Okay so I bought this game on Sunday and beat it yesterday (Thursday). That's how addicting this game is. IT is so much better than the other budokais and sagas. It combines the best of both games into one---so yes that means all new controls oo, but it makes the gameplay better. Almost the entire epic of DB/Z/GT is told in this game. It's amazing with the coolest graphics ever. And also, there are over 80 playable characters. That's right. So if you don't have this game, go get it now!!!!!

Best DBZ game ever!!!! Even better than Budokai 3!!!!!!!!!!!

When I got this game for my birthday I was so amazed how they try to give you a close and similar fighting expereance of the show. And they did a good job. The areas are as big as a level as on the failure game DBZ Sagas which was the most slow past and the worst DBZ game ever. But this game and Budokai 3 are the best DBZ games in the market. The thing that makes Tenkaichi better than Budokai 3 is its more like the show fighting style and everything and has almost everything in the sagas except for the Shadow Dragon saga and The Lost Episodes saga and the Garlic Jr. saga but besides that. This is a really good game it has the whole Ginyu force and has Bojack,Janenba,Super 17,Baby Vegeta,Evil Buu,Master Roshi,General Poa. It's missing Omega Shenron and Uub but thats it. Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi is a game I recomened to all die-hard DBZ and some Anime fans such as myself. This game is so cool. Keep up the good work Atari and Bandai.

IT IS MUCH MORE EASIER 2 DO ENERGY BURST THEN BUDOKAI 3 BECAUSE IN BUDOKAI 3 IT HAS 2 BE THE EXACT SAME TIME

Wow this game is awesome but, there are some disapointments but let's start with the pros. First of all, there are over 50 characters. Yes, Hercule is in there but he will serve a purpose. Now the modes are what really make this game exciting, but I won't spoil too much, just the stuff that you'll first see. Ok, the best mode is the Z battle gate. what it is is just a story mode that has movie stories, show stories, and other stuff. Just select a battle, listen to a cutscene, and fight. Next is the world tournament, which needs no introduction, has 4 modes novice, adept, advanced and one I won't tell you. Next is Practice, which has practice, where you can fight a cpu and not die, and tourial (sorry if I spell it wrong) where you can learn how to play. After that is Ultimate Battle where you can fight 99 other people so you can get rank #1. Evolution Z is a customizable mode where you can upgrade your character with portara. Fuse portara, and you can unlock SOME characters (most you unlock in z battle gate). Dueling (what I should've put first) is where you can pick two characters and fight (yes it's 2 player). The final one is Character Illustrations. It is a not needed mode that let's you see Ilustrations of characters that were from the series.

Gameplay 9.2

Sound 9.0

This is probably the best DBZ title to come out on the PS2. Known as DBZ: Sparking! in Japan, Budokai Tenkaichi is a fresh fighting game that allows freedom of movement around huge levels and is probably has the fighting system that is the closest to the DBZ show. You can play as 60 characters, 90 if you count transformations (which are separate characters themselves and not actual skills this time around. Trust me that's a good thing. I'll explain later), and fight in fast paced action.

Graphically, the game is pretty nice. Not the best cel-shading I've seen, but definitely not the worst. Also, many small touches make the graphics even better, such as correct auras, electricity in the auras, and other small stuff.

Gameplay is much different from the other Budokai games. Along with the larger arenas, you fight from third-person perspective, with the option to freely move about the stages. It's really cool, but you can't go in and play the game like before. The control scheme has been changed up to the point where you won't know what the heck you're doing if you don't learn about them. They fit the game pretty nicely, but at times they can be somewhat clunky, but not to the point where it's super horrible. Also, characters are noticably different from other characters, save for a few that are super similar. The difference in characters, free-roaming, and speedy gameplay adds up to quick thinking and strategic measures at a bit of points.

Sounds are really nice. I'm not going to get into this but nice sound effects all around. Music is exactly from the older Budokai games, so don't expect any new tunes.

Overall, if you're a DBZ fan, it's a must buy. If you like fighting games, a bit passable, but can be fun.

Whining Unworthy DBZ Fans

You guys complain too much about everything. IGTs(In-game transformations)wow something to really whine about. You guys need to learn that many transformation had their own unique moves and fighting style shown in the anime if you watched. This is the reason of no transformations. Besides it's better when you pick it b/c you never power down.
To me this game was a great game. I knew most things about it due to visiting and joining s10.invisionfree.com/Dranium or dranet.com.We finally got characters that weren't playable in the others. Great graphics(actually look like the anime). THIS NOT BUDOKAI 4!!! People incase you haven't noticed the producer was Dimps this year and not the other company. Basically this is anew series and expect a new and improved sequel for either PS2 or PS3. I as a TRUE DBZ fan enjoyed this game and is looking forward to Supersonic Warriors 2 and Chou Dbz(an arcade game of Dbz)

I got this game a while ago when I was shopping for something else entirely and I just happened to see it on a shelf. It seemed like a good game and I bought it since I likes my Dragonball Z.

First off, this is how a DBZ game should be. You certainly feel like you are in the show. Budokai was cool but the charcters moved very stiffly and slow. The only problem is now you move much too quickly and it's hard to control your guy at times. Also, the amount of characters avaialable to play with(after you've done a quick sweep of story mode that is) is quite large. Super Vegeta is my favorite.

Also there is a rather beefy customization option available. You upgrade your characters with z items. Though it's a bad that you have to upgrade every form of goku, vegeta etc with different items. For example if you give super saiyan goku a +2 attack item then super saiyan goku 3 won't have it. Basically what I'm getting at is if you want to play as a variety of characters then you're gonna need a lot of z items or do a lot of item switching.

The downside which has been mentioned is the controls are somewhat stiff but I still like the attempt to make the game intense like the anime. The game also has it's chokepoints. The single most annoying thing I have done at least recently is surviving two minutes against Kid Buu as Vegeta. It's not Super Battletoads hard but its close. Also, there is not much emphasis or need to engage in fisticuffs. Most fights are won by charging up and letting rip with your special moves as soon as you can. And then not letting them get in close. The only time I fight hand to hand is when the enemy closes in and I have to knock them back. Still, for all it's flaws I love this game. Grab it and enjoy wailing on people as Goku/Vegeta Super Saiyan 4

Think of it as a combination of Budokai 1 and 3 with the music of 2

A few months ago I got this game and was amazed. There are more characters than any other Dragonball Z Budokai game yet. Not only do they have many (though not all) characters from Dragonball Z, but they also have a few characters from Dragonball, Dragonball GT, and several villians from the Dragonball Z movies. Now you can play as Bojack, an Oozaru, Master Roshi, Baby Vegeta, and Super 17, just to name a few. One new feature that was added in this game was that now you have the choice of fighting as one of a number of different transformations of a character. This is both good and bad, because each transformation has its own fighting style, and special moves, which adds variety. But I liked manually transforming better, because it's truer to the show. Goku is his own person, and there aren't five different forms of him just because he can become four different levels of Super Saiyan.

The controls of the game are completely different from any other in the Budokai series (not without good reason though). Now you can actually fly, and the arenas are much bigger because of it. You can also fight anywhere you want, including in the air, underwater, and of course on the ground. One down side to the change of controls is that they've eliminated the kick button. Instead all attacks are executed with the square button. I liked the kind of freedom I felt when I had a choice, but now everything is pre-programmed. This is also the first game I know of to have energy blasts shot with the triangle button. The only remaining button is the circle button, which is now used for blocking.

This game has the best graphics of any of them too. It's immediately apparent, when you see the openning scene. My favorite part of this upgrade in graphics is that when you destroy buildings or mountains they leave craters (once made you can fight in them as well). I'd also like to mention here (although it doesn't directly apply to graphics) is that you now have the option of choosing whether or not you want the dubbed voices, or the original Japanese.

The last thing I have to talk about is the story mode. For this game they brought back the style of story mode they used in Dragonball Z Budokai 1. By this I mean that it's divided up into sagas, and sometimes throws in hypothetical battles. They've also revived the cutscenes method, of Budokai 1, however they only use it before the battle. I have yet to see another game that has cutscenes before and after you fight.

All in all the game has its flaws, but it's still a great game. Just be warned that it is like no other Dragonball Z Budokai game you have ever played before.

My new favorite DBZ game ever

This is by far the best fighting game ive ever played from its easier combo attacks to the 3D gameplay its simply an amazing game. But sure others may rate this game poorly because of the differance in controls from the previous games in the budokai series but that is an extreamly easy problem to fix you simply go to options select controler settings and search through until you find the settings you like, (I mean isnt that what the options menu is all about.) but i strongly reccomend this game to to gamers who like any game that yog get amazing 3D graphics, a great series fallowing game mode, customizeable charcters, many new arenas that where not in the former budokai games, many new playable charcters including baby vegeta, super android 17, giant ozaru (ape) vegeta, and gohan(great ape),and many more never before seen in any former budokai game. over all this is probaly the best,(My favorite) game I have ever owned or played
