At first glance, this game gave the impression that it would be a mindless shooter, but after watching a trailer on [...], the serious tone of the game grabbed my attention and I put it on my list of games to buy. I wonder what took me so long. Created by the developers of the Hitman series at IO Interactive, and with a music score produced by Jesper Kyd, players can rest assured that this game is not the cheap shooter that the cover and name suggests it is.
Imagine the world had Russia been the first to drop the Atomic Bomb and ended the Second World War. Imagine Russia's former Soviet Government now the planet's superpower and America's inferior position therein. As the Communist party builds in strength, consuming one small nation at a time, stretching its bloodthirsty tendrils closer and closer to home - you experience firsthand the demise of the free world, America being the final target.
New York City is invaded and America becomes occupied by the soviet regime. They control the news stations and try to instill in people's minds that they are undefeatable and attempt mass indoctrination of Communistic values.
You, Chris, were fortunate enough to find a member of the underground Warring Against Reds Resistant Movement in the middle of the invasion and are escorted to their hideout and military camp. There you are debriefed on how to weaken the Soviet hold of New York and are assigned missions by the head of the Warring Against Reds Movement herself. How you play the missions and in what order is up to you, but if certain strategic key hits are made on the enemy, you will find assaulting their main strongholds in New York a lot easier.
For example, prior to infiltrating a compound, it might be wise to destroy some of the bridges that connect with that part of town to stop the influx of enemy troops or destroy fueling stations and landing pads to further disrupt enemy reinforcement and supply. If you take this approach, you will find yourself jumping from one part of the city to another, using the sewers, in your attempt to weaken the enemy before delivering the final devastating blow. But before committing any action, you might want to gear-up by assaulting a Russian weapon Depot held within an abandoned city restaurant. So, this game has an element of strategy.
You can assault the Reds head on, or cut through city alleyways and flank their position. You can use trucks, or outside ventilation shafts to get inside buildings that can be used to pick off a couple of heads before telling your men (and women) to charge. Which brings me to the easy command system: for Playstation, Triangle is attack, Square is abort, and Circle is defend current position. There has been no easier way to command an army in a game. You can have a max of twelve freedom fighters join up with you, depending on your charisma (charisma is calculated by the amount of time you spend healing wounded civilians, rescuing POWs and blowing up enemy compounds).
My only complaint with this great game is that they should have spent more time with the development of the story. The Soviet conquest of America happened rather suddenly. I would think it would take a bit more than a day to completely take control of a country. They should have drawn out the invasion more so that the player can feel a real sense of loss, and perhaps feel more inspired to recapture what is ours during the fights. The game does do a good job at portraying America completely dominated by the foreigners, having all these Russian speakers on TV explaining the current events and the new system. The game is also way too short. After beating it, I got the impression that the creators, although innovative and talented, were rushed. Would love to see this story retold and this game remade under a more generous budget and time table.
Awesome....just awesome....

When I first got this game I had my doubts for some of the same reasons others may have had doubts. The way the game was described to me it sounded alot like State of Emergency with the whole fighting for freedom in a active urban atmosphere. Sounds great but State was very disappointing due to the overall impersonal feel of the game. Freedom Fighters is the game State should have been. Everything about this game is incredible to me. The major plus is the one key squad commands you give to your "freedom fighters". Also what impressed me was the fact that the fighters had respectable a.i. once you send them out on their orders, because for me it is ultimatly frustrating to see one of my men shot down when they could have ducked behind something. In addition the game gives the combat a very "freestyle" feeling in that you can run through an area fire quickly, reload very quickly and never really break stride. Plus you never get stuck firing on a dead body. They maintain the pace of the game by having many targets and by facilitating your rapid change of focus so that one minute you are firing in front of yourself then you can quickly spin an fire on another target in one fluid motion with no jerky lag time. This game is simply fun to look at and play. Overall a pleasure to play over and over and over....
ONE HELL OF A GOOD GAME!!!

"Freedom Fighters"--what's that? Only one of the greatest games ever made, that's what! I've owned it for about two weeks now and I haven't played anything else. It just doesn't get old. The "ragdoll effects" that made Hitman 2 such a joy are even better in Freedom Fighters (bodies fly out of explosions, bounce off walls, flop down stairs--beautiful!) There are only 9 missions, including one unlockable bonus mission, but most of those 9 are looooong missions, boy. The last mission alone takes a minimum of two hours to beat! And you won't believe the action. I've played war games like SOCOM and MOH Frontline, but they don't come close to the intensity of Freedom Fighters, especially when you're able to command twelve (count 'em--TWELVE!) gung-ho rebel soldiers. Woo!
Controlling your crew is incredibly simple. Triangle button=attack, square button=regroup, x button=recruit and circle button=hold position. That's it. And they actually obey you! If you want a couple of them to run kamikaze into a machine-gun nest, they'll do it, no questions asked! In addition to being the team leader, you're also the team medic. After the gunfire has faded, it's up to you to find and heal your wounded. Or not--it's your choice. You can also be a Good Samaritan and heal the enemy's wounded. They'll be so thankful that they'll join you and take up arms against their own army!
I love this game. I love everything about it: the story, the graphics, the sound, the voice-acting, the cut-scenes, the dialogue, the fast load times and the steady frame-rate--I can't find a flaw anywhere. And best of all, there's room for plenty of sequels! I raise a glass of hijacked Vodka to the folks at IO Interactive and may Freedom Fighters 2 (and Hitman 3) be just as good as the originals. Dasvidanya!
This game ROCKS!!!

I rented this game and I just could not stop playing it. Its first player is cool. I like how you start off as a plumber and move to the top Freedom Fighter. I also like it because you can recrute people and you can send them happily off to thier deaths. I like that he reloads and aims by himself, unless you go on the aiming mode which is mostly for getting people from distances.
The multiplayer is cool too. All the levels are kind of like king of the hill except with flags. But if you don't want to do that, you can just play around and capture the other teams base. It is one of the funnest multiplayers I have ever played. It will keep you and your friend ocupied for at least a day.
Over all. This game is the best game you can get for under $20. It will keep you entertained for months
Great Game

I rented this, and i fell in love as soon as i mastered the controls and got the two fighters wtih me. its great, from the idea to the story to the gameplay. the only major disadvantage is the shortness of the whole thing.i started playing thursday night, and my friday midday i was done. but i had so much fun i had to do it again, so i did, but this time instead of easy i put one up, and now, the game has turned into one hard game. before i breezed through the missions, rearly dying, and now, its a mystery if i don't die. its not that bad, its just more of a challenege to use tactics and your guys instead of simply running in, killing everyone and having your guys take out whoever is left behind you. while the game may be short, if you put it on a hard enough level, you'll spend plenty of time playing it.
This game is absolutly freaking...........AMAZING!!!

Great job EA!!! This game rocks!! There is only one little thing. It's a little too short. I finished it in about two weeks. It's got a very deep, innovative story with action, and drama placed into an alternate history on the U.S.A. Get out there and buy this game!!!
Your not playing it?! (gasp)

The whole idea is that the soviets droped a bomb and Washington D.C. and are now trying to rule the US. You play thourgh multiple sections on each city. One of the best features is that the missions bounce off each other. Ff you kill a helicopter landing pad in one area, no more helicopters will come in that city. The weapon selection is not so great, but it is fun. I tried 4 player with my friend, but the multitap would register that the extra controllers were there. I dont know if it was the game or the multitap. I would rent it first.
Good Game... Good Story (Looks Like "the Thing")

FF is a very good game, with a good history, It has 4 levels of Difficulty, Personally I started on the 3rd level and was a little hard on the first missions but really entertain.
Here come some pros and cons of the game
PROS
1- You r the lider of a group of rebels that fight against the new Russian (red) order, so this offer you the ability of recruit some rebels that wants to joins the cause, this is real funny because U can control until 12 rebels, and give orders just like:
-Scout, Defend Positinos, Attack specific targets or areas, etc.
2-The Music is really good
3-Quick Saves (you can save your progress on sewers entrance) are really usefuls since the misions demands a lot of time.
Cons
1- The graphics could be better
2- The weapons, sometimes is hard to find the right weapon for the job, specially when you're carring the Machine Gun and want to pick up a Sniper rifle, YOU cant carry Both... NOT like GTA
3- I do not like some control moves, for example if you are on a situacion of cross or heavy fire and you need to use a Health pack.
Basically for these 3 reason I dont give the 5 stars, BUT Definitely FF is a vary GOOD game and a MUST BUY for most PS2 Gamers.
