HORRIBLE!!!!

This game is horrible, and is an embarrassment to EA's entourage of software. It should be banned from shelves, and burnt as a celebration for those who were about to waist their money. !!!!!

My Opinion = Two Thumbs Down!

I purchased this game to add to the racing fun of the GT3 bundle with my PS2. I was sorely dissapointed with F1 from the graphics to the game play. First I thought it was just GT3 overshadowing the game but after time I realized that in my opinion the game is not worth keeping. Sold it on Ebay for cheap.

I have to agree with nismofreak. I am a die hard F1 fan, I have every F1 game made for playstation. The one for PSX to me plays better. You can see other drivers qualify and also see their split times. In this all that happens is the qualifying times show up. The grafics are outstanding but thats it. The engine noise is annoying, gear selection is poor. They also really need blow by blow commentary. this is what Psygnosis has in their F1 that makes it more fun. "Rent first then but."

Do not buy!

I cannot believe the reviews of this game! For one, the PSX version of the game is so much better in terms of game play. I must admit that the PS2 graphics are stunning but c'mon! There is more to a game than just good looks.

For one, taking the BMW-Williams, the car does not have the real top speed of the real F1 car. And when qualifying, you are not able to advance the time. Am I expected to sit infront of the game for an actual hour??? Also, you are unable to watch the competition's lap time. Then, EA removes the level of modification allowed on the car. In the PSX version, you can control the amount of steering lock. That is now removed. For me to negotiate a sweeper, I have to induce lift throttle oversteer. And that, my friends, is a bunch o' BS! This game is not a similation. It is now a not so fun and boring arcade game! I regret buying this game and in the process of trying to sell it! I will stick to playing the PSX version on my PS2 console!

Neither Simulation nor Arcade

This is an average F1 game, at best. The problem for those of us looking for an F1 sim is that the game plays like an arcade. However, for those looking for an arcade game, this game may be a little too much "sim." It's like EA couldn't figure out what they wanted from this game.

A large positive are the very cool pit stop & stop-and-go penalty visuals. On the stop-and-go penalties, you can actually see the pit crew checking the car for damage w/o touching it (per FIA rules). Very cool. However, it would be nice if there is some variability to the duration of each pit stop, which would be more realistic. Also it would be nice if the game displayed a timer to show how long each pitstop takes.

However, there are many, many unrealistic characteristics in this game. First and foremost is the fact that the lap times in this game are usually ~7-12 SECONDS faster that what was possible during the 2000 season.

The braking, acceleration, and direction controls could be improved substantially if EA took advantage of the analog controls on the PS2 controller... unfortuantely braking and acceleration are basically either on (full brake/throttle) or off (no brake/throttle).

Also, you can't really play the game with full damage ability because the other cars compeletely lack any intelligence, so they continually run into you. Even the backmarkers run into you! In addition, it seems like your car will immediately have damage, but the computer driver will have no problems, and will keep going. Speaking of the computer drivers, on some corners, they practically come to a stop, while they take others at speeds which are physically impossible.

Some other problems: no yellow flags and/or safety car; weather isn't variable during a race; no commentary during qualifying or race (it would be great to have the SpeedVision commentators in this game, a la Madden football); can't compare sector times with other cars (in general qualifying needs substantial improvement); no pit conversations, frame rates drop quite a bit when there are many cars on track, etc, etc, etc.

Overall, a pretty poor effort by EA. Unfortunately, this is the only game in town (er... country). Hopefully EA will fix these problems with the next release, or perhaps Sony will import Formula One 2001 to the US.

Disappointing

I have played F1 simulations of eidos interactive in my PC.I bought the PS2 mainly to play this F1 game. The graphics are very good and it seems weirdly real in cockpit view. Unfortunately graphics is the only plus for this game. The gameplay is really very disappointing. There is not even a REARVIEW mirrow..How am i supposed to block somebody trying to pass me ???? There is very little talk from the pit ..and i have to wait for the TV display (which appears occassionally)to know whether somebody's gaining on me or not ...or where my championship contender is!!!! Even psygonesis PSX game had better gameplay. If somebody is planning on buying this game..my advice is wait for F1 2002..maybe EAsports will come up with something better. ppl who are planning to buy PS2 for playing F1 sims..stick to ur PC.

OK, but leaves room for improvement

The game offers stunning graphics and sound. You find all the cars, track and teams/drivers of the 2000 season. The player can select from single races, championship or arcade play modes. All in all I enjoy playing the game but I just wish it would be closer to reality in some aspects. The top speed is too low no matter how you set the car up you rarely get 300km/h. Also the gear box ratios are questionable: e.g. 1st takes to 160km/h. The speed you take through corners is mostly too high, so you can go flat out in 7th through the chicanes in Monza, Hockenheim or Spa. The qualifying time table only shows the total lap time. Those the FIA offers show sector times so you could check how you do in comparison with other drivers and learn about their setup. The qualifying mode definitely lacks a FastForward mode, the fact that tracks get faster is ignored. The warm-up is too long (60min). Also I wish the weather would change and not stay consistent throughout the whole race. If you select tire wear you have to pit every 8 or 9 laps to replace them. I think the technical basis of the game is well executed but it could be a lot better if some of those details were better solved.

Pretty good for F1 fans, but there are better driving games.

I got this game when I first got my PS2. Now, I'm sure I liked this game more than most and forgave it for its flaws because I'm such a F1 fan. It is a fun game and the tracks are very realistic (when watching an F1 race I would know the track perfectly when watching an in-car shot after playing the track on this game). The graphics are nice as well. The crashes are a little absurd, but amusing nonetheless. I do say the Gran Turismo 3 is the best driving game on the PS2 or any other system.

(...)Anyway, if this gets through... Grand Prix 3 and the Thrustmaster on a PC makes for the best racing/driving sim game I've ever played. See my reviews on amazon for those items as well.

Best F1 game yet. Only thing missing is the commentary during the race. It gets a little boring doing a full race distance at Hokkenheim.

Another half-baked PS2 game

Yeah, the graphics on this game are great, but that should be par for the course on a PS2. The graphics are smooth, but I swear there is less on the screen than in F1 2000 for the PS1. That was a great game and pushed me to play a few full seasons, but is suffered from being too easy. When I heard that F1 200 Champ used AI to vary the difficulty resulting in longer game play appeal, I was psyched - so I bought a PS2 and bought this game. Big mistake - this F1 2000 Champ edition is not in the least bit related to it's cousin on the PS1. The PS2 game is either too easy or way too hard. The cars don't go as fast, there's no commentary, the opponent-AI is terrible, there are no frills or nice effects as in the PS1 version, and worse of all -the game is riddled with bugs. Yes bugs. For instance, imagine how frustrating it is to come out of the pits after 8 laps to find you're stuck in 1st gear for the rest of the race - not even going back to the pits will help. Or, when you start a flying lap, it places you in 1st gear at 160 mph - so you spin out and hit the barrier every time. HUGE BUGS! I can't believe that EA stooped so low as to push this out unfinished, just to cash in being the only F1 racer on this console!

All that said, the physics on the car feel great - the best I've ever seen - it's just a shame that the rest of the game doesn't stand up to allow you to enjoy them in a full race.

- and no, you can't change the wheel lock (well I can't find that option) :)
