Okay, first off to Shadow "Chaos Control", the dumbass who gave this game one star because he "can't solve the chapter 7 puzzle". You're an idiot! There are lots of walkthroughs on the Internet that can help you. Sheesh, some people are dumb!
Anyway, now that I'm done ranting, let me just say that I recently beat the game, and enjoyed every minute of it!
Gameplay:10/10: Just like the original, it's an RPG. And if you thought the battles were wacky in the first, well, look at this! Now the battle arena has an audience who can help you, or hate you. And there's a "BINGO" slot in the battles, too!
Lots of secrets. Including the super hard "Pit of 100 Trials" the boss at the 100th floor is HARD! Plus, the game even has a hidden character!
The dialogue is amusing. And it has lots of dialogue, too!
Sometimes, you will play as Bowser in a Super Mario Bros. like world. And just like in the first, control Peach, too!
Mario will also get "curses" that turns him into an airplane, flat, tube, and even a boat!
Graphics:10/10: The beautiful paper-esque graphics of the first are even more clearer and more colorful than before! Plus, more paper effects.
Music: 10/10: Pretty nice music; gives you the Mario feeling.
Sound:9/10: I depleted 1 point because there are no voices, except Mario's "yah" noises. But the game sounds great!
Story:10/10: FINALY! A GOOD MARIO STORY FOR ONCE! It doesn't involve Bowser kidnapping Peach! Anyway, Mario gets a letter from Peach that has a map in it. It's susposed to lead to treasure. So Mario goes to Rogueport where Peach is susposed to be at. But she's missing. The map leads to "The Thousand Year Door", a door that is susposed to contain a valuble treasure. But to unlock it, Mario needs to collect 7 "Crystal Stars" to open the door.
The story does not sound like much, but it is filled with lots of plot twists, plus Bowser isn't the main villian [although you will fight him twice in the game].
Overall, this game is perfect! If you have a GameCube then you must check it out!
Mario writes another "A" paper

What can I say. This truly is a game for both RPG enthusiasts and those who never really got into the whole RPG scene. If you played the first Paper Mario and enjoyed it, and haven't checked out this one yet, it will surpass your wildest dreams. No, but seriously, this game is very fun. It keeps all the same aspects we loved in the first paper mario and gives the game all kinds of new twists. Here is a short list of what i felt they improved on from the first one:
-great new characters
-i give the music in this game two thumbs up, very enjoyable
-all kinds of cool new attacks
-some excellent environments
-fighting on a stage with an interactive crowd
-i liked the story in this game better
-excellent graphics
-you fight in a tournament, what else is there to say
-mario uses his "paperness" to his advantage in this game, ex:
1. turn sideways to walk thru cracks/fall thru grates
2. turn into a paper airplane
3. turn into a paper boat
4. roll up and roll around
I could go on a while about all the great aspects of this game. It is truly a masterpiece. The sad thing is, a game like paper mario will never be as popular as the Final Fanstasies, etc. (needless to say those are amazing games). But paper mario will always be a sort of cult classic among avid mario fans.
So, if you like RPG's, play it. If you dont like RPG's, play it, you'll be surprised. If you like video games, you better believe you should play it. If you like monkeys, throw poo. If you're reading my review, get a life. Just kidding, seriously, this is a very fun game and I highly recommend you give it a try. NOW GO! Open that thousand year door.....
Maybe the best Mario game I've played. I replayed it too much

This is an RPG that just blasts its way into town. You should cry for missing this one.
The story is that Mario receives a map from princess Peach. The map is supposed to lead to a treasure. When Mario arrives at Rogueport, he finds that Peach is missing.
As the story progresses, early on you find out that a group called the X-nauts captured Peach. They are looking for the same thing.
Your main objective is to collect the crystal stars from different areas. Each one you collect gives you a special power and the location to the next star. Your goal of the game is to open a door called "The thousand year door". You and other characters only guess what is behind the door until you find out during the last two chapters. It is really good!
I'll explain battle here. It is very complex, so pay attention!
Before you enter a battle, you have the option to hit the opponent first, get hit, or come off neutral. First strikes do help since you never know what you are running into. A good thing about Mario RPGs is that you can see one enemy you have to touch to get into battle instead of walking around and going into battle at completely random and close times. So you have the option to avoid them or enter as you wish. But be wary the opponents can catch you by ramming you or other methods.
Once in battle, you will notice you are on a stage with an audience. They play a good part. If you pull off combos and please them, they give you star energy which is used to perform special crystal star attacks. If you upset the audience, they will leave in small groups. Remember, more audience means more star energy. The audience also has the ability to help or hinder you. They can throw health regain items (mushrooms) or hurt you with hammers or pop cans. Some members even jump on the stage!
The star energy meter is important. Each crystal star gives you a special attack that requires a specific amount of energy. The crystal stars are awesomely powerful. The attacks range from stopping time to actually dealing a massive amount of hurt to all opponents.
When it comes to actual fighting, this is why Mario is famous in the RPG world. Unlike other RPGs, you have to perform button commands to make sure you do the attack correctly or magnify it. When an opponent attacks, you can defend if you hit A at the right time and take one point less damage or if you hit B at the right time you can avoid the attack and deal one point of damage to the attacker.
Aside from pleasing the audience, combos allow you to play slots. Performing moves correctly will fill in one square and the second square the next combo. If the two match, you will have to stop the spinning third square to get something special. Here are the possibilities.
1. Three mushrooms: Max health
2. Three flowers: Max flower points
3. Three sun sprits: Max health, Max FP, and full audience.
4. Three poison mushrooms: Health and FP cut in half, entire audience leaves.
One good thing in battle is the simple attack and defense points. Since they deal with small numbers, you can be much wiser on what to do. For instance, if you use an attack on an opponent with a defense of 2 and the attack strikes twice with the power of 3, you know you did 2 points of damage.
There are minor changes I have noticed in this game comparing it to the first paper Mario. Your partners are no longer immortal and that is good since you no longer have to face the annoyance of your partner getting knocked out for two turns.
Everyone (Including opponents!) can use items in this game. In Paper Mario 1, only Mario could use items. One last thing is that your opponents can wear badges too.
Badges give Mario and his partner special abilities. They can do things such as give you an attack, boost your health, allow you to touch spikes and so on. You have to use a certain amount of badge power to put on each badge, so choose your combination wisely. Be aware your opponents can wear badges too.
You level up once you collect 100 star points. I enjoy this since when you are going to level up is no longer a mystery like in other RPGs. You can choose from three upgrades: you can extend your health by 5 points, extend your flower points by 5 points (FP allows you to do more advanced attacks), and you can extend your badge points by three which allow you to wear more badges.
Outside of battle is basic puzzle solving. Most of it involves use of your partner. You can only have one partner out either in or out of battle. You can switch anywhere. Each partner has a special in and out of battle. Take Bomberty and Miss Mowz for instance. Outside of battle, Bomberty can blow up walls and such while Mowz can find hidden objects. In battle, Bomberty can blow away fog and Mowz can pierce through enemy defense.
The storytelling in this game is great. Most chapters introduce you to a new partner that has a problem you solve and they end up wanting to join you to find peach. The weird thing is I wish is that the partners got more involved in the story and talked more to Mario and each other. The most annoying thing is when they do say something. Since each one speaks in a certain personality, unless you turn the game off and go back to that point, you will not know what the other partners would have said in place.
Your partners have a special way to level up. You have to collect three sun sprites and a magician will "upgrade" them. This will give them a new attack and add one point to their overall power. This is great. In other RPGs where partners collect points from fighting, it is very easy to pick favorites and have just one partner worth using. The sun sprites allow you to pick favorites without consequences.
Aside from collecting badges and crystal stars, you can collect pieces of star. If you find a certain person and trade them a certain number of star pieces, you can get a find-there-only badge. Only a few of them of worth putting on.
Putting more emphasis on paper, Mario can learn to do tricks. As the game moves on, you learn how to turn into a plane and turn sideways to slip through cracks.
The graphics are grade A. Everything is made in the style of paper cutouts or origami. Special events happen in strange ways. Sometimes part of the screen will rip off to reveal something or unfold to reveal a staircase. The framerate is what makes this game good looking. I have only seen two cases where the game slowed down and became choppy. That was when I performed a certain crystal star attack and another was when I was fighting hundreds of enemies at once.
The music either sinks or swims. Outside of battle the music is rarely good and it is basically for the kiddies. When it comes to certain boss fights or certain areas in the game, it becomes really seriously and actually caused me to tense up. I remember fighting the pirate boss and I tensed up since the music was crazy. They all fit the situation.
The boss fights themselves rock. I only had one boss that I did not like. Each boss is reminds why this game is so great. Each boss can do something really special. The first one, for instance, will talk to you and hope you will fall for her tricks so she can bite you. Another boss will suck up some of the audience with a machine and shoot them at you. You just wonder what is going to happen next.
This game is with its flaws. The game is very similar to the first Paper Mario. For instance, like the first Paper Mario, your first chapter is in a castle. But the game differs enough. Another flaw is the puzzles can be boring.
With memorable boss fights and countless side missions, I think I may take back what I said about Mario Bros. 3 and hail this my favorite Mario game of all time. It is so good; there is actual replay value. And that is rare in an RPG. Don't call this a kiddy game and miss it up.
Update June 20 2005: This game is too good to pass up. I have just now played and beaten it over 3 times. Here are my times
1st Play: 31 hours and 3 minutes
2nd Play: 39 hours and 11 minutes
3rd Play: 25 hours and 59 minutes
I just love this game to death.

As a gamer unfamiliar with the original Paper Mario, I was impressed with how fun and fresh this game is as an RPG. My friends and I were virtually addicted to it and played on a nightly level. Not to say that this is THE perfect game, running at around 35 - 40 hours, it's relatively short for an RPG, but the leveling and gameplay make it great for anyone who enjoys the Mario Bros. characters.
Despite being cute and addictive, the 2-D style gameplay is especially fitting for me, since 3-D games with a varying horizon give me motion-sickness (such as Super Mario Sunshine, Sly Cooper, Zelda Majora's Mask and Zelda: Ocarina of Time). Instead of pouring all of their development time into making over-the-top scenery and soap-opera melodrama, they created a game that takes the flavor of old school turn-based RPG's and made it flow smoothly then added a plot with plenty of interesting twists.

I like this game. It was fun. A very fun game indeed. If you like RPG games, then you will love this game. It is harder than the N64 version, but it is more fun. It is longer also. Hers some information on the game:
Plot: Here is a letter that Princess Peach mails to Mario. It is from the instruction booklet.
Hello there, Mario! I am now on holiday, traveling in th Mushroom Kingdom. In my travels, I came into possesion of a mystical map...a treasure map, actually. It was inside a box I got from an old merchant in a town called Rogueport. But since it would be too dificult for me to try to go find treasure all by myself...I thought you could help me hunt for it! You will, of, course, won't you? I've included the map with this letter, so please bring it with you when you come. (That means you must come!) -Peach-
I must ask you if you like the plot or not. Did you? Well it really does not matter.
As in the letter, the map is very VERY important. When, Mario comes to Rogueport at first, he sees a Goomba named Goombella. An army of X-nauts (new characters) and Lord Crump leading them go after her because they think she has the map. She forms a party with Mario and they go to the archaeology college teacher, Professor Frankly. He temperarly joins them in search for the thousand year door. When Mario finds the door, he stands on this weird column. Then, a mysterious light goes on the map. It shows a secret location of a star. Mario and his party gets the first star and stands on the column. Then, the next location of of a star apears. You keep doing that until you get seven stars. Then, the thousand year door opens. And that is what the game is most about.
Here are the names of the places (the chapters' real names are different):
Prologue: Rogueport Sewers
Chapter 1: Hooktail Castle
Chapter 2: The Great Tree
Chapter 3: Glitzville
Chapter 4: Creepy Steeple
Chapter 5: Pirate's Grotto
Chapter 6: Poshley Sanctum
Chapter 7: X-Naut Fortress
Chapter 8: Palace of Shadow
Unlike the first paper mario, after you defeat the last boss and there are still tasks uncompleated, you can return back to Rogueport to complete.
The Boss 411:
The bosses in Paper Mario the thousand year door are so much harder than the classic N64 Paper Mario. If you have played Paper Mario, maded it to the battle with Bowser, and used tattle on him, it should have said "99". The last bost in Paper Mario the thousand year door is "150". Her attacks also are higher than Bowser. her defense (luckily) is only "1" whick makes her slightly harder to defeat than Bowser.
The Character Info: As always, Paper Mario creates more new characters by the developers than any other video game in the world. Here are just some new characters.
Grodus, Lord Crump, Jolene, Rawk Hawk, Elder, Don Pianta, Pennington, and much much more new characters. There are ones from the the last Paper Mario that can or pretend to help you. Like Mervulee, Rip Cheato, and Merlon.
Tasks: There are lots and lots of tasks in this game. Food recipes, Trouble Center, and Pit of 100 Trials. All of them, you will need help with. So here is a websight that will help: http://www.gamefaq.com.
Well, that's about all I have to tell you. Enjoy your game!
Easy? Kind of. Fun? yes. Long? About 30-60 some hours. For kids? If they aren't in grade 3.

This game is FUN. I've beaten it 3 times, and if I would play again, I would still love it.I'm over the age of 13 (barely), and it's not to kiddy for me. And, man, it's pretty hard! Seriously, everyone's saying that younger gamers would love it, because it's not to difficult. If they mean above the age of 10, then yes. If not, they're nuts. It's really fun, unfolding the story, until you finally reach the end. And, man, it's a long game. On my first try, it took me about 60 hours. On my second, it took about 50, and on my third, it took around 30. And some of the bosses are hard. Most are pretty easy, though. And Cortez, a huge, four-armed-possesed-skeleton-pirate-ghost, is just about the coolest guy ever. But seriously, how could a 5 year old beat this game? Mabye, if they've got near-advanced or advanced skills, mabye they'll get to the last boss. Or, if They're really good, beat it. But really, I can't imagine a kindergartener beating the last boss-the shadow queen. It's a demon's spirit-a huge, purple, woman figure with a crown- that posseses peach. Man, that thing's bad. The gameplay is excellent. A turn based game is what it is, but you have to successfuly press a button or do a certain action to do any real damage. The game is pretty hard. The only hard bosses are Grodus, and right after, bowser and kammy, cortez CAN be hard, Macho grubba may be a problem, the shadow queen is a pest if you don't know what to do, and Bonetail, the optional, huge, skeletal, powerful, demon's pet dragon is the hardest boss in the game. I also like the cutscenes. They're pretty funny. So, I'd recommend this game to anyone who can read, who can figure out a strategy fast, doesn't get frustrated, has a puzzle solving mind (or not), and isn't under the grade of 3. I just don't get it. This game is for all gamers. It's hard for everyone.

I have over 50+ games and this is totally my favorite. I got this game for christmas from my cousin who got my addicted to video games. It took me about a year of almost non-stop playing, and I am totally pro at games. The story is beautiful and the ending is over the top. I thought this game had THE best story line and ending in the history of all games. You really feel for the characters and the people you meet in the game. The only problem I had with the game is the fact that once you beat the game, there's really nothing you can do afterwards. (Unless you didn't defeat the Pit of 100 Trial or help all the request in the Trouble Building) This is the game that got me addicted to RPGs and I think it really does live up to its successful title. (p.s. for all the people who thougt it was boring: you must not be Mario fans!)

I loved playing Paper Mario 1 for the N64, but when I played The Thousand Year Door for the Gamecube, boy was I impressed! There is alot of adventure in this game and plenty to do. It has a wonderful story line that you can understand, and fun battles to fight. Its actually even funny. This game is very fun and exciting, but the developers could of done a whole lot of a better job on the ending. It has an INCREDEBLY HARD boss battle and after you've beat that long, hard, boss, you get to see a stupid ending. The only thing thats wrong with The Thousand Year door is that it just didnt give that one great ending that everyone expected.
Better than the original

The Paper Mario games are by far the highlights of the series. This game lives up to that reputation in an incredible, funny, and story rich adventure. The game opens up in typical Mario fashion in which Peach comes across a magical treasure map, a map that can lead to a treasure rumored to be under the ruins of an ancient civilization that lay beneath a town named Rougeport. She sends the map to Mario and he goes to Rougeport in hopes of helping her find the treasure. She has gone missing and a criminal organization called the X-Nauts appears and they seem to have big plans that involve gaining control of the map and the treasure. They have begun to seize control of parts of the lands, trapping the inhabitants, and searching for artifacts known as Crystal Stars so they can gain control of their power and use it to unlock the Thousand Year door and uncover the Treasure. But what are the treasure and the Crystal Stars? That opens up into a huge story that players will gradually learn as the game progresses.
The leader of this organization is Grodus who makes an excellent new villain; it's a nice break from Bowser. Without giving the story away, I will say that it along with the game itself is much more darker and involved than the first game. Though the game itself is not dark, it is in comparison to some of the other games much more darker. The game starts up with a seemingly simple plot that turns into a very complex and satisfying story. There are also many subplots in each episode of the game, which are great on their own and also tie into the main story in some way.
The characters, especially Mario's partners, are much more alive and interactive. Every character has unique personality that comes to life through the dialogue. Each character's dialogue has such a unique feel to it that you'll fell as if they are really talking. Even Mario is more alive, though he has no actual lines of dialogue; he makes faces and noises that speak for themselves. Now the graphics are incredible and very satisfying to look at, they're enough motivation to play the game just to see what new sights are comprised in the game. The best thing is that each chapter explores a region that is completely different than the previous one, and has it's own theme and story. This gives the game new and original experiences in every chapter.
And what would be a Mario game without Bowser? Though not the main villain he still serves as a villain and he is playable in intervening parts in which Mario completes a portion of his quest. The cut scenes with Bowser are hilarious and contain alot of in jokes that even adults will laugh at. Peach will also be playable as you control her in the X-Naut fortress, the organization that kidnapped her, and here you will learn alot of Grodus's plans and the overall storyline.
The battles system in fun and easy to learn. There is always something fun to do on screen and something good to look at. Now for those who believe that every game has faults. Here are some possible faults. There is alot of dialogue. This game has a very complex story and that requires lots of dialogue, but it's so interesting you might not notice it. Some scenes however, especially the first few, can be very long and tedious for those who just want to jump in and get into it. But, I will say that it is worth waiting through the scenes as the action after that is just plain fun. Saving can be a hazard as the only way to save is to find save blocks and use them to save. They are times where you're engrossed in the game you forget to puncha save block. Then you face an enemy who is difficult to beat and then beats you, you go back to the title screen and have to start from the last save block. That is VERY annoying so remember to save no matter what.
Well, Paper Mario; The Thousand Year Door is an incredible game. It has great graphics and settings, interactive and funny characters, a complex and involved storyline, humorous cuteness, and of course tons of Mario elements and humor. Still reading well stop, get in the car, and get this game.

Even though I haven't completed this game yet, this is the best game for all ages, Mario fans or not. It takes your gameplaying experience to a total new dimension that has not been seen yet. Yep, since this is "Paper Mario", that means you are in the PAPER DIMENSION. What really made me interested into this totally new concept is that how characters can maneuver around the levels and landscapes, which is totally made out of paper. It is a cross between 2D and 3D. That's what was interesting about this game in the whole start. It is sometimes easy, and sometimes hard, but mostly hard, so it is a good idea to get the whole handbook with the game (found in Gamestop, or other used game stores near you). You may love the violence in the game. Great cartoon effects, and great moves by Mario; In this game he can do moves that he couldn't do normally in the regular games. If you get the chance, find the fire hammer; it will save you someday in the game. The characters that travels with you, especially Yoshi. You can't get over Yoshi, by the way! He maybe young & small, but this yoshi has quite an attitude. Easily one of the best RPG characters of the whole game. Don't mind reading this review anymore. The game will tell you how good it is better than I can, so buy the game as soon as possible before they are all gone!
