Great Game, Great Graphics

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 10 / 11

Compaired with games of simular weight (Tekken 2, Tekken 3, Bushido Blade 2) This game ranks #1 in my book. The graphics are great and looks almost EXACTLY like Soul Edge (the arcade version of this game). Although I beat this game rather quickly, the game has loads of replayability with the Edge Master mode (search for the ultimate weapon for your character and use it in other modes), Player Vs. Player modes, Survival Mode (goal is to not get hurt and to see how many fights you can win), and Team Play Mode (play as a team against the CPU, when you are beaten your team mate takes over).

An added plus for younger people is that no blood or gore is in this game. So if you are a concerned parent, that prohibits such things from your youngster, this game offers a fighting genre without blood, guts and gore or death (says "Knockout" when you are beaten or win).

Bottem line, this game is a classic and warrents a place on any gamer's shelf that enjoys a good fighting game.

Old-School Hand-to-Hand-to-Weapon Combat

Soul Blade is Namco's PS1 translation of it's 1995 hit arcade smash Soul Edge. Definitely aimed toward fighting purists this game features warriors who fight in hand-to-hand combat. There are no fireballs or other mysterious powers. What we do have here are historically-based fighters who represent various different fighting styles dukeing it out one-on-one.

THE STORY:

Set back in history 10 fighters from around the world, for their own various reasons, set out to find the mythical blade "Soul Edge" which is rumored to have great powers.

THE GAME MODES:

Not lacking in game modes Soul Blade offers the following:

1. Arcade Mode: The arcade translation mode where the player progresses through 10 rounds of battle

2. Vs. Battle: Standard "you vs. a buddy" mode

3. Team Battle Mode: You can form you own team of Soul Edge fighters to take on a team of other Soul Edge fighters.

4. Survival Mode: It's your fighter against each successive opponent to the bitter end.

5. Time Attack Mode: See how fast you can beat the game.

6. Edge Master Mode: A really cool feature where you enter a "Story Mode" progressing across the map of the world beating the other characters in the game and earning new weapons. The catch, in each round you must master a new battle technique to overcome your opponent. A true challenge for true "Edge Masters!!"

THE CHARACTERS:

Here are the 10 Edge Warriors to choose and master in the game:

1. Heishiro Mitsurugi: Great samurai warrior!!!

2. Seung Mina: Long blade/Tae Kwon Do warrioress!!!

3. Li Long: Nunchuk-welding Chinese warrior!!!

4. Taki: Deadly yet sexy ninja warrioress!!!

5. Voldo: Freakish Italian Edward Scissorhand-like warrior.

6. Sophitia Alexandra: Virtuous Greek warrioress!!!

7. Siegfried Schtauffen: Noble Knight!!!

8. Rock: Axe-welding Barbarian!!!

9. Hwang Sung Kyung: Sword-swinging/Tae Kwon Do warrior!!!

10. Cervantes: Evil Pirate Warlord!!!

WHAT SETS IT APART:

The fact that weapons were introduced in this game truly set it apart from other fighters on the market in its time and to this day still sets it apart. The characters are more believable and it's "dueling" feature still makes a stand out from its competition.

THE VERDICT:

Overall, the lifelike battle scenes definitely make this game really fun to play with. The animation of the game, particularly the opening and ending sequences are just amazing. Again, the game's difficulty is at a happy medium. It is relatively easy to pass the game, but still challenging enough to be, well, a challenge. It is not so hard as to where it becomes frustrating. The variety of characters and fighting styles make it a pleasure to master. Also, the various game modes provide a unique gaming experience, particulary "Edge Master" Mode. Of note, this game, like Tekken, did become another franchise for Namco spawning the highly-touted sequel Soul Calibur, with more sequels in development.

Highly Recommended

My favorite Fighter

When 3D fighters first entered with Virtua Fighter, I was not impressed. Add to that the dismal nature of the Star Wars fighter and things did not look promising. But, thanks to games such as this and Tekken, the fighting genre was saved. I first played this game in the arcade and was floored. Gone were the glitching side to side movements. In were smooth animations with amazingly real movement. It translated as close to flawlessly as possible to the Playstation.
From the opening sequence to the finale, I was hooked. The graphics are amazing. The characters are very well rendered and rather well balanced. You have your constent movement, fast players as well as the guard forever and kill in one blow slow guy along with many consistent characters. My favorite character is Taki, but that's probably because she reminds me of Chung Li.
Game control is excellent. Combos rely less on stick movement than on button combinations, which makes it much easier for beginners to pick up. Throws are actually a challenge to execute, but are worth the work. The backgrounds are truly amazing and the soundtrack is something else. The tracks are very deep with what seems like full orchestration.
Of course the greatest fun is playing against other people, but the single player formats available are quite good. The Edge Master mode is somewhat RPG-like in nature and is a nice addition. My favorite mode is the team battle where your 5 take on the opponents 5.
For the price, you absolutely cannot beat this title. The gameplay is great and the controls are rather intuitive. Give the bonus of amazing graphics and sound, if you like fighting games, you'll love this one.

Great Fighting Game -- No blood or gore.

I am a concerned and involved mother of 3. I was VERY pleased to have found a game that has a good "battling" scenerio with all the action, great graphics, and variety of characters, weapons, and moves that Soul Blade has -- without the street-violence, blood, gore, and death. This is set up like a competition, in a ring, not on the streets. The whole family LOVES playing this game! We all have our fave players, fave battling weapons. I strongly approve of this game, for even my youngest Playstation player.

The Best Ever!

Hey! I'm a girl and I love this game! The only one I've seen better is the new Soulcalibre for Dreamscape! I love the action, the characters are aewsome, and the moves-WOW! The Edgemaster mode is cool, because you can win more weapons for the characters while leaning more about their history. My 2 fav characters are Mitsurugi and Seigfried (sp?) anyway! The intro movie is awesome. I love the song and the shots of Mitsurugi. If you haven't played this game yet, try it! It is The Best!

This, along with Tekken 3 make the very best fighting games ever produced, forget all that Virtua Fighter and Bushido Blade rubbish, this is where its at, all of teh grace of Tekken, minus the ridiculous weightlessness of the always disappointing Mortal Kombat series. If you like games with weapons, where you can collect more and do all kinds of cool things including Story Mode, Survival, Time, Team modes, it's all wicked and you should buy it.

A REALLY GOOD GAME

A GOOD AMOUNT OF CHARACTERS LIKE SUENG MINA, ROCK, AND HUANG. PEOPLE CAN WIN WEAPONS IN A RPG TYPE GAME AND TRANSPORT THEM TO THE V.S. MODE.

Perhaps the best PSX fighter ever.

The simple fact of the matter here is, this is a great game. Compare it with any other fighting game on the Playstation console, and Soul Blade holds its own and more. The gameplay itself is outstanding and the graphics are as good, if not better, than all of the games that appear higher on this list.

The thing that sets this game apart from the rest is the Edge Master mode. Each character in the game is given a quest to seek out the ultimate weapon, Soul Edge. Along the way the characters aquire weapons for completing missions along their given quest. Each weapon has its own attributes that help its user advance further and further. Generally, as the character gets deeper into his/her quest, the weapons become deadlier and stronger. This feature makes the game's replay value much higher than the average fighting game.

If you are not satisfied with this game (especially at this price), then maybe you should stay away from fighting games in general.

One of the best fighters of all time

Excellent graphics, superb sound track, easy control. What else can I say? From the makers of Tekken comes Soul Blade. Instead of martial arts, this game features weapons. It is superior to the ToShinDen series and rivals the Tekken series.

Although this game is a few years old, it is still one of the best fighting games. Not only will you have hours of enjoyment with your friends, but you will also play single player to get the two secret characters. But more importantly: EDGE MASTER MODE. This story mode enables you to get better weapons than your standard one. You have to win battles with certain stipulations: such as only throwing your oponent, killing 6 in a row, low energy, ring out, etc. This is a very challenging mode, but the rewards are fantastic.

This soundtrack is one of the best for any fighting game. It ranges from classical music to a techno feel to neo-Japanese. The sound effects are top-notch. You can hear sword hit sword or knunchucks hit axes.

The characters have personalities. You can choose from a goddess to a ninja to a barbarian.

If you want hours of enjoyment from a superior game on the PlayStation I would recommend this game. The only drawback- I mean ONLY drawback is that there are only 10 characters to choose from. In this day and age, there are around 20 or 30 characters in fighting games. Other than that, GET THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!
