Homeworld at the time of release was the first and most successful use of a totally 3D strategy engine. If for no more reason than to see it done, all serious computer gamers out there should pick this title up. But there are quite a few more reasons to grab this title.
Although both sides, the Tidanii and the Kushan, have the same ships, the difference in their apperance is enough to make things interesting. Not to mention, like any good Sci-Fi title, the main enemy is by no means the only enemy. Your standard fleet will run into multi-beam frigates, swarmers and so many more fun to kill targets. And watching your fleet clash with another is enough of a spectacle that you might lose track of the rest of the game.
Tactics are strong in this game, there can be no doubt. The basic set up is that of a pyramid. Fighters can kill capitol ships but are killed by corvettes. Corvettes can kill fighters but are food for capitol ships. BUt don't let all that fool you. If you send a well enough supported team of anything, it can fight its way through any opposition.
I have read a few reviews on this and Homeworld 2's page that said the game was too hard. I guess I just play a little different because I had only slight trouble getting through the campaigns of both games. This game can be considered hard if players do not carefully husband their fleets. Homeworld's fleets carry over and losing even a small frigate can greatly effect the next level. Also, invest in lots of slavage corvettes. By the end of the game, I had over 100 captured enemy capitol ships. Trust me, it was a blast!
Finally, and perhaps most important, Homeworld has the most hauntingly beautiful style. The backgrounds are vibrant and evocative. The storyline is almost movie quality and grabs you. And the music, which cannot be complimented enough, is without compare in the gaming world. Trust me folks, this game deserves game of the year.

Homeworld is one of the best games I've ever played. I first picked it up 3 years ago but was unable to finish it due to time constraints. I'd bought the Game of the Year edition and the soundtrack is great and the Strategy Guide is helpful. A year ago I sold the game and guide, (but not the OST). I've had a yearning to finally finish the game, as well as play the two sequels, (Cataclysm and Homeworld2), so I got online and started looking for a used edition.
Lo and behold I find that the Game of the Year edition is available from Gamestop through our favorite online store Amazon. I have visions of my freshman year playing HW with the guide and actually finshing the game this time, so I order it.
Imagine my dismay when the game I receive is not, in fact, the Game of the Year edition of my fond memories, but a cheaper, release version. Many game companies do this. They repackage their most popular games and send them out as "Classics" or "Best Sellers". In this particular instance, Sierra Entertainment has re-release the "Game of the Year Edition of Homeworld" as a "Sierra Best Seller Series" game. This version does NOT include the strategy guide. It does NOT include the OST. It doesn't even include the game's manual which, as I recall, was quite significant, containing much of the story line. No, my friends, this version of the game does not even include a jewel case for the CD-ROM. It's a box, with a CD in a sleeve, that's all.
The game is still great, and I'm ordering the strategy guide used, but I've given Gamestop bad feedback because they apparently didn't feel obligated to let potential customers know that they were being misled.
So if you're looking for the Game of the Year Edition of Homeworld, DO NOT look to GameStop for your answer. Find it somewhere else on Amazon, or online, or even in an EB Games or other "real world" store.
Good luck and Happy Gaming!
Great game.. but..

This is definitely one of the best games I've ever played. The story line is fantastic, the cut scenes are wonderful with their hand drawn look, gameplay and control is unmatched except by the sequel, the graphics are amazing, and the sound -music, characters' voices and sound effects - are absolutely amazing. If you're looking for a great, challenging game, Homeworld is just what you're looking for. However... if you're looking for the sound track that comes with the game, the sound track that the picture on the item for sale's box clearly says "Soundtrack included!", don't buy this. I just received it in the mail, opened the packaging and felt slightly tricked as I saw a different box with no "Soundtack included!"... The music in this game really is that good. Even though I already own the game, I really wanted this soundtrack, and would gladly pay twenty dollars for it. So this review is mainly to Amazon and eShopUSA: don't trick your customers by selling more to people than they are getting, it's bad business as this is the last time I'm buying from you.

Greeting people. Home World 1 is one of the best RTS (real time strategy) games that I have ever played. It is absolutely awesome and I think that everyone should have it. I will most definately rank this game 5 out of 5 *****. This game is worth its money. I am looking to purchase it again because I have played it for so long that my original CD I bought when the game came out 5 years ago is so scratched up. I am even using a burned copy of my original right now and even my burned copy is getting scratched up.
I at the moment in Home World1 am in the Lost Souls clan. My name is ViciousLS. I design and develope strategies for the game. I have designed over 5 strategies within the past year. One is SSS known as Sphere's Scout Strategy. The other is VGS, the VicaGaran Strategy. I have gotten more than my money's worth of this game and I can assure you that everyone who plays it right now has as well.
The people of Home World range from ages 10 all the way to 60. They all get along. There are also many clans. One clan consists of just people 35 years of age and older. They are known as the OMO (Old Men Online) They however, play many many games besides HW1. HW1 far out ranks HW2. Many of us HW1 people do not like HW2 because of its lack of strategic planning and the skills needed to rush the enemy and over come what he or she might have in store for us. Some of us HW1 players get on TeamSpeak, a voice chat. We play the game and stay on the voice chat to coordinate and plan attacks in the game. I myself have voice chatted with many of the people from HW1 and many from other countries. These countries include: USA, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Poland, Germany, UK, Holland, Bosnia, Belguim, France, and Russia. As you can see, it is indeed a wide variety of countries and it is very fun to chat with people of different cultures and to experience how they play on HW1. I a 16 and have chatted on voice chat and played in HW1 with many many people throughout my career. In time we grow and learn to respect eachother in the game. There are some wiseasses and morons in the game yes.. But most of us still have respect for others. New players are allways welcomed by most and I hope that if you get this game, to PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! Learn the basics of the game... Play the single player missions... Read the manual, it provides a good knowoledge of the game.
I hope to see you soon playing HW1!

This is a game that as far as I know no other game equals. I have been playing this game for around two months now and is the only one that I still find myself inserting in my computer. The graphics are superb and if you have a four speaker sustem with a quality sound card the game really excells. This is a great game that has terrific single player campaign and also the single senarios are excellent as well. The multiplayer is quite entertaining if you can get past the junvenile chatter among your fellow gamers while the game is going on. This game is best also with a quality accelerator card such as a ge force because with literally 100s of ships in space at one time it can tax your system. Now a hundred ships in space seems that it may be hard to control your fleet but with the easy hotkeys and drag sweeping enabled in the game it is not, but it is difficult to achiee victory though. I have played to date 43 different titles and this is by far the best I have come across.Enjoy it is worth the $40 also by the deluxe edition of the game you receive a players guide and a nice cd of the music and a trailer for their soon to be released follow-up Cataclysm (I think the spelling is correct).

Homeworld combines the latest 3d effects and a great story line. with over 70 ships at your disposial it makes mutiplayer and single player fun. However with the lower grade cpus and moniters this great game can turn annoying with single digit frame rates on the min procceser power level. it takes half a day to complete a single mission! Also for members of Aol mulit player (except for skirmishes) are not possible! In my mind home world will the foundation from the next generation of games and beyond.
Homeworld is a fabulous game!

If you like Sci-Fi, RTS, 3D combat, ect., you will love Homeworld. It has all of the above, and combines it with an amazing 3D graphics engine. And, top it off with an award-winning music track. All in all, Homeworld is a great game.
The story of Homeworld is of exiles who are living on a desert planet. After building a great Mothership to command them on a journey back to thier Homeworld, they find thier ancient enemy. The storyline is intense, and captures you into the game.
I would strongly recommend this to anyone, 5-105.
Very hard, to pick up but great anyways...

This game is about conquest, exporation and it's got ever thing you needed for a great RTS. But the game is so hard to pick up I stopped playing it the first day. But with age it become a echo in the back of my mind I could remember how hard it was to even figure how to play. But a year later I rediscovered it and now it is a lot easier, probably because I am older now, but we will never know.
3/5 For the tutorial: As for me, it was hard to pick up like I said, and it is still pretty hard, but hey.
5/5 For the music: I am, one of the few teenagers out there, who hates Rap music. But I think anyone even Rap lovers will love the music.
4/5 For the graphics: They looked cool I was breathless with the destuctation of there homeworld in the like 4th mission. But some of the weapons pulse could have looked better.
5/5 For the story: This is what I look for in a game storyline, if it didn't have one. sorry not paying for it, not even if it was a dollar.
My final reveiw of this game, it's got a great storyline, perfact voice overs. But as for the tutorial it was sucky as in not enough descipetion. But the battle action is very cool to watch, the movies are amazing. As for the last word, not the best game to go and pick it right up. But hey, you have to to buy it.
Your Comrade, and your Brother-In-Arms, Gen.Ratman.

I'm surprised whenever I read a game review. The reviews are usually too long and don't spend enough time covering the disadvantages of games. Plus, there's a bias in that many of the folks who write a review are those who seem to have had a positive experience. I played the first six missions of Homeworld. The game is interesting and has potential, but I found the user interface to be terribly awkward and cumbersome. I played the game "Starcraft" and loved it. As for Homeworld, I learned the rules and all, but it didn't seem like much strategy was involved -- just seemed like a matter of building more ships to kill the enemy, and then working the controls to get your ships to go where you want. My advice is to play a demo of this game before forking over the cash. If you like this stuff, then great. If the user interface becomes less cumbersome, then I'll probably buy future versions. That's all.

after downloading the demo, I was immediately hooked. The graphics, sound and ambiance in general transported me into everything I could imagine space would be. Just flying around and exploring kept my interest for a couple of hours...the tutorials were easy and interesting, too.
However...when I bought the actual game a immersed myself in real gameplay, I got pounded time and time again - never made it past the 3rd level. The enemy in this game doesn't fool around and immediately swarms you with zillions of ships and relentless firepower...much more than your resources can handle for more than a few minutes.
I don't have the attention span to slave over a strategy guide in order to simply survive in a game in which I'm supposed to be having fun.
