"Soldier of Fortune 2" has had its share of criticisms from the gaming press (and even more so from conservative types horrified by its gruesome violence), but fans of the first person shooter need look no further for their gaming fix. "SoF2" has its share of glaring flaws and no mistake, but what it lacks in plot and diversity it more than makes up for in adrenaline-pumping firefights. Bullets fly and blood splashes in gallons. A direct hit to the head drops your foe in a pinch; groin shots double them over in agony; arms and legs can be torn from the body by screaming lead. The death animations are hideously realistic (and sometimes even gorier than the real thing) and nearly limitless. Dropping terrorist scum has never been so satisfying -and with an array of mostly true-to-life firepower, it doesn't get old very fast. There's a lot of FPS bang for your buck too, as the game is fairly long. Despite the sameness of some of the missions, it's good (messy) fun. It may not require much gray matter, but it's some of the most intense and gratifying stuff in the genre.
One of the best FPS since SOF 1

I've been playing the multiplayer beta for the past 2 weeks, and have been nothing short of blown away (no pun intended). The graphics are great and the weapons are REAL. I didn't like the Microwave pulse gun or whatever it was called. It had geat effects, just didn't like that it wasn't real. SOF II however, even has the names right, unlike some games (anyone remember Goldeneye?). In response to Andrew, the "computer wiz", he ought to look at the title of the file you downloaded. BETA means that's it a test and not the final version. Of course things like the GHOUL engine weren't in and the graphics not as good. I preordered my copy the day after I played the beta. I reccomend that every else either order or go to your local store and buy it.

First off why does this game look so much worse than MOHAA, RTCW, and Jedi Outcast? Anyways the missions are boring and repetive. It has an outragous storyline. The missions don't have any real purpose until you beat the game and acually think about what you've done. The weapons are pretty close to real life. But the best feature of this game and SOF 1 is the gore. This game would be very boring without it. The muliplay is good, but it adds nothing new or revolutionary to the multiplayer enviroment. Overall is a VERY average game.
Great Multiplayer

If you're tired of all cheating and tired BS from Counter Strike this is the game to get. Eventhough the single player can be frustrating and boring the awesome multiplayer gameplay more than make up for it. Its basically CS without all the camping, AWPers, dated graphics and slow gameplay. At times the gore in single player seems pointless, but oddly enough it is very fitting in multiplayer to see your opponents torn to pieces...very satisfying too :)
Great game, worth the money for multiplayer alone.

I am currently re-playing SOFII and wanted to throw out a few more comments. I still stand by my initial assessment that the A.I is horrible and predictable like before. The graphics are very much improved though thanks to the excellent Q3 engine used this time. I did find the game to be a bit more buggy than I have been accustomed to seeing from the Q3 engine in other games that utilized it as well. I got frustrated on several levels of the game that required stealth. You don't have any silent weapons that I have seen except the knife and a pistol with a silencer on it. The problem I have run into though is that any little action or movement you do sets off the alarms even if the soldiers don't know you're there so it makes it near impossible to complete these levels. The first time I played the game it took me 20-30 times each to finally finish the stealth oriented levels. It just boils down to poor organization in parts of the game. Overall though it was a great game. It has a great plot and an engrossing storyline. That combined with the great graphics made it an excellent game to play. I hope there is a SOF III to come.
WOW - Even better than the first !!!

I have read other reviews on this game and all I have to say is that this is no ordinary first person shooter. This game has gone the distance with graphics, AI, and has an incredible story line to follow which in some way is uncommon in a FPS. I mean Wolfenstein and Medal of Honor are both excellent games, I just use these two particular games as examples because anyone who loves FPS gaming have most likely played thes games. I have completed the game two times now and am considering playing a third time after I finish the other current games that I am playing ( Die Hard, C&C Renegade, Red Faction, Operation Flashpoint, and Neverwinter Nights ). I recently invested in a new Ge-Force 4 128mbTI4600 video card and all I can say is that the graphics on SOF 2 are nothing short of amazing. Another plus to this game is the realistic violence. I know that many parents do not care for this type of thing and the game does include a violence lock with password for younger players. For us older gamers, I think that we appreciate a nice gory game where it so properly belongs. I try to not make my reviews too long so in closing, I will say that this game is one in a long time to really excite me and keep me playing for hours on end. It is not too easy even on the easy setting, so it should be a challeng to finish even for a constant FPS player. Get this game. You will not be dissapointed.
Great fun, but too linear.

Make no mistake; this game is very fun to play. But if you're more of an explorer-type like myself, you'll likely have more fun with games like Vietnam: Black Ops 1 & 2, which allowed for a lot more deviation from the pre-planned paths the designers want you to follow. Though those were budget titles and too brief, I had a blast playing them, and the settings were similar. A suggestion to the designers: Have some secret areas to discover; Allow the player to roam a bit, maybe down the side of a cliff. The wonder of discovering optional areas is half the fun of playing this kind of game. As it is, I feel like I'm a character in a movie (a good movie I admit), but just like an actor in a movie, I feel like I have to follow the script exactly, or I'll be shot. If there's a door, I want to be able to open it, even if there's nothing inside. This would add to my feeling of exploration.
The graphics are pretty good, but nothing I haven't seen before. The locations are memorable and well-designed. The back-of-the-truck and in-the-helicopter scenes are especially well-done and will get your heart pumping even though these scenes are really nothing more than rail-shooter type levels. But as far as rail shooters go, these several levels are the best I've ever seen.
Weapons are well done, but again, nothing that hasn't been done before. But when I say it's been done before, that's not a bad thing as far as I'm concerned. I don't subscribe to the idea that every new game has to advance the genre. All I care about is having fun. And while this game does have a few faults, I am still having a lot of fun with it, and will likely play it through again someday. Keep up the great work, Raven Sofware. Just please keep in mind that some of us would like a bit more exploration mixed in with the action. A few more quiet moments would be nice too, so we can catch our breath.
System requirements are also fairly steep, but most gamers who are already into first person shooters are likely to already have the necessary hardware to run this at decent resolutions and framerates. I recommend at least a 700 mhz. PC with at least a 32 meg video card. I have an Athlon 1.2 ghz. with a GeForce 4 128 meg video card, and it runs very smoothly at 1024 x 768 although there is a bit of scenery pop-in at times, but nothing serious. I also tried it with a 32 meg GeForce 2 MX 200 before I upgraded my card, and it worked fine with that too, but I was limited to good framerates only at 640 x 480 when I had that card. I'm looking forward to the next sequel in this fine series.
there better shots than you!

I played sof 1 and was pleased. at least i had a fighting chance. Even after the patch was downloaded the enemies were a bit more superior. In the jugle they had the upper hand, in the dark the same. the worst is standing in front of an enemy, getting what you think is a head shot, blamo, your dead. Good graphics, and recomended for the sof fan and shooter fan. Beware the upper hand is not in your favor, no matter what the dificulty level
If the gore is for you, than its a must, no matter what headache it may bring.
