I played the demo for Drakan: The Ancients' Gates and I liked it. You fly on Arokh, you collect treasure, the graphics are amazing, and Rynn can attack enemies using an axe, bow and arrow, or spells. Rynn replenishes her health with spells also. When it comes out, give it a shot and see what you think.

Drakan is one of the top 10 PS2 games of all time. The controls are really tight when controlling both Arokh and Rynn. Speaking of Rynn she is so hot. She is definately one of the best characters in video game history. Rynn kicks Lara's b[ottom]!!! I seriously hope they make Drakan into a movie.
If Rynn wasn't enough Arokh is by far the coolest side kick of game/entertainment history. Flying on Arokh's back is a blast. There's nothing like blasting orcs and other baddies from the sky.
When running on the ground theres tons of detail, flowers, rocks and even grass.
The levels are absolutely huge! If you are sick of 10 hour games Drakan is the game for you.
If you are into games this is a must buy!

Drakan:Ancients Gates absolutely rocks! The player Rynn is simple to control and has an enormous depth. She can use hand-to-hand weapons, a bow and magic. The dragon Arokh totally rocks also! Flying around blowing stuff away is really fun. I had trouble targeting at first, but if you lock onto a target using R2 it is really simple. Graphically, the game looks like is running at a higher resolution than any of my other PS2 games. The special effects are really good. Overall, Drakan looks like it will be a classic. A must-buy.

This is hands down the best action/rpg/adventure game on the PS2. A friend of mine works at a game magazine and let me play the review code of the game and I have to say this is one of the best games for the PS2.
The graphics are great. Especially when on the dragon. Ground combat is fun and challeging. The controls work for both Rynn and Arokh.
The one down side is that this game takes a while to get into which will probably turn a lot of people off at first. The demo is not indicitive of how cool the real game is.

I have almost completed this game. I have enjoyed the game so very much that I feel inclined to write a review. If you like a good medieval genre RPG that takes you to many different lands while completing many different quests, you should be very happy with Drakan for PS2. The graphics are extremely rich and pleasing to the eyes. The designers went out of their way to add the little things like flowers and streams that add to the overall realistic environment. The sound effects and music are adequate enough as well. There is a large assortment of weapons and magic spells that can be acquired, for a price of course. I also like how you are able to save at any point in the game without having to find a specific save spot. The heroine of this RPG can certainly grow on you and her dragon Arokh, is fun to fly and fight with. The people that create these games amaze me. I hope they choose to continue Rynn's adventures. If so, I will be sure to buy the game. I am sure to use Drakan as a benchmark for future RPG game selection.

This game starts off under the guise of and innovative and entertaining fantasy based adventure/rpg. Having never played the original, I was a little in the dark about the story, but the history is fairly intersting even though the main plot is kind of thin. The gameplay is fluid and you definately get a good assortment of moves to dispatch your enemies with. The level progression system is definatively Diablo inspired. Now for what's wrong with the game. For starters, your max level is 9. Which for any adventure/rpg title is very disappointing on more than one count. Case in point, you cannot max out all of your stats at level 9, which means you must allocate points to only the skills you want to really beef up. Which wouldn't be terrible if A) You were actually aware that you had to do this, and B) If the game didn't force you to use all of your potential skills. So what you end up having instead of a customizable character whom you can choose to make a fighter or a spellcaster, etc. you are forced to have a little of everything, creating an overall mediocre character. My second complaint, although not as bad as the first, is that the difficulty of the game only increases in the number of monsters you must kill later on. So instead of throwing some engrossing puzzles at you, you end up just hacking your way through the last few levels of the game. If they ever make another sequel, I hope they improve on these flaws, because the game does have a solid foundation, but in the end, I was disappointed.
Drakan: the Ancients' Glitch

As a previous reviewer mentioned, there is a major glitch in this game. Your dragon can completely disappear. However, unlike the other reviewer, my dragon disappeared in front of my eyes never to be seen again. I called him, he came, I dispatched a monster, and the dragon was gone. There was no tunnel involved, and no way to get him back. How did this game ever hit the shelves?
Play at your own risk. I know I'm done with it.

I had my doubts about this game when my mother told me about it. Being a 20 year old gamer, I am not easily impressed. This is a fantastic game for anyone. What really got my attention was that you can get lost just walking around (one minute you know where you are at and the next you dont know how to get back to a village). The combat isn't to complex, and with a little practice and attention to detail those hard to kill "bosses" can be beaten easily. The game is all about solving puzzles which explains how you can find much much easier ways to kill opponents. If you are sick of games like 007 Agent under fire that you can beat in 1 or 2 days, then this is the game for you. You can spend a whole day alone just walking around finding weapons and increasing your funds to buy better weapons or magic. You buy weapons from blacksmiths located around the game, some have better equipment (armor and shields) and weapons than the others. You earn skill points by engaging in combat which you can use to increase skill in melee (sword, axe, etc.), archery, and magic. Increasing skill points allows you to use stronger weapons with greater damage points (trust me you WILL need it!!). Enemies start out fairly easy but get harder as you find your way through the game. Overall this is an excellent game. If you are sick of fighting your way from point A to point B, try this game which creates a perfect mixture of combat and puzzles to keep you addicted for days on end. Personally, I couldnt put the game down and didnt get to sleep until 6:00 am. Try it, you wont be dissapointed!
Bugs-But Great Game

Yes, this game is great, yes I spent hours on it, but YES there are A LOT of bugs. Everything from critters that you have to kill being "lost" in mountains or hills, to losing your dragon, to completing a quest and the fact that you completed the quest never registering to the game. All of these can take place in the first minute or the last minute of the game. Thus loosing HOURS and having to replay or burn the game. It is a shame that something with this much potential was sped through the process.
Very Impressive

Just browsing through some game titles, I noticed this one. I had never heard of it, but the reviews sounded pretty promising so I decided to get the game.
The game started off with storybook pictures and a deep voice telling a tale as the pages flipped along(Refreshing since I haven't seen that in a while). After several hours I decided that the reviewers hadn't lied and that this was truly worth my buy.
Rynn, your main character is bonded with a dragon of The Order of the Flame, Arohk. When you see and hear Rynn, you can't help but think of a medieval Lara Croft(No complaints here). Together, and with enough practice on your part, the two make almost an invincible team that can fight off any enemy. On land, Rynn makes use of the sword(and many other hand weapons), the bow and magic. Each category of combat makes use of skill points which result from killing enemies. The combat is actually quite well done in this game. Weapon durability has been added in as well. Rynn can do several combos for more devastating damage when she's on the offensive. You're also able to lock onto your enemies. When she's on the defensive, run, roll, back flip, parry and block with a shield are all skills that will save her life. With her magic, you'll be able to incinerate, freeze, impale or terrify your enemies(There's still more magic to be revealed and multiple spells can be used at once). With Arohk, you'll battle other dragons with breathes of fire, ice, lightening, sound and darkness. Imagine flying through the stormy rain and swooping towards the ground with catapults, ballistae and enemy arrows all firing towards you while you scatter the enemy's blood and ashes with fire and sonic waves. Arohk even attacks when Rynn is on the foot! Enemies include, Trogs, Wartoks, Dragons, the Undead, insane mages and many more.
The controls for everything are very easy to learn and can even be slightly modified. The music plays along very well and can add to the excitement. The dialogue is credible, but many characters have the same tone. Some people you meet will talk of everyday occurrences, others will rant about what Rynn is . . . or ISN'T wearing and some will reveal side quests for you. Side quests here are somewhat essential since they are your main opportunities for money, experience and hidden items(But they're not annoying at all).
Graphics are some of the best I've seen on the PS2 yet. From the very beginning, the environments looked so lush, vast and real. The overall world is actually quite large, but travel by dragon makes it MUCH easier.
The storyline sounded very original to me, but didn't quite capture me. Nonetheless, the experience was awesome. My only complaint would have to be the population. While not exactly scarce, a greater population would have much better complimented the amount of detail put into to the settings. Still this one's definitely worth your time, whether abundant or scarce since you can save at any time. I recommend any RPG Gamer to give this one a try as it truly is an underrated game for the PS2. Have fun!
