I gave this to my daughter and she cannot stop playing. It is challenging but not frustrating and having the choice of which band member to be (guitar, drums or vocal) adds so much variety and flexibility. I assume that it was easy to set up, since my 12 year-old opened it, set it up and began playing with it when I wasn't even looking! This is the only game she has ever nagged at me to play with her. I picked this up during a Gold Box deal and I cannot believe what we got for the money. Keep up the good work Amazon!
Great Family Game!

Our family loves this game and this was a great price we found. It was even cheaper than what Costco had it priced as!
Great for the whole family

This product was purchased primarily for our kids (ages 13 and 11) but my wife and I have also enjoyed taking part. I have enjoyed playing the guitar and drums and my wife, who loves to sing, has really enjoyed taking the microphone and signing to the songs. Part of it is the sentimental aspect of playing songs we grew up with in the 1970's and 1980's.
This is not to say the kids don't love it because they do. Most of their friends also have the game so we often have extra guitars over and there are some really big jam sessions. All in all we are very pleased with the game. It was as advertised and was a real value buying through Amazon compared to any local retailers.
fun for whole family

we really like Rock band, it is something we all can do as a family. The price at amazon it fantastic. Only reason we left one star out is they should of did a variety of songs instead of what they have many of them we never heard of, if they had added some other main stream songs everyone knows then our friends would like it to but they didn't because they did not know the songs. Like Joan Jett I love rock n roll, Def Leppard, other bands like these. It is still fun!
great buy

I bought the playstation 2 Rock Band Drum set for my sub-teen nephew and niece. I am age 67 and quite computer literate, but the children did not require my assistance for the basic hookup. Any instructions beyond the basic hookup of the wires were sparse to non-existant.
The drums and guitar work fine, the microphone is just so-so.
It will work OK "out of the box " but to get the best results, fine tune it. Most important is to set the ratio of playstation instrument sound to the background music. The default settings will hardly let you hear the PS instruments. Once again, no instructions, you must be a little digital literate. Go to audio setup, if you can find it.
In short, I am glad I bought it at a terrific price through Amazon, and Melanie and Brandon think I am the greatest Uncle who ever lived.

The kids pooled their allowances to buy this game and waited with baited breath for it to come. Unfortunately it came when they were visiting their grandparents (they waited too long to order it). But when they got back home, there was cardboard everywhere and a thunderous roar as they ran upstairs. Everyone in the family can play it (mom is partial to the drum set). Well worth the wait and the cost.

I have good and bad to say about this game. I'll go through each instrument as well as the game.
-guitar
the one that comes with the bundle is a little more to average to just about average. It's reall light so if you're a strong person you might worry about breaking the thing. It's wireless the bundle comes with 3 double A batteries that go in the back of the guitar. I was worried about the small screw that keeps the cover on but I got if off and on with the tip of a knife. I'm worried about the lifespan of the batteries if you like to rock out with your friends alot I can see going thru some of them. It has the normal 5 frets like guitar hero. What's neat is the guitar also has 5 smaller frets near the base ideal for kids that don't have good reach and/or small hands. It has a toggle switch but, it's just for realistic sake even though it does move up and down and does stay in palce like a real one. The whammy bar is decent. I worry about breaking the thing if you play guitar or have played guitar you might show concern for that area because one pull like a real whammy and you'll break it off or break the bottom out of the guitar. It has a directional pad on it like a ps2 controller so you don't have to reach for your controller you can use the guitar or the drums has one too.
-drums
I have some decent issues with the drums. And if you're a drummer you're gonna get frustrated fast like I have but, the set is still fun. Biggest frustrated I had with them is the bass pedal. You can hit the pedal at the right time and sometimes it won't take. I guess i'm used to the feel of a real bass pedal too it takes quite a bit to get used to. Drummers will also show concern for slamming down on it and breaking it even wearing socks I have to resist the urge of pushing my foot down hard like a real pedal. Also the ride cymbal "blue pad" has missed a few notes a couple dozen times. This could be due to my habit of playing real drums. As I noticed in a ps3 review of rockstar a person commented on having to hit the pad right in the center to take. So if you are used to a ride cymbal you'll be frustrated when it doesn't take till you hit it in the center. The sticks they are average. If they came finished i'd say above average. They are light weight all wood even the tips. And they will irritate your hands after a bit. Thinking about finishing them with some clear coat or something. A reviewer mentioned buying a set of sticks that's something you'd have to decide for yourself. If I took my pro marks to these pads i'd obliterate them. Other than all those quirks they are fun to play.
-mic
I can't say anything bad about the mic. It doesn't have a normal mic feel but, it is comfortable The only two comments i'd add to this would have been nice to have a volume wheel or knob to adjust how loud or soft you sound. Not all of us can hit those reall high notes like the ones in i think i'm paranoid. Would have been an extra conveince to have an on off switch
the game- the ps2 version kind of makes me wish i went out and got a ps3 and got the ps3 bundle. There's no character customizing, no instrument customizing. and you feel a bit detached when you're singing something like the yeah yeah yeahs and the singer is a girl and you're a guy or if you're a girl and there's a guy singer. There's no story, no medals or prizes,or money nothing that makes you feel like you are in a band. The only decent thing is unlocking songs is the only real feeling of any accomplishment. If you don't care about any of those aspects and just want to have a blast with your friends then the game is ideal. And has a decent selection of modes such as tug of war. The game has a nice selection of tracks and it's doubtful you'll get bored of playing the same tracks over and over again since you can always switch the instrument you are playing or increase or decrease the difficulty.
Great when it's working, but lotta of trouble getting it working!

I really love Rock Band cause it lets me and my friends all play instead of just 2 guitars as with that other game ;) But a warning to all slim-PS2 owners... this game can be VERY difficult to get working. The old "fat" PS2 seems to never has trouble. I have both, but I have tried it on other slim PS2 and also have TONS of trouble getting it loading. Usually it needs to be leaned at a standing angle to get it started, and even then it takes several tries. SO... if you have a slim-PS2 only then be warned this game has much loading trouble (not just for me, you can google about the PS2 version of Rockstar and see lots of similiar complaints). Great game though otherwise, I think it's more Sony's fault than anything since they apparently did something to make the slim PS2 "cheaper" and enable to read what the old PS2 could do without trouble.
