Amazing game!

I purchased this just before I went on spring break. All during spring break, I spent most of my time playing this game. It is loads of fun to play. It teaches some of the basics of guitar playing and drum playing that are required for doing the real thing (obviously it doesn't have strings like a real guitar, but it does teach you to move your fingers to press the correct buttons and strum like what you do with a real guitar).

My only complaint and why I gave four stars rather than five, is because the wireless guitar that comes with Rock Band Special Edition PS2 IS NOT COMPATIBLE with the Guitar Hero games. I purchased all three Guitar Hero games right after I bought Rock Band thinking it would work and it doesn't work with any of the Guitar Hero games. I had to purchase a seperate guitar controller to be able to play the other games.

The only game the guitar that comes with Rock Band is good for is ROCK BAND! However, the guitars that you get with Guitar Hero DO WORK for ROCK BAND. I hope that this review has given you an idea about this wonderful video game.

Just to reinterate, this game is great! Definitely worth the money!

Who hasn't dreamed of being in a band at some point? Like most people, I had been to countless concerts and always wondered what it would be like to play the songs I loved successfully in front of a crowd. With Rock Band, you can do exactly this.

Rock band allows you and three of your friends to start a band and go on tour. Your choices of instruments include a drum, guitar(s), and a microphone. The game comes with one guitar but supports two so that both a bass and lead guitar line can be played. If you already own Guitar Hero, that guitar will work fine with this game.

Additionally, the drum is a high quality electronic drum set that includes four pads and a pedal for the bass drum. While difficult to master at first, it provides the most fun experience and can be extremely entertaining to all around you.

The microphone allows a brave soul to attempt to sings the songs that are being played. While getting the words right is not that important, singing at the right time and on the right pitch is how you get the high score.

More than anything, Rock Band is a social event. It is most fun when 3-4 people are playing and even more fun when you have a crowd of people watching and cheering you on. It is a great game for parties and has an engaging and challenging tour that will keep you going back for more.

Actually got my WIFE to play it!

Fantastic FUN! Great challenge! Hours of enjoyment - downside is there are LIMITED songs - we BREEZED through the EASY setting in 2 sittings (about 6 hours total...) as for MEDIUM setting - it does get more difficult.
The beauty is anyone can play - it's great for eye/hand coordination and most of the songs I enjoy!
And oh yeah - my wife wanted it more then I did after using it at a Best Buy (Amazon was SO much cheaper though!)! She plays the guitar!
It is worth the price for the game and it is actually very clode to playing REAL drums... like I said the only negative is the limited songs that you get with the game (and half are only worth listening to)...

Great Game! Thanks for the splinters, Ludwig...

My son is loving this game!!! I knew he would, I played it once at a party and it's a blast. You can see how they get independent coordination into the drum parts, and what is better than learning without knowing it? LOL

Watch out, though, they include the cheapo model of Ludwig drum sticks, unsanded and unvarnished - he got splinters, brought them down asking us to sand them.... (I am a musician, & know my sticks. These are crapola.)

Make sure you have sandpaper or a spare pair of sticks to use...and a throne.

Not bad considering

First, if you're thinking about getting this game and you have the option to, buy it on the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360. The Playstation 2 version of the game itself is stripped down to the minimum acceptable level. No Downloadable Content (or online of any sort for that matter), World Tour suffers terribly, no customization whatsoever.

I first bought the PS2 Special Edition because I did not yet own either the PS3 or Xbox 360 and didn't want to waste too much money if I didn't like the feel of the game at all. Later on I ended up getting a PS3 and Rock Band was amongst my first titles I bought for it. I instantly felt like I'd made the right choice.

Something to note:
All the peripherals inside the PS2 Special Edition are completely identical to the PS3 Special Edition, with the exception that the PS2 version includes a 4-port USB Hub, which is particularly nice should you need the ports on say a 40gb PS3 in the future (as the system only has 2 available USB ports) or for your general computer needs.

To date, I've expanded the basic 58 songlist up to 96, and soon to reach 100+. New Downloadable Content songs are added to the Playstation Network Store and Xbox Live Marketplace each week at a price range of $1-2 each, or in song packs (generally consists of 3 songs for $5.49). And should you be in a hurry to get the new DLC, Xbox Live Marketplace updates their Rock Band content a few days quicker than the Playstation Network Store does.

Anyways, that's my small contribution to the product page. I hope this and the other reviews given here have been of some help.

Gotta take issue with Mother Sunshine's review:

"among a slew of christian rock and other unknown (and not good) songs. It's not very fun to sing about Jesus in every other song unless you love to sing about Jesus, iykwim."

Here's some links to a list of songs in Rock Band:

Where exactly is this "slew of Chrsitian rock?" I don't see it. In fact, I can't see one (but I'm not that well versed w/ all Contemporary Christian Music). .Personally, I'd love to see Stryper, P.O.D., Flywheel and the like, but that's me.

Great Family Fun!

This is a great family game. It was a huge hit on New Years. I couldn't get people out of my house until 5am. These are all people with no Guitar Hero experience and were initially skeptical of playing. I assumed the drum piece would be easy, but I was terribly mistaken. It is the hardest piece to do. My 8 year old was able to pick up on the drums but she has that kind of talent and was already quite skilled at guitar Hero. I can even let my 5 year old to sing. He doesn't know all the words but can mumble in tune. So even the little ones can participate. This game is so fun to play I even got my 60 year old mother to join in.

As far as pure guitar play, I would choose Guitar Hero over rockband. Better songs and it seems to be more challenging. Plus you can choose your own characters and play gigs for money.

Speaking of songs, I have to admit I was a little disappointed in the song selection. Hopefully it won't be too long before they offer a rockband 2 and have better song selection.

LOVE the game, but the peripherals not as much...

Coming from Guitar Hero 2 & 3 I think Rock Band is just as fun, if not way more fun because of adding the other aspects. Trying to play guitar while singing is quite challenging! My biggest thing was deciding whether to just by the game or the bundle, and I bought the bundle, so here's what I think.

I do not love the guitar, and after a few songs on hard switched back to my red gibson and did much better. People have said they like the fact the strum bar doesn't click, and this doesn't bother me at all, but the note keys clack like crazy when you press them, plus you can accidentally hit a note with your thumb as you are holding the neck, all of which was irritating. So the guitar was not really needed.

The drums are okay, but having to use the pedal (tiring!) all the time takes some of the fun out for me, and the thwacking sound when you hit the drums overpowers the actual drum sound in the game so I didn't think it was that fun.

The mic is the same kind as the karaoke games, so you probably don't need it.

So in sum, I probably didn't need the bundle for myself, as I would probably stick to the guitar and mic. But it would be worth it of course if you knew you would actually have 4 people that wanted to play at once. If you are going to buy the drums anyway, you might as well buy the bundle, as it would be almost as expensive.

The setlist is GREAT!!! Better then guitar heros by far I think! There are a few of the same songs from Guitar Hero 3, and it is funny to have to play them differently.

In sum, I highly recommend it, and I will probably end up playing it more then Guitar Hero, albeit with my GH guitar :)

PS/2 Rockband

Bought this version of Rockband so that I could play it with my son while he is at my house (his Mom has PS/3 and my son also bought that version to keep at her house). The PS/2 version has a couple of differences that were noticeable: you are not able to create your own character, and you can't download new songs off the internet. The first difference is really no big deal as far as gameplay goes, but the second difference is a killer.

Once you've played through the 58 or so songs that are included with this version, you will realize that you need more. It's still fun to re-do the songs trying to get a better score or trying to get better at playing the songs. We went through the World Tour once on medium, and then started doing it on the hard level. The cold reality of it is that because of the finite number of songs included, you will eventually become bored with the game. That being said however, until that time comes the game is an absolute blast! This is one of those games that truly brings parents and kids together. No matter what your skill level is, you can participate and have fun. My son plays most every song on hard, while I am content to fumble around on medium.

As a parent that likes to play video games, I can tell you that this is probably the most interactive game I have found--meaning that my son and I interact much more with this game (and more positively). We also play all the sports games and co-op military-themed games...and what usually ends up happening is that my son gets fed up with my inept marksmanship or inability to defend the rush. Then my competitive nature takes over and we end up arguing. There are no such issues with Rockband.

One other negative about the game so far (besides the lack of song selection) is the lack of a second guitar. I found out after several trips to electronics stores that there is no second guitar out yet for the PS/2 version. That just means that one of us drums while the other plays guitar for now...but if there are more than 2 people who want to play, the third has to do vocals and the 4th sits around and watches. As for the actual selection of songs included in the original 58...I think there could definitely be a better mix, but overall it is pretty good. My son actually likes MY music and some of the classic rock stuff in the game brings us together even more.

Overall, I would DEFINITELY recommend this game to any family looking to spend quality time together...just make sure you have enough room in the living room to accomodate the drum set!

PS2 Version is almost as good as the PS3 Version

I've been playing Rockband on the PS2 since January. I just got a PS3 and bought the standalone disc for Rockband for PS3 (picked up a used one for cheap at a local game store). The same instruments all work for the PS3. You do not need to buy new instruments if you upgrade from a PS2 to a PS3. However, the solo player mode is almost identical in both versions. It's the multiplayer mode that really shines on the PS3, plus the downloadable content (DLC). However, the game is really, really solid on the PS2 and if you play solo and don't care about the DLC and purchasing additional songs, you're not missing anything important by not having the PS3 version.

There is an extra song pack disc coming out soon for the PS2 anyway that contains many of the same tracks you can download for the PS3... and I believe it works out much cheaper per track on the disc than if you purchased it as DLC.
