Lunar:Silver Star Story Complete was my first foray into the world of RPGs. First of all, I have to admit that it wasn't the chubby, badly drawn characters that drew me to the game, or even the wonderful cgi, complimenting the animation sequences, or the music, both of which are reasons in themselves for giving this game a try. What drew me to Lunar, was the thought of dragons, and the cat-like creature, Nall. That changed as soon as I got into the storyline. Alex had lived in the small town of Burg all his life, with his companion, Nall, and Luna, a lovely young woman who Alex's parents had taken in. Luna possesses a wondrous singing voice that ultimately gets her (and her friends) in quite a bit of trouble. What I liked was that rather than set her up as the helpless damsel, Working Designs allowed Luna to accompany Alex on his quest to meet the white dragon. She isn't much for fighting, but that magical voice of hers can charm, or frighten away most enemies. Along the way, we meet new friends, and new enemies. Ultimately, it leads to (doesn't it always?) a battle between good and evil, with the sake of the world hanging in the balance! If you enjoy Ranma 1/2, Jade Coccoon, or just like dragons and cat-like creatures with bad attitudes, then this game could be exactly what you're looking for! On last note: Please play this before you buy Lunar:Eternal Blue, because this is the original game, and it might help to clear some things up.
I love this game!

I adore this game. I've already played it through twice and plan to do so again. I thought I'd comment on the person who said this is not a good game for first time gamers. That's not true. I was a first time gamer when I played it. I'd never played a single RPG in my life. And I played Lunar and I loved it. I think it's a great game for first timers because the systems are easy to follow and easy to use, and because the puzzles are interesting without being super complicated (with ONE VERY NOTABLE EXCEPTION, in a tower which I won't name ;) ) Well like I said it was my first RPG and it got me addicted, and I think its a great game for a first timer. *Please note I am reviewing Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, they are basically the same games, but just with a few new additions. Thank you*
Every once in a while the classics return updated. Working Designs has done a phenomenal job restoring the classic Lunar: Silver Star onto the Playstation as Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete. The game is very enjoyable and while the game is considerably short compared to other RPGs, it works well. The dungeons test the level of your characters but never exhaust them into a need to train excruciatingly to move from place to place which is the type of flow that is much needed to enjoy an RPG rather than just play it. Also the inclusion of ability to use the joy pads makes moving easier than pressing down on the control pad.
The artwork and cut scenes are done beautifully, however the majority of the time the game characters are sprites. The gameplay is enjoyable but if you don't have the patience or want to strategize you will find yourself throwing down your controller, dying, or asleep. The game itself never is frustrating if you take the time to train your team and not just run from every threat. Each boss has strengths and weaknesses and if you take the time to observe them you can defeat them without much of a problem, but not to say they are easy. Though no one boss will kill off your entire party with just one blow.
The writing is some of the best I've ever seen in a game. The sharp wit of the characters and comedic dialogue is balanced so well that it never gets stale or reused. The game can also be very serious to the point you can relate your own emotion to the characters to laugh and even cry with them while playing this game. The cut scenes are something you will look forward to rather than just wish you can skip from the rich opening to the enjoyable ending.
However this game was made back in 1999. While it can be pretty to look at, if you are a fan of rich cell shaded 3-D environments and characters... well lets just say the game never looks better than the animé on Saturday mornings. It also can get tedious, as some dungeons seem to go on and on and on...
Even with some of its shortcomings, RPG veterans and those new to the series should pick up this title for a good time. Lunar: Silver Star Story is the lost classic and sleeper hit of the end of the millennium. I proudly give a game that has become my favorite a perfect score.

This game is without a doubt superior to any of the recent Final Fantasy games including 9. Games like Lunar just don't get made anymore. Many games recently have just been a bunch of glitz and glitter with no substance. This game has substance to spare. All the characters come of interesting, and you will undoubtably get attached to a few of them along the cousrse of the adventure. This game simply has everything an RPG fan could ask for. First the story is long, deep, and well paced. There are plenty of twists and turns, and the game never gets boged down. The characters are interesting and likeable. You actualy end up caring about the characters and what happens to them. This leads to a deeper sense of immerstion in the game. The fighting system is turn based, but takes into account where your character is positioned. The fights become a lot more about strategy than they do in other rpgs. Furthermore there are no anoying random battels. Finaly the game has solid graphics and sounds, particulary in the voice overs. Admitably the visuals are out dated, but they give a nice sense of nestalga. Plus the game contains over an hour of anime cut scenes. These are all breathtaking and well done. They add a great spice to the game. All together i have had more enjoyment from playing this game than i have from any other rpg. It is a true gem and should be snatched up by any rpg fan. Remember that this is a collector's edition game. Working Designs stoped producing the game last year. So get your copy fast, or face the dread of biding for it on some internet auction site.
What a beautiful game!

I'm a hard-core RPG gamer and I was entranced by this game. I had not had any previous exposure to Lunar, so everything was new to me. I was impressed with the translation, the humor and the absolutely beautiful graphics and soundtrack. I'm hard to impress, but Lunar succeeded. I finished it before most people even knew it was out. This is a must-have!

If you have been playing RPG's for as long as I have than you plrobably already know that Lunar: Silver Star Story is in a class of it's own. This game, like all RPG's, is great not because of it's graphics or cool sounds, but because of it's story. And Lunar has one of the best stories I have ever seen in a video game since the original Phantasy Star (which I still own). What makes it good is that the player becomes emotionally attached to the characters as they develop throughout the game's story.
I've played all the new RPG's like Final Fantasy VIII and VII and yes they are visually awesome, but none of these really got me to care what was going to happen to the characters like Lunar did. To me, the story and musical score is what makes this game stand out from the rest.
The orignal game was release for the Sega CD and I was thrilled to see it come out for the Playstation in such a nice format. The game's animations have been redone and graphics tweaked for the better. Overall the experience was better this time around than it was the first time I played it.
If your looking for a game that puts story and characters above other aspects of a game, than I would definately recommend this game. So join Alex on his quest to save the world. You'll find that he not only saved it, but that he also touched your heart.

Originally released back on the Sega Saturn, Working Designs ports it over to the Playstation, VERY NICELY. The original great game is here, with a few good enhancments. The best one being the Anime scenes. Very well done, and they help move the story along nicely. The game's not up to par with the likes of most Final Fantasy games, or many other Square/Enix RPG's, but it's definitely a must have for any RPG fan.
Gameplay: 8.1/10
I'll start with the battle system. The battles you run into to aren't random; you can see them on the screen, and avoid some of them if you don't want to battle. A lot of them are impossible to avoid, though; this is needed, so you aren't just running through the game not fighting. You have the usual attack, run, and skills during the battles. When you have your character do a physical attack, he will move to the enemie he's attacking and stay in that spot while the enemies do their attacks. Some of the enemy attacks will move your character a spot or two back. This way, there's some strategy involved on the placement of your character. Each enemy has a certain amount of spots it can move, so if you want to stay away from some of them, don't attack an enemy that's surrounded by other enemies, because they all will be in attacking range, and they will all get a good attack in on you. A lot of the times, I didn't really worry about this, but it's a little added strategy to the battles other than the usual fighting. One of the more useful ways of taking advantage of this, though, is to defend on one turn, let the enemies move close to you, and then hack and slash away. This way, you don't move in without getting an attack on your enemy, and letting them attack you. Be smart, and you can avoid a hit here and there. The battles are turn based, by the way; none of that meter stuff seen in most Final Fantasy games. Really either way is good to me.
The way skills are learned in this game is just your basic learn a skill at a certain level system. Example: Learn a small healing spell at level 5. There's no custom way of learning your attacks. You have to realize, that this came out in the early 90's, where there was only a game here and there had a deep system to go along with it. It gets the job done, but it's not as advanced as some RPG'ers would like. I didn't mind, though. Don't let this turn you away from the game. You will miss out on a memorable experience if you do.
The areas in this game are big, good looking, and fun to work your way through. Your usual RPG stuff is here. Caves, Villages, Castles, etc. They offer up a good challenge, too, which you can't say about a lot of RPG's out there. It's not impossible by any means, but it's not easy either. Good challenge. The world you travel through is well designed, and pretty big. As a whole, you won't find a bad or boring level in this game. It's an expansive RPG world, with many fun challenges along the way.
The characters are very good. They are pretty artistic. A couple basic looking ones, but overall, they have my pick as some of the better ones in an RPG, ever. The character development is not too bad, either. It's not the best, but you should soon care for each character atleast a little. Especially the main ones like Alex, and Luna.
I like the story a lot. You wont find a deep, complex plot. You get a straight-foward, hero defeating the villian, type of story. There's a good surprise here and there, but not many. You will grow to hate the villians, and the story, while not being too complex, pulls you in and doesn't let you go until you finish the game. I guarantee you will enjoy it.
I take off the 1.9 because the battle system can get repetitive near the end of the game. The boss battles have you basically using the same spell per character each turn, hoping you have enough left to finish him off. This makes the usual fun boss fights, a little less fun than normal. Atleast they're challenging, though, since they always have the same level as your characters. I didn't take off any more for the semi-basic storyline, and not so deep skill learning system because of the time it came out. That's something you have to realize when playing this game: it was one of the best for it's time.
Replay Value: 6.5/10
As with a lot of RPG's, it's not very good. I, and many will play through again for the positives I mentioned above, but there's really no incentive to come back and play through the 25+ hour quest again. Only for the hardcore RPGer, I guess.
Music: 8.2/10
Overall, some very nice tunes scattered through out the game. It's not mind blowing like some of the Square soundtracks, but it's a good one. You will enjoy it for the most part, I know I did.
Graphics: 9/10
I'm basing it on the year it came out. The levels, and battle graphics look stunning. With that said, though, the characters suffered and look pretty bland. That's the reason for the 1 point off. Not a major problem at all, though. Especially when you play this one for the gameplay, like all RPG's.
Overall:(Not an average) 8.5/10
For it's time, it offered a fun battle system, great graphics, a good story, and clever, fun level design. One of the best games in the genre at the time, and rightfully so. It has taken a slight hit over the years, but overall, it has stood the test of time pretty well. RPG fans would be wise to not miss out on this. With the special package one, you get tons of extra goodies; well worth the money, although it's only possible to find it on sites like Ebay. If you find it, go for it. You will not be disappointed in the slightest at this classic RPG.
I recommend Lunar 2 as well. It improves upon this game in almost every way.
This game is a labor of love!

This game has what I fear RPGs are losing: a true sense of adventure. A true adventure not only changes the world in the game but the characters themselves (one of the greatest examples being Final Fantasy VI). Some games have tried to portray love in a passionate sense, but they really fail to grasp the way people are drawn together and instead the love seems rushed. But not with this game! This game really brings home the point of how powerful a love for someone can be without being too over-dramatic. The charaters are great. They all are more charming and fun than the average RPG. In conclusion if you love RPGs that offer more than just great graphics and complicated features than I really really recommend this to you. Out of the many RPGs I've played including all of the Final Fantasy games, this one is definitely one of my top three, with only Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VII being higher. Old-School gamers or gamers who love a good plot should definitely check this out!
Don't miss this RPG, you WILL REGRET IT!

To me this is the 2nd greatest RPG ever made (next to FFVI). Why? Okay first of all, I could care less if the graphics are old school, and if the battle system isn't as great as Grandia or Legend of Dragoon.
First of all, the characters are characters to remember. They will make you laugh, be serious, and even cry. While the dialouge is of course old school (It's 1992 for cryin out loud. An example is that they use childish expressions), I didn't care.
MUSIC: I loved the music in this game. I find myself constantly humming a tune or two, and even acting out battle tunes (using the voices and what they say.) So the tunes are catchy, and yeah its still 16 bit music, but I still like FFVI and CT!
PLOT/STORY: In my opinion...this is the most touching story I've ever heard. In my opinion its also the GREATEST STORY I'VE EVER HEARD! Okay the story isn't that original (Girl gets kidnapped, boy save girl and world), but it always what the story is but HOW IT IS TOLD! I've seen so many stories that aren't original but I think they have great stories for how they're told.
BATTLE SYSTEM: Okay if you want the truth, I like this old school battle system. While every boss fight is gonna play out the same and I can battle without looking, it puts your strategy to the test. You can't just do an all out attack! Unlike Final Fantasy I actually need to know how fast an enemy is. (If you want my opinion the FF games are the easiest ever.)
DIFFICULTY: Overall, this game is not NEARLY as hard as Lunar 2 or FFIV. But I'd say its about medium difficulty
Overall: If FFVI hadn't been made, I'd say this is the greatest of RPGs ever made! It definitely has the best Story ever! Great characters, good music, and a great villian. I liked the villian in this one a lot more than sephiroth. My only gripe with this game is that Alex and Kyle don't get enough MP.
