You Always Remember Your First Time

This is the first Elder Scrolls game that I've played and I wish that I'd caught on sooner. The dpeth of gameplay is amazing. You want to spend your time sneaking around the city and pick-pocketing rich merchants? Fine. You'd rather save the world? You can do that too. The main game is rich and involving and can easily occupy over 100 hundred hours of gameplay. So far, the expansions have been a lot of fun too. I havn't played Shivering Isles yet, but that's only because my girlfriend is away for work and won't let me play if she's not around to watch. This game is one of the only games that I would actually go buy a brand new system just to play. Its that good.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion- Circa 2006

GOOD:
- This game literally has a huge world (and you can explore every inch of it), it rivals that of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (GTA: SA's entire world not just one city). For Example, if you went into the woods in the game and did not use a map you world get just as lost as you would in a real-world forest with no map.
- Hundreds of quests (really big and really small) to perform you can skip any you want or do them all, plus you deicide the outcome weather it be good or bad.
- Interact with NPC's, there are literally hundreds of them and they are all voiced acted and display emotions on there faces.
- A very life like world in which Police chase thieves, wives nag husbands and wolves prowl the woods looking for prey.
- Do just about anything you can think of like steal (anything), save people form gangs, fight in arena's, hunt animals, sail ships, become a vampire (pretty cool) or just hang back and do almost nothing the choice is yours.

BAD:
- This game may be way to hard for most casual gamers.
- The loading in this game is can get annoying, this game will load often and some loads (not all) take a long time. The hard drive cuts down on some loading, but it's still a pain.
- Some of the character animations especially those of your character are a little sloppy (but in 1st person you cannot see your own animations so it's not so much a problem)
- The Hit Detection (or hit boxes) sometimes doesn't work well.
- While the world is huge it's also mostly wooded forest area, which can be a little bland after a while.
- Morality seem to play little in the game in terms of your characters development, you can do evil/good act but will not really be considered evil/good in the same way that you see in Fable or Jade Empire. In the end it's more realistic but a little underwhelming.

IF IT FITS YOUR TASTE:
- A first person Swords and Sorcery RPG (Click in the left thumb stick to toggle third person mode).
- The games theme is very much close to that of the Lord of the Rings books or movie trilogy, by Peter Jackson, other similarities are found in the tabletop RPG Dungeons and Dragons.
- This is a do as you please type of RPG (like Fable or Jade Empire), this not anything like Final Fantasy, you pick the quest and you choose the outcome, that said there is little to no character identity outside of your deeds and don't expect a party of other characters who tag a long like in most other RPG's (like Final Fantasy).

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- There is downloadable content missions/quests and areas for this game out on PC and Xbox-Live. Examples being horse Armor, Spell Tomes, The Wizard's Tower, The Thieves Den, Vile Lair, The Knights of the Nine, and The Shivering Isles just to name a few.
- This is the Special Limited Edition (Xbox-360) comes with a bonus disc, which has a lengthy behind the scenes documentary, also on the disc you can view concept art work for the game, plus the limited edition comes with a small book on the history and people of the Elder Scrolls world and you get a real-to-life coin from this games world.
- The world in the game if measured in real-world miles would be about 16 miles not including underground areas like caves, crypts, basements, and bunkers, also most areas in the alternate-dimension of Oblivion are immeasurable due to the fact that they are randomly generated and huge.
- All Elder Scrolls games are first Person (the other Elder Scrolls games besides Elder Scrolls III where on the PC).
- In the game (at the main city) you will see a poster for a gladiator type of fighting arena called Arena, the poster is the same picture found on the box art for Elder Scrolls first game called Elder Scrolls: Arena.

Oblivion

Now if you haven't played one of the previous games you don't know what fun this game can bring. Let me first start off saying that on the xbox 360 console this is (LOADED) with gamerscore points 1000 to be exact and the great thing is you will have fun getting them. In the beginning of the game you can already see how sharp the graphics are and when you create your character how immersive the gameplay is. Going back to the graphics once you get out of sewers you will see how lucious and rich the enviorment is especially during the day. Another great thing about this game is the factions you can join there is the dark brotherhood the mages guild the fighters guild and the thieves guild each offering an array of special items and expiriences. And last is the new additions there is the horse the oblivion gates and of coursethe ayelid ruins and their varla and welkned stones.

I don't use the term "Instant classic" very often...

Very few games nowadays are good enough to earn that distinction. I have put nearly 100 hours into this game. Not because the game itself is that long, but because there are so many things to keep you occupied without even starting the main quest. This game is absolutely beautiful. It is one of the few titles on Xbox 360 that truly look 'next gen'. It is also one of the very few 360 titles I consider worth every penny of its cost. This is a long game, and long games give you better value for your money spent.

There are a few gripes I have about the xbox 360 version of the game, so I'll go ahead and get those out of the way. I have not played the PC version so some of these may exist on that platform as well.

1. Graphics sometimes "pop in", meaning that trees, mountains, etc will spontaneously appear in the distance. Items like grass, rocks, etc will appear randomly up close. This is worse while riding a horse. This is most likely due to the limitations of the Xbox 360, and not sloppy programming. I find it easy to look past, others may not.

2. No modding potential. We are limited to what Bethesda provides via Xbox Live (and there have been some good quests released - Mehrune's Razor is completely worth the money). Because of this fact, I will be purchasing the PC version when it becomes a value title.

3. The radiant AI that was so highly touted during the game's development is not as groundbreaking as I thought it would be. Sure, NPC's have a schedule and tasks to complete, but it is nowhere near as evident as it was in the demo videos shown during development. Still, a step above anything else I have played thus far.

4. Framerate slowdown. Again, I'm 99% certain this is due to the limitations of the console, and not the game itself.

5. While the voice acting is good, I think only 4-5 people actually provided voiceovers for the NPC's. I would have liked to see more variety in both voice and content. I applaud the effort to have every line of spoken text in the game be spoken by an actual human being. It is said in the documentary that half of the DVD contains nothing but recorded dialogue.

Now for what I like.

1. Dungeons. Lots of them. Just as fun to ramble through the tenth time as the first.

2. The scope of the game is grand, and there is ALWAYS something to do. Don't feel pressured to finish the game. You play it how YOU want to. I personally don't care if I ever finish the main quest, because I'm just having so much fun running around exploring and doing side quests.

3. Continuing the tradition of earlier Elder Scrolls games, you are able to enchant weaponry and armor, and create your own spells. I find this is an extremely nice feature in the game.

4. Enemy scaling. As you progress and gain levels, your foes also get tougher. This makes for an even challenge throughout the entire game. No leveling up to 99 and decimating everything in your path in this one.

5. Story. Most of us play these types of games for the story, and there is no lack of it here. In addition to progressing through the game via quests, you can also read lore from the various books scattered throughout the world.

6. Collector's Edition. I'm an absolute sucker for collector editions of games. However, some companies have begun to take advantage of this and offer a collector's edition that really isn't worth the extra 10 dollars. They just throw a few development videos on there, mark the price up, and suckers buy it (I'm looking at you Perfect Dark Zero, Madden 2007, etc). Oblivion's release reminds me of the old Ultima games, where it seems they would absolutely stuff the box full of nifty extras. This one comes with a 'pocket guide' to Tamriel, a making of DVD, and a replica Septim coin, which I feel is a nice touch. I would have LOVED to see a cloth map included with the collectors edition, but I guess you can't have everything.

Bethesda has created a next generation classic. You can see the staff's dedication to detail and excellence around every corner. I don't think any game to this point has so accurately depicted forestry the way Oblivion has. If you own an Xbox 360 or a moderately up to date PC, you must own this title. I have been playing games since I was four years old, starting on an Atari 800xl, and this game definitely makes it into my top ten favorite games of all time. Definitely an instant classic.

I would also highly recommend the strategy guide. It is very thorough and helpful. It is one of the best written guides I have seen in a long time.

When i first got this game i bought other games with it and thought hmmmmmmmmmmmmm its not that great, but when i finished those games fast i was pissed off, i played it like an hour and thought it was bad, but i continued playing and i am addicted, this game has no end!! i hardly get sleep when i play it, so many things you can do and even if you do finish it, i garuntee you will play it again, each charecter you create from a certain race has certain charectaristics and people in the game react differently to it, its just hard to explain, get this game and it will suck the first two hours but then your hooked!

This game eventually gets old...

I loved this game and I have about 200 hours into it now. Although a few months ago I kind of got sick of it. The combat system is great and everything else in it is great too. As I said, it just gets old after 3 or 4 months. So enjoy it! For a while... Oh yeah, and if you have it for your PC remember to have a really good computer and video card!

Seems like a good game... but just not my style.

I bought this game because it has a lot of good reviews. But after playing it for a couple of hours, I got tired of it. It does not have a lot of action and RPG is not really my style. Only buy this game if you truly like Role Playing Games.
The Collector's Edition comes with some cool stuff. If your mind is set in purchasing this game, definately get the Collector's Edition, the extras are worth it!

Oh, how I love Oblivion!

This game got me into the gamer world. I spent nearly all my summer last year in "Cyrodil". The graphics are beyond impressive and the level of game play is unbelievable. You get the option of playing with a female character, which was so nice. I fell in love with all the little ingredients...like the grapes and apples...pumpkins and lavender sprigs! I highly recommend this game for anyone who doesn't like games. You will be damn surprised at the level of enjoyment that can be found running around the vast world. On the other hand, you do need a lot of time to wait for the loading screen. So be prepared.

WOW when I first saw this game on the market i was skeptick of the first person fighting and everything but i went ahead and bought and did it change me. Me never being much of an rpger more of the run and gun kinda player but this game has it all. you can go anywere do anything. yeah i dont like the whole iam in the middle of the woods and kill some civilian and then when i go to a town bam i get thrown out of jail and lose my stolen goods. but there are always minor flaws in every game. the?envirement has never felt so alive the animals run away if you come to close the wolfs and other sort of dangerous animals will atack you to the death. if a civilian attacks you you can ask them to stop and they will sometimes stop. I joined the thieves guild then i got kicked out because i stoll from another member. i have pickpocketed stuff stole things from the watch towers gotten into fights with bandits on the road i even trecked from one side of the map to the other off the roads just straight across and saw some really cool stuff. killed a civilian and joined theblackbrotherhood stole a horse then ran some more by the time i got to the other side i was amazed at how long it took me. This is a really good game to buy.

IF a friend or somebody says it looks gay or something get it anyways it will CHANGE THEM AND THEY TO WILL BE ADDICTED TO IT thats how good it is.
