Whether you're talking console or the PC, Rome Total War is one of the best you will ever play. I won't break down all the graphics and sound because others have done a more than adequate job of that. Besides, all you need to do is look at the screenshots to know that the graphics are awesome.
I'll take a moment to discuss what I didn't like. Keep in mind I gave this game 5 stars so it must not have bothered me too badly. It's a little hard to balance out having a large enough population in a city to produce troops and still have the city make money. I don't like that once you become the Emperor you can't keep going and rule the whole world. That's about it.
If you still don't have this game, get it.I bought it when it first came out but just never got around to writing a review until now. I am however normally a bargain hunter and wait until games are a couple of years old to buy them. So for those of you who are like me and waited until now, take it from Showtime....it's well worth the price.
Much more than I expected!

All I can say is WOW!!!! I have Shogun: Total War, and I only played the campaign once, and a couple dozen skirmish battles before I tired of the game.
I was worried that I'd feel the same about Rome: Total War, but boy was I wrong! This game is so fun to play, and not just the skirmish mode, but the campaign mode is awesome. You can play other cultures as well; like the Greeks, Gauls, etc....
The battles are so fun to play. I love a line of Spartan Hoplites arrayed in a line while being supported by missle cavalry and archers. On my flanks I position my heavy cavalry as well as in the rear to plug any gaps. My line totally shuts down the Romans, and makes me wonder what it really would've been like to see the Spartans in their prime, fight an equal sized Roman army. I think they could've won, and won soundly!
If you tried the earlier two Total War games, and found them to be too boring, please reconsider on this one. There is no comparison!
Good game ruined by bad customer support.

Rome:Total War is an enjoyable game to play.Graphically the game is great to look at.However the play can be a bit lacking.
The game could be alot better. But do to poor AI and bugs in the game as well as problems implemented since the last patch and the poor customer support for the game by Activision/Creative Assembly due to their denial that the problems actually exist and refusal to fix them.
The game could easily get a 4-5 stars IF the problems were not there but I cant in good concience give any better than I do.
Really Good Game

I've had this game since March or April of 2005, and i've been hooked ever since. A couple problems are:
1. Crashes. Sometimes, if your computer isn't very good, opening event messages that have a video, causes the computer to crash.
2. The AI is only ok, especially in battles. If you completely outnumber an enemy, then they will just sit in the corner and let you rip them to pieces from afar.
3. The senate, which you have to deal with if you are a roman faction, is annoying and the senatorial offices are really badly represented. I jsut finished a book about the roman republic, and i think you should be able to do more if you hold a certain office, and how come there is only 1 consul, when there is supposed to be 2, and only 1 questor, there should be 4, i think. What would have made it really cool would have been if you were able to try and push forward a policy, since say the senate's policy against the Brits is to not attack, there should be an option on the senate scroll to say "Push for war' and then "against Brits" and then the senate will decide, like each family member gets a vote. Wouldn't that be awsome?
Enough with the bad stuff, the game is a lot of fun because:
1. Battles are really good. Besieging a city with gigantic walls with siege towers and ladders is alot of fun, but fighting in the woods and setting ambushes is sooo cool! Also, you have to use strategy more than those other rts games, like the age of empires series, where its more of having a lot of men and flinging them at the ememy. In Rome TW, its more about unit types, flanking, ambushing them as they come through the woods.(a personal favorite)
2. The campain map is a lot of fun, and managing all aspects of your settlements so that your empire is a efficent money machine is also alot of fun.
3. Having your characters develop their skills is fun, but sometimes you have a really good general, who is like 40, is a veteran of many campains, suddenly become a coward? But other wise, character development is a plus.
Overall, i would buy this game and prepare to lose lots of sleep staying up and playing.
My favorite RTS game

I love good RTS games but with the exception of the C&C series, they're hard to come by. I've always wanted to have a game where the amout of units you have is drastically larger than 30 in one group, in Rome: Total War you command 100's of troops that include archers, Cavalry, spearmen, swordsmen, and artillery. You can choose from three Roman houses, the The Brutii, the Scippi, and the Julii, each whith they're different advantages. Your goal is to one day capture Rome from the SPQR (the Senate)and then conquer the surrounding territories. Instead of only using bloodshed you can use diplomacy and also bribe enemy armies to disband or join your army, but what's the fun in that. For by far the part that is the most fun in this game are the battles. The game has a tendency to suck you in for hours, trying to build up your cities and ward off enemy attacks all while staying out of debt. I love the way Creative Assembly mixed RTS with turned-based-strategy to create a truly challenging game. The game does take awhile to complete, try a couple of weeks at 5 hours a day (cheats which would drastically quicken gameplay). The graphics aren't so good though in this game and when you have a large army, the game tends to lag (that could just be my X700 though...). Other than that this is a great game which I always enjoy playing when I'm bored.
A leap forward in RTS Games

Rome: Total War is a landmark advancement in RTS games. The compelling battles and intricate stategy engine ensure that this game is guaranteed value. It is very difficult to go back to early 3D RTS games such as AOE2 after playing a game like this. Rome immerses you in battles, such that you feel you are actually there and fighting for your life. Rome is not without its flaws but overall this is a truly impressive game and deserves the accolade as "the very definition of an epic strategy game".

First of all i would like to say how easy i found this game to play even as a fourteen year old and i am surprised some people had such difficulty with it.this was my first total war game as i usually find sitting inside playing games very boring but i have to say this game is superb. The battles {which are exellent and very realistic}are not the only thing which make this game so good, the planning that goes into them{recruiting troops and appointing generals}is very fun also.
But perhaps the two best things about this game are manageing settelments and conqouering new lands. The reason I find manageing settlements so good is becuse it gives you much more control over things like construction finances and recruitment. No matter what you do you always seem to make a bigger profit if you manage the settelments yourself rather than let the game do it.
and finnaly i move on to conquering new lands which is probably he best thing about this game. But this area of the game does take some getting used to.Although actuly taking settelments can sometimes be easy holding on to them is a different story. In my expirience it is best to graduly expand your empire stopping now and again to check all you other settelments are ok.The hardest thing on this game is deffinetly keeping your faction profitable which is vital. The best way to do this is to keep garrison numbers down and do'nt be tempted to have to many large armys as they are expensive and not really needed as the quality of your Roman troops and ganeral are nearly allways enough to win battels even against far larger forces. It is usally best to only recruit troops as the need arises.
overall i would say this game is exellent and very easy to get into.must buy!!!!.

Rome Total War was created by the same people who came up with Shogun Total War and Medieval Total War. It plays much the same, but in a new time period, the Greco-Roman Era, with very different units, (such as war elephants)and of course, much better graphics. As military history games go, Rome Total War has very good graphics. The style of play is completely militarized, as opposed to games such as Empire Earth or Age of Empires. In those games, a unit consists of one man. In Rome TW, a unit can be as many as 120 men, and that unit can fight in different formations. Also, a unit's defense, speed, rate of fire, attack, etc increase and decrease in relation to the side that they are attacked from, what formation they're in, and even what the weather conditions are. You can conduct sieges with large siege weapons that vary greatly. This is not a game of just catapults and trebuchets. You can use onegars, heavy onegars, war elephants, ladders, sap points, rams, siege towers, scorpians, anything it takes to break down enemy walls. The units for each civilization are completely unique, ranging from Carthaginian War Elephants and Iberian Infantry, to Greek Spartan Hoplites, to the Roman Urban Cohorts. All in all, it is an excellent military game, but I would not recommend it to those partial to peaceful economic play or citybuilding. If that is your preference, try Caesar III, Civilization IV, or SimCity 4. If you buy this game, I would also recommend buying its expansion pack, Barbarian Invasion, taking you forward in history by a few centuries. There, you can fight hoardes of Huns in the middle of the night while your Christian citizens and Pagan ones fight each other in the streets. Or you can just become the Huns and destroy Western Civilization. But that is the expansion pack, and it will probably cost you an extra 30 bucks.
This game is the best strategy game I ever played.

I read some reviews and i saw that many people complained about the speed of battle in the demo version. I just bought the full game and i say that there is no problems with the speed, unless you go to options and accelerate the battle speed, but it is up to you. This game in my point of view is the best strategy game ever produced. In order to summarize my review i could say that the creators were geniuses and it would be harder with today's technology to make a better strategy game. The only thing that they missed in my opinion is the fact that they could make the frontiers of the provinces more visible on the strategic map and not exclude mountains from being part of the owned lands. So in future Total War games i would recomend them to keep or improve all the features they applied on the Roman Total War and include the ones i cited above. To finalize my review i say that all lovers of extreme strategy games should buy this, because you wont get anything better for a long period of time.
