The Gamecube version is actually better!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

I've owned the PlayStation 2 version of this game for a long time and recently purchased the Nintendo Gamecube version.
I have heard about how the Gamecube Killer 7 has better loading times, and smoother graphics, and I can confirm that. What I didn't realize is, a lot of cool little graphical effects are in the GC version and not on PS2.

Gamecube Killer 7
+ Load times and menu transitions are much faster.
+ Graphics and cut scenes are smoother looking.
+ Controller scheme is different, but it works really well.
+ Junction screen (when you choose a path) has a red tint and shattering screen effect, and when you choose your path the game does some strange blur and subtle psychotic effects.
+ Scanning enemies and the weak points look slightly different, but in a really cool way. You can tell this was how the game was meant to look.
+ Changing personalities is much quicker, and there are better particle effects, and the background fades in and out of color.
+ Changing the camera angle button actually swings the camera around you instead of just instantly switching so you can get a cool view.
+ Gameplay seems smoother and faster.
- The game is on 2 disks so you have to swap them, not a big deal really.

PlayStation 2 Killer 7
+ I like the PS2 Controller scheme better
- Jagged edges
- Gameplay slowdown and graphical glitches
- Pre rendered gamecube cutscenes
- Longer load times

If you haven't played this game, either version is great, but once you've played both versions you can really tell that it was made for Gamecube, it was meant to be played on that system. So keep that in mind, also if you don't have gamecube you can pick one up for 30 dollars nowadays, and you'll be able to play a lot of really cheap used awesome games.

For the actual review of the game you can look elsewhere, all I have to say is it's not a game for common people, but since when were "common people" experts on what's good. I don't like the same music or eat the same food as "common people", so why pick your video games based on what everyone else likes?

This is a very unorthodox video game that might be upsetting to you if you have some false expectations. I for one adore and treasure this game as unique gaming experience. It's confusing and trippy and sometimes hurts, other times you'll be frustrated or even board. But you'll come back for more again and again. If anything else this game is worth it just to see it in motion, it looks and sounds so incredibly different then anything out there. And if you actually try to get into the plot, you'll be really entertained, or just afraid.

Bottom line: it's worth the money and time to play through it at least once.

I am not going to go into a long explanation why Killer7 is worth playing because for some people it won't be. For people who want to play a typical 3rd person action game, Killer7 will not be anything you expect.

I have both hated and loved this game at times but after coming back to it multiple times, I have gained respect for each time and enjoyed it more.

But I have still not completed it. Why? You might ask. Well the game is also one of the most frustrating games to play as well. The controls (much like Resident Evil) take quite a while to get comfortable with. And the puzzles make about as much sense as.... Well they make any sense at all.

So what's to like about the game? Well, once you get a handle on the combat, its quite fun. The sound design is simply awesome. The character animation and art work are unbelievable for a video game. It looks as good as most dark graphic novels. If feels that way too.

The game also manages to creep you out like few games can. The voices of the NPCs and the laughter of the enemies (Heavens Smiles) will disturb even the most steady gamer.

What I recommend is picking it up cheap, and use gamefaqs when the puzzles make no sense (they are easy but dumb) and take your time. I would also recommend re-starting the game once you get a real feel for the combat. You see, the game kind of punishes you for not playing well in the beginning which really isn't fair for such a bizarre game.

Why go through all that trouble to play Killer7. Because its just so cool. It truly is. Its completely unique and you haven't played anything like it, I guarantee. Its worth playing just to check out the animation work on the seven characters and the great sound design.

Will you enjoy the game? Only if you are a fan of the kind of art that the game is putting forward. For me, the gameplay was not good enough to keep me playing but the style, art, sound, and bizarre story, were enough to keep me coming back. And, in the end, I found a whole new appreciation for what the game did so well and put up with the stuff it didn't and I definitely think it was well worth it.

An Experience More Than a Game

This is a game that does what you have most likely never seen in a game. It is a terribly twisted world that has many interesting characters (many of which you play as), but as far as gameplay goes, it is lacking. Killer 7 is played on rails; you press A to go forward, B to turn around, and hold R to aim your gun to shoot enemies. This severely limits gameplay, as you can go on a very limited amount of paths and makes the entire game extremely linear.
You can play as seven characters, each has their own personality and skill set. What it comes down to, sadly, is the fact that you will use only two or three of the characters throughout the game, except for the few times you need a specific characters special ability. This is due to some characters simply having better capabilities than others.
What Killer 7 lacks in actual gameplay, it makes up for in style, which is the main driving factor to keep you picking up the controller time and time again. The game is just so intriguing, with such odd visuals and characters. No other game looks like it.

Bottom line: the game's story and style are what will keep you playing, as the gameplay is fairly average. An all around good experience, with solid controls and outstanding visuals and sound.

The only thing decent about this game is its art style. Maybe.

As a game goes, it sucks. It really does scream to be put down. The story and voice acting is equally terrible. All in all, I'd have to say this was the worst game I've ever played. Unfortunately though, I've also played Cubivore, which ends up in a tie with this one for worst game ever as well.

This is a great game. It's an on-rail shooter, but with so much more. This game is strange, deranged, delusional. It's gory, psychotic, and artistic all in one. I would not recommend this for children, or for that matter some adults. Having played many, many, games with varying levels of gore and mature themes, I can tell you this game is probably the most mature game I've played on any system. It isn't rated mature because of the language, nor is there much sexuality. It's a mature subject matter and has a lot of non-realistic, yet very real and twisted gore.

Interactive story is more like it

If you are expecting to play a "videogame" in the traditional sense of the word, look somewhere else...If you want to try something quite different and ENTERTAINING -that happens to be played on a videogame console-, give this one a try...

3 words to describe this : vulgar , reptetive , unique

Killer7's main intention wasn't to create the best shooting game in the world. It was to create a unique game that is sure to offend some people and
freakishly charge up some. The graphics are cell shaded nicely. Making everything feel dark. This game is simple. All you do is walk, turn, fight, and solve puzzles. You are set to a limited trail to walk through. Not what I call "innovation", but it's different. Killer7 is about a man who is in a wheel chair and his assassins are his split personalities. Each has their own abilites and weapons. They can level up by collecting blood.

This game tries to be vulgar on purpose. The game tries to spray as much blood as possible. Almost every sentence in the game has a curse word in it. Whenever you defeat an enemy, your character will curse. Though, sometimes it tries too hard to be vulgar. But, that's the point. It's a game that was made intentionally to bug people out and please people of certain interest.

The shooting is weird. You have no ammo. It's pretty basic and the enemies can get repetetive. But, the story and cut scences can chain them all together well.

If you are looking for a no nonsense shooter which is fast and furious, this might not be for you. But if you are looking for a game which is unique and you get a kick out of disturbing content. Go for it. It's a hate it or love it title.

Prepare to lose your mind...and not miss it.

This game is best discribed as a psychological break with a controller. You play as one of seven personalities, the main questions in the game is: which is the original? why the dead sometimes don't die? why ALL the personalities seem to have had individual lives at one point? The graphics are a living breathing anime which requires some adjustment at first but, before too long your eyes fill in the gaps and the entire picture becomes 3D. The story is admittedly difficult to follow as far as origins of the characters, and who is working for who, so plan to play it at least twice to understand.

while most complain that the movement is lacking, or simple, it becomes evident that if it were not so you'd be wandering the same halls over and over and think you're getting somewhere. while providing an 'easy play' it's definitley one you're going to want to play again and again (if only to freak out your parents).

This game contains stylised gore and severe sexual situations(but no nudity, go figure) so, if you don't like these sorts of things then this is not the right game for you.

In the name of Harman... this game is great!

I'm not new to writing reviews. I've done quite a few, on Amazon and elsewhere. Usually it's pretty easy, but this Killer 7 review was actually very difficult, and took me a great deal of time to complete. There are NO WORDS that can adequately describe the Killer7 experience, and any real attempt to do so is doomed to become a rambling stream of metaphors and descriptions.
I can't in good conscience say "Buy this game right now", only in part because of the intense content. Most people I've talked to are pretty polarized about Killer7: they either love it to death or hate it intensely. I'm one of the former, so of course they're the correct group.

Killer7 is one of the strangest, darkest, most controversial (or it would be, if more people knew about it) and overall great games I've ever played.

STORY: Wow. Just... wow. Where do I begin? What can I possibly say? I can't pretend to even understand half of the story, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's incomprehensible. It's like Neon Genesis Evangelion, in that way; you sort of have to find your own meaning. What starts as the Smiths on just another mission to wipe out some Heaven Smile takes a turn for the (even more) bizarre, and... well, I'd have to start going into tedious details to elaborate any further. As you play through various missions, you realize that there is much more going on than simple terrorism. God-like beings, political scandals of global proportions, child organ trafficking and the true nature of the United States all have places in the story, as well as the twisted past of the Killer 7 and their entourage of Remnant Psyches (ghosts, for lack of a better description, who show up and talk to/aid/abuse you every so often.)
Though only two of the main characters have much of their pasts revealed, you will quickly come to know each of the 7 like family, albeit really scary and abusive family. Even the minor characters are unforgettable, though not necessarily in good ways. From the bipolar nurse Samantha to postal-worker-turned-cult-leader Ulmeyda to ever-present bungie-lovin' bondage fan Iwazaru, whose repetitive and eventually annoying monologues read quite a lot like those from the King of All Cosmos in Katamari Damacy. Except, you know, twisted and evil.

GRAPHICS: Stylin!
You might think that cel-shading would ruin the depth and seriousness of this game, but you'd be quite mistaken. These aren't disproportionate cartoon killers. The cel-shading simply helps add to the surreal feeling of the game. Sometimes it's a little hard to tell exactly what something's supposed to be, but that's not always a bad thing. Are you walking up a stairway in a narrow corridor, or over an empty space illuminated by a reddish-brown glow? Is there a difference? Does it matter?
And honestly, if this game were more realistic, it would cause vomiting. See "VIOLENCE"

MUSIC: Awesome!
I got the soundtrack. Need I say more? It's mostly techno, though there are some slower beats and jazz tunes thrown in.

GAMEPLAY: Also weird.
Killer7 combines elements of rail shooters, 3rd-person shooters and First-person shooters. Normally, your character runs at a set speed along a fixed path, you only determine the direction he runs in (forward or back) and whether or not he's actually running. Every so often you'll hit a junction where you get to choose a path. When you want to shoot something, you hold down R to ready your weapon and go into 1st-person mode. Hitting L "scans" for enemies, making them visible and vulnerable.
While the variety of characters and enemies spices things up, the gameplay can get rather repetitive at times. Run, listen for an evil laugh, scan, kill, repeat. It doesn't help that each character has a single line they say when hitting an enemy's weak point, so you'll probably hear Con Smith say "F*** you!" about a thousand times before you're done. There's a scattering of puzzles, but most are extremely easy and consist largely of having the right Smith active or item equipped.

Throughout most of the game, you'll have six characters available at all times. The seventh, Garcian, is the most important and can only be called from certain places. You won't want to use him much anyway; his weapon's a joke and if he dies, it's Game Over. Why? He's the only one who can bring the others back to life. Sometimes annoying if a Smith dies immediately after a tough foe that Garcian can't possibly beat.

Two other minor issues: Loading screens are frequent and about three seconds long each, and you can't fast-forward through conversations (though you can skip them.)

VIOLENCE: EXTREME
I know I probably don't have to say this, but Killer 7 is NOT FOR KIDS. I'm no Jack Thompson - indeed, I loathe the man - but the simple fact remains that this game is probably the most violent and twisted one I have ever played.
I don't think this game warrants an AO rating, but it's about as close as you can get.
Blood is a central part of the game. You collect it, use it, trade it. It leaks from monsters in far-flying ribbons and bursts from their bodies. You can shoot off heads, arms, legs, whatever. Worst of all are the cutscenes. Samantha abuses Harman in some pretty serious ways, people are blown to pieces, everybody cusses out everybody else. You may have heard of a "full-blown sex scene" in the game. That's actually a bit of an exaggeration; the scene in question contains no nudity or explicit depictions of sex, though it's fairly obvious what's going on, and I'm not sure I would really call the event in question sex.
The above "F*** you!" was only censored because this is a public site; nothing gets bleeped out in Killer 7.
Besides, the story is deep and complicated, politically charged, and not the kind of thing children are likely to comprehend or appreciate anyway.
If you DO buy this game for your preteen, that's either one freakishly smart, mature kid or someone needs to call the Smiths on YOU.

VERDICT: YES... Maybe?
I know this line is clichéd, but Killer7 really is more of an experience than a game. If you've got the brains to follow the story, the stomach to handle the violence and the right level of aesthetic sense and/or psychosis, you will adore this game to all kinds of pieces. You'll spend hours picking apart the nuances of the complex story and going over especially awesome scenes in your head.
If not? Well, I've done everything I can for you.

We are in a tight spot!

Killer 7 is very different from many other games out there. It is both stylized and very, very, very bizzare.Basically picture RE4 with psychotic laughing enemies and getting upgrades with their blood. This is not for everyone do to the fact that not that many people, like me, who like these bizzare games. If you are not that way, give this game a home!
