Good concept falls short with redundant gameplay

I heard this was a good game, and it does have promise. Upon reading some of the reviews here, however, I am wondering if some of the reviewers were playing a different game than I was. The graphics are a bit better than par for the course, I do like the detailed sky scenes with the planets and all that stuff. The controls are without a doubt the games strong point, with Arokh and Rynn being easy to expertly maneuver in combat and other tasks. The story is quite lame, however, as are the "bad guys." The Desert Lords never captured my imagination and several of the bosses are no more difficult to defeat than the regular baddies in this offering. Also, almost each dungeon looks similar and there's only a handful of different enemies in the entire game. The villagers are no better, with several people in each town being the same character model. Sure the landscapes are pretty, but this laughable feature took away from the game. The ending was rather weak, and I had no desire to play it again. Like I said, the graphics are decent and the controls outstanding, with some good ideas for a game, but overall it has several flaws that detract from the entire package....

A Fantastic Gaming Experience

"Drakan: The Order of the Flame" was a surprisingly solid and enjoyable PC title when it was released several years ago. Despite this, it contained some very harmful flaws. For starters, the plotline never lived up to its potential, and the climax was a severe disappointment. The dungeons began to grow repetitive after several hours with the game, and the combat, while initially fun, became tedious. "Drakan: The Ancients' Gates," the Playstation 2 sequel, addresses some of these issues, with varying degrees of success. The game still suffers from repetitive dungeon crawls (that take place in one of two environments; dingy caverns or stone ruins). The graphics, however, are spectacular - particularly out of doors. The combat remains very enjoyable, if a bit overplayed. New RPG elements have been injected to liven things up, and new character voice-overs help to enhance Rynn's personality (which was lacking the first time around). The ending, while not as crippling as that in the original game (which was so bad, in fact, that it darkened the overall gaming experience), is still a tad lackluster, and the story never truly hits its stride. Despite these niggles, however, "The Ancients' Gates" is an action-packed fantasy ride for the PS2 that should NOT be missed. I can only hope that a 3rd game is made (something implied by the ending), and that it further improves this charming formula.

So good I was sad when I beat it.

This game is addictive and incredibly fun. The dragon riding is a one of kind thing for video games and it's awesome! There are several levels with side quests that keep you occupied for a long, enjoyable time. You choose from a variety of weapons and magic spells and cool things happen when you use them in battle against an array of assailants. I definately consider this a must have game if you own a PS2.

Fantasy spree!!

I love dragons Griffiuns ect.So I thought I'd try this game out,IT ROCKS!The fighting is awsome, the graphics are great, and the controlling is outstanding.

The plot is that Dessert Lords are tring to take over, and kill off man kind. But Rynn and Arokh are the olny things standing in their way. What your supposed to do, is try and open all four Dragon Gates to awaken the Mother Dragon, awaken the Spirit Dragons, and reastore the Order of the Flame.Sonds easy?NOT!There are many challenges along the way like the Flesh Meage, grouchy wizards who need a MILLONE diffrent things, uppset (and armed)dead, Yetis, a grull named Bone Grinder, a two headed serpent, golems, enemey dragons, and so much more!

The olny down sides are, some times Arokh can be pretty brain dead.Your really in the dark about your apponents health so it seams like forever till they die(but thats a good challenge). When you finally beat all of it, you can't go back to the town or anything. And the bigest problem is THERE ISN'T A SEQUEL!!!

I am in absolute gaming heaven!

Good gawd, where do I start? Though Drakan has its flaws here and there, I am blown away by this game. I'm pretty much a "simpleton" when it comes to games, I like fairly easy, fun, and enjoyable characters (like in the Sonic games), and the more fun ya add, the more I love your game.
So when you bring in one very crucial and major FUN part in this game, you have me riding on dragon-shaped clouds.
What I'm trying to say is...this game rocks and rocks bigtime for one single reason... AROKH. Whoever designed this game, I want to run up to them and hug them insanely. The BRILLIANT design team not only came up with huge and wonderfully realistic worlds, they said, "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if Rynn was bonded to a dragon but not only that, you could fly around the game on him?" HELL YEAH. You makers of this game are so friggin' cool, I seriously am gonna right a sweet letter and send it your way. I have never been happier with spending $10 measly bucks in my life for a nice used copy of this game.
I think I got a new slimmer PS2 system (instead of Gamecube, and I SO do not regret that decision) JUST so I could have Drakan, my favorite game ever. You could only make it better if you left out the human characters as players and made it entirely dragon-based. I actually get bummed that at times I have to leave Arokh's awesome presence and go battle by myself as Rynn. The first part of the game annoyed me because I had to go complete a quest in order to get Arokh. But man, was it WORTH it. I kid you not, I play this game for 30 minutes sometimes just flying around on Arokh, doing aerial loops, spewing fireballs, landing, crunching enemies with his teeth...gawd this game is so freaking awesome.

THANK YOU SURREAL!!

Despite a few shortcomings, Drakan manages to shine

When I heard there was a sequel for the outstanding PC game Drakan I knew I had to have it. When I started playing, one thing I noticed right off the bat was the lack of inventory space. If you're a pack rat like myself, this gets annoying very quickly. Due to small inventory space, I found myself stashing items in key locations that I planned to revisit later. In one such instance, the items were nowhere to be found when I returned. The game engine was also a little buggy, with Rynn actually getting stuck beyond help at one or two points when rapidly switching to inventory mode and back. I had to resort to a reboot.
The level design, on the other hand, is outstanding with huge levels that flow into one another very smoothly. A minor drawback - I would have liked to more easily revisit certain parts of the world map. Some parts were actually impossible to revisit. The controls and camera movement were very natural for the most part, but became a bit tricky when trying to aim magical attacks.
It was obvious that the game designers came from a PC background where a game can be released with some minor issues and then a few weeks later a patch is released with the final polish. This doesn't work as well on a console.
On the whole, this was an outstanding game. Don't let these few problems deter you from experiencing what for me was upwards of 40 hours of entertainment.

OK game, but there are far better.....

This game is somewhat fun... You play as a redhead with a sword and huge knockers, as opposed to the usual big greasy armored dude you see in these types of games. There are plenty of quests and hidden features, and a nice bonus of blowing stuff up as a fire-breathing dragon.

A couple things keep the game from being more than mediocre. The combat can get repetitive-- swordplay is usually reduced to parry, attack, parry, attack; sniping with the bow gets old as the enemies are usually too stupid to realize they are being shot with arrows; and all the magic spells are so powerful that they unbalance the game (time slow and fear especially). The story is lame and predictable, and the dragon has horrible voice acting.

The most fun and challenge comes from riding the dragon: the game then turns to a kind of fantasy flying shooter. You battle other dragons, catapults, spellcasters, and even a huge two-headed monster at various points when you are in the open air. Plus the outdoor areas are way bigger. If the entire game was comprised of these outdoor areas and huge rolling landscapes, it might have been something special.

Barrel roll into fun... just for starters

The game takes a little practice, went running about, swashing, rolling and hacking until I was comfortable fighting Rynn, and another 20 minutes just being acrobatic on Arokh (come on, lets power dive into an Immelman!) Much more liberating than Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance, which railroaded you into one path. Here, you can wander about the map, looking into an ancient library with a skeletal problem, or find the missing wife of a farmer. Good characters, with fun dialog (well if it isn't Miss. Bloodbath) and the chance to ride a dragon and have him torch your enemies from afar (oh, you've got a big axe, do you? Well I've got a big dragon sitting over your head.)
Four stars becase of the constant need to repair eqipment that slow degrades with use. (It was a cool sword, now it's just an inventory item.)

This is a fun game and challenging

I just finshed this game and I must say it was really enjoyable.Great graphics and game play. It's like playing a role playing, fighting and aerial combat game all in one package. The backgrounds and scenery are wonderful and you can find yourself getting lost in this vast world. Trying to figure out where to go and what quest to finish next can be very challenging. Flying the Dragon Aroch is incredible and the warrior Rynn is fun to play. Highly reccomended.

great game
