This game is exceptional in many ways. For fans of the first Sims, you cannot miss this one. There are many new features in this one, such as...

-DNA (one's children come out looking like his/her parents)

-Wants and needs (your Sim, based on the personality you give it, will have certain desires in his/her life. If you fullfill them, you will have a very happy Sim and with the need fullfillment points you can get the Sim something nice. If you fail to fullfill the needs of your Sim, your Sim just might be kissing a broom if its romantic needs are neglected or having fun with a magical bunny if its social needs are)

-Aging (this one can be quite annoying if you want your Sim to live a very long life or you become attached to it. Take care of your Sim and they will live a long, healthful life)

-Sim selection (this feature is very much unlike the first. With the first Sims you picked generic Sims and chose their clothing. With Sims 2 YOU create your Sim the way you want, from their fine facial features, to their hairstyle, to their bodyshape, and what age they will start out as)

-Interaction with objects around your Sim (your Sim can juggle bottles from the fridge or your teen Sim can put acne cream on in front of the mirror, or gussy up before a date. The options are almost endless with this one)

-Different skill uses (in the Sims 1, pretty much all your Sim could do with its skill points is get a better job or ensure that the meals they made didn't burn. With Sims 2, your Sim's skill points have more influence over his/her life. For example, if your Sim has high cooking points, your Sim has more options of food to make [a Sim with low cooking points can make cereal or poptarts but a Sim with high cooking points can make turkey dinners, salmon, etc,.])

-Building options (now you have more building options to build anything from a shack to a castle. Very realistic.)

There are many more new features, but if I were to talk about all of them this review would take up pages!

The only gripe I have with this game is that it sucks up your computer's RAM, so make sure you have a top notch computer before installing this one.

Play around, create different Sims and have fun, and you will never get bored of this one.

This is the best game ever!!!!!!!

I have been on a tonne of sims 2 websites, including the official site - believe me the screenshots it shows you here do not do the game justice. The graphics are unbelievably great and the best thing about it is the 'DNA' and the timeline of it all. Your two sims can have a baby that grows up to look like them and there are life stages like baby to toddler to child etc. The sims can now die of old age too and get struck by lightning. The houses can have three floors and one of the designers even used it to find out what an extension would look like on his house. It rocks! PS - Get an exclusive preview of the Sims 2 when you buy Makin' Magic.

Sims 2 is not really a sequel but more like an excellent upgrade that carried over everything we all loved in the original Sims 1 game and kicked it up quiet a few notches.

There are many new features in Sims 2, but I'll only mention a few ones:
The graphics were greatly improved for one. Of course, having an up to date graphic card will help in experiencing the full benefits that the game has to offer. However, the game does have the option to lower the graphic settings, so it will be compatible with even older graphic cards. Viewing the game has also been improved greatly, to the point where it's possible to view the game in every angle and zoom in to see everything quiet up close. However, there's also an option available to switch to Sims 1 view. Building houses has been upgraded to where it's possible to build a foundation, deck or even a basement. In addition, if you happen to have SimCity 4, you'll even be able to import custom cities from there to your Sims 2 game. Time has also been improved by the conversion of endless days in Sims 1 to a 7-day week in Sims 2. Obviously, this means the kids do not have to go to school during the weekend and even though most jobs require your Sims to work on the weekend they'll still get 2-days off from work. Your Sims will also have the ability to grow from a baby all the way to an elder and pass away from old age, for a change. "Not that anyone of us ever intentionally sent our Sims to Sims Heaven." A great new feature was also added that's worth mentioning, and that is aspiration for your Sims. This really helps the game in being a bit more challenging and fun.

Overall, Sims 2 took the original concept of Sims 1 and upgraded it quiet a bit in every way and I highly recommend it.

I can't wait for the sims 2 to come out. Everyone who has bought the sims will enjoy this game. No more balcony shots you will be able to look at the game as though you are actually there. Also the sims will age if you want them too (if you turn on the mode). Also thier are more cause and effect relationships such as if your sim does not exercise he will become obese and the decsions a sim makes as a teen will determine who they are as an adult. Also a sim will not have to work every day, only five days a week. This game seems a lot more relistic then the sims and a lot more fun.

the question is. . . Is it ever gonna come out

The Sims2 looks really cool. . . but is it gonna come out. They have pushed it back [several times]! Is it ever gonna come out. Than again the longer it takes the better game it is. Here is a list of some new cool features for the sims2

*Each sim has their own special DNA
*Sims can age from baby, toddler, teen, adult, old farts (old farts sooner or later die)
*You can cut your sims hair
*The kids look like their parents
*Houses can have a basement and up to 4 levels
*It is 3D
*Sims actually cook stuff such as lobster
*Each food your sim cooks you have to go gocery shoping for the ingriedents
*The higher cooking skill your sim has the more stuff they can cook
*Sims are more aware. example: If a girl sim is taking a bath in front of a window a boy sim can look in and watch

the best horrible game ever made.

the sims 2 is the best horrible game of all time. let me explain.

the sims 1 was incredibly boring to me. i got the idea of the game, but there was no point, the graphics were awful, and it was just lame. so i was hesitant to try the sims 2. however, when i first got it, i was amazed. the graphics? amazing. the load times? no problem on my computer. the tutorials? perfect. the learning curve? piece of cake. i was up and running, and totally addicted in no time. i played for hours on end, imagining that the sims 2 was the one shining star of video games, the one game that dared to do something different AND IT WORKED.

how completely, terribly wrong i was.

the sims 2 has a great deal of potential. the problem was, they ruined it with their much-touted "aspirations" feature. this means, for example, that if a sim's aspiration is to be a family man, he needs to go get a girl, marry her and have kids. or if it's career, the sim needs to get a good job. this doesn't sound like a problem, but it completely ruins an otherwise perfect game. why? because, you have NO free will in this game. NONE. i don't care what reviews say or what anyone else says, you have NONE. at all times, you must meet the demands of two different panels, the needs panel and the aspirations panel (and avoid fears). what does this mean? AT ALL TIMES YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO, BECAUSE THE COMPUTER IS TELLING YOU WHAT TO DO AT ALL TIMES. this is entertainment? no. it's no different than some guy telling you "ring this bell" over and over, and you have to do it to win a game that has no reward.

now, i knew the needs panel was going to be a factor, and it's (surprisingly) fun. who knew it could be fun to do the dishes, or lay on the couch? this is where the sims tricks you. then as you get addicted, you realize, for one thing, YOU HAVE NOOOOO free time. and i mean none. AT ALL TIMES you will HAVE to do the dishes, take out the trash, pay bills, or whatever. i mean literally at ALL times, because this game is that demanding. your levels are constantly falling and you're constantly trying to keep them at a reasonable or better level. it's work, work, work. also the "free will" option is an absolute joke. if you use the free will option, your sim will be in big trouble. let's say you have 4 things to do: take out the trash, take a shower, cook a pop-tart and put it in the trash. on free will, your sim might do 2 of those things and then be completely helpless. the name of the sims 2 should be MICRO-MANAGEMENT TO THE MAX.

i'm not saying there aren't great things about the sims 2. it's a very different idea (at least it seems so at first), the graphics, details, even the music playing on the sims' radios is copmletely amazing and creative. but considering they failed on the most fundamental level of video games (to give you some control over the game, and make the game your own) makes this game a true failure. after all, isn't that the whole point of the sims?? to make something of your own? to have free will??? if you don't believe me, notice that all the online reviews of the sims 2 were written by reviewers who didn't play it for very long. same thing for amazon. one amazon reviewer wrote she was hooked on the sims 2 for a month and then got sick of it. that's about what happened to me. i was hooked on it until i realized what i was doing. now i don't even want to look at this stupid game. so expect to enjoy it for a week or so, and then be bored to tears. you've been warned.

p.s. i also had some other problems. you start the game, and there are 3 different neighborhoods with different houses. this was great, until i realized there's no way to re-play these families, so once you mess with them even a little bit, your gameplay is saved and irreversible. also i have no interest in building a new house of my own or whatever, so this seemed even more stupid to me. also i ran across a couple of bugs. one ruined a whole family for me- a baby fell on the floor, and a bug made it where i couldn't pick the baby up no matter what. this made the mother so upset, she couldn't do anything. so i had to not play that family at all. they could have at least included more families or a way to re-play the pre-set families.

Looks awesome!

I cannot wait for the sims 2! It will be awesome! I heard there can now be 4 Floors + a basement! And I dont know about features from The Sims Expansions, but it will be MUCH more realistic, including weather. One of the videos shows a girl in a hot tub that gets electrocuted in the thunderstorm - and it looks like she still lives - Maybe now there is like a "Health Points" instead of 1 bad thing happens and your dead. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, is cause if your a big fan like me, you probably spent alot of money on the original. I spent over $200 on the sims and the expansion packs...

Inaccurate Specifications Given For Game...

When I bought this game, my month old Dell was unable to play it. Maxis is no help, as they have "bots" answering all email. Keep after them long enough, the answers just cycle. Here are the problems:

The game runs sluggish. After posting on the Maxis BBS and being verbally assaulted by fans of the game who were lucky enough to have a Non-Integrated Video Card (which was not part of the original specs on the box), I gave up. I now have a 50$ game the retailers will not take back. I've been told by very im-polite BBS / fellow SIMS2 players that my PC is junk because of the graphics card I have. If I want to play, I will have to drop close to 200$ on a new video card and perhaps even more memory (currently 512MB). Thus, I've now paid 250$ for this game...

Since the initial release you will find a sticker on the bottom of the box where game Specs are that NOW denote one must have a Pine XFX GeForce4 MX440 8x AGP 64 MB Graphics Card OR ATI Technologies Radeon 9200 128MB Video Graphics Card - Original Specs were simply 64MB Graphics card...

I checked my computer which is about two years old and it's more than capable of handling the game. Like, I have "P4", and 40 GB of hard drive, (I'm a pack rat). And a more advanced video card than they suggest. I have 256 MB RAM but I may increase that anyway, rather be safe...

This is straight from the website: http://thesims2.ea.com/about_system_specs.php

The Sims™ 2 Minimum System Specs

If you have a T&L capable video card with at least 32 MB of video RAM (such as nvidia GeForce 2 or better or ATI Radeon 7000 or better) then you need at least:
600 MHz P3 processor
256 MB RAM if Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 98 or Windows 2000
At least 3.5 GB of hard drive space
If you have a non-T&L capable video card (such as TNT2 or Intel Integrated for example) then you need at least:
1.5 GHz processor
256 MB RAM if Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 98, or Windows 2000
At least 3.5 GB of hard drive space
Recommended video cards (and the more video memory the better):
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
Nvidia Geforce 4 or FX series cards

From the nVidia website's glossary
Transform & Lighting (T&L) definition: Two separate engines on the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) that provide for a powerful, balanced PC platform and enable extremely high polygon count scenes. Transform performance determines how complex objects can be and how many can appear in a scene without sacrificing frame rate. Lighting techniques add to a scene's realism by changing the appearance of objects based on light sources.

Some other notes about video cards:
T&L video cards started shipping around 3 years ago, so if you got your computer in the last couple of years you should check and see if you have a T&L card.

It's always a good idea to make sure you have the most current drivers for your video cards. The manufacturers usually have the video drivers on their sites for you to download. Visit the nVidia site or the ATI for the latest drivers for those video cards.

Be careful

Unless you have a brand new computer or very updated one, this game will not work. Will cause a lot of hours of fustration to get it installed just to learn that it will not play. Be very careful purchasing this item.
