Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of FlightTrying to fly a flight from point A to point B I find it difficult to change radio navigation frequencies with no radio panels available. Try to use pause command and then shift 2 to get the radio panels with no successful results. The pitch trim{up or down)does not work like the real world. Must continue to hold up or down elevator force. I had Flight Simulator 98 before and I fill it was more user friendly.

The flight simulator is a flexible product. It allows the use of keyboard flying, if you really want a challenge, or accessory flying with a joy stick or any of the many products on the market today. It is expandable by adding new aircraft. I find it to be a wonderful opportunity to take some time flying and get away from the every day office routine. Microsoft has done a wonderful job with the scenery and many other functions while flying the airplane.

Needs Yoke! or at least Joystick

Great real-time simulation. This is NOT a *game*- but an exciting virtual reality flight. It does include ATC but NOT the major civilian airlines like I was hoping (American, Delta, United, etc.)

Above all let me stress in this review: YOU NEED THE YOKE. If you can't afford a yoke the joystick is second best but the keyboard SUCKS. I learned that. So it's okay to use the keyboard for your first few flights but be sure to invest in a Flight Simulator yoke (or joystick) if you haven't already.

PS? Amazon: Where did the game go? You are not offering it anymore! :( only 3rd party sellers now? ITS STILL IN DEMAND

I had bought this as an upgrade to an earlier version. It is fun to play with, though quite basic compared to what is available nowadays. It does not require too much of system resources and provides hours of entertainment and some flight learning.

An improvement over 2002

This is the third version of MSFS I've owned, after 2000 and 2002. Overall, I enjoy the new version, and I think both first-time users and MSFS veterans will enjoy it as well. I still think it's the best flight sim on the market.
There are a lot of features that have been added that I really like, such as improved air traffic control and weather, being able to vary the weight/balance of the aircraft, the addition of airport runway/taxiway signs, and the addition of new aircraft. With respect to the latter, it was interesting flying the Wright Flyer, although there is not much that you can do with it other than try to beat the Wright Brothers' distance records, since the thing has a service ceiling of about 30 feet. I really enjoy flying the new taildragger aircraft like the Piper Cub and the DC-3. The Cub is especially challenging to take off and land, although it is currently my favorite aircraft. It was also fun flying the Robinson R22 helicopter. The runway/taxiway signs were something that I wish had been included in previous versions, although configuring scenery settings to display them on older, slower computers (like mine--650MHz/192MB RAM) will cause performance to suffer somewhat. The weather graphics have been improved as well; again, if you have a really fast computer, then the graphics should look spectacular with all the settings cranked up. Dynamic weather is much more realistic, and I really like the new weather themes feature--which allows you to quickly select canned weather patters (i.e. fair, stormy, cold front, heavy snow, hot/hazy/stormy)
The air traffic feature has definitely been beefed-up. I've found it much more challenging to fly IFR, as ATC fires off vectors much quicker. It also seems to be smarter than in the previous version--on one flight, it seemed like ATC was vectoring me around a thunderstorm, and they can vector you for landing on more than one runway (you can also request a particular runway for landing). Also, instead of vectors for landing, you can request an instrument procedure (if you have the SIMchart); although I have not used this feature yet. Being able to file a flight plan in flight is also a nice improvement over the previous version, as is being able to change altitudes enroute. All in all, much more realistic than the 2002 version.
Finally, some of the things I didn't like as much. While I really like the new web-style help feature, I found it extremely annoying that when I clicked on some of the topics, I had to connect to the internet to view them. Fortunately, this has only happened on one of the topics (Taildraggers). I like the look of the new GPS, but the windows are huge and a little hard to manage, and they slow my performance down when they are open. Finally, I would have liked to see new modern aircraft, as well as one from previous versions of MSFS--the Concorde. I was able to import Concorde into 2002 without much problem, but I can't figure out why it was excluded from the software after 2000.
Overall, a great improvement over 2002, with a few annoying features which haven't really detracted from my overall enjoyment.

FS 2004

For years now, I've been flying the many versions of Microsoft flight sims, and with each new release, I've always been completely impressed. I've watched them expand and evolve into products that somehow make the previous versions seem lame. Yep, I believe that the next best thing is to actually fly the aircraft depicted in the game. However, for those of us who prefer to sit in the comfort of our home and fly to Hong Kong while watching Monday Night Football, this is the ticket.

The game itself, as many others have noted, has not changed all that much from 2002, but the changes that the game now includes, in my opinion, justifies the price. Setting up an IFR flight plan has never been easier, nor has been easier to change a destination, even while in route to the original! Yes, now YOU have total control of your destinations. Of course Microsoft has included the ever present pre-planned flights, but even those are fun. The GPS is more realistic, and has so much information than in 2002, and finally the ATC is flyer friendly. No longer do you feel like your bothering the computer by asking for permission to land. Heck, it will even give you directions if you get lost.

The weather generating engine is superb. The clouds, sky, sunsets and everything else look so realistic, you'll find yourself reaching for your oxygen mask. It's that good.

Some have mentioned that this game takes most of, if not all of your computers resources. This is somewhat true, but lets face it everybody, these days good games require fast processors, high RAM, big drives and powerful video cards. The product was designed to look it's absolute best, so of course the computer needs to be able to handle the software. If this simulator were to be played on an older Pentium 2, there would be no reason for Microsoft to spend the time or money developing the new version of this trusty sim which is played throughout the world. And besides, people would complain that the graphics are archaic, the planes look funny, etc., etc.

About the only complaint that I have for Microsoft has to do with the aircraft that is included with the game. I understand that Microsoft was going for the Century of Flight theme, but come on.....The Wright Flyer? In the simulation itself there are other aircraft generated by your computer as traffic which are not included with the flyable planes, such as the Dash-8. There it is on the tarmac as traffic, but I can't jump into the cockpit and fly it. Why not? Even the web has literally thousands of planes to choose from, so why can't Microsoft offer the same thing? Or maybe the question should be, why won't they? If you don't mind the downloading and installation process of the web aircraft into FS, then almost any plane can be had. But I've found that this is less than a perfect process on many, many occasions. Come on Microsoft, were are purchasing the product so GIVE US MORE PLANES TO CHOOSE FROM. Other than this complaint, the game is great. Well worth the price.

Wow! Superb Simulator

It had been a while since I did the MS Flight Sim. I found them boring and hard to fly. I recently got back into flying light airplanes again, and bought it on a whim to fly prospective routes, and I was blown away. The smoothness of the sim was impressive, as was the responsiveness. I thought the performance for the Cessna 172 SP was spot on. All in all, it's a fun sim, and has some really good lessons on not only using the sim, but flying in general, which makes it more fun for folks not familiar with aircraft operations. Of course, I think we're finally getting to the point where we have sufficient computing power on our desktops to drive higher quality sims like this. Works fine for me in XP, no problems encountered.

I have a toshiba laptop with a nvidea 5200go chip in it. this game will not draw the 2d aircraft panels on the 3d display. Microsoft has identified it and suggests that you go to nvidea's web site to download new drivers. On their site they say that drivers are not availible for the 5200go chip you have to go to toshiba. toshiba says that it is a third party problem and I would have to go to Microsoft. and around and around we go. I had good help from microsoft online but they could not fix the problem. I ended up taking the game back for a refund. I still run 2002 proffesional and it is excellent. this is not a game but a flight sim. therefore if you have a 7 second attention span this game is not for you.
