From what I read about Metropolis Street Racer I expected a solid racing game with speed but got neither. The game favors no contact driving instead of fun...uh I mean speed. Imagine a racing gamme with no speed...who on earth could think of such a dumb concept its like a Sonic game without speed or a Doom type game without guns

Really a sad disapointment. The graphics are okay but the game play SUCKS!! Avoid this like SARS

MSR has fantastic graphics. The cars action is very good also. You can actually slide into a curve.."cool"! The only thing I do not like about it is what some of the other reviewers have mentioned. It is too dark to see sometimes in the night driving, and I think there should be damage caused to your car when you crash. It would make more realistic. Other than that I think it is a great driving game. I just started playing it so I have gotten to far into yet, but I can only see it getting better as I play along.

3.5 Stars out of 5 - This game could have been better if...

This game was recomended to me by several people and I went to the store the next day to get it. They didn;t have it so I bought Test Drive Le Mans. Then I went to "Best Buy" and they obviuosly had MSR so I purchased that as well. So here I was heading home with two new racing titles, anxious to try them out. MSR paled in comparisson to Test Drive Le Mans. TDLM is by far and away the best game for DC (Go read my review for it) and sadly, MSR had some smewhat major frustrations. I will start with the good points: A lot of people complaimed or praised the music in the game. I will give a hearty thumbs up. It varies from country, which I hate, to almost techno/acid jazz european beats. The only people I think who wouldn;t like the music are Alternative or punk fans. Secondly, the cars look very real. Extremly smooth and easy to drive. The cities are very detailed and the ever-changing environmental effects are gorgeous.

Now the bad: First of all there is a sysytem of "Kudos" used. In other words when racing, if you do power slides and keep ot real clean then you are given kudos. They are a lot like money because you need a certain amount to advance in the game. When you begin a race you also have to decide how many kudo points you would like to gamble. I think this aspect is not only tremendously confusing, but distracts from the playability. The tracks are also way too small and there are only three cities to race in. And again, the whole system of kudos really ruined the game for me. I am a huge racing game fan so I will definetly keep it and tackle it later, but as we speak Test Drive Le Mans sits in my Dreamcast, as it has since I purchased it, just begging me to play again, again, and again. If you need a new racer for your DC, buy TDLM. If you already have TDLM, then this might be a good purchase. If you don;t have either, make sure you buy TDLM before MSR.

Put down your Midnight Club....

...and try a REAL street racer. Not since the first Ridge Racer has there been such a beautiful racer. Great detail to mechanics, scenery, physics, you can't find a better racing game ANYWHERE. And it's too bad that Sega's not sticking around to do more with this game, as well as other games. Grab a copy and enjoy. This game will not get old.

Note to those familiar with street racing, this is about as accurate a game this side of Gran Turismo. PS2's Midnight Club DOES NOT REPRESENT STREET RACING WITH ANY ACCURACY. Support Sega and find out for yourself, this game won't dissappoint you.

Excellent with a few minor problems

Now, the review below says that this game is too hard, in many cases, he's right. But, there are ways around the frustration this game puts out. I have already beaten this game. Sometimes it gets to dark at night. (You set the time in when you turn it on and it uses real time to determine what time of the day it should be, it's not random) You can turn up the brightness on the television to fix that problem. If you want to gain lots and lots of kudos then go to a hotlap where the goal is to get a fast lap, and beat the time on your first race and then just do donuts for 10-15 minutes. On one level I got 11,000 kudos and jumped 4 chapters. There are a total of 25 chapters and each have lots of cars to get.

The cars are very realistic. There is the lightweight opel speedster on the cover. Many cars give you the ability to speed through the streets of the three cities, SF, Tokyo, and London. It ranges from the Pugeuot sedans to the Mazda MR2 and the Toyota Supra. Cars from Audi, Mercedes, Toyota, Mazda, Aston Martin, Renault, and Misubishi are fill up the forty cars that you can earn.

It may be tough but once you get used to the controls then you will get tons of enjoyment out of this game. If you are looking also for a free roam feature, there is one, you can drive around all you like, but you got to earn it. Buy a MC2 racing wheel to go with it.

Can't get enough of IT!

I tell you this game is the best racer I ever played. I just beat it and It's even cooler now then ever. They say it's hard but some chapters you just wizz through. Then you hit a task or race that seems to be impossible. You really need to go through the coarse flawlessly to make it. I even had to turn away for an hour to chill out. I mean I go throught the first three laps perfect then the last lap I hit something or someone hits me and I loose control yeah! do it all over arrrgh! Then to come back and show the game who's boss. In the end I love it.

It isn't your Hi I'm a racer and if you always hold the acceleration and never brake you can still win. Maybe in some cases you could but not for long. The handling of the cars is great they may get faster but then harder to control. Sometimes you swerve out and don't know why but it turns out that the back of your car tapped the railing and totally messed up your cars balance. Taking corners with your hand brakes and fishtailing is not only fun but also rewarded with points(kudos). The game is a challenge but hours of fun with replay value like no other. 40 cars man and are they cars sometimes I thought this is a toyota dang! I may have beaten this game but I am getting home and racing some more.

I can't stop playing this game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great game. Mind-boggling superbness. Except one thing. Any and all FR cars (front-engine, rear-wheel drive cars) are nearly impossible to prevent from spinning out in the rain.
So....I'm in the final few chapters, and my best car is a Toyota Celica GT-FOUR cuz it's the most powerful car available to me that isn't FR!!! And for the difficulty? Damn. Frustrating much....but that's what makes a good game....even though I'm not able to skillfully drive an RX-7 like I'd like to!!!
Overall....9 out of 10.

this game is not kool

Perhaps THE Best Racing Game for DreamCast!!!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 0 / 0

I only recently acquired a DreamCast console, and - given my specialty in racing games - picked up several racing games shortly thereafter. Metropolis Street Racer is BY FAR the best of these games, and I find it very difficult to imagine a better racing game for this console.

First, Metropolis Street Racer is definitely NOT for the casual racing gamer; those who view racing as continually standing on the accelerator until the race ends will fail miserably in this game. While speed is needed to clear the many tasks in MSR, the game focuses much more heavily upon racing skill and racing style, with Kudos (points) awarded or detracted based upon the player's performance.

Yet this is not the only innovation. Metropolis Street Racer includes numerous street circuits in Tokyo, London, and San Francisco - in some events, circuits at two or all three of these cities are the norm. In the Street Racing mode of the game (the main mode of the game), real-world time is used - based upon the console's internal clock and location settings - to determine lighting conditions... which means that to truly perform well, players often need to SCHEDULE when they play the game in relation to the time differentials between the player's time zone and the time zones of the cities in reality to ensure optimal visibility in daylight conditions. However, the game also includes numerous weather conditions, ranging from clear skies to intense rain to thick fog.

Within Street Racing mode, there are numerous types of events. In Hot Lap, a player must either beat a posted average lap time or score at least one lap time better than the posted time. Timed Runs force the player to complete a given number of laps within a specific amount of time. One-on-one pits the player against a solo CPU-controlled competitor in a race. There are also Street Races, in which the player competes against up to five other cars. Challenges vary, but can include passing a specific number of cars within a certain period of time, or attaining a minimum number of Kudos. In all events, the player can choose to "gamble" upon the upcoming performances by adjusting the goals of the events according to the player's racing skill, racing style, and confidence.

Having visited both San Francisco and London, I find these locales in the game to be extremely realistic. I have yet to visit Tokyo, but from the films and pictures I have seen, I find the game's rendition to be quite convincing. Of these locales, each presents rather different challenges beyond simply racing. Circuits in London often narrow considerably, and there are often traffic circles, streetlamps, and other such obstacles in the middle of the circuits. Tokyo also often alternates between wide and extremely narrow sections of raceway, but is very often filled with medians which are often extremely difficult to spot even during perfectly-clear daylight conditions. San Francisco circuits often make use of the city's steep inclines, which can send cars airborne and thus make cornering impossible.

One of the less-crucial but still interesting aspects of the game is the music. This ranges from jazz to rock to pop to country. What makes the music so special is its presentation in the form of radio broadcasts, as if the player is listening to the radio while racing. Each city has its own sets of radio stations, each selected at random by the CPU upon entering a race and localized for each city; this also means that the radio announcers in Tokyo speak in Japanese. However, the music itself is not truly localized in Tokyo, as there is NO Japanese-language music in Metropolis Street Racer (only songs in English, plus a few instrumentals), which is a severe defect in the planning and creation of the game.

Overall, Metropolis Street Racer is a highly unique, highly challenging game. Players who actually complete the game will have greatly improved their racing skills along the way, which will pay great dividends in other games in this genre.
