On the surface, THPS4 seems like a perfect sequel to a series widely regarded by skaters and non-skaters alike as one of the best in all of gaming. There's a huge slew of changes to the formula that aren't really evolutions in the vein of the revert and manual, but slight touch-ups on a formula that nears perfection. No longer do you have to repeat the same goals with all skaters: completing a goal with one pro completes it with all. Meanwhile, pro challenges, which are goals specific to each skater, will ensure you take all the skaters for a spin. Add in the elimination of the dreaded clock, an improved create-a-skater mode, and one of the best soundtracks in recent history, and this game seems like a sure bet, right? Well, yes, but it's not as great as all the hype and praise may lead you to believe. The biggest problem with Tony 4 is that the career mode, with 190 goals, is a great evolutionary step in the way of Aggressive Inline, but many of the goals have little to nothing to do with what made the series great to begin with. While the other 3 Hawks were more or less action games, this one seems more like a "sit back, explore, chill" kind of thing. It's still a good game, but I went in expecting a continuation of the series, and found instead a title that seems almost like a different one all together. One more thing of note is the intro of the spine transfer: there's no real use for it, and it seems like the move was thrown in along the "we have to have a new move in this sequel, too" line of thinking. Since this game is multiplatform, the differences should be discussed: While XBox does have cleaner graphics and custom soundtracks, the PS2 features tighter control and online play. It's up to you to decide which of these features is most important. No matter what version of the game you opt to buy, THPS 4 is a worthy sequel to a series that has stood the test of time. It just happens to be a lot different from the other entries.

Really big improvement over the last

The levels are awesome and so are the graphics. Better goal set up and the goals are funner and the minigames are addicting. Very unrealistic, but it wouldn't be fun if it was realistic. Very hard and the additions make the game worth a look even if you hated the first 3. good sound trak. I hate that you have to find the people to do their goals.

A Great Game

This one is even better than the others, though I love THPS3. It's great with the unlimited free skate time, and new innovative missions to complete. My roommates are totally addicted. Make sure you have a memory card.

Now, let me tell you that this game couldn't get any better! The graphics are amazing and the gameplay is awesome! It's different then all of the other games in the Tony Hawk series because of a major change: You don't go against the clock; you skate around accepting challenges from people while getting money and stat points. And as you finish more challenges, you gain more respect. Then, you start to do pro challenges while getting even more money!

Now, there still is a shop that you can buy things from. That hasn't changed. You can buy decks (which are really cheap), secret characers, two secret levels, and other stuff. You can also buy creat-a-skater clothing and accessories. And that lets you make characers that you had to win to get in the other Tony Hawk games, such as Officer Dick! Well, that's all that I want you to know. Everything else is what you're going to have to find out when you play the game!

Great Game

Fans of the Tony Hawk series will love it. Great graphics and levels. For instance, skate through a college, a jail, or create your own skate park and have some fun! The special tricks are incredible, and so are the regular tricks. I love tweaking around with the tricks until I find the perfect ones for each skater. This game is awesome!

Change is not always a good thing.......

Let me start off by saying that I love tony hawk video games. Ever since the first came out i had practiced at it and got really good. I had tony hawk 2 and 3 on reserve and got them the day they came out. It got better and better. Then came 4.... Well the graphics are good, but that is NOT everyting. I hate the fact that there is no two minute runs. I like that because i would love to try getting as many objectives done in the time given and even if i did no objectives, i would love getting a high score. But in this one u can do all the tricks u want and it will not matter. And u have to find people to do your objectives. And i heard it was rediculously hard at some points. A challenge is good, but a game like this is about having fun getting high scores and opening cheats and hidden characters, not getting pissed off at a dumb objective. My advice, if u have a ps2,gc,or xbox buy tony hawk 3, u will love it. And if u have an older system, then buy tony hawk 2. Don't waste time buying tony hawk 4, its not worth it.

as good as it gets

This game is off the charts, go get it right now. If you enjoyed the previous titles in this series even just slightly, then you will love Hawk 4, it is just that simple.

The levels are HUGE, will all types of stuff to skate...rails, ledges, cars, rooftops, ramps, construction equipment, etc. The graphics and smooth play have been stepped up even more. The career mode is cooler now b/c of the interaction and lack of a timer running on you all the time.

Alcatraz is one of the levels and it is OFF THE MEAT RACK. Anyway, the only beef I have not being able to tell where a level "ends", hence, you go off screen and lose the combo you were pulling. That is very frustrating; you should just be directed back towards the "level" instead of being penalized.

Very cool game, and I'm not a skater. A little frustrating at first, but you'll be doing fine in no time. Recommended.

... Now if I was a normal person, I would hate this game for two reasons. One, it is hard! And two, the music is bad. I mean, I cant stand rap at all, and it makes up nearly three quarters of the sound track. I have never liked the music in this series and I know that many other gamers hate it too! C'mon admit it.You hate it! ... Turn down the music and crank up your stereo. Its time to find SKATE!

I can not stop praising this game!

I have been an avid fan of extreme sports for most of my life, and I know what I am talking about when I say, "THPS 4 is the best extreme sports game ever created!!!!!" The graphics are so incredibly real it's like you are riding the board yourself. The sound track rocks, and if by some minute chance you don't like it, you can change it easily. Yeah, I know, the game costs like $55 but I would rebuy it @ $100 if I had to. Seriously. I know the game can get hard, but just go to the Options menu in the starting menu, go to Cheats, enter watch_me_xplode, start a game, pause it, go to Options, go to Unlock Cheats, and at and near the bottom are all of the technical cheats. Toggle and Untoggle them as you like.
