Oh, Tekken. How you have not changed in 5 years.

I enjoyed the original Tekken. No, really. It's nothing compared to Virtua Fighter, or Soul Calibur in the arcades (or on Dreamcast, if you're lucky enough to have an Agetec stick like me), but there's always room for a new fighter, right? Wrong. Tekken 2 came and went, same moves, new characters, better graphics, c'est la vie. Same with 3. Now 4 is out on PS2, and all the fannies are running to stores gasping for air, while screaming with their meticulous voices, "Tekken! PS2 r00lz!" But, I can't judge, because their humor is far more entertaining than the overall therapy I'll require some day because of it. So, in short, if you enjoy playing the same game over and over again... knock yourself out. But, if you're above that, go check out Virtua Fighter 4, or maybe wait for Soul Calibur 2. Besides, PS2 isn't all it's cracked up to be.. all of you who've gone to a public school during the 5th grade will know what I mean when I say this about propaganda: don't jump on the bandwagon.

"A New Century of Fighting", indeed!!!

I have played Tekken 4 on PS2 long before the US version was out. That's because I've played Japanese versions before. Of course, I've played "US version" in arcades, too, and they're not too different at all.

If you want a comment on TK4, mine would be in two words: "BUY IT". Of course, not before trying it out though -- some ppl who are used to the old system seem to have a hard time getting used to TK4's new features, which is why there had been some awful comments on TK4 by many Tekkeners. But I've seen some who love 4 more than 3 or Tag, (including myself), so quite honestly, it's all up to you.

If you want my opinion, I think TK4 is a lot more dynamic than the old series in many ways -- the camera works, new moves, etc. And the field becoming an actual 3D field makes the whole game all the more realistic and exciting. (No more endless 2D field pretending to be a 3D field now, I tell you!!) And then of course, there's the "wall", which is a newly introduced concept.

I could babble on for hours about TK4's new system and contents, but any Tekken player would know that Tekken is a game worth experiencing before hearing about. Now stop hearing or reading about it, and go see it for yourself !! If you're a Tekken lover, this is a MUST-BUY...

...that is, if you're not one of those I-hate-that-wall-thing conservatives. (phrrrp)

Tekken 3 and a Half

The Tekken series has seriously spoiled me. The improvements between each Tekken game evolves and gives us something spectacular everytime without straying from the Tekken feel. Tekken Tag Tournament is hands down the best fighting game i've ever played (and that includes Street Fighter II). So, judging by Namco's track record and the substantial leap between Tekken 3 on PS1 to Tekken Tag on PS2, it's only natural to see how Namco would outdo themselves. Then i played Tekken 4. I guess you can keep getting better for only too long. The backgrounds are bland (especially the Airport Stage, and Tekken did just fine without special effects like water on the Jungle Stage) and the walls only give more of an edge to the most infamous players of the game...the button jammers. The fighters don't even have their old feel to them. Lei's juggle combos have been watered down as well as Heihachi's. Jin used to be a great character, but how bad he is now is just unexplainable. Little things, like animation of clothing, and walls breaking draws away from how visually stunning Namco could really make a game. Tekken Tag far suprasses Tekken 4 in gameplay and graphics and it has been released two years prior! On top of the bland backgrounds come even worse design for the characters. Heihachi in a thong!? Paul letting his hair down!? And the outfits are just terrible, looks as if no effort was put into them at all. All of that aside, Tekken 4 does have its signs of life and improvement. Law has been given a few new moves that make him much better than he was in previous games (like Bruce Lee's stomach kick that sends the other guy flying) and Steve Fox is an addition most worth mentioning. His lightning-fast as well as powerful punches along with elusiveness makes him my personal favorite Tekken character...EVER! As cool as Law and Steve Fox are however, they do not save the rest of the game. If Steve would have been a good addition to another Tekken, Tekken 4 would be pretty much useless. Namco, you had the right idea in the beginning, what you may consider ground-breaking effects takes away from the essence of Tekken and is more of a side-game than a sequel.

not the best, but still Tekken.

i am the largest Tekken fan i've ever met. i can beat everyone i know (though admittedly i've never been to a tourny), and it's my favorite video game series, period. unfortunately, to date, Tekken Tag Tournament is the best one. it has many more characters, more game modes, and, well, tag. so my suggestion is if you like fighting games of any sort, or really just videogames, get Tekken Tag Tournament. unless you're a die-hard fan like me, the few extra goodies and slightly polished graphics just aren't worth the money to shell out.

this is one of the best games compared to Mortal Combat

Well I have been a fighting game fan for years and have played every VF and Tekken there is out there. Therefore I will make the review quick and painless. I think this game by far has the best graphics so far in Tekken, but that was a no brainer. Basically this is a souped up version of Tag without some of the characters like Jun. Unofrtunately she was one of my favorites, but oh well that's how it goes isn't it? Well anyhow if you love Tekken then you should get it for sure, you will love it. It's a pretty big leap up for Tekken overall. But frankly there's really nothing shockingly new in here, it's the same old stuff reworked again.

Not better than VF4, but wasn't too close either

I've always been a big fan of the Tekken series, even TTT, which seemed to be universally ridiculed when it launced with the PS2 a few years ago. To say that T4 was "highly anticipated" is an understatement. It the granddaddy of PS2 fighters, and in the past the series has always offered something new and different. Not this time. If you've play T3 on PS1, then you'll be familiar with pretty much everything in offered here. Tekken's control system is firmly established now and while both satisfying and easy to use, it lacks the sense of complete control that Sega 's VF4 provides. While playing through the single player game, it soon feels more like a rhythmic button-masher session than a orchestrated fight. With each new game in the series, the back story has gotten more and more complicated (and I've played em all a billion times, so beileve me I know) so much so that in T4 the intricate web of tales hardly explains why all these fighters are beating each other up, and has no relavance whatsoever. If your a longtime fan (like me) though, some of it is mildly intresting, and in many cases the story provides a sense of closure for long-standing characters in the series. You'll get the most fun, like with any fighting game playing against a friend (and if you don't have those, there's always T4's Force mode, and I truly do feel sorry for you). The character selection offers a broad range of fighting styles and the walled arenas provide some intreting possibilities for completely one -sided matches. That said, it's a good fighting game but in the end it's just T3 with new 3D backgrounds, characters and environments and that's about it. VF4 blew the pants off this one. Maybe next time Namco.

Tekken 4

Tekken 4 is an okay game. I wouldn't reccomend it for anyone who likes to follow the characters' stories, because that's not what it's about. Tekken 4 only skims the surface of a good story game, which is O.K. considering this is a fighting game. Although character profiles are minimal, this game does offer a fair fighting system. The characters really are unique in thier fighting skills. The moves can get fairly flashy, although it is not in the league of Soul Calibur 2 or 3. The costumes are to be laughed at, and you only have 30 seconds to choose your character or it will be random. The combat can get very intense. The story mode offers you eight stages, and when you beat them you get an ending movie, like Soul Calibur 3. Tekken Force is a new mode and is a fun game. The sound tracks are not as good as Soul Calibur games. The characters are cool, still, because you can make up your own stories about them. And you can choose the character who does your favorite martial art. Paul does Judo, Hwoarang does Tae Kwon Do, and Lei Wulong does Kung Fu. Overall, however, I do not reccomend this game.

Very good game and fun to play, not as good as tekken tag tournement but its good because of the new characters and somewhat upgraded graphics.
