Dragon Ball Z has been known for its 2d-dimmension gameplay but now Tenkaichi takes it to 3-d, the gameplay great alot of character. I Loved this game DBZ got it right this time although Budukia 3 was good to. No problems her except the A.I is a bit to strong and there attacks do more damage and take up less energy. But once you master this game its game you can keep playing over and over again.

Great Improvement, Stil a Few Issues

Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi is a three-dimensional fighting game involving a ton of Dragonball Z characters - even ones only seen briefly in the series.

The graphics are really the standout improvement here from previous Dragonball Z games. They do a great job of really maxing out the capabilities of the PS2. Not only are the cut scenes great, but the main gameplay features *giant* maps, with multiple terrain types (water, mountains, plants and more). You can move up to higher ground, draw your enemy into the lake to slow them down, and use other tactics. It makes the game much more like "playing in the Dragonball Z world" vs being a side-scrolling fighter.

The sound is definitely enhanced over previous versions, too. You can now choose to have the Japanese voices for your characters. It's ironic that in early days of gaming, games would come with only Japanese voices and US people would complain because they wanted to hear English. Nowadays we appreciate the language much better. By giving you the option, you can use whichever suits you best.

That's not to say that *all* sound in the game is stellar. They definitely could have included a more robust musical soundtrack - and general commentary. It often seems like those things are overlooked in fighting games, but if you're a fan and playing the game for multi hours a day, pretty much every day of the week, it wears on you quickly.

For actual gameplay, as mentioned, the maps are great. They have tons of characters which is really wonderful. It's fun to see some of the more obscure characters they included in the set. The movements and animations are great. However, the *controls* to get them to do things - and the skill of the AI at doing the same moves - are really unbalanced. We have played thousands of games on all systems over our reviewing career and there is just something not right about the combat controls here. So while you're struggling to get the combos activated, the enemy you're fighting is zipping through them smoothly and trouncing you. This is something you can "deal with" if you're patient and into the series - but if you're not an avid gamer, I can see someone getting frustrated very quickly and not playing the game again.

I'm all for having games that are difficult! I enjoy the challenge. But a game should be difficult because you are ramping up in technique. It shouldn't be difficult because the combo you typed in isn't accepted, or the key strokes react sluggishly so that your character dies before your commands are "heard".

Definitely a big step in the right direction - I really hope #2 takes care of a lot of these control issues. If they do, that will be a 5/5. For this version, I'll give it a 4/5 as a great game but with some issues.

It's a very great game

It may not be like the other games but it's fun. the only 2 problems with the game are controls and some of the fights (even on easy mode) are really frustrating. For instance, fighting Vegeta in his ape form is difficult (actually this might be the hardest fight in the game or at least in the story mode)and even fighting in his first form, with his scouter on, can be difficult too (not in story mode but in Ultimate battle)due to the fact that he keeps shooting energy balls at you and lets not forget Broly. if you hit him, of course he takes damage, but it looks like your not hitting him. aside from that, everything else is good. If you have to choose this or Budokai 3, I am going to tell you right now, they don't have the same gameplay. the best discription for the gameplay I can give to you is it's like playing a third person shooter, like a third person shooter meeting a fighting game, or simply Heavy Metal Geomatrix without the freakin' huge guns, heavy metal music, blood, jetpacks, and well, you get the idea.

Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi.........a new kinda Budokai.........

If you come into Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi expecting it to be like the first three Budokais; well- you're going to be pleasantly surprised because it's a great deal different than those fighters. While the look and feel of the DBZ universe is there, you no longer play from a side by side approach of most 3-D fighters but from behind the character itself(like in Armored core if you've ever played that game). This new approach adds a more personal touch to the action by making you feel like you're actually in the battle itself taking place over full roaming 3-D environments that are completely destructible. Developer Spike(who created such games as Fire Pro Wrestling & Crimson Tears) will probably be criticized for this new gameplay mechanic because, at times, it gets repetitive and monotonous as it seems as though all the characters have pretty much the same moves and whatnot at first. Yet, if you play deeper into the game, you'll soon realize that all is not what it seems and it is a refreshing change to your normal fighters. Three or four hours into the game, it grew on me and, now, I look forward to Tenkaichi 2.

Certain changes were made in Tenkaichi to make it a totally new DBZ experience, assuredly, but the one biggest changes that had me wailing was the ramped up AI. Out of all the games I've ever played(including Jak II), this one literally had me cussing like a madman at times throwing down my controller in disbelief. The AI is absolutely brutal in this game. Course, once I learned the ins & outs of Tenkaichi, that began to ease down.

While it may not have as much depth to it as, say, games like Soul Calibur or Tekken or even Dead or Alive; it's got a certain quality about it that will appeal to fighting fans. One that I recommend as there is alot to like about this game. More than 60 playable characters, free-roaming Destructible 3-D Environments, profiles on the whole DBZ universe, different modes of gameplay and more.

Although, in my personal opinion, feelings will be mixed on this game. Players will either love it or hate it. I, for one, love it.

awesome,but could be better

I agree with most people that this game isn't Budokai. But it has alot of the cool characters like Broly, Cooler and Janemba. At first this game was pretty hard for me because I was use to the other DBZ games. I favroite match-up is Broly vs. SSJ Gogeta. I wish they made a DBZ movie where those two fought. Anyway, I enjoyed this game.

Good Game

In this game, you can fly when every you want to. The game is complicated at first, so don't get frustrated if you cannot do it a first. The game play is alright, but it could use a few more moves. You can barely do 7 favorite moves. Favorite moves are moves that only this character(s) can do. You can also play as charecters you never thought you can play as. Some are Super 17, Baby, Pure evil buu, pam, all of the Ginuy force, super sayian super trunks and super saiyn super vegeta! The only way to do this though is you have to fuse Z items. Fusing Z items is very complicated. I used codes because I cound't figure out any of them.

Best DBZ game yet to date!

This game is extremely awesome. You get all the characters from DB through DBGT. You do all the sagas in the whole history of DBZ. Personally, I really like SS4 Gogeta the best, and Mecha Cooler. And I like...ooooh! I like'em all! Overall, this game r-r-rocks!!! You gotta get your hands on it if your a true-blue DBZ fan. Get it now! I'm the #1 fan of DBZ, and if I liked, no take that back, LOVED this game..you will, too!

BEST DB/DBZ/DBGT GAME EVER!!!!!!

This has GOT to be the best game for the PS2 that I have played in a WHILE! And, I have played a lot og PS2 games in the past: Sonic Heroes, Dragonball Z Budokai, Budokai 2, Budokai 3, and just too many to post! Anyway, this is the best game I have ever played. This has all of your old faves, Like Piccolo, Vegeta, Gohan, Krillin, and of course, Goku. It also has some new but familiar faces, like, Android 19 from the original DBZ Budokai game. It also has Dordoria and Zarbon AND Zarbon's Monster from from Budokai. It also has characters from Budokai 3. Like, Super Saiyan 4 Goku, Vegeta, and Gogeta!

It might not have Omega Shenron, Uub, or Sepreme Kai, but it has some new faces from Dragonball, Z, and GT. Like, Bojack from DBZ Movie 9. It also has Broly the legendary Super Saiyan from Movies 8, 10, and 11. This even has Janemba from Movie 12. If it has Janamba, it has to have Super Saiyan Gogeta, right?

The good points about this game are:
Free Flight
Fully destructable 3-D arenas
The engergy blasts and attaks look awsome
The rock-paper-siccors look of Dragonrush from Budokai 3 is GONE!
over 80 CHARACTERS!!!!!!!!!!

why it has over 80 characters is because, this game has no transformations! But, Goku's Kaioken transformation is an exception. So, if you want to have a battle between Super Saiyan 3 Goku vs. Majin Buu, go right ahead!

GET THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!! YOU HAVE TO!!!!!!!!!!!
