Everquest for Dummies

Let me start by saying that Everquest 2 is a well-developed game. Now I don't necessarily mean that it's great as far as fun factor. It's just an "ok" game. There really isn't a wow factor to it. Really this game shouldn't be called Everquest 2, because it lost so many excellent elements that the first Everquest had. The main appeal to most gamers for EQ 1 was the level of difficulty. EQ 2 doesn't deliver in that department. Everything is basically laid right out there in front of you. (I.E. waypoints, huge colored arrows, etc...) Most of you hardcore EQ 1 people will know, just as I do, that back in 1998 - 1999 when EQ 1 first began, there was nothing easy about it. I think that EQ 2 is basically an Everquest for dummies. I don't like the fact that SOE took so many things from World of Warcraft and implemented into their game. That takes away from the originality.
The bottom line is, Everquest 2 is well developed. But saying that doesn't necessarily prove that it was well thought out. World of Warcraft is probably the best choice for an MMORPG right now, simply because Blizzard understand fun factor, unlike SOE.

This review is not about the game. Since neither I nor anyone else has played it yet, noone is really qualified to give a review of the game at this time. This review is in regard to the dozens of other pointless reviews, comments, and/or questions regarding the game.
Regarding the first, if you haven't played the game, then why should your review hold any relevance at all? Everquest 2 is a game independent of its predecessor, so having played the first game does not give you the right to bash or glorify this one. In regard to the equally needless comments and questions on the game, there are numerous chat rooms and topic boards dedicated to all things Everquest, where your questions may be answered far more quickly and thoroughly and your comments may recieve however much consideration they warrant.
As it stands, the numerous reviews posted so far do nothing but clutter this page and hide relevant articles. So please, in the future, carefully consider whether your comments, questions, and otherwise truly need to be posted on this site.
And please don't respond to this review, as that will simply create more useless junk.

I'm impressed by the graphics of EQ2, but after playing up to about level 20, I got bored. I was disappointed by the removal of many special and quirky features of various races. People who played high level druids or bards or enchanters in EQ1 will be very unhappy with EQ2. Forget about kiting, chain casting pets, or even spirit of wolf (now nerfed to uselessness). Cleary there was an attempt to make this game easier to play for everyone, but much less interesting for the expert.

I just thought I'd warn people that if you buy a used copy of the game, and the original owner set up an account and tried it, you cannot get an account with the used discs at all, because the account key/cd key can only be used once. You will have to buy a new copy of the game. Similarly, if you want to create a second account for a spouse or for double-boxing, again you have to buy a second copy of the game. You cannot even add EQ II to an existing station account without a fresh key from a new copy of the game. bleh
Best MMO so Far

I have been playing Everquest 2 since the second say after launch and I have to say it is the best MMO I have played so far. While it is definitely not for everyone I will give a brief rundown of some of its highlights over other games. In terms of graphics, diversity, and versatility of play it leads the pack, in my opinion.
When it comes to the game's graphics I can say with confidence that it beats out all other MMO's that I have seen. The zones, outdoor and dungeon, are beautifully made and have great detail. The most obvious areas of detail are in characters and NPC's. You have almost total control over your character's appearance when you create them; everything from hair color to the size of the nose to the apparent age is entirely selectable. There is a great variety of races to choose from, sixteen in all, each of which is varied in size and proportions. All the equipment is also individualized to give a great variety of shapes and colors on almost everyone that runs by you. The monsters where not neglected with dozens and dozens of different monster types; from tiny flying fairies to towering giants that you have to look almost straight up upon in order to see anything but their boots.
The diversity in this game is also simply amazing. As stated earlier there are sixteen playable races. Combine this with a choice of twenty-four adventuring jobs and nine crafting jobs you have literally HUNDREDS of combinations. The adventuring classes are exquisitely fleshed out with more than forty spells and/or abilities each. And for folks interested in the crafting side each of the nine crafting classes had hundreds upon hundreds of recipes to craft almost anything you can wear, carry, use, or sell to others. The world has amazing diversity as well with over fifty zones (last I counted anyways it was over well over fifty and climbing every major update). And if you enjoy questing, I will tell you that EverQUEST lives up to its name with over TWO THOUSAND quests at last count.
This game will also please about any play style that you can enjoy. The developers have restocked the zones so that all types of players can find and kill monsters for their particular play style; from solo players to massive raids. The games monsters have been specifically balanced and the `consider' system reflexs that so that they are labled from solo, to group, and epic-2's, -3's, and -4's (for the size of raid that is recommended). Those that like to craft should be glad to hear that the crafting system is as in-depth as the adventuring. Every character can have both types of classes and both adventuring and crafting have fifty levels to travel through.
So to finish off, this is one of the best MMO's out there. It may not be for the beginning players as it has a huge amount of content to absorb as you begin. But for the experienced gamer this game has enough content to keep you busy for months, if not years. And the developers keep adding content fast; faster than I can keep up with anyways. So have fun, and look me up on the Permafrost server.
Lotsa bells and whistles, but where's the beef..?

The general consensus amongst the MMORPG community would seem to be this: EverQuest II is yet another example of Sony's fanatical obsession with eye candy over content.
There's little to no "meat" here... in fact, Sony's own online websites can't seem to provide any sort of storyline behind EverQuest II, other than it being set 400 years or so from the time of the original EverQuest, the moon of Luclin blew up, and now the entire huge, sprawling world of Norrath has been reduced to two measly starting cities, on one continent...
...sounds pretty cheesy to me. Wanna see another red flag..? The sheer size of the installation of this game positively SCREAMS that it's loaded with resource-sucking bells and whistles, which Sony is well-known for focusing on when their overall storyline and content are weak.
Most veteran EverQuest players have watched Sony Online Entertainment completely RUIN the original EverQuest, ever since late 2002 when Sony bought out Verant (the originators of that once-classic MMORPG game). Given what we've all seen from SOE over the past few years (the destruction of EverQuest, the absurdly pointless Star Wars Galaxies, horrible customer service, and insultingly shameless greed), I see absoultely no reason whatsoever to believe that EverQuest II will be anything short of an overpriced, inane memory hog of a "game" that will ultimately leave the player feeling unsatisfied and cheated.
...
The most highly anticipated game this year.

As a (recently) former manager of an EB Games store, I can't even begin to tell you how many times I was asked about this game. Among games like FFXI, FFX2, and Halo 2, Everquest 2 leads the swells of anticipation. While I agree that EQ is highly socially oriented, very involving, and very addicting, on November 17, regardless of what anyone thinks, you will not be able to find a copy of this game unless you pre-ordered.
Now, from an objective standpoint, there's nothing worse than someone who criticizes games with a closed mind. But why is it that some people find it necessary to babble idiocracies and generate [lame] (for lack of a more appropriate word) quotes like, "Soloing in Everquest is like removing a philips-head screw with a flat-tipped screwdriver; not a problem with the tool, but with the mechanic."
Should I even waste my time breaking down how stupid and anecdotal this quote is? If you want to solo in EQ, do it, if you don't like it, don't. People like different things and there is nothing wrong with 'soloing.' I know EQ is a MMORPG, you are supposed to interact with other players, but you don't have to. Quite frankly someone who gets so upset about soloists in EQ really should get outside and meet more physical people, and learn a new phrase like, "Physical Human Interaction."
At any rate, the game is sure to be a hit, sure to sell out, sure to have some problems, and sure to have some critics.
If I had to wager, I'd say that more people will be pleased with their purchase than not.

Everquest 2 has to be the best game ever made. I play the BETA for it now and the graphics are better than any other game but it is still like the first one except for a few changes.

I started off playing World of Warcraft but decided to try a few other MMORPGs so I bought Lineage II and Everquest 2. The graphics for Everquest II are really stellar with the exception of the character development. I found that the characters faces tend to look smashed no matter how much I played around with the face controls. My elven characters all looked female even when I created a male character.
The pace is extremely slow in EQ II. I miss being able to interact with whatever mobs I choose to interact with. The beginning stages of the game unfold much like a book that you are reading as opposed to just jumping in and swimming like you do in WOW.
I did like the fact that you can get your own apartment and decorate it. WOW has yet to implement anything close to this. Also, the spell effects in EQ II are amazing.
Overall, I was left longing to return to World of Warcraft. The interface and fun pace of WOW just isn't quite present in EQ II. EQ II also lacks the PVP aspect that WOW has. I play on a PVE server on WOW and I love being able to engage other players in PVP when I choose to do so. Raids on other towns that are defended by players from the other faction is exciting! You aren't just playing againsts NPCs like you are in EQ II.
I give EQ II 1 star for the gameplay but 3 for the overall aspects of the game because the graphics are very realistic and beautiful.
Downloading the update forever & cant play during.

I pay for the game online... do the download, sign up for the account, sign up for the monthly billing.... that was 2 1/2 weeks ago. Still haven't gotten to play the game yet or even make a character. Why? because I have about a month or more left of downloading the 'update' to go yet. I have about 245.65 hours left (or more)of downloading to do (about a month or so left?!) before I can even see what the game is like, looks like or even see what a character is like. What a waste of money (mostly the monthly billing I have to pay for). I'm tired of staying online to do endless downloading of an update and not getting to do anything else but watch the clock tick slowly downward (245 - 330 hours still left??!!). Oh and yes, I have a great computer.
