Masterpieces: Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger

First some warnings: These games mostly play on the PS II, but there are some glitches, and Crono Trigger slows down at times even on the Playstation.

Final Fantasy IV was the first Squaresoft game I ever played and all I could think of at the time (1993) was: "This game totally blows away those Enix Actraiser and Soulblazer games!" FF IV still holds up even today with its involved story and multiple worlds. This version includes some nice CGI rendered opening and closing sequences. Some comments on this "real" version and the American (SNES version): Why did Nintendo in 1992 need to change the word "pray" to "wish"? Why did Nintendo need to change the word "Gysahl" to "Carrot?" And why did more than half the items of the game need to be taken away? Now I finally know what the Big Chocobo is for! :) Anyway, this FF IV is one hard game, forcing me to level much farther to finish the game then the SNES game ever did.

Now for Chrono Trigger: This is a masterpiece of a game that I still haven't seen story or game play surpass since. Being able to fly around in your world is one thing, but being able to fly around in your world in 5 time periods is quite another. Just the ability of changing one thing in the past having an affect on the future is such a cool concept that has never been duplicated. The Square and Enix developers outdid themselves on this game and they truly were the "Dream Team" of RPG developers for their day. I have only gotten two of this games endings but I hear it has over 10! There is no CGI in this game, the opening is done in very nice Anime style of the games characters. It really looks like a real cartoon. That is one cartoon I'd watch if it existed.

Overall rating: 10/10 !!!

A happy day in my gaming life

I must say how happy i was to receive this package in the mail. Final Fantasy VI (then II) was the first RPG i ever played in my heyday. it's always held a place in my gaming life that no other game can replace (with maybe the exception of FF7) the story, the battle system, the music, i could go on... soon after i was introduced to chrono trigger by a friend from school. he had told me that the same game company that made the Final Fantasy series also create Chrono Trigger. naturally, i was intrigued. as with FF4, everything the game encompassed completely hooked me from the get-go and i couldn't stop playing. both were an amazing experience for me when i was young, and it still is to this day. it's a bit unfortunate that today's crop of gaming youngsters can't appreciate this game simply because it doesn't look nearly as good as todays games do, which is understandable, yet still kinda sad. both are a great starting point for really young gamers that wish to get into this genre, and more power to them for wanting to do so.

Chrono Trigger and FF 4 - excellent old school rpgs

Chrono Trigger's is a great game albiet the very dated graphics. For me, the story, characters and battles were interesting enough to balance out the uninteresting graphics. If you like old school RPGs, you need chrono trigger! But there are weird 8 second lags before and after battles that I personally could be patient enough for but some may not be.. so beware.
Pros
+Fun.
+No nonsense fluff, just good old school rpg fun
+Good story
+good characters
+interesting time travel concept
battles that take place directly on the field map, while still being turn based.

Cons
+those 5 second "new" animates scenes are nothing to be excited about, they are short and there are few of them and they dont contribute much, just reiterate stuff..
+the delays before and after each battle, can get anoying.

FFIV was a worthwhile game as well, though it requires some serious grinding at times to progress, which I hate.

Final Fantasy IV bad, Chrono Trigger good

I had never played either FF IV or Chrono Trigger before this, so this review isn't a nostalgia thing. Chrono Trigger is highly regarded as a classic SNES RPG, and one of the best games ever by some. FF IV is a Final Fantasy game. I was pleased and a little bit tired of Chrono Trigger once I'd finished, and I never wanted to see FF IV ever again.

I played FF IV first, and it wasn't cool. I'd expected more from it. It did start out okay, and it does have cool characters, like Cecil the morally conflicted dark knight, and Kain, and Cid the crazy airship builder, and Edge the ninja prince. But it just fell to pieces. The first major problem is when Cecil is turned from a decent character into a sissy paladin a couple hours in. That was just lame. This meant that instead of having an interesting role to play (the conflict between morals and following orders), you are just saving the world. That is what you do in most games, but in FF IV it isn't a well developed theme. The story is okay, but not innovative, though there is some cool stuff (like the underground dwarves). The ending was just stupid.

The main problem, though, is the combat system. It has the standard Final Fantasy action system, which is decent, but it doesn't have action bars, which it seems to need to keep itself honest. This results in enemies attacking four times between each of your guy's moves. There is also plenty of spell junk, the worst offender being the enemies which give all of your guys every negative status affect at the same time. This is especially annoying because FF IV has at least ten different status affects. The boss fights are all based on finding the trick rather than having to perform well, which is a bad thing. Fighting becomes boring quickly, and you do a lot of it, because the random encounter rates are high (though some more recent games still top it in that respect).

The music is actually good for its age, though it gets annoying after awhile. FF IV is also too old to discredit the graphics. Just to mention, the translation was bad, like most old Japanese games. And to air some minor grief's, each FF IV save takes up 2 blocks, and the save times are crazy long. It took about 20 hours to finish. Also, I had to level up for 5 hours before the final boss (which is a fourth of the game) which was the most infuriating thing ever. FF IV could have stood for 4 or 5 stars when it came out, but no more than 2 now. Some games can stand the test of time well. FF IV could not.

Chrono Trigger, on the other hand, is a great game, that would have been the best game ever if I'd played it when it came out. It is definitely an RPG classic. It has awesome characters, like Frog, and Robo, although their default names could use a little work (Crono, Marle, Lucca...ick).

The storyline is the best part, and is one of the best I can recall. It features some excellent dialogue, and flashbacks, and in-game cutscenes. The anime cutscenes they added in were nifty, and they left the old ones in too, which was an excellent touch. The time travel aspect of the game was also a lot of fun. The graphics are nice enough, and actually good for the SNES. The style is rather unique. The music, a few songs in specific (like the "Frog Theme"), is good, and even stirring at times.

The combat is all right, though it eventually begins to stagnate, so I could only take Chrono Trigger in small doses. It uses a standard action system, with the main difference from other RPG's being that each character has a list of moves they learn in order, instead of having all the spells available. I can't decide if this is better or worse. The boss fights are unique, though several fall victim to being trick fights as well. Chrono Trigger is awesome in that it doesn't have random encounters. That was a wonderful change, and a definite plus.

The main problem is with the emulation on the Playstation, which gave Chrono Trigger horrific load times, for some reason. This was a terrible error which did detract from the game. They are really bad, as bad as most new games. Chrono Trigger took about 25 hours to beat, and would be a 5 star game when it came out, but the load times are bad enough to bring it down to 4 stars, combined with age. While age hurt it less than FF IV, Chrono Trigger has still been weathered down.

In conclusion, buy Final Fantasy Chronicles for Chrono Trigger, and don't even get FF IV out, unless you are a huge Final Fantasy fan. In the case of video games, a compilation is worth as much as it's best part. There are several newer, better RPG's you could play first, but the more Chrono Trigger ages, the worse it will seem, so pick it up as soon as possible, if you haven't played it already. It is good.

The Best Role-Player AND How To Fix the Load Time Problem

I've noticed a couple people complain about the load times (especially during battles). There's a quick and easy fix for PS2 owners: In the main menu under the PS1 Driver, there's a setup option for "Fast Loading". When you turn that on, the game will load as fast as the original cartridge did. Problem solved.

.

And now for the game: Chrono Trigger is one of, perhaps even *the best*, role-playing game ever made. Final Fantasy 6 is my favorite in that series, but Chrono Trigger has a stronger appeal for me, personally, because of the time travel/sci-fi theme. You and your characters travel across several thousand years (from medieval times to a distant, robotic future), in your quest to beat back the bad guys. The battle system allows you to chain your characters together for extra-powerful attacks, which is a unique innovation. Finally, how the game ends is never the same. Like a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure, the ending varies depending upon how you play the game. Chrono Triggers offers lots of replayability, and is a true masterpiece.

As for FF4, the game is somewhat weak. Many call FF4 their favorite final fantasy, but I was not too impressed. I'd put it somewhere in the middle. It was originally designed to run on the 1980's 8-bit Nintendo, but at the last minute FF4 was upgraded to run on the just-released 16-bit Super Nintendo, and it comes across as primitive, both in graphics and story. Not as good as what came later (FF anthology).

Bottom Line: Buy Final Fantasy 4/Chrono Trigger right now... mainly for Chrono Trigger, but also to satisfy your curiosity about FF4. If you're like me, you'll cherish it forever.

I grew up playing Chrono Trigger and actually have written a review of Yasunori's part of the OST. Over time I've developed higher standards in video game plot and more specifically in character developement. If you're looking for character developement here, you'll have to use your imagination because our hero is a "silent protagonist".

I guess my main difficulty with both titles in the collection is load times. It might be worth it to spend that $60 or $80 on Chrono Trigger for SNES and then play it with an emulator.

Two great games, now in one box! ^_^

If these games on the playstation can live up to the original super nintendo versions, this is going to be a magnificent set. Final Fantasy IV (previously known in America as FF2) is one of the best FFs ever, and Chrono Trigger is DEFINATELY on the list of best 5 RPGs ever, on my personal list it is number 3 behind only Final Fantasy 3/6 (American number/Japanese or Anthology number) and then Final Fantasy 8. FF4 comes in at about 4 on my list of all-time rpgs, and I've played everything I've been able to get my hands on.

Finally, Chrono Trigger for Playstation.

The first RPG game I ever played. I rented it from a video store every week and when they finally sold it, I was mad, then, Playstation comes out with it, and they have it with special animation sequences. Its awesome. I would really suggest buying this game, even if you have it on Super Nintendo. I bought it for Chrono Trigger, but Final Fantasy four is a pretty cool game, too.

Some of the best games out there...

I'm not going to say much, just that Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy IV are widely regarded as Square masterpieces. The chance to own Chrono Trigger so long after its original release on SNES is a dream come true. Something similar goes for FFIV: I have FFII for the SNES and I look forward to seeing the differences now that the entire story was retranslated and the original items and difficulty level have been restored. I hope they left the "Spoony Bard" in...it'd be a shame for such a catchphrase to be lost ;) FFIV got me into these games in the first place, and I'm wonderfully pleased to own them again. Only complaint is the slowness of CT, but I can deal with that!

Two of the best... I think

Final Fantasy II (or IV as it is called in Japan) was one of the best RPGs of it's time and I've just started to play it again thanks to Chronicles. Crono Trigger is also heralded as one of the best RPGs of the 90s, I've never played it but I pretty sure that I'll like it. Although FF II (IV) could show it's age when I play it now, and Crono Trigger could turn out to [stink] as well, I'll just have to wait and see.
