This is the greatest of the series. The graphics and gameplay are second to none. The only drawback is that you can't use the mouse, but hey once you start playing this game you won't care!

I've been playing PC games since 1985 and this is the best game in my life. Period. I never liked shooting games and never liked horror games. But this is something special. This game has become part of me. With the American version (there's a graphic patch for the Europian and Asian versions), the graphics are incredible. The mouse is not supported but there's a patch that allows players to use a mouse. However, this game is meant to be played with a gamepad. I use an Xbox 360 wireless pad for this game and the control is very responsive.
What sets this game apart from 100+ games I've played is its game play. You must experience it to believe it. Also, this game features the hottest game babe I've seen, Ada Wong. Compared with Ada, Lara Croft seems like a joke. If you beat the main game, you unlock two special missions for Ada and they are more fun than the main game. You can also unlock a mini game called the mercenary game, which will eat your life because it's so additictive and fun.
There are many reasons why the game cube and PS2 versions of this game won all kinds of awards. With the new graphics, the PC version looks better than those 2 versions. Plus, you can get lots of incredible hacks for the PC version.

Unless everyone is commenting on the pre-patch non-US version of the game, I don't understand where all of the hate is coming from. The PC port does have a few minor quirks (Quitting the game is unnecessarily confusing with the "Reset Game" option), but all in all, it's a solid translation!
Gameplay and controls are great, assuming you have a quality USB controller (I use Logitech's Cordless Rumblepad 2). And, contrary to popular belief, the graphics are FINE. Some complain about a lack of atmosphere due to brightened environments - this is simply not an issue. The darker portions of the game are still creepy as hell, and if you feel that you need it darker, you could always decrease the brightness of your monitor. Things look awesome at higher resolutions, but you'll need a pretty powerful system to keep the framerate up (for things to flow nicely, I'm stuck with 800x600, which still looks great). To get an idea of the PC to console comparison, search for it on YouTube - you should be able to find a side-by-side comparison of the PC and PS2 versions.
Ultimately, I strongly advise you NOT to be influenced solely by the negative reviews here. I'm having an absolute blast playing RE4 on my PC, and I bet you will, too. Just make sure that you have a decent controller, crank up the sound, and kill the lights!
this is simply an amazing game

Graphics, characters story line ... all are great; the cut scenes are kind of blurry but this doesn't really turn it into a bad game as some people stated here
And for those who complain about controls, it's not an issue if you have a gamepad; never play a game with keyboard; simply buy a gamepad which make it a lot more fun and more convenient to play. You also can hook up a play station 2 controllers on pc, the adapter is available on EBay for ten bucks, and this is the way I played the game
Characters are well defined, puzzles are really fun to solve although I usually could beat them in few seconds.
You have a mission of saving the president's daughter and this gives you a sense of responsibility and excitement from the very beginning to the very last second which you leave the island on a jet ski with her on your back, such a scene!!!
The bottom line is: this originally is a very satisfying game but the pc version has some minor issues.
One of the best

Graphics look great, nothing I can complain about. I was able to run the game at my notebook's native 1400x1050 resolution by altering the SetupTool.ini file. The gameplay took Resident Evil to a whole new level. Faster enemies make the game more challenging. Also the ink ribbon saves were removed but best of all are the new weapons, inventory system and new point of view. I was annoyed at first because there was no mouse support but then I bought the wireless Logitech Rumblepad which I prefer to use now. RE4 is one of the best single player games for me, definitely did justice to the RE series and then some.
SOOOO much fun!

In my experience, the Gamecube Resident Evil 4 is one of the best games created of all time. But now that I don't have the time to play it at home as much, I wanted a version I could take on the road. So while the Gamecube version is incredible, the PC version is almost the same thing. And what's even better, is that the PC version includes the new extras that Capcom made for the PS2 version, so now there's even more.
And yes, just like the console version, a gamepad is ideal for this game. Come on people, this is an ACTION game. This game is so good that I couldn't care less that no mouse control, and limited keyboard control is available. Maybe I'm biased because I'm so used to using a gamepad, but even before buying the PC version, I had expected to, and had only WANTED to use the gamepad. I already had 2 gamepads for my PC, as they can be used in lots of games. So yes, if you have a PS3/PS2, or Gamecube, get those versions, but if you want to take the game anywhere, the PC version is nearly as good, with the added benefit of being able to play it anywhere on a laptop.
Awesome
