A Classic Among Classics...

I'm one of the ten or so people who actually bought a Sega CD and, like many (if not all), I believe this was the best RPG for that otherwise disappointing system. Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete brings me back to the good ol' days of RPGs before the likes of Final Fantasy VII and VIII were called the best RPGs ever by newbie gamers who just don't know any better. The story was flawless and breathtaking then, and yet, somehow, it all seems better this time around. What makes Lunar Lunar though is the fact that Working Designs was behind it. They can translate even the lamest games and make them playable (I even bought Shining Wisdom for my Saturn just because of Working Designs!). The people at Working Designs are a bunch of comedians. There are so many jokes in this game it's unbelievable (second only to Final Fantasy IX in humor). The game has received an upgrade in every single way, most notably, the graphics. Yes, the graphics aren't an important part of any game, but it's nice to see that they got an uplift this time around. Back to the story though. Everything about the story is perfect, it's beautiful, it's touching, and it's one of the best in any game I have ever seen. I could go into more detail...but you should really play it for yourself. What surprised me about playing Lunar again was the length of the game. It's pretty long. While not as long as its sequel, it still offers days of fun like I had with the original version. The characters themselves are great. Typical of their RPG times? Yes, but great nonetheless. Especially Alex and Nall, who I just loved. The difficulty of the game is very applaudable as well. Not incredibly difficult, but it's not easy either, and that's just another reason why I love this game so much. The one thing that didn't stand the test of time was the battles. They're very straight-forward and basic, nothing to it at all. It's just tap...tap...tap. Boring indeed. Thankfully the random number of battles isn't frequent. The packaging also needs mention. Lunar:SSSC comes with a nice box that contains a 100+ page leatherette hardbound artbook/instruction manual, a making of Lunar CD, a music CD, and a full-color cloth map. Who loves ya? Working Designs! Unfortunately, new-school gamers might be put off by Lunar's old-school look and feel continuously asking "Where's Bahamut Zero?" This is unfortunate because it looks like Lunar might go back to the cult status it had on the Sega CD instead of selling by the truckloads like it deserves. Oh well...definitely their loss. Nevertheless, this is a masterpiece. Lunar:SSSC should be as mandatory as the controller for PSX owners. Truly one of the best RPGs of all time...hey, you know the drill: If you're a gamer, you owe it to yourself to buy this. Oh yes, don't forget to pick up the sequel as well.

Old School RPG

Honestly I miss RPGs like Lunar, now days most RPGs like the newer Final Fantasies feature a story that is too complicated and sometimes weird to thoroughly enjoy. Lunar keeps in simple, by making the story a tried and true good versus evil story, and by doing an excellant job on developing the charectors within the game. I guess its simplicity could be the downside for some gamers, but I personally enjoy a great old school RPG like Lunar from time to time.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE RPGS EVER MADE!

The plot? It's really just your average epic fairytale of fantasy(only a bit more original than that). Yet the story in itself is one of the most powerful ever told in a videogame. It starts out with a perfectly ordinary country kid by the name of Alex, who wants nothing more than to become Dragonmaster, the protecter of the goddess Althena. So he and a couple of his friends decide to set off on an adventure. Everything goes pretty well at first, with only a few difficulties along the way, until Luna, Alex's childhood friend is kidnapped. He finds that the only way to save her is to encounter and defeat the Magic Emporer himself...(it's not quite as corny as it sounds.)
If you're into fancy graphics, you won't find them in this game, though I'm sure you would enjoy playing anyway. The simple, 2d world has something that you wouldn't find in anything but an old school RPG. But if you're still a little dubious, here's something that might encourage you. Frequently placed in the game are anime scenes that really add to the character development. They are usually put in places where you meet a character or when an important event takes place. They're very beautifully done, with English voiceovers and all. And they keep you on the edge of you're seat from the heartening opening sequence to the very end.
The gameplay itself isn't really anything new: it's turn based, like most old school role-players, where you can choose to attack, do magic, or use a healing item. The battles aren't too difficult, if you take your time, although the menus can be just a little annoying at times.
The characters are what truly make this game special. They each have very definite personalities, not completely likable. But some of them do change their opinions by the end of the game. They argue often, and make as many cheesy jokes as they possibly can. By the end of the game, I felt a special connection with most characters, as if I'd known them for years.
There's a lot of dialogue in the game, and it doesn't get boring since practically everything said is a joke There are also boxes next to the words, displaying their faces depending on how they feel and what they are saying. Every character has a few different expressions.
Lunar is also very bright and light-hearted, especially at the beginning of the game, which gives it a more cheerful feeling, and shows the contrast when thing s start to go wrong. The game is also very short, only fifty minutes at most, even if you take your time.
So is it worth buying Lunar Silver Star Story for the PS1? YES! Sure, it has a couple of flaws here and there, but you'll love it anyway. And if you find you enjoy it, play Lunar 2 Eternal Blue Complete. After that, you can join the countless Lunar fans waiting, hoping, for a Lunar 3.

I recommend this game to anyone who considers themselves a true RPG fan. I've been a fan of the series since it first hit sega CD and i've followed closely ever since. If you're looking for a game that is based off of nothing but eyecandy, keep looking. But if you want a game with a GREAT story and wonderful cast of characters that will have you spending hours upon hours playing, click the "add to cart" button.

Ranks with my best

First off - this game was nothing new when it came out. You won't see anything revolutionary, save maybe the hour long total of anime clips.

What this game focuses on is what I believe to be the most important aspects of an RPG. The Storyline and character development are the best I have had the pleasure of reading. You know its good when you could take the game and turn it into a movie, minus all the random battles, etc, and it would remain truly amazing.

The battle system is very well balanced in my opinion. I hear some people saying they are disapointed because of the lack of magic and customization, but what they forget to realize is that by taking away some of the customizable options of todays rpgs, the characters are much easier to develope and relate to. Plus, the game would need to be reworked completely in order to blance the system again. I have realized that throughout the years, the rpgs have become more about customizing nearly everything, and as this has happened, the storylines and development dwindle slightly.

Once again, I will say this is nothing new, but it strikes me as a true RPG. It is ALL about storyline. If you are concerned so much with graphics, that you will not play a game such as this, don't buy this game, and change your genre, for you are not a true RPGamer.

Around April sometime I was looking through an old video game mag. that I have. While I was flipping through I noticed a 2 page advertisement that looked just awesome. I read the whole thing and got obsessed with the game. It was Lunar SSS. I tried finding it on the net and in stores and everywhere. I went to far places and big cities just to find this game. No luck. That's when I looked on the back of the ad. in the mag. It was a 3 page ad. And that 3rd page said that Working Designs are going to quit producing it. I started to panic. ok. I'll quit with the story. I found it at a local Wal-Mart. The only place in 5 near cities that I went to that had the game. This game is the best. It really is. If you own a PSX and you play RPGs then this is a must-buy. It's got a fun storyline, VERY good translation, FUN characters, they never take anything TOO seriously, lots of jokes, prob. over 30 spoilers that I could name right away. This game has everything that makes a good RPG at the max. Very fun game. Recommend it to everyone. But good luck finding it. Happy Hunting!

To me, this game was brilliant! It wasn't complicated, so it was just simple, and involving, yet easy to understand. The battles are basically just like any other turn-based old school RPG. You use magic, items, and you can attack. The characters were pretty good, and seemed pretty "real". I beat this game in under 20 hours, so it is a bit on the short side, not to mention a bit easy, but it was one of the most enjoyable RPGs i had played in a while. The sound was great, and had two songs which had real singing in them. It also has almost an hour of anime cutscenes. While the voice acting in the cinemas is pretty bad, the high quality anime, and the length of them makes them very cool indeed! The graphics aren't very good, because it was a remake of a 16-bit game, but the cutscenes make up for that. It wasn't quite as good as xenogears, ff7, or ff8, but it was still great! I'm not gonna call it a must have, but i am gonna call it a must have for any RPG-er, because it is simply fantastic. It's just so simple, yet so entertaining and involving! If you like RPGs, get this one if you can! I think it's out of production now, but you might be able to pick it up.

Best game ever!

I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I bought Lunar: SSS.I gave this game 5 stars because thats the highest it would go!On a scale of 1 to 10, this game is a 15!

I have played and beat Final Fantasy 7 and 8,& this game towers over them.Sure the FF series has computer animated fmv's and an intense battle system, but Lunar is more like an anime with a simple battle system.Drawing and junctioning magic, gf abilities, and the hard-to-find items to make weapons were all time consuming. And to max out stats and levels would sometimes take months. While Lunar wasn't as long as FF7 and 8,it was a whole lot better.

Great Story

Lunar: SSSC has by far the best story of any RPG. It's not the most original story, but it's told very well through dialogue and anime scenes that make it much more enjoyable.

Lunar's battle system is great as well. It allows for plenty of planning and strategy. However, the magic system is the one bad thing about Lunar. You can't customize your magic like you can in the Final Fantasy games; each character just gains certain spells as they level up (if you've played Xenogears, it's pretty much the same thing).

Graphically, Lunar: SSSC is obviously an improvement over the Sega CD version, but it still doesn't take full advantage of the Playstation's capabilities. Of course, if you're really into RPGs, this shouldn't bug you. Besides, they would have had to rework everything (even more than they already did) to make Lunar 3D.

One last thing about the game: you can save anywhere! No longer will I waste my hours away saying, "I'll just go to the next save point."

All in all, Lunar: SSSC is one of the best RPGs out there, especially for old-school fans.

You HAVE to get this game!!!!
