This game rocks and runs smooth even on a low range system!

Let me start off by saying that this game has a great engine. In fact it runs at a smooth 95 fps on my old AMD-K62 475Mhz with 96 megs of RAM and a 16 meg video card (ATI All-In-Wonder). It's not too fond of WinXP's new 32-bit kernel though.
The game itself is nice too. It oozes with atmosphere. You really feel like you are in the game. Use this for an example. You are playing as the Marine and you are standing at the edge of a pitch-black tunnel and your motion sensor (it shows enemies within an 180 degree arc in front of you and it pings every second and a half or so) shows six enemies waitng for you. You light a flare to help you see as you make your way into the reeking darkness. Suddenly, you hear the scream of an alien behind you. You turn just in time to see the alien jump out of the shadows and you squeeze the trigger on your assault rifle (well, left-click with your mouse), reducing it to a corpse filled with high-caliber rifle rounds. Now this is atmosphere.
The three species are totally different, yet equal. The marine uses motion scanners, assault rifles, flamethrowers, and rocket launchers to take out the alien beasties. The Alien has only a claw attack and a tail whip, but he makes up for it with sheer speed , the ability to climb up walls, and he can jump four stories into the air and cling to a ceiling. The Predator is my favorite. He can cloak, has three (well, four if you count the normal one) vision modes, and you can decapitate the other species with the wristblade or the speargun! His weapons are the coolest; they include the plasmacaster, disc, pistol (really an anti-alien grenade launcher) and the afore-mentioned wristblade and speargun. There is nothing like sneaking up behind an marine and pinning his head to the nearest wall with the speargun.
Other people on this site complain about the game being to hard. From the way they were whining, it sounds like the are console gamers (dorks who play Playstation, Nintendo, and Sega [junk]) who [do badly] at PC games. The missions were harder in the original AvP (you couldn't save mid-mission), and the face-hugger could kill you instantly. But these thing have been fixed (well not the face-huggers). Some versions of the Gold edition do not let you save mid mission, but you can download a patch that fixes it...
Multiplayer is a whole different ballgame. There are a variety of modes, but my favorite is Species Deathmatch. All the Predators vs. all the Marines vs. all the Aliens. Plus, as the alien, if you destroy all the lights in a room, you can "hang out" on the celing until someone comes into the room, then jump down and bite their head off their neck (Yes, you can do that in the game). Mplayer no longer exists so the only options are Gamespy ... and a direct connection (must know the host's IP address. To find yours under Win98, open the run box and type "winipcfg").
This is only the second game ever to make me literally jump out of my seat while playing (the first was Half-Life, Best Shooter Ever, voted Game of the Year by fifty organizations in 1998. ... I would not advise cranking the sound and playing in a dark room if you have a weak heart, bladder, or if you are under 13 or over 62. I have much experience with the first game, and this Gold Edition only makes things better. It comes with my highest recommendations.

Aliens Vs Predator

Alien Vs Predator is a first person shooter. AVP has a very poor AI and does not have much of a storyline, It is just a get from point A to point B by killing everything that comes in your way. You could play as three different charecters Alien, Predator and a Colonial Marine.

ALIEN : The Alien levels compared to the others are very easy. It does not have any weapons besides it's claws and tail, So to kill someone it needs to get very near the enemy, But a couple of attacks could kill the enemy. It moves really fast and can walk on walls or any surfaces. It can see clearly even in darkness. The alien gameplay is orginal and a initially a lot of fun but gets boring fast because the same thing happens in every level, No new weapons or new enemies.

MARINE : The marine levels are very difficult and quite unplayable. He has a lot of weapons but is given only a few for the levels and sometimes after the level completion the weapons collected are taken away and is given only a few. Each level have a lot of monstors but you can't see them comming because the levels are very dark and you need to use the image intesifier to look ahead, It makes the dark areas green and the bright areas white, If you fire a weapon with the image intense on the screen becomes white and you cant see where the enemey is. One minuite you could be walking with full health and aurmor but before you know it zero health, zero aurmor and game over. The marine levels are very difficult even on the easy difficulty.

PREDATOR : Compared to the marine the predator levels are very easy but not as easy as the alien. The predator moves very slowly and can become almost invisible, It has many weapons and can take a lot of damage. The predator has four types of visions to see in total darkness and it can also heal itself.

Each of the three charecters have six levels each, If you complete a charecter you could unlock a few bonus missions, And the number of bonus missions that is unlocked depends on the difficulty you play. AVP Gold has a limited number of saves depending on the difficulty. I would recommend you to play on the hardest difficulty (Director's Cut), Though it would be very difficult it would unlock many bonus mission, I don't think there is any difference between the difficulties besides the number of saves you are limited. AVP's graphics are sound are ok, The special effects are very good. Compared to the other games it ran very smooth and it did not crash much either. Alien Vs Predator is a good game but only for very good gamers, It is the most hardest and the most frustrating game i have ever played.

Great Game... With One Major Problem

I loved the game. I had downloaded one of the Single player demo's and decided I had to have it, even if it was old. The graphics are intense, and it seems like you are almost IN an Alien movie. The sounds are great, and the In game movie's help with the atmosphere. I particularly liked the Melee game, even though it was almost impossible to survive for longer than a minute or so.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to play the Single player mission games very much yet.

The problem I have with the game is it doesn't run right under Windows ME. It doesn't say that anywhere when you buy it, and the tech support is practically useless. With ME, the game freezes your computer RELIABLY/ So if you are running ME, wait til you upgrade to XP or you will have to run another OS on your computer. Or get the sequel, AVP II which runs on ME.

Could've been such a great game!

...this game is too hard. It's not hard a in good way like having to use a lot of strategy and wits to win the game. It's hard in a you-almost-die-when-encountering-one-enemy kind of hard. You get to play the 3 different species: predator, alien, and marine (in the order of easiest to hardest). In the predator games I can actually finish most of the levels, but in the other 2 (especially the marine games) you basically die if you let the enemies come within 3 feet of you. And this is when the game is set to easy!!

But to be fair, I haven't played the aliens or predator missions too much. The only one I really like playing are the marine missions, because ever since the alien movies came out I always wanted to know what it was like to actually be in the movie. This leads me to the best feature of the game. It really makes you feel like you are really in the movie. The marine missions will scare the crap out of you and then some. The other 2 missions aren't too scary or great in my opinion. Marine missions are very dark with aliens seeming to come out of no where. To compensate for this, the game has night vision sensors, endless amount of flares, and the motion detector from the movie. Although, the motion detector seems to be better at causing your heart to race then in actually helping you.

This game would be perfect if it wasn't so hard. I haven't even passed the 3rd level with the setting on easy. .... Because it is so hard, the developers should've made the single player missions playable in a multiplayer environment. Trust me you'll need the extra firepower and someone to cover your rear flank. If you want to know how quickly you would die going against these aliens in real life then buy the game. ....

What can i say about this game,it has really cool graphics,a good gameplay and a good atmosphere to it.the game has all the qualities of a good game except that it is a little too hard particularly with the alien, its still ok with the colonel and predator.to be honest i wouldnt suggest one buying this game if hes lookin for a good mission game but its for the ones who like hunting, killing all the way.the game in all is not for everyone to buy but only for the ones who like to hold the gun and be told kill everything that comes on the screen

Don't miss it!

I've been a First Person Shooter fan since Wolfenstein, but for some reason didn't pick this one up until now. I'd heard it was insanely difficult and had no save game feature, which was true. However, the Gold version has a save anywhere feature that comes in really handy! The graphics are somewhat dated by today's standards, but the engine they used (Lithtech I think, but I could be wrong; I'm guessing by the look) was very imaginatively utilized, resulting in some really beautiful levels. I mean you feel like you're in the movie. Level one is mostly indoors, but level two gets you outside into a really beautiful bluish-tinted and rainy area. Very moody! I've only had experience playing as the marine, and I'm only on the second level, so you'll have to take that into account when you read this. You start out in a room, and the first thing you notice is someone is talking to you. Turns out it's a commanding officer talking through a video-phone on the wall. This feature is superbly used, as your friend keeps you up to date on your situation as you progress, and you can see him and hear him talking to you at various points. It doesn't sound like much, I know, but after some extended 'alone' time, running into one of these monitors and seeing and hearing your commanding officer again is a huge relief to your lonliness. It's a phychological thing mostly, but it really works. And I'm not sure how they did it, but they flawlessly incorporated these full-motion video scenes into the engine (into small screens on the walls and at computer stations) so it looks perfectly natural. After exploring a bit, I discovered another huge aid: The Image Intensifier. You'll use this a lot in darker areas, and once again, the makers did a fantastic job of making this effect look just like you'd think an image intensifier should look. Also, there's a motion tracker, just like in the movie, which lets you know where the aliens are. Just hearing that beep is enough to raise gooseflesh, without even seeing anything! The first alien I ran into was totally unexpected, and I about fell out of my chair when it came at me. The developers did a fine job of creating the beasts! The surroundings are surreal, and will cause your imagination to run wild. Sound effects are first-rate too, especially the ambient sounds, and they are positional, meaning if they're to the left, you'll hear them from your left speaker. This is possibly the scariest game I have ever played. That honor used to go to the "Thief" games, but those games used more tension-filled fear than true, gut-level nightmare-type fear.

The box gives a Pentium 200 as minimum and recommends a PII 400, but I installed it on my PII 266 (with 96 MB ram and a Voodoo 2 video card) and it ran absolutely smoothly at full detail. I also installed it on a PII 450 with 256 MB ram and a first generation NVidia TNT 1 video card, and it performs flawlessly there too. It is one of the smoothest-performing games I own. Sure, it's a couple years old, but it looks great, and is sure to become one of those classics you'll be looking for later if you don't get it now. Also, I highly recommend playing this with all the lights off, and at night. And not because of the mood (though playing in the dark will certainly enhance the mood). I recommend playing in darkness more because if there's any kind of light glaring on your screen, you won't be able to see well. This is a very dark game, and I've found that at night with all lights off, you can see all you need to. But don't forget to use the Image Intensifier--you'll need it in places. If you can stand the fear, this game is a must-have!

This game is AWESOME!

This game is awesome (as my title said). A lot of people have been saying its to hard when really its not that hard especially when you get used to it like me. If you are really having a tough time then you should get the strategy guide for this game, it really helps. If you like first person shooters then you should get this game, and if you like this game you might want to try Aliens vs. Predator 2.
People have also been saying that it doesn't run that well on new computers with windows XP and thats partly true. I've been playing on a brand new Dell with XP and I got it to work. All you got to do is not watch all the videos and credits by hitting spacebar. But you got to do it at a time when there's no sound or almost no sound like at the beginning of the game right after it says rebellion and then goes quiet. Also do this when they show the videos at the beginning of each species, but remember only hit the spacebar when there is no sound or almost no sound. I was able to play all species this way.
Overall this is a great game and i recomend it to anyone. I hope you found this review useful.

Terror Game: Looking Through Both Sides

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 2

Aliens vs. Predator, a game based from two different Sci-Fi movies, is a great strategical/first-person shooter game that combines a great mixture of action, terror, suspense, and gore. The game isn't simply between aliens and predators, but also with the added human character to add a different side to the story and adding, hopefully, more depths and variety to the game. Designed for intermediate to professional pc gamers, the game isn't for those who are slow and clumsy, bad of memory or heart, or those not into games like these.

However, looking over the other side, the game A.I. needs much improvements, human counterpart should be even out slightly more, and more levels should be added. However, for the cost and the date it was made, its better than many games made to this present day.

Just think about fighting an alien that, instead of running straight at you, will instead, hit and run and use cover of the darkness and walls more. Aliens in the movie, tend to use team work as well. Thats some improvements, but I might be being a bit too picky.

Look at the price

It's not a must have game, but look at the price.

If you even remotely like first-person shooters you should buy this game. It's great to see such diversity in the species. Each has very distinct advantages and disadvantages that make the game more enjoyable.

Another great deal is multiplayer online. All first-person shooters are great online and add to the replay value of a game.

It's a good game, but not perfect and the price makes it a must have.
