preface info:
Played eq1 for 4 years
played horizons, played dark agaes of camalot, played shadowbane, played star wars galaxies... all mmorpg's
So far(level 15 Druid and level 13 Warrior 2 accounts and 2 computers)
my 2 computers are:
2.4G intel, nvidia gforce4 128M, 1G ram, broadband
3.6G intel, nvidia 5700? 256M, 1G ram, broadband
Game runs choppy on balanced settings for the 2.4G and runs smooth except for cities on the 3.6(slight frame lag)
I like it so far.. though they still have not perfected the solo aspect of the game from the adventuring(combat) point of view... in the world of mmorpg's if they make it easy, you will play for a month and get bored... in the better games, it challenges you to perfect your style in order to solo... there are many skills at your disposal as you level to add to your style.. so far in this game I have been able to solo if I want and have had no issues with any of my quests... yes, of course there will be quests that require groups. Thats another aspect of the game...
My sister who has played eq1 for 5 years feels that its difficult to get a "good" group in eq2... I reminded her that that was the same in eq1... what will happen is the younger kids(sorry kids), the instant gratification types and those who simply dont get it, will fall away after a certain level. The players who get a grasp of playing thier characters correctly will move on and grouping will be similar to eq1 where most of the time you will get a good group...
The crafting system is not easy... as it should not be... I have 2 level 10 crafters and so far i find it interesting.
It is way to early for me to rate with certainty but like my title says.... so far, so good...
UPDATE 10/25/06....
Been playing now since launch... Overall EQ2 continues to evolve into a better game... they have revamped the crafting system to make it a bit less tedious... I have been in a guild since December 05 and playing with a set grp of folks definately enhances and extends the ejoyment of the game.
There is still a grind, as all ORPG's have... but if you work on quests as you primary way of playing the levels come as you work through them...
SOE IMO still does these types of games better than the rest...
Uhm.

Why would you want a character transfer from EQ 1 to EQ 2? I'd rather start over and experience the new game as a whole and get a feel for the character I'm playing. That'd be pretty hard to do anyway if they change certain aspects of the game like skills/spells and leveling requirements. This game sounds like it will improve on the original. I'm hoping they make it more friendly to people who like to solo a bit more as they don't have time to be logged on 12 hours a day.

first, let me start off with the purpose of just having 2 cities in eq 2, it does not take away the cultural aspects, each city wld prbbly have its own segregated districts, like elves living in one area where prbbly the people like u and give u better prices, and im sure the city will be easy enough to navigate, and if not, it will be fun getting lost somewhere in the city, and finding your way, also the cities will not be abandoned, since the city will be the meeting place for everyone looking for anything, training, groups etc, so it will always be a hubbub instead of many people stretched out in many cities across Norrath. Point blank, eq set the standard of mmorpg's and any game u see, whether or not you think it is better it is a copy/spin off from eq, and eq takes finesse, skills, strategy and brains to play, and it is far from boring, tedious at times yes, but its designed to give u more things than u cld possibly do so that it keeps you coming back for more, and separates those that play alot and those who dont, some people want a reward for their dedication, some people choose to throw frisbees, others choose to throw guild parties, whatever floats your boat, i and others consider eq a form of entertainment like watching tv, or just hanging, if u choose to throw a frisbee great, if you choose to wath tv great,
all in all, i cannot wait until eq 2 comes out, the world will be massive the things to do spectacular, and i look forward to being in a place where u can never really visit all the zones/areas, ive never ever played a game that can scare the dog crap out of me, make me laugh out in excitment, or even make me angry,
they are not perfect no, but nothing is, and i suspect that the first reviewer did not tell us the whole story about the password, and if you hate eq, well then eq hates you too!

Okay, so no one from EQ1 wants to switch over to EQ2 I can understand alot of people have 200+ hours of play time. But then again whats 200+ hours equal? I put over 260 hours into my EQ1 character, I have a lvl 49 Mage a lvl 62 Enchanter and a lvl 41 Wizard, im dropping evry hour i put into this game for EQ2, I will no longer be left out of big raids from lvl 65 chars, I will be the big raid that LVL 10 chars wish they were on, everyone will say that but the second i open the box and install this game. I will have my[self] planted in my chair for 12+ hours the first day. I will play until my eyes will no longer stay open. Why? Because. It is utterly breathtaking.

You guys are funny, the only ones that are saying how good EQ is ...IS the ones still on it. Which is pretty sad... the game is just a big money racket. They should have stopped after the 3rd expansion ... what came next.... cat people.. moon.... fighting gods ..haha ... give me a break it was a good rpg. Sony wants to keep the masses of whiny customers that will shell out 30 bucks a pop for another off the wall expansion to make the game easier for them, as well ruin the rpgness the game had.. (is that a word =) ). Which I believe if you buy a game and pay $12/month, you should be entitled to "so called" expansion packs for free. Stupid to make someone pay monthly and buy a $50 game ...then to top it off in a few months bring out an expansion that I know is optional ...but puts you on uneven ground next to a guy with expansions..... THEY even deny people their new spells WTF! ... Someone should sue Sony for putting out a game ...which was led to believe that was going to be fun online ...then pop out expansions that makes their original game basically unplayable ...... if they are going to bring out expansion packs ....then the fair thing to do ...for those who like the original game without the lame books and ridiculous new story line ...is to have new servers with each upgrade, likewise have the game in its different past states. And I know ..there will be those lame people defending EQ that has been on there for 4 years ...that think making a character is a pain , rather than fun that will argue against my comments ..and I welcome it... just makes me laugh. Because they are the same people who whine about the game being to hard, and love the books that port their lazy butt around the game. These people should be in a chat room.

this is a very tecknical game, very huge! it is actually very intlectually competitive because everyone wants to be the best. It takes you about 10 minutes to walk from one side of any city to the other side, personally i think thats awsome. you can probably do almost anything and for you mmorpg fans out there this is the best one!!!!!!!!!!!!
Two cities is going to suck

A lot has been written about the effect of only having 2 cities and piling all the races up into either one and putting everyone on the side of good or evil. Yes they say the cities will be huge and there will be different neighborhoods where the races start off. But that is not the same as having separate racial cities in different parts of the world. I don't care how they describe it (a disaster wiped out all the other cities) it's just going to be lame.
I gave it 3 stars because it's not out yet and can't really make a judgement yet.
I also agree largely with harpandlore in that all the expansions of EQ made it so easy to port all over the world and all the expansions took away from the original "Tolkenish" feel of the game. Porting up to the moon made EQ feel like a sci-fi game and being able to port all over made the world feel much smaller and took away the feel of traveling to far off lands for adventure. All the additional races of cat-people, lizard men, etc. further detracted from the traditional fantasy RPG setting. I wish EQ would get back to it's roots and try to re-capture the way it was when they began and not get so far off in other directions.
I want a dark elf city, deep underground in Neriak where the Dark Elves plot their evil deeds and avoid the daylight as well as other races as Drow elves should.
I want a halfling village, tucked away somewhere in the "shire", hidden from the large cities and big populations. Someplace where I can go to relax and fish like in the early days of the original EQ.
I want a dwarf town, inside a mountain where the dwarves mine for gold, gems and other metals. And an elven town in the forest like the original one in the trees.
I know how much work they said they have put into making the cities huge and all but they should have put in half as much work on them and still made these other cities as well. It's much more interesting with a multi-polar world with different homelands that you travel to that makes it an immersive world. This is what made the original EQ so successful and it looks like they are getting away from that.
Only for people with a lot of time!

I played EQ for over three years...awesome in the beginning, lots of people in all the zones , you could log on and find a group right in your own home town. That was then, now you can go to zones and be the only one there. Almost all the major cities are completely empty, almost entire continent is barren except for the new zones. You have to invest a lot of time in order to make enough "friends" to find and group with when you start. Solo play is very difficult at higher levels. Everyone gets a solo strategy, and can do well at it but the game gets repetitive that way. If you only have an hour or so to kill a night then EQ is not your game. I wish they would make it so people can log on and play around for an hour and advance your character solo, and if they want offer some more enticements to make the game more "groupable" but they do not. I found myself getting a character that I could solo with, but did not have much to offer a group and therefore was stuck in that mode. Good to luck to all you people with more time on your hands, I wish I had more time to play and group the game would be more fun, but to those who do not have much time (which is a good thing actually) find something off the shelf like Neverwinter Nights that you can turn/off like a switch and not spend the entire night looking for group (LFG) lol.

This game is only worth getting if you dont have a steady job and have very few social interactions with others. The game itself has decent eye candy, but it is so overly involved (with a VERY poor interface) that you'll spend hours trying to get anything meaningful done. There is more and more competition in the online game market and games like Everquest and {EDIT} only cater to the ultra hardcore "role-players". Check out to see the kind of experience your in for if you play this game. As a beta tester for {EDIT} and a long time {EDIT} I can assure you that both of those games are superior unless you like spending hours making spices to raise your "Spicemaking" ability by a point. You could finish a masters degree with the effort it takes to play Everquest.
This game brought me back.

I started EQ1 when Kunark came out. It was ok, but after a while it really lost something. I was drug back after I quit, because there were new expansions that were supposed to have made it better. They didn't.
EQ2 has fixed everything I didn't like about the original and then some. Sure, there's still some bugs, but it's only the first week of being released. Things are getting fixed constantly. (If you want to talk bugs, just look at any other MMORPG. It's nothing new.) If you didn't like EQ1 but like MMORPGs, give this one a chance. I'm finding myself pleasantly surprised.
