more fluid.

If there's one complaint I have with the game is that you can no longer wield the lightsaber in first-person mode. I'm guessing this decision was made to accomodate all of the new combat moves in the game, but personally, given the choice between having these moves and playing completely in first-person mode, I'd choose first-person: I think the designers should've given the player the choice.

But despite that, this is really a great game. Well done Raven Software!

Not bad for the money

Okay, just to put this in perspective: Compared to KotOR, this is a mediocre game, however, on it's own it's not bad at all, though entirely too short for my tastes (I completed it in about 14 hours in padawan difficulty). The game has 4 difficulty settings: Padawan, Jedi, Jedi Knight and Jedi Master.

The previous reviewer mention he had system crashes. I have experienced nothing but perfectly flawless game play, even while multitasking, so I can't agree there.

Good:
Smooth game play
multiple missions on various environments
Various puzzles that you must solve
"NPC's" in certain missions that assist you in combat
(somewhat) Customizable characters
At higher levels, you get to choose between a lightsaber, paired lighsabers, or a double-bladed lighsaber
You get to choose your light/dark force powers (each has 3 levels that you can increase) and neutral force powers increase as you complete each mission
You can select particular weapons before each mission
You can customize the keyboard controls
How much damage you do depends on how accurate you strike and whether your opponent is in position to block or not (some fights I got killed over and over, but a lucky strike just when the bad guy's defenses are off line, killed him in one stroke, so luck/skill *IS* a factor in the game!)
You CAN accidently (or intentionally) kill your allies
A decent variety of weapons and force powers to choose from

Bad:
The default controls are less than intuitive (so you're going to want to customize them)
The NPC's are NOT interactive (you can't talk to them and they tend to get in the way fo a fight as often as they help in one)
You can't throw a double-bladed lightsaber in combat like you can with a normal one
The game is WAY WAY WAY too short! (this is by biggest complaint!)
There is ONLY one situation which tempts you to the dark side or affirms your devotion to the good side

All in all, not bad for $20 and I plan on buying Jedi Outcast next

Incredibly exciting

It was just recently, that I found the way of the force. It has been a couple of years since the original release date and yet it feels exciting to REALLY the game. I have just passed the second stage of training and chose to mix the way of Jedi with the dark side and it's exciting of what the final outcome would be. Many interesting points include lightsaber combat, force usage, speeder controlling, bullet blasting and much more. If you're looking for star wars related entertainment, the Jedi Academy worths spending for.

Lightsabers, the force, the abilty to choose good or evil, what more could a jedi ask for?

Jedi Academy is one of the best games I have ever played.
In Jedi Academy, you first customize your character by choosing which species it is. You can only choose your gender if you're human. And you can't choose the name of your character. It's always Jaden. But that doesn't matter. You also get to choose your lightsaber color, you have a nice variety too. Your options are blue, green, purple, orange, and yellow. I'm a little disappointed that you can't choose red, but that's okay.
And eventually, you have the option of choosing a different saber style, or sticking with the one you've got. The new saber styles are double-bladed lightsaber, [the kind Darth Maul used.] or the dual lightsabers [one in each hand].
At the beginning of the game, you will be fighting weak enemies such as mercenaries and weak stormtroopers. But as you progress you will constantly be fighting dark jedi and stormtroopers in incredibly tough armor and laser cannons and they can wade through lava. And then, of course, there's a few boss battles sprinkled here and there.
And then of course there's the force itself. Each force power has three rankings. For instance, level one force grab [the kind Vader used] allows you to hold the victim there helplessly. But I don't even think it even damages your opponent. All right, so level one grab is weak and pathetic. Well, don't worry, it gets better later on.
Level two force grab actually hurts your opponent. Finally, you can kill your enemies with force grab! But it gets even better.
Level three grab is every dark Jedi's dream come true. You can simply choke them to death, or you can throw them off ledges, slam them into walls, ceilings, or floors. There are, of course, many other force powers, but if you're planning on being evil, I recommend getting level three lightning and level three grab as soon as possible.
And now back to the lightsaber styles. Now those new styles look a lot better then the regular style don't they? And in some ways they are, but in other ways they're worse. You see, the new styles are stronger then the single saber, but only the single saber can use all three of the fighting stances. You see, there are three other fighting stances, fast, strong, and medium. Fast is weak, but its speed makes up for that. When you attack, it usually doesn't leave you open to attack and you can chain together quick attacks with this stance.
Medium stance is nothing special, it's just medium.
And finally, Strong stance. Imagine someone swinging a sledgehammer in slow motion, and you've got your basic Strong stance attack.
The point is, if you're a fan of Star Wars, lightsaber combat, or using the force, or if you're just a casual gamer looking for a good game, this game is for you.

What happened?!!!?

This game was my introduction to Jedi Knight series. The only Star Wars game I had played before this was Knights of the Old Republic (which I loved). After finishing it I was excited about more Star Wars gaming and I tried Jedi Academy.

The game seemed to be a mixed bag: there was some great things like ability to customize your character and choosing between saber styles. The acrobatics were fantastic. But these alone were not enough to save the game: some of the graphics looked really bad especially outdoor environments. In general everything felt like it was made in great hurry: the textures, lightning and everything felt unpolished. Quake III engine is capable of much better when levels are planned with artistic vision. Character animations in cutscenes looked clumsy and unfinished. But the biggest problem with the game was the story (or the lack of it). Overall the game feels like you had different fan made maps put together.

I know a lot of people probably wanted more lightsaber combat. Well you certainly got that with this game. The problem is that it gets VERY repetitive after a while. In movies the saber fights were used sparingly and always connected to major turning points in the plot. Now it is just endless repetition (didn't I beat this guy already? Like 100 times!!!)

I recently tried Jedi Outcast (the previous game in the serie) and I was SHOCKED to realize just how much better it was in almost every way: the graphics, the plot, the missions all had real touch of quality in it. It seems Raven tried to improve some elements in the game and totally forgot everything that made Jedi Outcast such a classic. Or more likely this product just had to be finished with a real tight deadline. That just how it feels like: an unfinished product which COULD have been great if they had maintained the quality of previous game. I truly recommend Knights of the Old Republic and Jedi Outcast over this.

Multiplayer not Sigleplayer game

To give a little background, I've loved everygame LucasArts has put out in the star wars galaxy except for possibly Force Commander. However, in most respects Jedi Academy was a HUGE letdown after Jedi Outcast and its amazing replayability.

First, the graphics in JA are much worse than JO, the game is more intensive on your computer, the missions except in a few notable exceptions are more vinnettes than missions, there is a very weak storyline that relies completely upon JO to have it even make sense, and except for the expanded force powers is a complete letdown. None of the missions is exceptionally challenging although a couple are frustrating in the fact you can't kill your nemesis until you complete certain steps (Boba Fett and the mutant Rancor) until you've done some x, y, and z that the game designers really fail to let you know about.

However, JA does have ONE redeeming quality. If you are a multiplayer, AND like lightsabre duels then this game is a must have. There are expanded moves, 5 fighting styles if you include dual sabre and staff sabre, and the hokey instant kill moves that relied more on luck or used for newbie bashing are taken away be weakening them significantly (the rearward stab after knocking ppl down).

In reality though, unless your a die-hard multiplayer jedi fan this game will just waste your time and money. Wait for the jewel case, or better yet stick to Jedi Outcast.
