Zombie fun!

My conclusion first, then the details for those with patience. Do you own a playstation or gamecube? If yes, stay away. Your expectations will kill the game for you. Do you love zombies? If so then your the crowd I'm talkin to. When it comes to fighting the undead theres a lot of bang for your buck here. One word of warning, this can be a fun game but only if you happen to have a game controller, otherwise its impossible to enjoy. Expect the same ol save point drama too, so buyer beware.

Now for the details:

I played this back when it came out on my roomates gamecube and it was a lot of fun despite my hatred toward save point structured console games. The game was nearly endless, had plenty of bonuses and zombie goodness to keep my hands sore. Its been years later and I'm glad to play it on the PC with my xbox controller, not only is it a pretty true port its still a lot of endless fun. Of course it doesn't seem to look as good as before, but Donkey Kong today isn't as scary as it was back in the day either. But if I had a choice to stick with the PC version or have someone give me a free gamecube, I would still stick with the PC version.

They have added more, its got all the old bonus levels plus one more Ada set, two new weapons to earn as well. Its just as responsive on a xbox controller although yes, confusing when they ask for button mashing during movies, but hey that used to confuse me anyways on the gamecube.

So if a few grainy cut scenes don't ruin your day, you don't own the gamecube, you don't have allergic reactions to gamepads, and you want to see what the fuss was about back in the day, $20 rarely buys more fun than this.

An awful game

Oi vey.

This is a terrible game. I could get over the awkward controls and the fact that Leon moves like a fat man on rufis. I could even get the fact that the merchants sells guns but no ammo and the camera moves of its own freewill... often meaning you are attacked by zombies that you can neither see nor shoot.

The thing that got me was the contrived sequences of gameplay. First you're running around- Oh no! Now hammer on your keys to prevent getting squished by the boulder. No, you're in a village and have to follow an exact sequence of events to get ot the cutscene. Oh no! Another boulder! I gave up at the boarded-up house the fifth time a zombie got me because the camera amgle kept flickering back and forth over Leon's right shoulder.

Run. Run away from this game.

Play something where you can control the character better... maybe "Dragon's Lair."

Decent port made better with mods

The PC version of Resident Evil 4 is just about as good as the console versions. While there are mods that allow you to aim with the mouse, using a gamepad is much better. The only problem with using a gamepad is the game's deadzone (area the analog stick can move in without it affecting the game) is big and can't be changed, making precise aiming a bit harder.

With the patch and a few mods, it is the best-looking version of the game available. The low-res textures can be replaced with the ones from the Gamecube version of the game and have even more detail. Bloom and a fake HDR effect were modded into the game as well, making is look much better. Finally, those with game controllers can replace the in-game action buttons with buttons corresponding with their controllers.

The gameplay is pretty much the same as the other versions, very fun and intense. Overall, Resident Evil 4 for the PC is just about as good as the console versions, and is heavily improved with community-created mods.
