Metroid Fusion review

I thought Metroid Fusion was a really great game. One of the good things is the power-ups, such as the diffusion missles. I think most of the good bosses are nearer to the end, like Ridley. It can be surprising when you all of a sudden see the S.A.X. in the restricted lab. I thought this game was really great. I would recommend this game to anyone who like action, adventure and suspense.

Possibly the weakest title in the Metroid series

Metroid Fusion is one of the better action titles for the GBA, but it pales in comparison to other games in the Metroid series.

Game progression is uncomfortably linear, basing itself around a computer entity that tells you exactly where to go, what to do, and how to do it. Arbitrary limits on certain abilities prevent the player from straying too far from the intended path. The story is actually pretty interesting, but is told through large amounts of unskippable dialogue, making a second playthrough very tedious.

This is definitely one of the harder Metroid games, and not in a good way. It proves to be more frustrating than challenging. Enemy damage and hitpoints ramp up faster than Samus' firepower, so it always feels like you're catching up rather than getting stronger. Many of the boss battles are very unforgiving -- I had to use a FAQ at least once to keep from throwing my system.

The music is also a significant deviation from the rest of the series, being cold, mechanical, and unmemorable (exception: AQA underwater theme).

Don't get me wrong, Fusion is a great game, especially compared to all the other junk action titles for the GBA. It's just not up to the standards of previous (or subsequent) Metroid games. There's a lot of emphasis on combat, in a series that has always put exploration first. If you can only afford one Metroid game for your GBA, I would recommend Zero Mission instead.

Fantastic GBA game, a must have

This was a very well made Gba game, just like its past on game systems.
I love this, and is probably my favorite for Advance.
The game is loaded with secret stuff, and it's so fun to be chased around by Sa-x. The only major drawback I found on this was I bought it here on Amazon, and not long after I bought it I found out it didn't save right.
It just goes to show you you're taking a risk if you buy games online used, so I recommend getting some games new.

THE PERFIT GAME.

Overall, after waiting close to a decade for a game that suited the name Metroid, we have two games: Metroid Prime, and Metroid Fusion. I will not review Metroid Prime, because this isn't a Metriod Fusion page :). Anyways... the good, the bad, the ugly.

The Good: Continued storyline. If you liked Super Metroid, you will really like this game. The gameplay is very similar (not exact, but similar). Still has the good replay value of any metroid game by looking for all the items. Excellent graphics.

The Bad: Childlike. It's rated E for everyone, which for a metoid game is low. Super Metroid when it came out was dark, macabre, and Erie (can't spell). This game doesn't carry any of those violent factors that made metroid unique for it's time. I do not condone violence, but compared to Metroid Prime (which has alien guts flying onto your face), it doesn't seem to be the same Metroid. This is a minor side, but if a Mother is shopping for a metroid game, buy this one compared to Prime.

Also, gameplay is a little weird. I'm not a big fan of the combo button pushing deal.

The Ugly: It's not really ugly, but definately retro. If you plug your Metroid Prime Gameboy into your Gamecube, you can play the original Metroid -yeah, the one from 1985. Have fun with that...

Overall, good game. Definately buy and play.

I LOVE THIS GAME I HAVE PLAYED IT HUNDREDS OF TIMES AND NEVER FOUND IT BORING NO I DID NOT ACCIDENTALLY HIT CAPS LOCK THIS IS A GREAT GAME o.k. you get the point well don't be confused by my title the only reason i say this is becausethe game can get connfusing and a little scary for young players ecpecially when you realize the b.s.l. is a metroid breeding enviroment but for slightly older players this is a great game

When I started this game, my heart sank. A full five minutes of "cinematic" sequences with no way to skip them!? Five minutes of staring at white text and boring still graphics? What were they thinking?

Thankfully, the game is a whole other deal. Once you survive past those inexplicably long "cinematics", you're up for a side-scrolling shooter that puts its focus on the more important things. The graphics are nothing to write home about, but the mechanics are extremely responsive, the controls intuitive, and the gameplay engaging. I was surprised at the number of different moves, manoeuvres and weapons they were able to cram into this game, and it quickly draws you in.

There is also a "puzzle" element to this game as you navigate through a grid-based system of rooms looking for a way to get across. Some of these are a little obscure for my taste -- I prefer nonstop action when playing a side-scroller -- but it doesn't overuse the frustration factor.

The one major complaint I have is that this game is a long linear storyline with absolutely no alternate ways of playing. This also means if you get stuck, that's it -- no more game left to play. It would be so much better to be able to choose to replay levels you've already passed after you've completed them, to boost the replayability factor. And the very long opening sequence can't be skipped, so I'm also discouraged from future replays. Why this colossal blunder in a very simple part of games nearly impossible to get wrong?

Metroid Fusion is a very good game that charms by virtue of its old-fashioned side-scrolling simplicity. Too bad about the two issues above -- they serve to substantially reduce the fun factor. I'd still recommend this game, because there aren't that many meat-and-potatoes side-scrolling games left anymore.

Boring side scroller

Metroid Fusion is a classic 2D side scroller adventure. You walk around a maze and jump up and down to complete each objective, on the way blasting away aliens/mutants/ugly videogame characters. I appreciate its ease of controls vs. Castlevania, the latter requiring you to press all the buttons at the same time. The graphics is also among the best I've seen, and finally visible on the sidelit screen of the SP. But games like this are pretty boring after a few minutes, and if you are good you can beat it in a couple hours, with little replay value. Try renting first.
