Worst port EVER

This is the very last time I will ever purchase a Playstation port over to the PC. If software is developed for the Playstation, it is quite simply made to be played on the Playstation. Everything about this port over is just absurd garbage from the first intro frame. One, the screen is awkward. Two, the game will just randomly crash while on Windows. However, thirdly and worst of all THE GAME CONTROLS LIE TO YOU ON SCREEN. If you are familiar with any of the games in this series, there are moments when you will have to randomly press a sequence of buttons when prompted on screen. HOWEVER, in this weak and absurd port over, the on screen signals HAVE NO RELATION TO ANY ACTUAL KEYBOARD OR CONTROL FUNCTION. Instead of saying, for example, "ENTER KEY!" or something simple like that, the pc version will spam "3!!" or "1 + 2!!" and the numeric keys on your keyboard actually have nothing to do with the actual controls that you need to use. Turns out that "1" actually means the enter key... such lies at such critical moments are simply intolerable. Keep in mind that it will randomly generate a set of controls so you'll have to translate and/or figure out what the game actually means instead of simply PLAYING the game. DO NOT WASTE TIME OR MONEY ON THIS PC PORT. If I even hope to have fun with RE4 I will have to spend more money on the actual real Playstation version.

This is the greatest of the series. The graphics and gameplay are second to none. The only drawback is that you can't use the mouse, but hey once you start playing this game you won't care!
Excellent console game, poor PC port

The game was written for game consoles that use gamepad type controllers. If you own a PS2 or GameCube, this is an excellent game to pick up for one of those systems. However, on the PC, it will probably cause you nothing but frustration unless you have a gamepad. Even with a gamepad, playing this style of game on your PC is going to be frustrating if you're used to mouse/keyboard first person shooters. Basically, the PC experience is disappointing.

I had never played Resident Evil 4 before getting the Wii version last week. I loved the Wii version so much that I picked up this port for the PC so that I could play it on my laptop while traveling. I've spent about 6 hours trying to play the PC version over the last few days and have determined that it is unplayable due to horrible controls. It has taken me those 6 hours to get to the same point in the game that it took me a half hour to get to on the Wii version. Playing the game with a Gamepad was slightly better than playing with just the keyboard, as was downloading an unofficial patch that enabled use of the mouse (I even tried using a hack that someone created to play the game on the PC using the Wii controller). No matter what control scheme I've tried, the lack of precision aiming and movement makes the game totally unenjoyable and frustrating. I still highly recommend the Wii version of the game, but save your money and avoid the PC version at all costs.
bad port for a decent game

Very bad PC port. Be prepared with a gamepad and some skill at manually mapping it, even then you will still need the keyboard and the movements will be clunky. Very frustrating to get killed due to the controls and not your own lack of skill

I have to agree w/ and say 'Ditto' to all the 1 star reviewers here. This was a complete rip-off from the word go. The port from console to pc must have been done within 10 minutes or something. Really Ubisoft, what vendor did you farm out this big hunk of steaming blank to? I loved Resident Evil 4 on my Playstation but my console up and died as did my Xbox eventually. I have to have a Gamepad to be able to play this at an enjoyable level? Puhleeeez; I have a zillion USB cords running everywhere, I don't want another bloody controler type device adding to that mess.

I bought this game because the pc is the best way to play a fps. This was the most disappointed i have been playing a game. Not being able to use mouse to aim is the stupidest thing i have ever heard. Im not sure what they spent all their time on when they developed this game for the pc. They spent too much time smoking weed and not enough making a game worth playing. The graphics are darker and worse than on the gamecube or ps2. There is no option to improve the graphics. Its basically the same exact options on the gamecube and ps2. Bottom Line stay away from this like the plague. Its horrible and they should pay you to play it. However, if you own a ps2 or gamecube buy this game its awesome. Just somehow everything got lost in translation when they ported this to the pc.

This is a great game. Out of the box, the graphics are pretty bad when compared with its console counterparts', but that's why UBISOFT released a patch which significantly upgrades the graphics. Secondly, there is a mod which enables mouse support.
Trust me. Buy this game, then download the patch and mouse mod. You won't regret it.

This is frankly the worst game I have ever played. Anyone who gives this higher than 2 stars has either: a)never played the pc version, b)played with a USB game controller, or c)only played the console versions (PS2, Gamecube, etc.).
This is a classic example of a console game that was ported by a low-budget Japanese company to the PC in order to bring in more dollars. There is absolutely no mouse support outside of a 3rd party mouse-hack, which only makes aiming slightly better. When gamers like myself have to turn to other gamers to make the controls better, it is a pathetic game to start with.
The "minimum system requirements" are far to low to even come close to playing the game in the lowest detail/resolution. Even their recommended system requirements might not be able to play the game in full detail.
The graphics are good but there is no "wow-effect" when it comes to textures during normal gameplay. The cutscenes are poor 640x480 resolution with no lighting effects whatsoever and short vertical white lines randomly in the picture. Think of a cutscene from a late 90s game to get the idea.
Here comes the worst part of it: the control conversion. Rather than saying "Press Shift to dodge this boulder that will kill you", the game uses the console text: "Press the 3rd button". It took me 10 tries to figure out what "1 + 3" was on the keyboard. To me it would seem easy to re-write the game code to say "Shift + Enter" instead of "1 + 3". After 3 months of release delays, I expect much better.
In conclusion, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. "Obscure" for $6 is far superior in graphics and gameplay (2 people can play). This game would be great on the PS2, but this shoddy PC version has really left a foul taste in my mouth. As of writing this review I have still not finished the game due to sheer frustration with the controls.
Creepy-and fun!

I wasn't expecting a lot from this game after learning that it was a port of a console game. Also, I hadn't played any of the past Resident Evil games. However, if you own a gamepad (especially an XBox 360 controller), Resident Evil 4 is definitely worth the price. It's a game of the horror/survival genre and packs in a lot of good scares and clever adventuring. It does have a few problems, but overall, I had a blast!
Gameplay: In a nutshell, you are a U.S. government agent sent to rescue the president's daughter from a evil cult in Europe. There are some minor intrigues going on and you'll likely get confused about whose working for whom, but for the most part this is a simple rescue/save-the-world mission. Your travels will take you through villages, an abandoned hospital, factories, sewers, a castle, and an island. The diversity of environments is actually impressive. There is some good loot to be found, but most of it is simply meant to allow you to buy better weapons from strategically placed weapons dealers. And you'll have fun enough using the weapons, trust me. With a XBox 360 gamepad, this game plays well. It's one of those games truly meant to be placed with a gamepad, thus I can excuse the lack of mouse support (though it really should have been supported).
The game offers a lot of good, creepy action, and there are no less than 10 great boss fights. Some of the fights are frustrating and will require repeated efforts. However, they are all satisfying and leave you with a sense of accomplishment when completed. The game lasted me about 30 hours (according to the in-game timer); however, it's actually longer than that if you count all of the saved games that you'll have to reload after dying (and you'll die many, many times), along with the bonus missions unlocked after completing the main game. For the bargain price of $20 or less, it's money well spent if you are a fan of adventure and/or horror games.
Graphics: This is a mixed bag. You can adjust the resolution, and the game looks very good at 1600x1200. Character models are done well, though at least 75% of the opponents you'll meet will be zombies and cultists. Most of the cutscenes are not impressive at all and were not apparently touched up as the game was being set up for the PC. Still, the graphics are immersive and set the appropriate foreboding atmosphere.
Sound: The audio is creepy when it needs to be and sedate at other times. Really nothing special. There is some music in the game, but usually it's the kind of hurried ochestral stuff that typically plays in horror movies to get your pulse up. Voices of main characters--as well as their looks--are rather juvenille, which takes some of the seriousness out of the subject matter.
Technical issues: The game comes with a thin, but functional manual. There is no tutorial level as far as I can recall, but you'll learn the controls quickly. The game did hard lock my computer about five times, requiring me to reboot my PC. I consider this a serious technical issue, in addition to the few times it crashed to desktop. Still, I could usually play at least 3 hours straight before any problems occurred. I assume a patch could fix this. The game has an auto-save system, but it works pretty decently since it saves at a lot of different checkpoints.
Replay/value: For the price that I paid for this ($17.99), the game was definitely worth the money. However, I'm not one to replay a game that will have the same story line and ending, so I didn't find much replay value here. In sum, if you like a good scare with some wild-side adventuring, Resident Evil 4 is definitely worth a try.
Pros:
+Creepy and immersive gameplay
+Great weapons, with many upgrades
+Some fun puzzles and well-done levels
+30 solid hours of gameplay at a cheap price
Cons:
-Some repetitious fighting sequences
-Some boss fights are tedious and annoying
-technical issues
-should have had mouse support
