This is THE best fighting game you'll ever own.

If you already haven't tried this game, run to the nearest arcade and play it!! This game ROCKS in terms of graphics, gameplay, and replayability. Everyone knows Virtua Fighter started the whole "3D" thing, but Tekken takes it up a notch. Gameplay is VERY fast and fluid. It's like you're actually fighting. Graphics are the best i have ever seen in the genre, escpecially on PS2 hardware(in your FACE XBOX!!). I'm gonna reserve my copy so i don't hafta wait in line! Do as i say, BUY THIS GAME!!!!!

The Difference is in the details...

I won't mince words here. The single thing that makes tekken4 stand out in my mind isn't graphics or even characters (although I do find it interesting that neither DOA3 or VF4 have any fighters who use taekwondo, the most popular MA in the world). It is gameplay.
Put simply, tekken4 is just plain faster. It isn't long combos and flagrant flashy movements or flying through the air with unreal techniques, it is good ol' rock em sock em back and forth punching and kicking at its best. A few things make this work more for tekken4 than the other two contenders around right now (those being Dead or Alive 3 and Virtua Fighter 4).
First, the moves in tekken come out much faster. It seems as if Namco got better motion capture actors because the characters kick and punch faster than in the other games. The fastest moves in tekken4 are 8 frames and the fastest one I can come up with in VF4 is about 12 or 13. Second, tekken4 uses all 4 buttons for strikes. This has two advantages. The first is that you can sort of put yourself in the place of your fighter easier since you know 1 will always be your left punch and 4 will always be your right kick. Combos just come out more naturally and it makes the gameplay much more fun. There is no "kick kick kick kick" it is "left kick, left kick, left kick, right kick," and I like that better. Second, and much more important, it means there isn't any guard button. How do you guard then? Simply hold back on the controller! Most people don't understand how much this speeds up gameplay. You see, when there is an actual guard button, and you only have one thumb to press the buttons with (on the console controller), you need to first release guard then press the strike button. It slows things up quite a bit and also gives the computer and other players the chance to get you in that transition period. This would be my biggest beef with VF4, an excellent game ruined by the controller options. I guess you could guard with left and right buttons, but I believe that just holding back on the controller is much more efficient. Besides the buttons, the movements are WAY faster. The sidestep in DOA3 and VF4 is pathetic, you can't dodge %&%# with it. In tekken4 it is actually fast enough to use effectively. Finally, tekken4 has more fighters with legitimate "fighting" styles. Four of them are some type of karate, one is vale tudo, one is boxing, two are jeet kune do (if you count Lee Chaolin as JKD, which I do), one is wrestling, and one is taekwondo. Not to rag on any practicioners or fans of MA styles like capoerra or whatever yoshimitsu practices, but their fighting doesn't seem to fit in with the furious exchanges between kazuya and jin or steve and hwoarang. And the wing chun practiced by xiaou is the biggest load of crud I have ever seen. There ARE actually really beautiful moves in wing chun that look like they would hurt (and do hurt) as well as normal combat moves like punching and round kicks, but I guess Namco didn't want to put them in. But still, even with a few freak characters in the mix, the fighting is a far more realistic than the stuff in VF4 or DOA3 which looks like it came right out of "Once Upon a Time In China."

I love the characters (I have to say it Christy is my fav so far-the guys im sure will just love the outfitt she wears alone LOL) and this game has awesome backgrounds with water and stairs and all kinds of obticles to fight near. Anyway happy gaming to u all. :)

Compared to both Virtua Fighter 4s, you would definitely want this fighting game. Here are the reasons why.

~ Graphics- Pushes FAR past all other fighting games except for the Soul Caliburs! -10/10

~Fast gameplay; if you hit the ground, you can instantly get back up, without having to wait on the ground. -10/10

~It has many many MANY battle fields. -10/10

~The storyline is excellent; feauturing one main character returning from Tekken 2. -10/10

~Some of the musics are pretty good, others okay, but overall, they aren't that good. -03/10

~You start out with 10 characters, and about ten more to unlock. That is about average. -08/10

~Only 6 new characters! 4 of them are just new characters with the same moves as old characters! -02/10

~There's a new version of the mode not featured in any other fighting game series; the Tekken Force. -10/10

~Doesn't take too much up on your memory card; only about 70 Kilobytes. -09/10

Overall, I'd say, if you want a fighting game better than Virtua Fighter 4 and Evolution, Bloody Roar 3, all Mortal Combats and all Dead or Alives, you should definitely get this fighting game. Right now, it is rated the second best fighting game for Playstation 2; Soul Calibur II is obviously in first place. But trust me, if you are a VF fan, but you didn't like VFE, get your hands on this game.

Tekken 4 an evolution or revolution? Both!

This is the best fighting game ever! I have the japanese version and believe me when I say that this game has no equal.

Graphichs: The graphics are quite simply the best you'll find on the PS2 with highly polygonal characters where you can actually see their muscles movement along with their punchs and kicks and with the addition of Progressive Scan you have the best quality with a HDTV.

Closed-in stages: As for the game's main feature, the walls in each stage are great and diverse with real big stages like the Airport where you have plenty of room to move around or real small ones like the Lab where you must think what move to do next in order to trap the enemy or to avoid getting your [rear] kicked.

Sound: As sound is concerned they range from good to average with a wonderful sound in the Building stage and a horrible sound in the Beach stage.

Tekken Force Assault: The newly introduced Tekken Force Assault Mode is also amazing, you'll find yourself fighting against 500 enemies across 4 stages ranging from a Forest to a Dojo with freedom of movement (which means you can go wherever you want in the screen with no more side scrolling) and battling a boss at the end of each stage, once you complete all of them you unlock the Dojo stage.

FMVs: The FMVs (full motion videos) are what you'd expect from Namco, flawless and with the addition of voice overs the characters gained life and act like they were right by your side. Outstanding to say the least.

In a nutshell: Phew..I don't think there's nothing more to say, right? Except BUY THIS GAME NOW, you won't regret.

i'm going to talk more about the tekken franchise in general than tekken4 specifically. to read about all the new advancements in this franchise's most recent incarnation, look to other reviews.

fighting games are easly my favorite type of videogame. i've played and owned them all. from street fighter 2 to doa3... my all-time favorite franchise is EASILY tekken, and tekken4 definately raises the bar for the whole genre.

i'm not such a total fanboy that i dont appreciate other games. Dead or Alive 3 and Virtua Fighter 4 are both good games in their own respects (especially vf4) but tekken4 blows them both out of the water.

tekken is a game that a beginer can easily pick up and play (the button mashers) but the game is very deep and to truely master a character (let alone all the characters) takes a massive amount of practice. once you fully grasp a character, the moves come intuituvely and fluidly. instead of just hitting buttons, you react as if you were indeed the character you are controlling. watching two players who have mastered their characters fight against eachother is truely a beautiful thing. in the interest of brevity i will try to stop here, suffice to say that tekken4 is truely the greatest fighter ever created that can be enjoyed by both beginers and veterans. BUY IT NOW!

Adds some much needed innovations to the Tekken series

So what's different about Tekken 4 compared to Tekken 3 and Tag-Tournament? Well, the most obvious difference is the addition of walled in arenas. No longer do you have to fight on those weird looking infinite arenas. Now you can pummel your opponent up against walls, phone booths, trees, and many other obstacles. Also new to Tekken 4 is the position change technique. This is a new move that every fighter can perform that allows you to push your opponent where you want them (this can come in handy when being cornered up against a wall). New characters that make their debut in Tekken 4 are Craig Marduk (a huge Vale Tudo fighter that has a much better variety of throws and powerful attacks than Jack ever had), Steve Fox (a boxer who uses mainly punches but possesses incredible speed), and Christie Monterio (a female Eddy Gordo replacement). Most of the older characters have only a few new attacks, but Jin has been changed almost completely. He now uses a form of traditional karate...but don't worry, he's just as fast and powerful as before. The graphics are now more crisp and defined than ever. Few objects in the backround show any signs of blurriness at all. The music of Tekken 4 isn't very memorable, but at least it fits the mood for each stage. Unfortunately, the Tekken Force mode is a fun distraction, but it becomes boring after 10 or 15 minutes of pummeling of waves of cookie cutter goons. The older characters could have used a little more revamping, and I would have liked to see at least 1 or 2 more entirely new characters...but I believe Tekken 4 packs enough new features to satisfy fans of the series. Definitely buy it if fighters are your genre.

Still the People's Champ...But Still Not the King.

Keeping up nicely with the times, "Tekken 4" is undeniably a great fighting game. Although not bringing anything new to the table, it is still a formidable force to reckon with. It has everything from sharp, polished graphics and fast fighter combos with a pretty good storyline backing it up. The cinematic story scenes (although short) are intriguing to watch and add a lot of depth to the game. The play control is responsive and the moves are relatively easy to pull off (unlike Virtual Fighter in many ways). And while it's not going to revolutionize tournament fighting as we know it like tourney legends "Street Fighter II" and "Mortal Kombat" (the truth hurts, doesn't it?), "Tekken 4" is still a welcomed entry to a seemingly ailing genre. Fans of the series with surely embrace this latest installment as the "Tekken" franchise continues on, full speed ahead. That is until the "Deadly Alliance" comes to town at least.

not bad, but needs more diverse gameplay

This is a pretty good addition to the tekken saga. The graphics continue to get better and better and the moves become more cool to watch with each new game. the problem is that what this game breaks down to is a button mashing fest. Namco attempts to make you learn other character's fighting styles and moves by offering story lines to go with each character that are shown by playing as that character, but you wind up simply using the same 3 or 4 moves for the entire game because you can't remeber more than that while being wailed on by a CPU oponnent. There is also the classic survival, time attack, and team battle, but once again, no skill is necessary. There is also an incredibly pointless new game called tekken force where you fight wave after wave after wave of soldiers (you win by mashing buttons) and when you win you get...absolutely nothing. In summation, good game, needs more unlockable goodies and moves slightly less difficult and/or time consuming to execute

Great addition to tekken series.

I love tekken. My favorite fighting game of all time. I started in the beggining, and can say that Tekken Tag is the best one. This game is good, but it is hard to follow up an act like Tekken Tag. There aren't alot of characters. I love the ones there, but they could of added more. Replay value? Once you beat it with everyone there isn't much left to do, except tekken force.

Tekken force is NOT new. Tekken 3 had tekken force. This one however has better terrains. It isnt too hard, but it is rather fun compared to 1 on 1. I found that the length made it less enjoyable, I want to play the last level over and over, but instead I have to replay the first ones which take forever.

Time attack, survivor, team battle, they the usual. New characters rock. Marduk is like jack replacement, I enjoy fighting him. Christie is, I guess they thought instead of having Eddie, they could make him more popular with a girl. This does make the game better in arcade though. Alot of guys, instead of using Eddie 24/7, have now decided to use other characters. Steve is probably the best thing about the game. Hes a boxer, and because of this, he has no kicks. He however, can dodge, which is the coolest and most fun thing in the game. You can duck all kinds of ways, spin around, sway, and you can combine them to have your character spaz out. The great thing is, you can actually dodge most attacks. Parrying is also pretty fun. I still love counter attacks, and this game made my love of Tekken rise slightly. Most players are turned off by Steve because he has no kicks. It is really fun playing against humans. Some of those kids at the arcade freak out and tell you to stop moving and such. Steve is really great once you learn the techniques.

Almost forgot, sidestepping is much easier. Press up or down to sidestep. You can still jump and crouch, but with tekken 4, I have learned they are not needed really.
