How did this game get such great reviews

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 2 / 3

With all the great reviews of MSR I found here on Amazon, I almost ordered the game sight unseen. Then I decided to head to the rental store and try it out first. Thank Heavens I did.

This game is utter tripe. I am a huge fan of racing games, I love all genres on just about all platforms, and so I was really excited to see MSR. What a letdown.

First off, the graphics. The cities are rendered wonderfully, the vehicles are rendered woefully. Please, there's no real lighting effect, the vehicles are bland and always super shiny new. Even street textures are poor, and slapping tire skidmarks on them does not make them any better. Weak graphics.

The game physics in general are nice, as the cars handle like the real thing. Unfortunately, they decided to ignore anything to do with reality when it comes to crashes and damage. If a car hits a wall, it should bounce, crumple, and have some damage effect. Not here, you just come to a soft stop like you'd do in an arcade game. WEAK. This game has no damage effect at all, the only ill that comes with a crash is you lose points and time. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I managed to drive RIGHT THROUGH competitor's cars. You just have to t-bone them and you pass right through. WEAK.

Overall, not worth even worth [the money].

Fantastic 3-D visual effects and great controls. Unbelievable amount of tracks and cars to choose from. In my opinion, this has got to be one of the best street car racing games ever.

Good but not great

This game is good, however, I can't say it is amazing, when i heard the game was coming I was very excited. I thought it would be a Gran Tourismo 3!! IT ISN'T!! It doesn't have the customizing features the Gran Tourismo games did. Which is a shame cause I loved fiddling with the engines. However, the tracks are amazing and the cars are stunning, definately worth buying if you are a dreamcast owner who loves a good race.

metropolis street racer vs. grand turismo 3

since a picture is worth a thousand words take a good look at the screen shots of dreamcast's metropolis street racer then take a look at the screen shots of playstation 2's grand turismo 3. see the difference? with two years in the making MSR can't be anything short of the best. MSR creates a new standard for racing games that will remain unmatched for years to come.

Played the ODCM Demo

I played the ODCM Demo of Metropolis Street Racer, and I must say it is astonishing. The graphics are phenomenal. I had my friend bring over his PS2 (Yes, he actually has a PS2!) and compare Ridge Racer V to MSR. MSR looks amazingly better than RR5. I'm giving MSR four stars, and keep in mind that this is just the demo! The final product will most likely get five stars.

Pretty good, but too damn hard to play

this is the hardest racing game i've ever played in my life. in every track, i have to pull the handbrake to make the turns in order to earn enough kudos to unlock the tracks. not just that, u also have to make it to the line on time too. if i drive regularly by just pressing the brake & downshift, i dun earn ...!! this game is really really hard, i have to play a course over & over at least like 5 to 6 times in order to get enough kudos. btw, i agree that when the car just slightly hit the wall, the car just completely stops. come on man! where is the momentum? shouldn't the car be bounced off and keep going? anyway, i'm kinda disappointed that u can't modify your car, & that's wat i love to do in GT1&2. One more thing, there is no replay, datz kinda ... u know.

well even tho i have complained a whole lot, i still rate the game 4 stars. i have to admit the game is fun. i didnt regret buying it, but i think they can improve & do better than this. and since there are hundreds of tracks needed to be unlock, this game can last for quite a long time. unlike other racing games, beat the game in 3 days and never feel like playing it again anymore...

Very Innovative, but Very Difficult to Play

I waited about a year for this game to come out, and when it did came out I purchased it the first day. The first time I played I was amazed over the graphics, this game has the best graphics I have ever seen in a racing game. The sound is very good also, a neat feature it has is that you can create a custom CD to play while you're driving. The control is perhaps the best I've ever come accross in a racer, for those gamers out there who played Gran Turismo 1&2 for the playstation, you know about those annoying spin outs. I mean you're driving straight down the road on a straightaway and a turn comes up so you press the brakes, and the %$#ing car spins out. That's doesn't happen in real life, neither does it happen in Metropolis. If you're pressing the brakes before a turn and even during a turn the car does not spin out. On to the fun factor, this game is very fun to play, up until you need to reach the next level, then it becomes very hard, sometimes I think I'll never get to the next level. The Kudos point system gives you penalties for the slightest hit against the guard rails, the other cars, etc... What they should have done was make the point system more forgiving to gamers. That's the only flaw I found in the game, other than that it's has a very different approach from other racers. The developers did a great job making it, but forgot to realize one thing that this game is a game, we are supposed to enjoy it not worry about hitting the side of the road. There are times when I race 2 perfect laps, and on the third I hit the Guard Rail, there goes my 2 laps of perfection.

Save your time and buy it the best racing game ever.

This game is extremely hard. This game is very enjoyable. I own F355 Challenge, PC Porshe Unlimited, PC Gran Prix Legends, Sega Rally, and Sega GT. This game blows them all away. It has more courses and challenges than you and 12 of your friends can count on all of their fingers and their toes (over 250). You may race everyday and never 'finish' with this game. Just buy it why dont you?

Just having Fun

This is a very impressive game. I am amazed at what must go into making a game like this. I can't believe how much time and money it must take.

I am 50 yrs old and I love the music and ambiance. The music and atmosphere are very smooth ,reflective and full of solitude. Just like you might experiance going out for a reflective drive. And I am amazed that the game maker would market a product with this type of music and solitude, when the market is probably geared to 20 +/- yrs old. But I thank them very much. I hope they make this game for the PS2, and keep up the good work. Thank you SEGA

And then finally after 3 hourse youre finally finished. so u get the car, right? WRONG!! you have to get under a certain time to get the stinkin car!! my final thing is just dont waste ur time/money buying such a dumb game instead get tokyo extreme racer 1 or 2 they are a lot better with a lot better graphics !
