Nice darn game, especially for the price

Unfortunately, this game got some bad early writeups because of a semi-weak demo released a couple weeks before the game itself.

However, the new engine is great and smooth, and the new game is well true to the originals. Wide open space shootouts (loved in the originals) aren't quite as common due to the improved ability to handle more things on-screen in closer areas, but this game *rocks* no matter what.

Great graphics, great gameplay, great humor, and one of the smoothest engines out there. Secrets, different strategies, etc., lead to ready replay, as well.

Fully recommend, especially for the price. As far as I'm concerned, this is what games should be like. Now that a new engine has been developed, hopefully sequels are on the horizon as quickly as they occurred with the original Serious Sams.

Outstanding as far as I'm concerned, and fully recommended. Very polished and *almost* 100% bug-free, too.

Especially if you've played prior games in the Serious Sam series, this is a no-brainer.

Excellent game

I played the first 2 Serious Sam games and loved them. I feel that there is MORE graphics in this version for those who know how to set the graphics right for their computer systems of course. This game runs best on AT LEAST 2.2 GHZ of processor speed and at least an Nvidia Geforce 5700 Ultra. This game like others are pushing the limits for graphics so updating will be necessary no matter what. I will have to disagree with the person who only gave this one star. He also rated everything else in his review list bad to, so that person has a very negative outlook on something like Serious Sam 2 that he simply did not enjoy like I did. And they have a LOT of monsters to kill and enemies and more so than in the last game. The outside graphics are more varied now. This is NOT meant to be exactly the same as the first game and they added the flying machines Sam can use which I like to. More weapons and a great game for the price at 29 bucks on Amazon. To the one who missed out, shame on you!!!

Same Developer. Same Sam. Better Game.

I've seen a review here and there that say this game was 'corporatized'. Bolognie. This was Developed by Croteam.
The same small group of guys who made the first games.
And, other than the fact that Sam's one-liners aren't as funny this time around, this game is flat out better.
I LOOOVVEEE the Zombie Businessmen. Those guys are hilarious.
And, the backgrounds are simply amazing. Pure and lush. Very colorful. You best have a power rig if you wanna get this baby goin' full steam, though. I've got a P4 3200 with 1 GB DDR ram and a PCI-Express 256 MB DDR ram video card.
I STILL wasn't able to get all of the features kicked to high.
Close, but not all the way.
Lots of new baddies, including some re-imagined versions of the old ones.
The voice of Sam seems to be deeper and a little less comical. I guess you could say, more 'serious'.
Overall, if you've got 4 GIG worth of hard drive space, like a game that NEVER lets up from the action, and have 30 bucks lyin' around, you can't fail with this.
There's even a bit of an actual story-line with this one!
Not that it matters. You'll be too busy getting blisters on your fingers to care.

I really loved Second Encounter, so I persisted for several hours before
uninstalling. The game has such a kiddy feel you find yourself looking for
that purple dinosaur we all love to hate. Mood of the background music is
just wrong, the cut-scenes are often distracting, and the level design
is cramped compared to Second Encounter.
My thanks to Croteam for their earlier work - never died so many times
while laughing! But this...just gonna pass.

A Shooter with a sense of Humor.

Serious Sam 2 is an excellent upgrade from Serious Sam,The Second Encounter. The graphics are grand improvement over SS-The 2nd Encounter.Mental^s evil minions are even more funny,& ridiculous compared to SS-The 2nd Encounter. Most shooters are frightening, grim, and bloody.Serious sam 2 adds humor to the game when having to kill the evil minions using a variety of Serious & outlandish weapons. All-in-all Serious Sam 2 is worth it in price, humor, etc.

Worst Sam Of All

If you want the Serious Sam experience...buy "Second Encounter". This one...:"Sam 2" is a bunch of crap compared to anything previously done. What makes the Sam franchise unique and blissfull has been abandonded here. Really bad graphics in cut-scenes, loss of keen humour (it's toilet humor now), and simply un-enjoyable level design. It's clear that the folks who did the original two "Sam"s are gone. This is a twisted version of what you used to love. Avoid at all costs.

This game is designed for a twelve year old mentality. The jokes are childish, stupid and the gameplay is repetitious, predictable and boring. Entirely script driven; advance till you hit a trigger point, kill 80 million monsters, get an extra life and some other rewards, advance to the next trigger point, repeat, repeat. Basically, you are required to navigate down a highly defined, pre-determined "go-right" path with no variation. Want to jump on some barrels, get on top of that building? Nope, off-limits, move along now.

Graphically it looks pretty good, but the cutscenes are pre-rendered, the water effects are static (guess I'm stilled spoiled by HL2). At least it was only $30.

Embarassingly bad

The first Serious Sam, which was called "Serious Sam, The Second Encounter," was a hoot because it was a first person shooter carried to a ludicrous extreme. You didn't have a dozen enemies, you had hundreds and in a few cases thousands. The arenas were huge, and looked pretty darn good. It was fast and intense, even if it was mostly overkill.

The game play is much worse, every five seconds you stop with another conversation or a cut scene. It also seems like some marketing maven decided cute was better, You have to do things like protect the little blue people with big eyes. There's a big difference between being funny and stupidly juvenile. I kept feeling like I was playing a Fisher-Price game with guns.

The graphics didn't look good, and the game engine seems to have some stability problems, it crashed my computer auto-detecting the video card. Setting up the controls was also one of the most confusing dialogs I've seen.

Pretty much this entire game is a miss. Buy the first Serious Sam, it's much better.

You want deep, meaningful game play...go play HL2!!!

This game is all about blowing s#!t up! I love it, just like I loved Second Encounter (for the record, Second Encounter was not the first game as indicated by an earlier review. Hence "Second" being in the title!) It's all about run and gun, and too many targets to count. Yes, the humor is juvenile, so what?! Funny is funny. The engine can push your system if it's not up to date, but what current title doesn't? There is no deep story here; you're the chosen one (maybe), you save the poor little whatever inhabits the planet you're on, you blow the bad guys to hell, repeat! This isn't as easy as it sounds though, at times the screen is covered in enemys. I have a midrange system; 2.8G P4, 2gigs of DDR, and a 6800GS vid card and the game flys. I'm sure the reviewers who complain of poor graphic in gameplay (the cutsceens don't look that great on any system) might need to upgrade video cards. The game is bright and cartoon-y, most likely to offset the massive violence you commit. It's not like F.E.A.R. headshot kinda violence, but you do kill alot of things. Lots of fun, but not much thinking. Circle-strafe and watch your ammo!!!

sam is a fun game
