I recently read that the Maxis Development Team was moved from their current location to their new headquarters in ?Redmond?. They were having trouble getting back on the March 2004 Release Schedule due to the move and it appears that this is in fact true if now its been pushed back to June. I've been looking forward to this game since it was first announced. It's sad that it is postponed but I'd rather they release a full working project than to issue a buggy one then a ton of updates and fixes.
A very boring and frustrating game

I totally loved and was addicted to the Sims I games, and played them endlessly for several years. When the first Sims 2 game came out I could not wait to get it - thinking that if the first set of games were that great, the second set had to be even better. Well, I have been sorely disappointed.
As other reviewers have said, you really do have to have a very good computer to play this game without it running sooooo slowly that you give up in frustration. We were so psyched for this game that we actually bought a new computer (well, we were eventually going to anyway, but this just hastened the process).
Sims 2 got old real fast. Maybe some people find it fun to endlessly design your sim from scratch - since in this version you choose the head, the body, the eyes, the eyebrows, the lips, hair, makeup, etc., and then the clothes - but it got very boring and time consuming. I know that you can just choose random characters, but I wanted to take full advantage of this new game feature. After designing sims from scratch once or twice though, I never bothered again, it just took so much time.
Oh, there were so many things that I hated about this game. I guess the first and most important would be that everything was "so" lifelike that it took the fun out of the game. I created a family, one father, mother and a set of twins. The parents spent the entire time taking care of the twins, who did nothing but what real life babies do, sleep, cry, poop and eat. The parents were exhausted all the time. They would simply cry. It was exhausting me just watching the characters. I ended up hiring a nanny, and the nanny would fall asleep from exhaustion as well. The nanny would quit and I would have to hire another one. I hired a maid to help clean the house - the maid was not enough. In the end the kids were taken away by social services and the parents ended up dying from exhaustion and turning into urns in the room. It was not at all fun.
The other thing that I truly hated about this game was that there was such a limited amount of objects. Again, Maxis is counting on you buying all the expansion packs . . otherwise the objects are so few that you are making the same houses, using the same objects, over and over. The talented creators that made their own sites for Sims 1 are long gone, and the objects for Sims 2 that you can download from fan sites are just amateurish.
I also did not like the 3 dimensional aspect of the game. It made it very difficult to navigate and build anything. Everything had to be placed so precisely that you spent half your time tearing things down because something did not fit correctly. Even when you go through the instruction manual and read the "how-to's" on playing the game, you are not given enough or clear information, so there are many things that you have to figure out (or never figure out, in my case) so you can't do many of the cool things that you should be able to do in this version. For example, building a pool or making a puddle of water in Sims 1 was easy, this was impossible and I could never do either.
Because this is just the first version, your Sims are limited to either being at home or you can make a community lot. Sure, I built a three story store there. zzzzzzzzzzzz. Big deal. There are so few objects to put on the community lot that are included in the game that all my "stores" on the lot were exactly the same.
Again, the graphics in the game made my game run very slowly, even with a new computer. The only way to make it run properly was for me to delete most everything that was not a stationary object - for example, putting only one t.v. on the community lot, etc., otherwise the game ran in slow motion.
I guess I just got used to all the cool extras that I had so painstakingly assembled in Sims 1, like the purple coffee maker that gave Sims all of their energy and other things instantly. Without that coffee maker the game is so hard to play. Your sims are constantly exhausted, I could never get mine to go to work, they were too tired taking care of those twins to leave the house.
Finally, the music. I hated the music. In Sims 1 the background music that came on when you were building a house was beautiful and soothing. The music in Sims 2 is jarring and nerve racking, and I would turn my speakers off it was so annoying.
In the end, I was so frustrated with this game and hated it so much that I gave it away. I ended up reinstalling Sims 1 and buying Making Magik, the last Sims 1 add-on that I thought I would not enjoy playing, and I am having a great time with that!!!
I think that Sims 2 is definitely geared towards a younger crowd who are attracted to 'flash' and lots of cool graphics. Sims 2 has that, but its all flash and no substance.
Final word - boring.
Will be quite the little bundle of joy

I have been a devoted Sims fan ever since the original. I have every expansion pack, and although there were a few minor bugs in some of them, the only one I was dissapointed in was Makin' Magic. Anyway, the Sims 2 looks to be quite fun. There will be new lighting effects, aging(which you CAN turn off by the way), a ground breaking DNA transfer, which means that when two sims have a child, that child will inherit both of the parents looks. You can also build more than two stories, which will be nice, and unlike the original, you can change the patterns on furniture. Your sims will also be more responsive to other sims actions. For example, if you make your male sim talk to a female sim, and they get to like eachother (I mean LIKE eachother), then your male sims goes and talks to some other female sim, the first female sim will react to that. Sounds great, huh? There is a lot of good vibe circulating the game, and it is much anticipated. I have already reserved the game, and I suggest that you do the same, for it will be surely sold out. By the way, Maxis plans to unleash a program called Create-a-Sim, which will be availiable for free download off their site when it comes out later this month. In Create-a-Sim, you will be able to create Sims before the game comes out!
This game changed my life and my grades lol

Thanks to this game, I was going to sleep late and forgetting my college work at that time. When the first SIms was out, it was a groundbreaking genre. Totally open-ended and you control the lives of people called SIMS. With the updated graphics which are phenomenal and some tweakings but not much, the game still is one of my favorites that I still play today. Whenever I am playing it my fiance loves----wooohooo. Its hillarious and Im surprised no attention was put on this aspect. Instead more attention was on the cheat code that takes the block off the naked blur. geez cant people find something else to wine about. The sims parts are not even represented (yeah Im guilty of using the code lol).
I own all of the expansions (except university, glamour and family fun pack). I just preordered the SIMS2: Pets and I plan on buying university. If you like to have total control, open ended gameplay, I highly recommend this game. I was disapointed with the sims having lifespans but that can be turned off so you can play your sim for a while. I found out the hard way after a few hours my sim died of old age.
it would be nice if you can actually drive a car and go to the job your sim works at. A little more animation on your block and neighborhood would be nice. Computers are a lot powerful now than when the SIMS2 came out. I highly recomend a CORE2 duo processor. I just built mine and wow what a difference playing the SIMS2 than on a P4.
Addictive and Awesome! A++++++++

From a 30 something's point of view...this game is awesome.
My hubby has to put up with my Simming but hey, that's life.
I play TSO and have all the other expansion packs as well so I am a SIMAHOLIC!
I love the daily aspirations, some are easy to obtain and some are difficult which makes it a great game. Without goals, what's the point?
I try not to use the cheats.. cough motherlode cough ...too much since that takes the fun out of it.
Definitely worth the money and the time flies by when you are playing it!
Extremely absorbing, multi-faceted game

This will be a very brief review, but I just wanted to say I've been playing this game for 6 months straight and haven't gotten bored of it, and look forward to playing it on a near-daily basis.
There are so many facets to the game. If you get tired of game-play, there's the building aspect. If get tired of building, you can learn how to make custom content. And then when you're done with that, it's time to install a new expansion pack and play the game with new challenges. There is a HUGE online fan base with TONS of custom content, so you can go "shopping" for days.
The one caveat is to make sure your system can handle it. I'd recommend an nVidia geForce 6600GT card; 1 Gig of RAM, and a P4 3.0 GHz processor. With this configuration you can run the game smoothly with little lag, and all graphic options on high. You'll still enjoy the game with lower specs, but after you get addicted, you'll want to see the Sims in all their glory.

The Sims 2 is good but I can't rate it because I have a mac! and they never have it out for mac until it is 5000 months when it comes out for windows. But dont get me wrong i do like the sims and i will buy the sims 2 when it comes out for mac. INFO: Some cool stuff about the game that I know is that if you have your people marry and have a kid it will look somewhat like you, Sims of the same sex can marry, you can control the toddlers and babys, your sims may get divorced, they have birthdays so you can actually know how old they are, there are 6 phases of the sims life baby, toddler, kid, teenager, adult, old person! And the awesome part is you know those scrawny houses with only 2 floors say good bye now you can have 3 floors but im not sure if you can have more but you might be able to. The sims finally arent so stupid not to know who there family are, If there grandma shows up your sim will come up and hug her. But im not sure what they do with friends though! This is all the info i have Bye Bob

Review coming, but first a rant...
If all you people griping about release dates would get off your butts and drive to a store to buy the game, you would'nt have to %$#@& about shipping delays! That takes care of 400 reviews.
Now, giving 5 stars for a game you've NEVER PLAYED is completely idiotic & misleading! That takes care of about 50 reviews.
I, like many, have all the other sim games and am a fan of the series... but...
I agree with the other 5 actual reviewers of the game.
Pros:
The game looks very good
The communities are bigger
There are a FEW new additions to gameplay & interacting choices
Cons:
You need a Gibson computer from the movie "Hackers" just to have decent gamplay, I have more than the min. requirements on the DVD version & gamplay is sloooooow, my wife has the cdrom version that won't play at all
load times going from place to place are ridiculous
career promotions take much longer to get
not near as many items to buy, and they have much lower satisfaction values(a $2000 bed has a energy level of 5)
if you forget to get a burglar alarm plan on losing a third of your stuff
fires start even with high cooking experience
I think Maxis should have charged $200 for this game and threw in a new cpu & video card so you could really enjoy it
Disappointing for old computers

I just got the Sims 2 for my birthday, and I was ecstatic. However, I discovered that it does not work on my computer. I have a 2000 Compaq and it took 2 hours to install, and then an hour to load the tutorial family. It's extremely slow and freezes all the time, therefore I would only reccomend it if you have a top-notch computer.
It Won't Run!

After puchasing the recommended $100.00 video card, many viedo-driver downloads, hours on the telephone with EA support, and countless emails to EA support, we cannot get this game to run on a 2-year old computer. Needless to say we are very disappointed.
