Disapointed....Tough to control

I was extremely excited when I heard about this game several months back, and then I bought it, only to find out that the controls were impossibly hard to use (they changed the buttons on which button jumps and which button fires, which makes it nearly impossible to play and therefore made this game absolutely useless. It's a shame too because at least Mega Man 1 and Two (the two I really played a ton as a kid at my friends house) were a blast to play. I cannot say much about the others other than the Genesis game was very weak on here, and the controls were tough on some of the others I played. Unfortunately I was robbed a few months back and this was taken. But I would avoid this game. You probably won't realize how bad the controls are until you try to play it (especially that tree man level in Mega Man 2). It's a shame. THe game also was dated slightly, which is understandable. It gets the 2 stars because at least for a brief moment I was reminded of my youth.
A great compilation of great Mega Man games

The Mega Man Anniversary Collection is a truly spectacular item. It is rare these days to find games that are as challenging or fun as any of the classic Mega Man games, and this disc has them all, from the NES Mega Man 1 to two arcade Mega Man games. If you missed out on the Mega Man games in the past, or are a seasoned Mega Man veteran but want to relive your past experiences with the classic franchise, then the Mega Man Anniversary Collection is for you.
The graphics in the game are certainly not up to par with recent releases, and this is very understandable and should not be held against the game. Most of the games on the disc were released on the NES, so the graphics have that great simplistic 8-bit design. However, the games are still playable, even if they are not top of the line. Mega Man 7 and 8 were released on the SNES and PS1 respectively, so they look remarkably better than their NES counterparts. In fact, Mega Man 8 still has some very nice hand-drawn graphics. The two arcade games on the disc, the Power Battles and Power Fighters, also have better visuals than the NES titles. Overall, the graphics are certainly not anything noteworthy by today's standards, but they remain true to what the games are: classic platformers from years ago.
The sound is also solid for games so old. The Mega Man series has always been known for its memorable themes, and they are perfectly reproduced in this collection. Though simplistic, the music on the 8-bit games are quite catchy and well-composed. Mega Man 7 and 8 have better music, but I don't find it nearly as memorable as the songs in the older games. One major disappointment with this disc is Capcom's decision not to include in-game remixes in the Gamecube version. There are some remixes that you can access in the Secrets menu, and they are quite good, however.
Where this collection truly shines is the gameplay. Mega Man games have always been about delivering solid gameplay. The formula of Mega Man has always been the same: make your way through a side-scrolling stage full of enemies and traps until you reach the Robot Master at the end, defeat the boss, and acquire his weapon which is powerful against another one of the Robot Masters. The weapons act almost like a more complex game of paper-rock-scissors, and they are the trademarks of the series.Mega Man 1-3, arguably the best games in the series, are both very fun and very challenging, and are a total blast to play. The bosses and platforming stages are all implemented in brilliant fashion. Mega Man 1-6 are a bit disappointing, since they are much easier than the older games, but they are still very solid games. Mega Man 7 returns to the hard difficulty of the older games, but it is simply not as much fun to play. Mega Man 8 is one of my personal favorites, not because the graphics are great, but because it is a lot of fun to play. The voice acting, however, is terrible.
The game has quite a few unlockables and bonus features. There is an episode of a G4 show on the disc about the history of Mega Man, and it is quite interesting to watch. There are also various art galleries to unlock, the two arcade titles, and several remixed music tracks.
The disc is not without its faults, however. For some reason, there is a mildly annoying black bar that runs down the side of the screen while playing the game. It is only a slight bother, though, and doesn't detract from gameplay. Many people complain about how the B button is jump and the A button fire, but I find that this control scheme is easy to adapt to. The cutscene video in Mega Man 8 is also really sorry quality, but this is pretty normal for a Gamecube game. But, these flaws don't detract from a very enjoyable experience.
All in all, if you love classic gaming and somehow missed out on Mega Man, don't hesitate to pick up this collection. It is a game that has far more value than many of the recently released titles, and it will provide you with hours and hours of fun.
Bad Controls... It's true and terrible

It's true about the reversal of controls. Capcom has switched the A and B buttons functions, and I am absolutely appauled that such a terrible mistake on such an important game has been made. I am a huge Mega Man fan and I had the highest hopes for the Mega Man Anniversary Collection, but words cannot express my disappointment.
I didn't even want to touch the game after I discovered this control reversal. I was so frustrated by it that I wanted to throw the game in the trash. Mega Man games are hard enough as it is without having to relearn the button functions. Does Capcom not test their games? They could have at least included an option to change the controls back to their original functions, but no. I can't believe how Capcom has decided to butcher 15 years of Mega Man games by this awful control scheme. This is one of the biggest blunders in video game history.
This button reversal is utterly ridiculous. I have already returned my copy and suffered the loss of getting trade-in price because the store wouldn't fully refund it opened. I simply could not stand owning it.
This poorly constructed game is such a huge letdown for me and Mega Man fans everywhere. I sincerely hope that Capcom *MAJORLY* gets it act together so it doesn't release any more, ultra-disappointing, sloppily produced games.
At long last...

I can honestly say that I've dreamed about this day- the day when Capcom finally does right by Megaman and rereleases all of the Blue Bombers adventures for a next-generation console. I have waited nearly ten years, and in but a few short days, my dreams and wishes will come to be. On June 22, 2004, I will own every Megaman game in existence- and then, I can die a happy man. Thank you, Capcom! Thank you! Oh, and all the rest of you- BUY THIS GAME! IT WILL CHANGE YOU!

This game includes Megaman 1-8. I haven't played this edition of the game. However, I have played megaman 1-5 before. These games are pure brilliance. All it is, is jumping and shooting, but that's a good thing. You battle your way through a series of levels, and eventually come to a boss at the end of each one. Each boss has his own battle tactics. If you defeat the boss, you get his weapon. You can use these weapons throughout the game, and eventually defeat the final boss. There's just something about these games that make them fun.
At last......

Overall, this is an excellent release. I've cherished my original Megaman 1-5 NES carts like some people do rare baseball cards, and was naturally thrilled to pick up a gamecube version of all of those, plus a few more. Expecting Capcom to stay as close to the original releases as possible, I fired up Bomb Man's stage, and promptly discovered the most glaring error of all with this release. The jump and fire buttons have been reversed! In the old 8-bit glory days, everyone and their dog knew that A made you jump, and B made you shoot. Thank you, Capcom, for totally forgetting that. A is now fire, Y triple fire, X slide (in the later games), and B jump. If you cut your teeth and nursed your addiction with the classic 8-bit games, this takes considerable getting used to. Otherwise, the control is reproduced precisely. Megaman handles like a pig on ice in the original, as expected, and gains better control in each succeding release. The only other major errors I see are the lack of difficulty selection in Megaman 2, and the omission of the super-jump trick in MM3. Gone is the choice between normal and difficult, and instead you find yourself locked in difficult mode for MM2. By no means is this an insurmountable obsticle, but again it lacks the expected purity of the release. The same applies to MM3, although for the classic cheaters out there, it will make a run through MM3 a whole new experience. There may be others; I've only had the game for one night so far.
While I'm glad I bought this, and will continue playing, some of these bugs and glitches could be seriously off-putting.
Mega Fun (sorry for the Mega Pun)

Since I first saw a clip of the preview of this game, I was excited about its eventual release. I find myself not disappointed by the contents.
First, because there's so few, the weaknesses of the game.
1 - The only true weakness I can think of is the lack of truly enjoyable secrets to unlock. Sure, the two bonus games are enjoyable, but otherwise the secrets are mainly music tracks and the like.
Now, to address the control issue so many people have mentioned, perhaps I'm the only one to notice this "error" is no real error at all. The original NES controller had the "A" button on the left and the "B" button on the right. "A" was jump, "B" was shoot in the Mega Man games.
The GameCube controller has "B" on the left and "A" on the right, so while the "B" is now the jump and "A" shoot, the POSITION of jump and shoot is the same. I think anyone staring at the controller to figure out which is jump and shoot is probably having difficulty with the game because they're looking at the controller, not the screen.
Now, as for graphic quality, sound, etc... They are the same as the original games. Not Grade A quality by TODAY'S standards, but vintage and classic and enjoyable in their own way.
The strengths of the series -
1 - Classic games that are highly enjoyable, fun, and difficult! List this strength 7 more times and you've got it!
2 - Each game maintains the same difficulty (on normal) that they had on the original console, and for the less experienced players, the difficulty setting is adjustable, as are the starting number of lives and a "Help" mode that can be turned on and off to guide you through games 1-6.
All in all, this was a purchase much worth the wait. Classic games that are fun, challenging, and entertaining.
Two thumbs (and both arms) up on this one!
Pretty good

Ive been a fan of megaman from the beginning. I wouldve been still playing the originals if my original NES hadnt gone on the fritz. What can i say, i have a taste for the classics. When i heard about this coming out, i had a feeling itd be cool. It took me a while to get used to the games all over again, but its worth it. Id definitely recommend it for the mm fans out there.
