Homeworld is an AMAZING game. The graphics are stunning, the singleplayer great, the multiplayer better! Anyone who has fears of it being too complex can lay their fears to rest. The games has a helpful manual that explains not only how to play the game but the games history as well. Homeworld is an innovative game, I am getting Homeworld Cataclysm, the Expansion, soon, and I can hardly wait for Homeworld 2. Homeworld truly is the game of the year!

Once the game began, I knew I picked the right game. I've played C&C, TA, Red Alert, and other RTS-type game, but this takes the prize. The graphics is unbelieveable. Trust me on this one. I've never scene anything like this. The game itself is great too. The tutorial in this game should be utilized by many other games, so that one can simply press 'Play' and then just play. It's that easy. But then again, it will provide the enthusiast with a lot of challenges. Overall, this game is the best I've seen in years. Yes, it's better than all the RTS game I've played in the past. Forget Sims, forget Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, forget Quake III, stuff your pockets with $40 and go out and get this game.....NOW!
4.5 Stars; Still a great game

Let me get my gripes out of the way first: The learning curve. I'm all for hard games and learning them. I like challenges, which is part of the reason I dropped out of college 9 hours away from graduation. :) Anyway, this game is hard to learn. It has very easy controls, very easy to play, but to actually be successful, expect to find yourself repeating early missions constantly. That can be somewhat frustrating.
Also, both sides have the exact same story, with absolutely no deviation whatsoever. This makes the replay value somewhat less because why play the other side once you have finished the game with the other?
That aside, this game has broken new grounds for RTS games. The use of the 3D environment is breathtaking. We finally are able to play a space RTS in full 3D, unlike the StarFleet Command games that boasted 3D play but delivered 2D only.
The graphics, oh the graphics! The better your 3D Card, the better they look. The ships look real, they look smooth, and they are beautiful. More than just eye candy mind you.
The Multiplayer function is where the game truly excells IMO. Facing a human opponent in a space battle such as this is what we've all dreamed about, or at least those of us who have ever wanted to lead a force like Darth Vader did in the Star Wars movies.
Bottom Line: This is truly a wonderful game, but not perfect. It deserved every award it received, and with the game now at a very affordable price even for you poor college students, it should be a must-own, of course, if you have the system to run the game.
Too hard for causal players

First off: I gave up on Homeworld about one-third though the campaign. Using a small bit of resources, building a few units and carrying those forward to the next mission sounds great but it's very hard in practice. You can't afford to lose many units and I lost them too frequently. After many reloads, I've wimped out. I just can't afford the many hours required to master this game.
That said, this game has a lot going for it. There's a good story and soundtrack. On top of the every-unit-is-precious strategic aspect is the pseudo 3-d playing field which does add tactical depth to the RTS genre although it's plagued by a poor camera scheme that locks the camera to any one of your units. The control scheme is also poor and relies on keyboard input too much.
This isn't a bad game, in fact, there's a lot of depth here. It does require a lot of patience/time to master.

I logged into here and the first thing I see above the review entering box are the words "(maximum of 1,000 words)." Let me tell you right now 1,000 is not nearly enough to describe Homeworld. The game play and strategy superb, the story line epic (the only way to describe it in one word), and the graphics and sound worth selling your soul to get. Homeworld immerses you, engulfes you, it is quite impossible to stop playing.
It's not just the single player mission, though they are were you really get into the storyline, it's the multiplayer games. Some of the people there are legends, they can kill most players in 10 minutes without so much as losing a single scout. This may sound like a deterrant but it's also a challenge, and if you don't want to face a master there are plenty of lessed skilled games that form up. The community is also great, there is a series of forums, web sites and IRC chats that allow you to be part of it even out of the game.
The plot is beautiful in a sense, if any of the relic people need a second career I suggest movie writer. It is sudden and delicate, and with the help of the haunting music twists your emotions like any of the best movies and books. The manual is also a lot fuller than most, providing a "Historical Briefing" which is much more complete than most. Including details on all the Kiith (kushan clans). If you don't buy this game you are missing out on one of the best opportunities in your life!
Succeeds in style

Ok, the storyline is your standard "Battlestar Galactica" - fare - but the execution is great! I bought this game because I was impressed with the graphics on the cover and found that they looked beautiful even on my humble 8meg card. The game is incredibly stylish and very easy to comprehend.
Basically this is Age of Empires in Spaces with the added feature of a 3D Space, which is a big advantage, but makes live more complicated. Instead of just clicking where the units have to go, you always have to add the 3rd vector (not only left/right, but above/below) too, which can become frustating.
Difficulty level is not bad, giving you an even chance to win, but certainly not the first time around.
As said, graphics and sound are impressive. Storyline is ok and realtimestrategy in space is fun. Controls could be better, though.
This is one of the best EVER!

First off, this game is one of the best ten video games of all time bar none. It runs with Castle Wolfenstein 3D, Command and Conquer, Warcraft, Doom, etc. This game is purely AWESOME. From the beginning credits with the Adagio for Strings by Barber blaring in you speakers, you are hooked. The story line is very good BUT THE GAME PLAY IS AWESOME. The genius that made the user interface for this game makes the person who tried to make a usable one in Star Wars Rebellion look like a kindergartner.
The tutorial is a must to take, but after 10 minutes you got it.
I FULLY RECOMMEND THIS GAME. I would also recommend it for kids above 8-9 years old. It is an excellent constructivist game (where players build, generate, and create -- and HAVE TO THINK) There is some destruction but it there is no gore and actually no pictures of humans or aliens throughout. Just spaceships.
If you did not understand this review...I will put it into three words. PLAY THIS GAME! (It rocks)

This game is unlike any other RTS game that is on the market today. Homeworld has a lot more to offer than games of the genre such as Starcraft or Command and Conquer. Never have I been so caught up in a strategy game.
To begin, the graphics of this game are some of the best that I have seen outside of a next-generation video-game platform. Using the unique camera, you can focus on any single ship out of the hundreds you are likely to aquire through the course of the came. Each ship is detailed to perfection, with both their movements and texture mapping. There are many races, each with it's own style of ship, and each style is different. This leads to massive amounts of different looking ships. Never before had I witnessed ships dodge enemy fire on their own. This is completely different than Starcraft or beams fired at the same time. This is all done in a remarkable three-dimensional environment in which you can witness a battle from any angle you choose. The backrounds for the missions are very well done, as well. The nebula and Higaara took my breath away. These al serve to enhance the spactacular mood that is present in this game. These backrounds make your vessels really look like they are floating in an endless void. The graphics are not the only great thing about this game, however.
C&C, in which your forces stand still while they are assualted by the enemy. Never before had I been able to witness every bullet hit the hull of a massive cruiser, or been able to see so many ion-The gameplay and control for this game simply cannot be matched. This game requires much more intellegence than your average RTS. Like many games of it's genre, Homeworld requires you to collect resources and to research new technologies. However, there is a lack of resources, which really makes you plan what you are going to do with them. Your ships transfer from mission to mission, which means no suicide brigades like the ones that can be used in Starcraft. You are constantly ambushed, which only adds to the difficulty. In this game you can aquire vast amounts of ships (over 100), but it is always easy to keep control of them with Homeworld's control system. You can effortlessly rotate the camera and move your ships. The control scheme is very easily learned with the help of the game's excellent tutorial. The game's sixteen missions, while small in number, shouldn't dissapoint. Each is massive and unique. In some missions you may have to destroy asteroids flying at your mothership. In others you have to trade with other races, or destroy an enemy fleet. Each will take several hours to complete and some are not that easy. I clearly rememember the fourteenth mission, in nwhich there are over a hundred ships in a sphere around your target. Every mission has something waiting to jump out and suprise you. Don't expect your mission objectives to remain constant.
This game has one great story, as well. The manual gives an extremely detailed back story, but the game has so much more. You slowly hear more and more as you go along, and it is almost of hollywood quality. It is just full of suprises. The cutscenes between each mission are expertly crafted. They seem hand drawn rather tha done through CG. This just enhances the mood of the game.
How could I not mention the music? Rather than the heavy metal that is used in other strategy games, this game uses the classical music of old. Each piece fits with the section of the game which you are playing, whether it be heated battle or the movements of your ships across a great void. The mood of the game is greatly enhanced by the music. Homeworld's soundtrack is awesome.
This game is simply massive. There are many different ways to play. You can be defensive, only attacking when you are attacked, or you can built a massive force to hunt and destroy your enemies. Bigger isn't always better, as I fouind out on the fifth mission, when I watched 70 scouts be destroyed in a matter of seconds by an ambush of eight assualt frigates.
This game is simply amazing and Relic deserves all the praise that it has recieved with this masterpiece. The bar has been raised for strategy games, and the genre has been changed forever.
greatest game ever

i own about 60 video games. give or take. i have played them forever. I can say, without a doubt, with all ive experianced that this is the best of the lot. I kid you not, ... it is a STEAL for the greatness of this game, the storyline is good enough to make a movie out of. the game play is so smooth and the interface so flawless. This game was Game of the year, Art of the year, and Music of the year for good reason. This game will put you in the VASTNESS of space, and it is all so fun and so easy to learn and its just wonderful. Think of the most fun you've had playing any Real time strategy game and put it in the 3rd dimension. it is simply breathtaking.

This game is absolutely spectacular. I'm sure you've all seen the Death Star and such, but you've never controlled the monster space ship. Now you can. Command 50+ ships, ranging from the 80 ton Scout, to the 800,000 ton Heavy Cruiser, to the biggest ship ever made, the 30 mile long, 5 million ton ship, the Mothership. This is truly an amazing game. The graphics are crisp, but starting to show their age. I can't wait for Homeworld 2 to come out. I'll be one of the first people to buy it. The soundtrack is excellent. The cutscenes are good, and the storyline is absolutely epic. This is one of the best games you can buy for any amount of money.
