At the time of writing, there are 45 reviews at 4 stars or greater. I bought this game based on the reviews expecting a pretty outstanding shooter. After a couple days of play I'm just not feeling it.
Firstly, there's not a lot to speak to for this game. Graphically, it's good, but not anything to write home about. It certainly shouldn't be a make or break for anyone. I did immediately notice that the font for death/kill notification and for the server list is a pain to read on a big screen from across the room. I've got perfect vision, but the color/font combination is nasty. This makes my spray and pray game a bit less effective because I will likely miss my kill message when I lob a grenade into a blind spot. That's really the only visual issue I can find.
The game is 100% player vs player combat. You can play online, or you can play with 4 of your friends in your living room or more with daisy chained playstations. There are no bots or AI of any kind. I went in knowing this so it wasn't a shock, but I still find it a little hard to wrap my head around. I find it unfathomable that I'll have a couple people over so we can play this game 2vs2 or 1vs1, because at that scale there's no real fun to be had on even the smallest maps. I find it even more unlikely that someone will pull their giant PS3 out of their entertainment center and over to my house for a PS3 Warhawk LAN party. It'd make for a nifty commercial or add campaign I suppose. The lack of so much as a basic AI to shoot at with a few friends while you knock back a couple beers feels like more than a slight oversight. It feels like task left undone.
The game play itself is... well it's an shooter with vehicles. Your soldier and your warhawk can pick up weapons to add to their arsenal from the environment. They are easy to find as they are floating above the ground and easily identifiable. Soldier gets the standard fare, the only couple you might not see in every fps is the flamethrower and the land mine. The warhawk has a variety of missiles to suit the prey you are hunting along with countermeasures. The other vehicles (tanks, jeeps) do not appear to be modifiable, and have the standard cannon and heavy machine gun respectively. Controls for the vehicles are fairly intuitive and require a very short learning curve to manage effectively.
The Warhawk is the major focus of the game. Many people find it difficult to use them lethally when they first begin playing online and many people tout a steep learning curve to be able to fly them well. I found that it was decent when I hopped in one, and with some effort I could have become dangerous. Even so, it couldn't keep my interest long enough to put the effort into upping my game.
The battle scenarios are standard fps, deathmatch/team deathmatch and capture the flag seem to be the most popular. The maps are nice, and provide lots of hiding places and cover. The environment is largely indestructible, save for a couple boxes and fuel tanks which is par for the course.
Finally, it comes with a bluetooth headphone. I haven't used it. I may at some point, but at the moment I have no urgent need to have a squeaky pre-teen spouting newfound profanity and racial slurs funneled directly into my head.
If you are looking for a console shooter on par with the online gaming experiences of something like UT or perhaps Halo for your PS3, this may be the game you have been looking for. For anyone looking for a game to play with friends and family in meatspace with some occasional online play, you'll probably want to give this one a pass.
Great game - almost....

I agree with everything positive people have said about this game. I just want to cover a few annoying things...
First, sometimes it takes me 30-40 mins to join a game - for example, it shows 8 people in with maximum of 12 - but when I try to join - it says the game is full. I wish they would adopt the Resistance model and place people in the game automatically instead of me having to scroll down and look at several hundred games trying to find one that is actually available.
Second, when a person hosting a game decides he/she doesnt wanna play anymore - it ends the game for everybody, and then see above - sometimes I have to spend another 30 mins to find the next game that is not full. Again, when the same thing happens playing Resistance - they just switch to a different server - the game doesn't end for everybody. I like that approach better.
Third, hard to find ranked games - I think in 2 weeks I've only played two of those.
And last but not least - my PS3 started to freeze pretty often - courtesy of Warhawk. I downloaded the latest firmware update, and it helped a lot, but not 100%....
All in all - this is the best PS3 game I've played yet, and I hope they will fix most of the bugs and improve the interface a bit
At this point if you're over 13, don't bother with on-line play!

I bought this game for my husband for his birthday, as he had played the other (2?) games and loved them. It was also a bonus that it came with the free headset because he had Call of Duty and plays on-line all the time. WARNING to those of you that like the original game this was based off of....it's *nothing* like that! The airplanes are very unmanueverable, and there is no "story line" part of the game.
The worst part was after taking a couple of hours to figure out the basic movements of the vehicles, my hub got online to find the game is dominated pretty much by children. I wouldn't even buy this game for the headset if I were you!
Where Are The Bots?

I knew going into this game that there would not be any bots. Unfortunately, when playing offline with a number of others, this becomes a liability, as the maps are too large to afford one to not pilot a Warhawk. Since the controls of the Warhawk don't seem that compelling to me, I'm more likely to jump into a vehicle, but again, with the maps as large as they are, no sooner do you get to an area in offline mode than you realize that the action has now moved to some other location.
If I could take the offline split-screen possibilities of Warhawk and marry them to the graphics, weapons, bots, and vehicles of UT3, I would have the perfect game in every respect. As it is I just have a game that is nothing special when my friends or my sons friends come to visit.
meh..

I don't know if the console controls limit this game or what... The graphics aren't bad, the pace is good. It seems like the game should be better to me.
This game seems like a wanna be battlefield 1942/2/2047, but in 3rd person. The controls for the planes, and all other modes really, seem very awkward and the lack of any single player tutorial creates a deterence from ever getting over the learning curve. Jumping into the game a few weeks ago was almost impossible seeing as how most other players can kill a noob in just seconds and most servers use the expansion map that costs another $8 on playstation network.
Overall, I would pass on this game if I could do it over again. However, if I were determined to get a multiplayer frag fix, I would be sure to get the version with the blutooth headset for just $20 more because it would be great for other games online.
If I were to recommend a multiplayer frag-fest for the ps3 I would name the orange box for the much faster paced team fortress 2, along with the great single player games, I enjoyed a 3 day rental of the game just for the multiplayer online content far more than the month of ownership of warhawk as far as 3rd person shooters are concerned...

Die-hard PS3 admirer here... I was excited about WarHawk until I tried to play it for the first time... the gameplay is terrible. Even if if you're a diehard war monger I don't think you'll find much to love here... don't be misled thinking its a combat flight-sim either...
Truly disappointed.
Not as good as it could be.

Pros:
1. Online Play with voice capability.
2. This is a good game and the graphics are good and match the trailer that we all saw on the PS3.
Cons:
1. There is no backstory at all.
There are red teams and blue teams, but no difference other than minor cosmetic differences.
2. You gain weapons by flying through hoops, the could have made it more interesting.

We can only guess that Sony is attempting to self destruct the PS3 and Warhawk. I turned on my PS3 tonight and I was FORCED to download and install 3, count 'em 3 separate updates just to play Warhawk. This took over an hour and is using untold space on my hard drive so I can, what was it again, oh yes, play neato looking bloo-ray movies at nifty even higher (Yes, now I can see more sweat beads!) resolution. Yes, once again Sony is simply a company that believes that constantly updating your GAME MACHINE with pointless updates is more fun then playing Unreal or COD4 or Warhawk.
You know, when you turn on an old Sega Genesis or N64, does everybody know what happens? Yes, a totally amazing thing happens. YOU PLAY A GAME! Like right away too. A PS3 is a gaming system, it is not Windows Vista. It is not a computer, it is not a bloo-ray it is a machine specifically designed to PLAY GAMES! Yes indeed, I blew-ray [$...]on a update machine. That is awesome. Now I have to go out and buy a game machine cause I apparently no longer have one.
Nice Environment but something is missing

This game really open a new kind of video game due to the multiplayer mode. The fact that you really know that your enemies or friends are really other people playing around the world makes you feel in any situation. The game has some scenarios but once you know the game; I mean playing the different modes like team deatchmatch or capture the flag it becomes boring because you can go then for medals, medals, and medals and spend days fighting to get a good score... so basically once you know the game you end it. Other thing... The connection with the servers war really annoying. I though that the cause was my connection, but COD4 just work well.
Don't waste your money

Graphics and game play are pretty sad. We played it for about 30 minutes and haven't played it again. I'd be happy to sell it. Any takers?
