this game is cool but not the best

I recently bought the game after playing it on x box. It is an awsome game but x box's version is better. The graphics are good and the overall mechanics are great. althoug 2 player is limited and isn't as fun as x box but it is a great 1 player game. there are many downfalls to the game so i suggest that you rent it or play it for ps2 before you buy it. Its probably the best army game for ps2 besides soccom and is better then frontline. I have to say i am a little dissapointed with it but thats just my opinion. heres my ratings

I've always liked Tom Clancy games and this is a good one to add to the collection. hope this was helpfull!

Above the average 3 stars, but nothing spectacular.

Like many others said, this game had great potential. There were some great missions, SOCOM like squads, and an eerie setting(to me at least). If only the controls werent so frustrating that you would die 300 times trying to switch squad members. Althought this scheme is NOT as confusing as Conflict:Desert Storm, there are better games to play, especially now that SOCOM 2 is out. Worth a rental, and perhaps a used purchase for $20 or less, but dont expect to get sucked in too much.

Awsome!

I got this game 3 days ago and it kicks ass! I have been playing a lot so I have already beat the first set of missions. The graphics are ok but the game play is awsome, being a tom clancy made game, everything is realistic. I would definately reccomend this game to any strategic gamer.

Just About Excellent

Ghost Recon is a great game. It wasn't all that hard to beat, but I am a war junky. Some missions took a few tries, and I was grateful to learn from my mistakes. In single-player mode, I suggest you equip one or two of your troopers with LAWs (anti-armor systems) on just about all of the missions. Even if you don't find any armor, the rocket launchers are pretty effective against infantry. Anyhow, Ghost Recon is amazing. Very realistic, and very good graphics (most of the time, for both qualities). It includes a wide arsenal of REAL weapons, although I wish the makers would've incorporated specific inventory options for EVERY Ghost soldier. In explanation, each soldier has a specific primary weapon, and a minimal selection of secondary weapons. Hence, if a soldier has an M249, it can't be replaced with an M-60. I think that sucks, because a good soldier with a bad weapon doesn't count for much. Ghost Recon uses a rather wide variety of missions, each one pretty much entirely different from the others. One slight downfall is the fact that you can't use any vehicles. But, the US/NATO vehicles and soldiers you're protecting will also fight, rather than just sit there and get slaughtered like in some other games. After the Georgia/Russia campaign, the game continues onto an 8-mission Ethiopian conflict. Be careful at the beginning, though; some of the Ethiopian innocents look just like the enemy soldiers (I learned that the hard way).
Multi-player mode ain't all that bad. You can fight each other, work together on missions (but they have to be unlocked by being beaten in single-player mode), or work together against randomly-placed AIs in any of the mission maps. In multi-player, you can choose your equipment (for the most part) from a wide variety of weapons from around the world, at least for your primary firearm. Your secondary, though, is accompanied to the primary, and you don't have nearly as much choice. Multi-player is really pretty cool, but I warn you that it's only you and the other person fighting for the good guys, except for the mission-critical Allied forces. In other words, it's only you and him/her; no squad.
Like the original Ghost Recon, I'm gonna purchase the sequel without even renting (and I bet I won't regret it)!

Being a huge fan of the Tom Clancy video game series, I bought this without playing it first. BAD IDEA. The idea is very cool, being able to control every member of your squad, but it just comes across stupid. Even on easy, the game is still hard. Not because of the missions, but because you get shot 2 or 3 times and your dead, but you have to shot enemies at least 5 or 6 times before they die. And another thing, SNIPER RIFLES ARE FOR ONE-SHOT TAKE DOWNS. Even with a direct hit with a sniper rifle on an enemy, they wont go down until at least 3 or 4 shots. And another incredibly annoying and stupid aspect of this game, the missions are incredibly short and require no thought at all. Every mission: Follow this arrow and shoot things. Thats basicly every mission. The missions themselves are incredibly easy, but the fact that if you get shot once then your screen goes blurry and you can't see, while enemies shoot you about 2 more times and your dead. Then you come back alive as another team member RIGHT IN THE LINE OF FIRE and have no time to time to even reload. And another thing, the "storylines" are terrible! Not to mention the in-game graphics are terrible for a PS2 game. And possibly the most annoying aspect of Ghost Recon, you can't see your gun! You see cross-hairs, that's it. First person shooters are supposed to be able to see a gun!

Great tacsim

This is one of those games you have to get if you love tactical sims. The graphics were agreeably not the best but the gameplay and atmosphere were top notch. Getting a new character after completing optional missions was a plus, as was being able to improve their stats after they successfully complete missions. All in all a VERY EXCELLENT game.

Games with snipers can never be bad.....

I picked this game up a coupel weeks ago. So far I've done all the training and simulated missions. I've also done about 5 actual missions.

First the dislikes. The night visions goggles are not the greatest. You have to remember the game is set in 2004. So when you see an enemy target it only shows up as a green silhouette. It makes it hard to tell if they are looking at you or not. Second, you shouldn't be able to kill an enemy by shooting him in the arm. third, Some of the graghics/weapons damage is off. At times I miss an enemy soldier by just a couple feet with a granade and he won't die. Other times I miss by much more and they croak. On that same graphic note. I would of liked some of the tank damage to be more vicious. When you hit a tank with a anti-tank weapon it just stops and catches fire. That's no fun, I would of liked to see something like a large explosion or a turret flying off. Like in iraqi freedom footage. Last but not least. If you kill all the enemies on a mission the mission is complete. The game should just toss bad guys at you till you complete the mission objectives.

Now to the good stuff. I love the squad based action. You can have your team heading to one area while the other team takes care of another. You can switch to any soldier in your two teams. So if your cornered by enemy fire you can switch to your team with the sniper and take care of that problem. you can setup the teams with any type of soldiers you want. You can even switch some of there weapons before the mission begins. The sound of the diffent weapons is very realistic. From the silenced weapons to the SAW machine guns. Another like is the realistic damage your troops can take. Get shoot in the body a coupel times and you can go on. I've been hit once, probably in the head, and died. The music is not the greatest, but adds to the sense of danger. Especially when you accidently run into russian troops and shoot it out.

Overall the game is a must for Tom Clancey and special ops fans. If your tired of RPG's or games where your a wanna be gangster, give this a try.

Good alternative to Red Faction

Ghost Recon is the opposite of FPS games like Red Faction, which feature head-on combat, all out havoc, and a 2 player mode that moves at crackhead speed.

I'm not familiar with the PC version, but you can clearly see why it excelled on that platform. The 1p mode is basically a strategic battlefiend game where you command 2 small squads of elite commandos. (Apparently the PC versions had a bigger battlefiend and 3 squads). The story of the game (as if that really matters) is that Russia is looking to put the old Soviet Union back together by invading their neighbors and taking over. Uh huh. You're dispatched to places like Georgia, Estonia, Latvia, etc. I think Clancy basically signs his name to these games and lets them do whatever. Smart man.

You can control any of the six soldiers on the board at a time, switching between squads to engage in battle, retreat, etc. You determine the type of personnel you'll need for each mission and assign them a weapons kit. This is a great option as you choose from riflemen (grunts), snipers, demolitions experts and support (heavy machine guns, etc).

The combat is more realistic, meaning gun battles don't last long and once you reveal yourself out in the opening, you're dead. There's all kind of terrain: mountains and wooded forests, cities, villages, ravines, beaches. The camouflaging is excellent, with each shaking branch of a tree looking like an enemy from far away. The sound is excellent and the game feaures an impressive selection of real guns.

However, in the end this game was a bit too easy. Half the time you're fighting some really ragtag rebels, and even if you die, once you get an idea of where the enemies and tanks and hostages are on each board, you can zip right through as they don't change behavior much. With night vision goggles, high powered rifles and even RPGs you can pick off entire squads from three football fields away. It has its appeal, but expect a different kind of combat than most FPS.

This is definitely recommended though. For one, it throws 8 bonus missions from Desert Siege, not featured on the original PC game. These games take a different story (war in Eritrea, I believe) and feature battles on beaches and in the desert.

The 2p mode is excellent. It's one on one, heavy on the stealth and surprise, and features very short gun battles. You won't last long standing in front of each other firing M 60s. I like the red mist and the blurred first person view when you get shot.

It's fun, it's bloody, it takes a bit of thinking.

Definately worth buying not a ground breaker though.

You cannot say it is easy (no one should ever complete a new game on the easiest setting anyway), and you cannot say it is perfect. I like the realism of crawling about and the high likelihood of getting your face blown when you break cover. Not seeing your own gun is a downer but you don't turn down a chocolate sponge cake if it hasn't got sprinkles on it. If anyone says they don't like it because they think it is too realistic then they need slapping for two reasons. The first is the realism of actually dying quickly when you get shot is a huge plus for this game and the scenery (tree movements) will have you jumping and shouting "there's a guy over there...ah no its a tree...there's a man...oh no its a swaying bush". The second rationale for slapping is that it is not 100% realistic anyway, you can shoot people point blank in the chest with a .50 caliber rifle and they will sway about and die slowly and there are invisible walls at the edge of the map. ...
PLUS - pretty realistic and not too easy
- multiplayer co-op is fun with mates
- sounds and scenery add suspense
- can quicksave in missions
- Many many lovely guns
- longevity and overall coolness
MINUS
- Have to unlock maps in single player for multiplayer use
- Multiplayer versus mode is a bit awkward and slow
- You often have to learn maps by dying and retrying which can be frustrating
- to survive you often have to shoot at indistinguishable black dots (enemies) rather than storming in which can be boring

VERDICT: Definately get it, but don't write home about it.

Cheers

I am a Clancy fan, but this is my first intro to the game side. First looks, it is very different from normal shooters. I especally enjoy the squad based fighting. The amount of people counteracts the lack of health, because it is easy for one person to die, and how you can only use two weapons that you start out with. This of course makes it all the more realistic, a pleasant change from the world of James Bond, not dissing the series. However, after you are done with the game, there is no point in going on. When you are in multiplayer mode, you and your buddy are not on squads like in single player. The levels are structured enough so that it is to repetitive to play them again on a higher level. All in all, it is a good buy, if you are willing to deal with limited multi-player mode.
