Could've been better

The biggest name in skateboarding takes a back seat to a nation full of wannabes in Tony Hawk's Underground-and the results represent a fresh start for the series. The game's centerpiece story mode stars you as an unknown skater who gets the chance to live the scrub-to-am-to-pro dream. It's a classic tale of opportunities, power, and betrayal among friends-just like Julius Caesar or Showgirls. Your personal quest takes you from New Jersey to various spots around the globe, where you'll be meet pros like Hawk and Steve Burnquist while doing burly tricks...and much more (no spoilers here). Some of the missions are a little hokey, and while the driving sequences do break things up a bit, they feel a little forced-but the satisfying story mode is a big improvement on THPS's structure. The story ramps up the difficulty gradually, so you build skills as you go, but there are now four difficulty levels, making THUG totally accessible to newbies.
When you finish the story, you can create almost everything yourself-skater, deck, tricks, levels, even level goals. PS2 owners get two major perks: They can map their own photo directly onto a player's face (very easy, very cool), and they can trade all of the above while skating online. The control and gameplay feel as tight as ever; old vets can drop in with ease. The new mechanics this time are wallpushes as well as getting off the board, running on foot, and climbing ledges. Jumping off the board (and keeping a combo going) expands your trick lines immensely, but it's just tricky enough to get on your nerves. It's easier on the PS2 than on the Xbox (mapped to the Black button), but it ultimately feels like one priority too many. Graphically, the game's no slouch; The Xbox version looks a hair prettier than the PS2, but the levels are huge and richly detailed on both systems, and linking animations are noticeably improved. Expressive voice acting and an enormous 75-song soundtrack featuring NOFX, Jurassic 5, and Jane's Addiction (the Xbox also supports custom tunes) make this the best audio experience in the series. The PS2's online elements give it an edge, but skate fans on any platform-including those who have strayed from the franchise in recent years-should buy Underground. The new name signals a new experience.

By Far The Best Tony Hawk Game~~!!!

Tony Hawk's Underground is in my opinion, the very best Tony Hawk game so far!

Gameplay - You can start off as a pre-made skater such as Tony Hawk himself, Bob Burnquist and others.. or you can use the famous Create-A-Skater mode. I always loved using the create-a-skater mode to make my totally awesome skater that looked just the way I wanted. You can costumize anything about the skater including tatoos, height, and weight. You can even import your own image of your face and paste it right onto your skater's! Another customization thing I love about this game is that you're able to customize your board too. Choose what images you want from a list. Have up to 4 layers of stuff on there. Even letters! After you've finished with your character..start the game! They've incorporated a great story mode in this version where the game actually has a storyline, unlike thps 1-4 where you just complete stuff on a list. And guess what? NO MORE FINDING "SKATE" LETTERS! YAY!! You can also FINALLY get off your board and walk/run around..and even drive some cars. Anway, you start off in New Jersey with your best friend, and you're fixing up your board. You friend shows up and tells you that Chad Muska is doin' a demo right in your town and you 2 are gonna go watch. The actual story starts here.
Other levels inlcude Hawaii, Moscow, and Hotter Than Hell w/ the band KISS.

Graphics - Great. Definitely what is expected of the PS2 console. Everything is realistic, from character movements to the interactive environment around you. Although the faces of the other skaters could have been better..it's stll very nice.

Sound - AWESOME SOUNDTRACK, PERIOD. Everything from NOFX to In Flames to Rap. Character voices are awesome too. REAL voices from Tony Hawk, Chad Muska..etc.

Replay Value - Decent. 3 different difficulty levels to choose from (Too Easy, Normal, Sick), and as each different diff. level is chosen, some goals change to become harder/easier. And the create-a-skater never gets old. My friend's guy had a green paper bag on his head. :-)

This game gets a definite 2 thumbs up from me! Well worth the money!

Almost Perfect

And in the beginning there was Tony Hawk's Pro Skater...

Let me first say that I have been playing the THPS series since the first game. And through all the years and games since then, it has always remained at the top of my list through every new release they came out with. Fast forward to the present and we have a new Tony Hawk game. Tony Hawk's Underground.

I picked this game up the day it was released and have been obsessed ever since. Once again, the Tony Hawk series never ceases to amaze me. This time they brought a fresh new idea to the series and I think it is quite welcomed. While the other games are fantastic - it was a good idea to freshen it up a little bit. Although, it's really not all THAT different. The goals are basically the same type of goals from the previous games. (e.g. collect 5 of this, do a trick here, etc.) except now, there's a story line behind it, which is better, because it makes doing the tasks a little more interesting.

The best part about the THPS series and now with this game, is, the gameplay never changes - and that's really what makes the Tony Hawk games fun. The gameplay. As always, with new Tony Hawk games, comes new innovations in the trick department. And this game is no different - going as far as to let you create your own trick. Of course, the usual things you expect from a TH game are present, crazy levels, awesome stuff to unlock, crazy new tricks and the ability to create your own skate park. Of course, all the usual suspects are here for your PRO skating needs.

The new feature of the game that everyone is talking about is the ability to download your face onto your skater. I can't comment on this since I don't have an adapter for my ps2, therefore never tried it.

In summary, this game is outstanding. A NEW Tony Hawk game with NEW features/storyline that stays true to it's THPS roots. My only complaints with the game are: I think the song selection could have been a little better for the soundtrack of the game and it could run a little smoother on Playstation2. I've seen the FPS drop a little bit and it lag a tad. I'm sure the latter of my complaints is remedied on Xbox. (But who wants to play Tony Hawk on an Xbox controller? Answer: not me.)

These complaints are quite minor in comparison to the fun you will have playing this game. This one's a no brainer folks. Game of the Year!

GRAPHICS: 8/10 (PS2)
GAMEPLAY: 10/10
SOUND: 8/10
STORYLINE: 9/10

OVERALL: 4.5 Stars !!

This game was one of the best games I have ever played

In Tony Hawk Underground(which I will be calling thug) is a really cool game. I got the game the first day it came out and I loved the new feature where you could get off of your board and run around where ever you want to go. I also loved the storyline in other Tony Hawk versions you would just go into levels having fun, but having no meaning to what you are doing. In thug you can also drive cars. This feature is really cool. At the last level you can drive a little dirt go kart over amazingly high jumps. The only bad thing about this game is that when you get out of the car you get out where the car originally was. I thought had they not done that it would of had more of the GTA feature to it. It's really cool to create your own character and having him start in an old run-down New Jersey neighboorhood and then going to competitins with Tony Hawk and other hit skaters. Overall, this game was the best and I think you should get it.

Best Skateboarding game (and series) EVER!!

Tony Hawk's Underground (THUG) is my favorite game I've ever played. Here's a couple of reasons why:

- Gigantic Levels
Some of the levels that were amazing in this game were Manhattan (jumping out of buildings, highways, etc.), Tampa, Hawaii, and other great levels. They were broad, and were'nt bland.

- Importing your face to play THUG as you
In this game, you can import your face into the game (if you have an online adapter). I've done it, and it looks very realistic.

- Same pros with some new ones (including Arto Saari)
As usual, I was happy with the same old pros, such as Koston, Margera, and Mullen. But in this game, they added some new ones. Some were Paul Rodriguez, Arto Saari, and Mike Vallely (as a normal player, not secret).

- Driving
In every level (excluding Slam City Jam because it's a skatepark), they had at least one driving goal, and then afterwards you could drive them around all day if u wanted. The controls for the cars were ok, but not the greatest (what do you expect, it's a skateboarding game). Also, in the Kiss concert level once you beat Story Mode, the car you can drive can get major air, and can go over the entire arena (which i thought was amazing).

- Really good music (rock, punk, rap, hip hop)
Here are some good songs in the game:
*Hot Water Music - Remedy
*Kiss - Rock N Roll All Night
*NAS - The World Is Yours
- Story Mode
Story Mode in THUG was basically you going from a local everyday skater to a pro. The levels and events are layed out nicely, and is fun to play. There are 4 modes you can play in: Too Easy, Beginner, Normal, and Sick. Being a hardcore THPS veteran, i beat Too Easy in 1 day, Beginner in 2 days, Normal in 5 days, and Sick in 7 days. If you are new to the series, i would start as Too Easy, and work your way up. If you are a veteran like me, i would start at Normal or Sick (Normal to get used to the game).

- Create-A-Trick
Create-A-Trick lets you to (obviously) create your own trick. You can have him doing a 180 to a 1440 spin (flips likewise), set how long (flip tricks and grabs) the trick will take (in seconds), set where in the trick should it start and end (in percentages), and if you could hold the flip or grab. Create-A-Trick also lets you edit and modify Special Tricks that are already created. It's fun to play around with and see what you can create!

- Create-A-Park
With Create-A-Park, you can create your own city practically, or just make a skatepark! This time in THUG, there are more objects you can put in your park, such as highway pieces, and buildings. But the greatest part about THUG in Create-A-Park, is that you can also create goals for your park, and edit them. You can make as many as you want too (you can make goals for normal levels, too)!

- AWESOME 2 Player Games
THUG offers great 2 player games, with the same old ones. Fire Fighter (my favorite) is one of the new additions to 2 Player in THUG. It's fun because it's a little intense, and fun to play (you get to shoot fireballs at your opponent - i dont want to give away any more)!

THUG is my favorite game yet (and probably will be until the next THPS game comes out)! It has so many features, and i love to play it.
The only problems i found with this game is the driving and Story Mode. When your driving around for fun, all of the cars you get to skitch on regularly, suddenly dissapear! You can't crash into any other cars, which i thought was a bummer. Besides that, the driving is fantastic. Also, in Story Mode, (like you've probably read in other reviews) is WAY too short. ESPECIALLY, if you're good at the game and your playing Too Easy or Beginner.

Lastly, I hope you will buy this game if you haven't already. And if you got money from christmas, use it to go buy THUG! Thanks if this review helped you.

Best Skateboarding Game!

In this game you start out as a kid in New Jersey who wants to become a pro skateboarder. You and your friend Eric meet Chad Muska at the beginning at a demo. You and Eric then escape the drug dealers by going to New York. You later go to many other places including: Tampa, Hawaii, Russia, and many other places.

In this game, if you win at the Tampa Am Contest, you can get sponsored by one of the major skateboarding companies (Element, Zero, Birdhouse, Girl, Flip, etc...)
Eric will join the same team as you. Later in the game you can get sponsored by a Shoe Company also.

As you go through the game you try to teach Eric how skateboarding is all in the fun and not about money, but greedy Eric keeps blowing you off, you'll show him in the end lol.

This game brings something new into the Tony Hawk series, in this one you can choose what type of gameplay you want (Too Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard, and Sick) (I believe those are the types you can choose from.) You can also walk around, drive, and climb in this game.

The gameplay in this game is very similar to THPS 4. You still ride up to people and press circle to do the objectives.

If you find the secret floating logo (or something) you can unlock the level: "School 2" from THPS 2 Hint: It's in New Jersey on the wall of the Train Station.

Just like in the other THPS games you can build your own skateparks as well.

This was my favorite Tony Hawk game!

A definite 5/5 for this one.....It was a little easy to beat though...(Beat it in 2 Days on Normal, and 6 hours on Too Easy)

Much to short!

I got this game as a three-day rental. During this period of time I managed to completely beat this game! There is something very wrong about that because if you ask anyone I know you will find out that I am not good at video games at all. I mean I own almost every Final Fantasy and I have not beaten any of them yet! I know I'll get around to eventually. Maybe its not that I suck, maybe its just that I don't try. Well, that's what I think and I'm sticking with that excuse! Half way through the game I felt, wow! This is the greatest Tony Hawk game yet, and for fun factor it is! But its way to short and I was sad to see it end! THPS 4 were much longer and much harder to get done 100% so no matter how fun this game was, it was an overall disappointment. Hey, short like most of my reviews! HAHAHA! But I like my reviews the way they are, maybe that's how Neversoft felt about this game. Or maybe they were short on time. You should rent it right away, but you probably won't want to buy it.

You do get School 2 from THPS 2, that awesome!

I know that this game is rated 'T', but I was still surprised to see all the half-naked, gyrating girls throughout the game. I know that is attractive to many people, but as a mom whose son had played the previous Tony Hawk games, it wasn't what I expected, nor is it necessary for the game. It won't be back at our house.

i say oye to this game

this game is a HUGE dissapointment to me... for i have been with the seiries from the start and usually it takes awhile to beat the game all the way through... or atleast somewhat of a challenge the first time through.... i played this game at my friends house... i got about 2/3 through the game.... it is way too short i know that i was that far because my friend beat it... then went through again to where i am and then we both got bored of it... the game has a great first impression but overall it could be a lot better.... i was personally extremely dissapointed... and i feel that they should have worked harder at it...

i was always a big fan of the level creator... i liked to mess around with it.. but in this game i tried it and was dissapointed... personally i liked thps4 soo much better just because it is longer and funner to me anyways

This is a big improvement over Tony Hawk 4. The levels are enormous and the new tricks are a lot of fun - wallplant feels like you're putting your foot on the wall and pushing back, excellent kinesthetics! Has much more 1st person feel to it than 4.

I liked story mode - made the goals worth doing. My only complaint - lose the strip club, the party boat & the drunks, kids are playing this.
