I have to say that Singstar has been out in the rest of the world for several years and has only just landed in the USA. I have a UK PS2 here in the USA solely to play this game, but now it is released in the US you can all enjoy it.
The game is like karaoke, except it helps improve your singing my showing you if you are in tune or not and is much more addictive because you play it in a competitive mode by battling against another person or many people in party mode.
This game will break down any inhibitions you had against singing in public and for a group of friends is an excellent nights entertainment. Over and over again. You _will_ want to get the high score!
All they need to do next is bring out the all the other CDs so you can enjoy your favorite tracks if they are not in this one.

Singstar has been popular in Europe / Australasia for years, with 7 titles released (a total of 200 songs).
With just one game you will get bored, but hopefuly more titles will be released in the US.
If you own a PS3 or plan to upgrade I suggest you wait until the PS3 version is released - then you can purchase only the songs you like online. Luckily the PS3 is region free so there is no danger of it not being released in the US (although you may have to import it).
You also need new microphones for the PS3 version - but they are wireless.

I absolutely love this game! I originally played it at the Playstation tent at Lollapalooza and spent 3 hours battling other people instead of watching musical acts like Kanye West. It's great fun for parties and everyone gets really into it. The lyrics are really easy to read and it shows if you are off key or not so you know to adjust your voice to the right key.
The only drawbacks are that the mics do not work with other karaoke games for playstation and the song selection. Some of the songs/artists I've never heard of before like Keane. I wish there were a few more song choices, esp. more from the 80's or more actual rock songs/groups like the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Some songs in the game are:
The B-52's: Love Shack
Elton John: Rocket Man
Gloria Gaynor: I Will Survive
Dusty Springfield: Son of a Preacher Man
Aretha Franklin: Respect
The Police: Every Breath You Take
the offspring: Self-Esteem
Fall Out Boy: Dance Dance
The Killers: Somebody Told Me
Hole: Celebrity Skin
and also includes the White Stripes, Blur, Keane, and more!
UK Tracklist is better!

I recently bought this game and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. The downside, as mentioned in previous reviews, is that these mics won't work with Karaoke Revolution games. It's a shame because the microphones feel heavy and well made and it's a pain to have to get another mic on top of these just to play the other games.
I haven't played KR so I cannot compare the two, but I was very disappointed that Maximo Park, Franz Ferdinand, Hard-Fi, Queen and plenty of others were not included in the US version. Next time, perhaps they can keep the UK tracklist and simply add more songs to suit the US market if they must? If they release the 80s version here they'd do quite well to keep that one exactly the same, unless of course they'd like to add more songs like I suggested above... I'm all for that.
All in all, this game has been fun and that's all I really wanted from it. It could have been more fun with the songs from the UK version but I knew they were missing when I bought it so it really doesn't bring my overall rating down.

For a group of early 20-somethings that don't feel like spending money at the bar, this is a fantastic game. Normally my friends and I break out DDR, but this is definitely our new favorite. It's great weekend entertainment without dishing out loads of cash. A MUST for house parties.
The playlist is amazing, it has a nice mix of classics and new songs. When I was comtemplating buying this item I looked at the playlist and saw Friday I'm in Love by The Cure. It sealed the deal for me.
For younger kids with a more...general taste in music (i.e. rap, R&B, top 40 pop) this is not the game for you. But for those of us with a broader, more eclectic taste in music, this is the one to pick up.
Great new PS2 addition

If your kids love DDR and guitar hero, this will make a great addition. Just be prepared to hear Love Shack mutilated by tone deaf 13 year olds!

I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my daughters, ages 11 and 13. Both of them love it. It is fun for them and I could see them having fun with it at sleepovers. It is a lot of fun even if your not the one holding the mic. There is a good mix of music that all ages would be familiar with. My 15 year old son sang the White Stripes "Blue Orchid" and walked out of the room when the song was over. My daughters did the "playback" with his voice (he was clowning around when he did it) and I laughed until I couldn't breath. It really is a lot of fun and I would recommend it to tweens, families and people that like music and don't mind laughing at themselves from time to time.

This game I'm sure will be loads of fun, I've only played Pop and 80's so far, but I looked at the song list on this one and felt this was one I also needed. Great fun for everyone.

The person who reviewed it last had just about all the same complaints I do about the game... No songs to unlock, you can't mute the singer in the game, it can be overly picky as far as your pitch and sustain goes, and if you don't know the song you're about to sing, you're out of luck.
I'm coming off of playing Guitar Hero so I'm used to playing a game where they rate your performance and then let you on to the next song... when you start SingStar Rocks! all the songs are available for you to play immediately. The game is a lot of fun to play with friends, but it only amusing enough to keep my attention for about 15 minutes if I'm playing it alone.
There are a few song medlies in the game, but they're pretty terrible as far as medlies go... it's just a few lines from a song, an abrupt ending, couple seconds of silence, and then a couple lines from the next song... they couldn't have hired someone to just mix between the two songs? I broadcast on internet radio once in a while so I know it's not that complicated of a process.
As far as whether or not I'd reccommend it for children, so far (I haven't had the game for very long) the only song I've come across that I might have trouble allowing my kids to sing (if I had children) is Celebrity Skin by Hole... not that it's THAT terrible, really, but there is a word or two that I wouldn't be happy hearing my children say.
I'm mildly dissapointed in the song list on the game... I did come across track listings for the other versions sold in the UK and they seemed like some great songs, I just wish they had brought those games over as well... maybe they will eventually.
Bottom line for me is this: buy the game if you plan on having a lot of parties or friends hanging out at your place... otherwise, it's probably going to cost you $50 to be entertained for half an hour.
