This game is something to shout about! Let me rephrase that - These 3 games are something to shout about! Thats basically what you get. The different characters are varied enough to make this a highly original FPS which has features important enough to make it a landmark FPS. It may not be HalfLife or SS2 but its damnright up there with the best of them This must be the best Movie spinoff of all time. The games mirror the movies so much. From the sounds the Aliens and Predators make to the way the Predator uses his medikit. Every aspect of the movie is there. The marine levels are the scariest I have ever seen. Aliens appear from nowhere and with surround sound I guarantee you will jump in fright in no time.
The cut scenes are gorgeous and once you complete a game there are bonus levels. You have to complete the game on the hardest level to get all of them.
This game also saw the first use of limited game saving per level. This is great as you cant save your game every 5 seconds. This has been seen in later games since. You WILL replay bits and it is tough but at least you have to use your brain and skill a bit more.
The marine levels were my favourite followed by the predator. Each character has different attack modes and ways of moving. For instance, the predator can survive high jumps while the alien is the quickest and hardest to hit but takes most damage. Learnin these skills is a key to sucess. There are also nice touches like the predator being able to pull the heads off marines and aliens blood spraying at you.
The predator has the different vision modes while the Alien has the fish vision mode. While a marine it sometimes felt like Half Life, but its the closest you'll get to being in the movie. The guns make the same noise, theres the constant beep of the detector which speeds up as an Alien gets closer. It cant be faulted for realism.
The multiplayer aspect is super also as you get to fight a mixture of baddies. Theres a big online contingent of players out there. Afrer Quake3, Unreal Tournement and Team Fortress this probably comes next in the hierarchy.
The only fault is that there could have been more levels and maybe the storyline could have been a bit better (being picky). Still, this does not detract from a PC classic with gripping atmosphere and moments that will give you nightmares!
It is a great FPS even without the Movie License which should appeal to fans of both the movie and gaming genre.
I cannot say enough good things about this game. Especially in a time when FPS are 10 a penny. This has new elements like the save options, 3 game modes and vision modes that makes this a cut above most other FPS out there. This game has added to the FPS genre for sure. You can almost hear the cries of "Game over man, game over!". Go get it now!

AvP was a game that caught attention to every alien and predaotr fan tha game was a hit, people loved to play avp online. Now there is avp gold so whats the difrence well it depends on the buyer.
If you really enjoyed AVP reg versions online play this is a game to buy with new multiplayer maps 2 new weapons for the marine double pistols and a skeeter gun(fires out discs) for the marine, and some graphic enhancment.you can also use the new weapons on single player mode aswell and the newer levels can be played in skirmish mode.
BUT,this game does not appeal very well to the single player lovers yep same old avp folks just 2 new weapons to use in single player plus the new skirmish levels.but this game is very bloody not for weak stomatch's lol anyway its your choice.....

Alien vs. Predator Gold is a fantastic game, difficult, at times terrifying and completely addictive. There is also a great multi-player option that takes place in office cubicles. The scale is a bit off but the ability to blow up the computers on the desk along with the enemy is wonderful. Another great thing about the Gold addition is that it comes with the full manual.
Time to begin the hunt

As a former "Doom" games player, I have witnessed a great revolution in the graphic representations since then and that was just a few years ago. This game is very difficult needless to say, but you if like a challenge in your gaming pursuits this one is it. A lot more complex than some other "shooter" games, this game offers many levels of graphic details whether its the interior of facility or the outside of a spacestation, you are definitely not dissappointed with the attention to authenticity true to the movies from which this and previous versions were derived. HAPPY HUNTING....

A quick insight into this dark thriller: One thing is for certain, they've captured the essence of both the Predator and the Alien species into one game while throwing in the useless Marine(watch him be quickly obliterated by the Predator's cloak and fire attacks and slashed and gutted by the wall jumping aliens). With this said, you'll probably want to avoid combat as a Marine; your lifespan is insufficient to that of a Predator or alien. The Predator's visual aides are quite useful to ensure that there are no approaching enemies, while the alien's visual aides are not nearly as unique and useful. Another downfall of an alien's abilities is that even though you're allowed to use slash attacks, they seem rationed with time(you've been climbing up walls for minutes slashing through grates and ventilation ducts, finally, when you spot a marine or another alien species, you are unable to move your claws fast enough to ensure your defeat). So, in other words, if you're trying to get through a game as quick as possible, the Predator can ensure your win. A marine and an alien, well, you'll need to work alittle harder. Since this is the gold edition, it also includes an official Prima strategy guide(for all of those who need an immediate defeat and are struggling), game engine enhancements and optimizations, a special in-game save(not available in the first edition), nine new levels never released before and new Marine weapons including "the Skeeter" and automatic pistols. Oh, apart from all these brand new features, there is a returning component, one that brings the game truly to life: an 8-player multiplayer mode. Slash, cloak and fire your way through 7 amazing multiplayer levels with over 4 different types of matches: Predator and Alien tag(how cute),Last Man Standing, Co-op, Deathmatch and Species Team Deathmatch. Capitalized by its stunningly original environments and its incredible attention to detail, Alien vs. Predator is a sure hit for anyone who finds that just watching the movies isn't enough.
Several years on and still good fun

I first started playing the original AVP when it was first released around about the same time as half life.
At the time it was bloody hard but fun and its a shame there are not more games released these days that offer the same kind of challange. one of the best parts of game design unlike in mololith's AVP 2 is that the aliens do not appear at the same place each time you play that level, instead they are continuously respawining from random points on the map which gives the whole "they're comming outta the goddam walls" feeling, especially when playing as marine.
although it was difficult opening the bonus levels just took time and skill.
I bought AVP Gold after loosing my original AVP Discs. there are not many major changes except the usual stuff you expect to find in an expansion (maps, weapons etc...) but the most significant is the added feature of being able to same the game mid point which, while i think this just allows people to use the quicksave button as a substitues for skill, the community as a whole applauded the feature.
The new weapons are fun my fave being the twin pistols which are supprisingly powerful.
One major gripe for my over the original AVP is that the staff at rebellion decided to replace the voices of the officers on the TV screens with themselves. unfortunatly they just sound stupid and break the atmosphere that the game gave.
Better to pick up the original if you can find it but if not AVP gold is a good second best
Note: there are issues running this on windows XP but the problem links back to an old .dll file in the game folder. this can be solved by downloading an updated .dll from one of the many fan sites out there
A game with a Challenge

One of the most challenging games that I have ever played. Predator, in my opinion, is by far the easiest character to play as. When playing as a Predator you get auto-aiming weapons, you can never run out of ammo if you are careful because most of the Predator weapon recharge on their own. The alien is slightly more difficult to play as because there are no long range kills. When playing as alien it takes practice. The alien can run up walls and across ceilings, and learning to jump from a ceiling or wall on to an unsuspecting victim can be very hard. The alien also has almost no way to gain lost energy; however, head bites and tearing victims to pieces can restore some lost health. (Which is a fair bonus because most of the time the victim never sees death coming). The Marine, the best character on the game (also in my opinion) and probably the most difficult to master. As a marine there is a whole arsenal of weapons at your disposal, but you have a lot less health than a Predator or Alien. There are med kits spread through out most levels but if you happen to run into an ambush you usually die very quickly; the most challenging but for me the one that is the most fun to play.
The multiplayer action is so cool. Death matches, interspecies matches, co-op matches, and all of them fun to play.
If you like a game with a challenge this is it. You can play as your favorite bad guy or a rough and tuff Marine. So if you can, buy the game and kill something before it can kill you.
Also check out Alien Vs Predator 2. For new challenges and new weapons.

Late one night, I was playing AVP. I was a Marine walking down a darkened corridor, strange sounds all around me; I could hear what sounded like a heart thumping. A strobe light flickered in the distance. Suddenly, I wheeled around to look behind me- nothing there, but then an Alien popped up right in front of me! I actually screamed out loud it was so shocking! If you liked the Alien movies, get this atmospheric game!~
This game rocks and runs smooth even on a low range system!

Let me start off by saying that this game has a great engine. In fact it runs at a smooth 95 fps on my old AMD-K62 475Mhz with 96 megs of RAM and a 16 meg video card (ATI All-In-Wonder). It's not too fond of WinXP's new 32-bit kernel though.
The game itself is nice too. It oozes with atmosphere. You really feel like you are in the game. Use this for an example. You are playing as the Marine and you are standing at the edge of a pitch-black tunnel and your motion sensor (it shows enemies within an 180 degree arc in front of you and it pings every second and a half or so) shows six enemies waitng for you. You light a flare to help you see as you make your way into the reeking darkness. Suddenly, you hear the scream of an alien behind you. You turn just in time to see the alien jump out of the shadows and you squeeze the trigger on your assault rifle (well, left-click with your mouse), reducing it to a corpse filled with high-caliber rifle rounds. Now this is atmosphere.
The three species are totally different, yet equal. The marine uses motion scanners, assault rifles, flamethrowers, and rocket launchers to take out the alien beasties. The Alien has only a claw attack and a tail whip, but he makes up for it with sheer speed , the ability to climb up walls, and he can jump four stories into the air and cling to a ceiling. The Predator is my favorite. He can cloak, has three (well, four if you count the normal one) vision modes, and you can decapitate the other species with the wristblade or the speargun! His weapons are the coolest; they include the plasmacaster, disc, pistol (really an anti-alien grenade launcher) and the afore-mentioned wristblade and speargun. There is nothing like sneaking up behind an marine and pinning his head to the nearest wall with the speargun.
Other people on this site complain about the game being to hard. From the way they were whining, it sounds like the are console gamers (dorks who play Playstation, Nintendo, and Sega [junk]) who [do badly] at PC games. The missions were harder in the original AvP (you couldn't save mid-mission), and the face-hugger could kill you instantly. But these thing have been fixed (well not the face-huggers). Some versions of the Gold edition do not let you save mid mission, but you can download a patch that fixes it...
Multiplayer is a whole different ballgame. There are a variety of modes, but my favorite is Species Deathmatch. All the Predators vs. all the Marines vs. all the Aliens. Plus, as the alien, if you destroy all the lights in a room, you can "hang out" on the celing until someone comes into the room, then jump down and bite their head off their neck (Yes, you can do that in the game). Mplayer no longer exists so the only options are Gamespy ... and a direct connection (must know the host's IP address. To find yours under Win98, open the run box and type "winipcfg").
This is only the second game ever to make me literally jump out of my seat while playing (the first was Half-Life, Best Shooter Ever, voted Game of the Year by fifty organizations in 1998. ... I would not advise cranking the sound and playing in a dark room if you have a weak heart, bladder, or if you are under 13 or over 62. I have much experience with the first game, and this Gold Edition only makes things better. It comes with my highest recommendations.
